AIDS dementia complex (ADC) may occur at different times during the course of the disease among different patients. Early signs of ADC include memory loss and difficulty concentrating. Symptoms of later stages of ADC include confusion, distractibility and delayed verbal responses. Patients with ADC may withdraw socially and show reduced emotional spontaneity. Clumsiness and balance difficulties may also occur, but these are less common. There has been a significant decline in the incidence of ADC since the introduction of zidovudine treatment in 1989. Zidovudine appears to be effective in stopping the progress of ADC.
