To summarize the clinical application patterns in acupuncture-moxibustion treatment of AD by reviewing the clinical literatures on acupuncture-moxibustion for Alzheimer disease (AD) published between January 2009 and December 2019. China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wanfang Academic Journal Full-text Database (Wanfang), Chongqing VIP Database (CQVIP), Chinese Medicine Acupuncture-moxibustion Information Database, PubMed Medical Data Retrieval Service System, Springer Database and Ovid Technologies (OVID) were retrieved to screen clinical studies of acupuncture-moxibustion treatment of AD according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria to conduct quantitative, clustering and association analyses. In acupuncture-moxibustion treatment of AD, the frequently used points were Baihui (GV 20), Zusanli (ST 36), Sishencong (EX-HN 1), Taixi (KI 3), Sanyinjiao (SP 6), and Neiguan (PC 6) in the descending order. Regarding meridians, the most frequently used one was the Governor Vessel, followed by the Stomach Meridian of Foot Yangming and Gallbladder Meridian of Foot Shaoyang. From the perspective of body regions, the points in the head-face region and the lower-limb region had the highest frequencies, followed by the upper-limb, back and chest-abdomen regions. The point group, Baihui (GV 20) and Sishencong (EX-HN 1)-Neiguan (PC 6)-Sanyinjiao (SP 6), showed the most significant association, and the group winning the second place was Baihui (GV 20) and Sishencong (EX-HN 1)-Neiguan (PC 6)-Zusanli (ST 36). The clustering analysis showed that the commonly used point pairs included Zusanli (ST 36)-Sishencong (EX-HN 1) and Taixi (KI 3)-Sanyinjiao (SP 6), which were closely associated with Baihui (GV 20). By analyzing the three commonly used acupuncture-moxibustion methods, acupuncture plus medication was found achieving the best result in the total effective rate and mini-mental state examination (MMSE) score, followed by monotherapy of electroacupuncture therapy, and these two methods were superior to acupuncture alone (P

To explore the clinical regularities in acupuncture-moxibustion treatment of cancer pain by reviewing the relevant studies published between 1985 and 2017. Based on the Chinese Medicine Acupuncture-moxibustion Information Database, quantitative analysis, correlation analysis and Chi-square test were applied to analyze the commonly used acupoints, meridian affiliations and body region distributions, commonly used methods and acupoint correlations, treatment method correlations, the efficacy of acupuncture- moxibustion plus the three-step analgesic ladder for cancer pain, and indicators. Zusanli (ST 36), Ashi point and Sanyinjiao (SP 6) ranked the top on the list of frequency; points from Bladder Meridian of Foot Taiyang and Stomach Meridian of Foot Yangming were often used; points from the lower limbs and back had high frequencies. The most commonly used treatment method was acupuncture-moxibustion plus medication. Acupuncture-moxibustion plus the three-step analgesic ladder showed certain advantage compared with the two methods used separately, and among the integrated methods, acupoint application plus the three-step analgesic ladder produced the most significant efficacy. It took (44.77±55.54) min for the analgesic effect to act and the effect lasted for (12.81±14.59) h. Numerical rating scale (NRS), visual analog scale (VAS) and Karnofsky performance status (KPS) scores all showed significant changes after interventions (all P 0.05). Zusanli (ST 36), Ashi point and Sanyinjiao (SP 6) are commonly selected in acupuncture-moxibustion treatment of cancer pain; acupuncture and acupoint application are often used; acupuncture-moxibustion plus the three-step analgesic ladder can boost the treatment efficacy.

To analyze and review the clinical efficacy of acupuncture (including electroacupuncture) alone for allergic rhinitis (AR) and to compare its efficacy with antihistamines and Chinese patent medicine Bi Yan Kang Tablet. The search strategy, inclusion and exclusion criteria were made according to the principle of evidence-based medicine. We performed a systematic search on China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wanfang Academic Journal Full-text Database (Wanfang), Chongqing VIP Database (CQVIP), Chinese Biomedical Literature Database (CBM), PubMed, Excerpta Medica Database (EMBASE), Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of acupuncture for allergic rhinitis between January 1990 and December 2015. The quality was evaluated by Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions Version 5.1, and the meta-analysis was conducted by RevMan 5.3 version. Twenty eligible RCTs were included into the meta-analysis after selection. Compared with antihistamines, the meta-analysis showed RR=1.24>1, 95%CI[1.15, 1.33], P 0, 95%CI[–10.84, 13.75], P = 0.82, indicating that there was no statistical difference between acupuncture and antihistamines in regulating immunoglobulin E (IgE) in AR patients. Ovulatory dysfunction refers to absent ovulation or luteal insufficiency. It is commonly seen in women with irregular menstruation or menstrual cycles, especially in those with oligomenorrhea or amenorrhea. Ovulatory dysfunction is considered the single-most frequent cause of female infertility. Clinically, the two major causes of ovulatory dysfunction are polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) and luteinized unruptured follicle syndrome (LUFS). Acupuncture-moxibustion improves ovulation and helps with infertility. Through a systematic review and analysis on relevant literatures in Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture-moxibustion Databank over the last decade, this paper summarized the characteristics and pattern of acupuncture-moxibustion points for improving ovulation in order to provide an optimal acupuncture-moxibustion protocol in this regard.

Objective By the bibliometrical analysis and evaluation of acupuncture theses on auricular acupoint sticking from 2005 to 2014, the analysis was processed from multiple aspects including the types and numbers of diseases and effective rates of various diseases, in order to objectively reflect the general situation of clinical application of ear point embedding method in the recent years.

In review of acupuncture literature from 1949 to 2010, in accordance with the data in ‘Traditional Chinese Medical Acupuncture-moxibustion Information Databank’, the accounting analysis was used for comprehensive analysis and regularity summery of acupuncture therapy for apoplexy sequelae. The results showed that Hegu (LI 4), Zusanli (ST 36), Quchi (LI 11), Jianyu (LI 15), Sanyinjiao (SP 6), Yanglingquan (GB 34), Lianquan (CV 23), and Waiguan (TE 5) were used at the highest frequency. In the therapeutic methods, acupuncture was used at the highest frequency, followed by scalp acupuncture, and simultaneous application of acupuncture and herbal medicine.

The frequencies of use of 361 human acupoints in 74 academic journals of traditional Chinese medicine published between 1949 and 2010 are arranged in order using ‘Traditional Chinese Medical Acupuncture-moxibustion Information Databank’. The frequencies of use are divided into five grades: most frequent use, more frequent use, frequent use, less frequent use and infrequent use. The most frequently used acupoints and infrequently used acupoints are summarized and analyzed to help point selection for clinical acupuncture and selection of acupuncture research projects in the future.

To make a bibliometric analysis and evaluation of acupuncture-moxibustion papers on moxibustion therapy published from 1954 to 2007, thus to reflect the diseases spectrum of moxibustion therapy and proper indications of moxibustion therapy objectively. Statistics were taken by a bibliometric analysis of the data from China Modern Acupuncture-moxibustion Information Databank. The diseases spectrum of moxibustion therapy has 364 kinds of diseases. The most proper indications of moxibustion therapy are malposition, diarrhea, and colitis. The common proper indications are urinary incontinence and dysmenorrhea. The next common proper indications are knee osteoarthritis, temporomandibular joint disturbance syndrome, soft tissue injury, heel pain, asthma, urinary retention and herpes zoster. Diseases spectrum of moxibustion therapy varies with time.

To review year 1956–2007 literature on acupuncture-moxibustion, explore point selection and methods for acupuncture-moxibustion treatment of depression. A comprehensive analysis was made by a method of metrological analysis according to the data from “China modern acupuncture-moxibustion information databank”. The results show that Baihui (GV 20) and Neiguan (PC 6) were the points most frequently used. As an acupuncture-moxibustion treatment for depression, acupuncture ranked first. It is proposed to use Baihui (GV 20) and Neiguan (PC 6) as a basic prescription for acupuncture-moxibustion treatment of depression, other points can be selected according to the syndrome.

LU Shou-yan (1909-1969), a famous acupuncturist in China and overseas, from Kunshan, Jiangsu province, started to learn medicine from his father LI Pei-qing (a distinguished acupuncturist) at the age of 16, and started to practice medicine in Shanghai when he was 18, followed by amazing effects in treating patients. Later on, he created the "New-China Acupuncture Research Association" and acupuncture correspondence course. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, he hosted positions including director of acupuncture department, Shanghai College of Traditional Chinese Medicine, director of acupuncture department, Longhua Hospital, director of Shanghai Research Institute of Acupuncture and Meridian, and director of Shanghai Municipal Acupuncture Association. His works included Illustrated Meridians, Overview of Acupuncture Points, Collections of Needling Techniques, and Illustrations of Acupuncture Points, along with 22 papers. In addition, he developed an adult-sized motor-operated glass model containing meridians and points in collaboration with Shanghai Instructional Model Factory, coupled with recording explanations to provide a direct view of running course of meridians and meridian-qi flow. 1 Theory of Mountain-fire Burning and Heaven-penetrating Cooling LU considers that correct manipulations are essential to the therapeutic effect. To observe the therapeutic efficacy of acupuncture plus three-step analgesic ladder for cancer pain relief. Thirty-six cases with cancer pain were randomized into a treatment group and a control group. Twenty-four cases in the treatment group were treated with acupuncture plus three-step analgesic ladder approach and 12 cases in the control group were treated with three-step analgesic ladder approach alone. This paper reviews and analyzes 50 articles concerning the treatment of climacteric syndrome by acupuncture and moxibustion therapries. The therapies were single acupuncture, acupuncture combining other methods, auricular-plaster therapy, and some other therapies. Clear diagnostic criteria were found in 39 articles, and the most common-used criteria wereCombination of TCM and Western Medicine Diagnostics and Therapeutics, Kupperman Index Scoring andCriterion of Diagnosis and Treatment Effect of TCM Diseases and Syndrome. All together 2946 cases were treated, and the therapeutic effect rates ranged from 58.1% to 100%. There were control group in 16 articles. The syndromes have been classified as 27 types in 15 articles, including type of yin-deficiency of the liver and the kidney, yang-deficiency of the spleen and the kidney, yang-deficiency of the kidney, yin-deficiency of the kidney, disharmony between the heart and the kidney, and the liver stagnation, etc. Some effects have been got in treating female climacteric syndrome with acupuncture and moxibustion therapy, however, there were fewer strict randomized controlled trials (RCT).

To promote acupuncture practice, the general situation of acupuncture in treating leucopenia between 1949–2004 were analyzed on the basis of Chinese Modern Acupuncture Database. From 1981, references of acupuncture treating leucopenia increased annually and steadily. In clinic, hydroacupuncture, needling, and moxibustion are widely used, and the selected acupoints are those of Bladder Meridian of Foot Taiyang and Governor Vessel. Acupuncture-moxibustion have a good therapeutic effects on leucopenia.

To review the general situation of acupuncture in treating vascular headache between 1949–2004 in an attempt to promote acupuncture practice, clinical references concerning acupuncture treatment of vascular headache were analyzed on the basis ofChinese Modern Acupuncture Database. From 1956, these references increased annually and steadily. In clinical practice, needling is cardinally used, and the acupoints are selected adjacent to diseased part and on syndrome differentiation.

This paper makes a statistics on the literature concerning the treatment of asthma by acupuncture respectively from theRetrieval System of Acupoint Indications in Ancient Acupuncture Treatise and theInformation Database of Modern Chinese Acupuncture, and compares the treatment methods between ancient and modern times, in an attempt to advance the common treatment principles and methods for asthma by acupuncture.

Analyzed 74 articles relevant to urinary calculus and renal colic. The statistics found that the commonly used therapies were needling, acupuncture and moxibustion, electro-acupuncture, acupoint-injection, ear-point application, ear acupuncture, wrist-ankle acupuncture, scalp acupuncture, acupressure and combined acupuncture methods. To analyze 73 theses that all accorded with statistical demand about ulcerative colonitis. The statistics found that the commonly used therapies were acupuncture, moxibustion, acupuncture-moxibustion, herb-partitioned moxibustion, acupoint-injection, point-radiation therapy, auricular-plaster therapy, catgut implantation at acupoint, point application etc. The commonly used points were Zusanii (ST36), Tianshu (ST25), Pishu (BL20), Weishu (BL21), Zhongwan (CV12), Dachangshu (BL25) etc. The total effective rate in clinic was 95.40%.

This paper collects and analyzes 40 398 pieces of information from Chinese Modern Acupuncture Information Database (1970–2002). It covers 93 articles concerning the treatment of chronic gastritis by acupuncture and 5 325 subjects, the total effective rate being 94.4%. The frequent treatment methods are needling, moxibustion, burial therapy, and hydropuncture. The major acupoints are Zusanli (ST 36), Zhongwan (CV 12), Weishu (BL 21), Pishu (BL20), Neiguan (PC 6), Ganshu (BL 18), Sanyinjiao (SP 6), etc. In the presence of severe stomachache, Liangqiu (ST 34) and Gongsun (SP 4) are added; in the presence of abdominal fullness, Tianshu (ST 25) and Qihai (CV 6) are added; in the presence of diarrhea, Tianshu (ST 25) and Shangjuxu (ST 37) are added; in the presence of vomiting, Shangwan (CV 13) and Taichong (LR 3) are added.

This paper statistically analyzes sixty-two articles concerning the treatment of obesity with acupuncture, and finds that the common therapy embraces needling, moxibustion, electroacupuncture, ear acupuncture, auricular application, auricular needle-embedding, acupoint application, acupoint embedding and combined methods of acupuncture. The frequent auricular acupoints are Stomach (MA-IC), Endocrine (MA-IC 3), Er Shenmen (MA-TF I), Lung (MA-IC 1), Spleen (MA-IC), Hunger Point (MA-T) and Sanjiao (MA-IC 4). The clinical total effective rate was 75.8%.

Related to treatment of senile dementia, 53 articles conformed the statistical demand were analyzed, finding commonly used methods are acupuncture, moxibustion, acupoint-injection, electro-acupuncture, ocular-acupuncture, scalp-acupuncture, digital-acupuncture and acupuncture plus other therapies, key treatment principle is opening orifice and invigorating brain, frequent selected acupoints are Baihui (GV 20), Zusanli (ST 36), Fengchi (GB 20), Fenglong (ST 40), Neiguan (PC 6), Shuigou (GV 26), etc; and the total effective rate is 89.62%.
