Within the scope of sustainability, this work tackles both food waste and food safety by studying the ethylene scavenging potencial of α-cyclodextrin nanosponges produced by solvent-free synthesis and the food safety evaluation of the compostable packaging for food contact applications where the nanosponges will be incorporated.

Ion mobility time-of-flight mass spectrometry has been used for the identification the PA 6 and PA 66 oligomers through their accurate m/z, CCS values and fragmentation pattern. An extraction method for the oligomers from sunflower oil, cooked beans, soup and whole milk has been developed with recoveries ranging from 87 to 102 %.

En este trabajo presentamos un método sencillo y rápido para confirmar la contaminación por aceites minerales (MOH) de distintos tipos de muestras mediante extracción por SPE y determinación por Cromatografía de Gases con Detector de masas.

Starch-base biopolymers are commonly used as food contact materials. In this work, the volatile compounds of a starch-base material and its migration to ethanol 95% food simulant were determined by GC-MS. A total of 35 compounds were detected in the material, 5 of them were also detected in migration.

Identification of volatile compounds from different virgin polyolefin FCMs was carried out by GC-MS with both HS-SPME and ultrasonic extraction (UE), with the aim to obtein the most amount of volatile compounds from polyolefin. Seventy compounds were identified with 90% reliability by GC-MS with NIST 14 library, most of them are NIAS.

Esta investigación explora la utilización de determinados marcadores para detectar, identificar y cuantificar los hidrocarburos aromáticos procedentes de aceites minerales en diferentes materiales, empleando Cromatografía de Gases a Presión Atmósferica acoplada a un Cuadrupolo con un Espectometro de Masas de Tiempo de Vuelo (APGC-MS/Q-TOF).

El PLA (ácido poliláctico) es uno de los biopolímeros más utilizado para contacto alimentario. En este trabajo se ha llevado a cabo la determinación de los principales oligómeros presentes en el PLA y en la migración con tres simulantes alimentarios diferentes. Los análisis se llevaron a cabo mediante UPLC-MS-QTOF.

En este trabajo, fueron evaluadas dos técnicas de pre-concentración: micro-extracción en fase líquida con fibra hueca (HF-LPME[A1] ) y micro-extracción en fase sólida (SPME) para el análisis de isoftalaldehido por cromatografía gaseosa acoplada a espectrometría de masas (GC-MS) en migraciones acuosas de PET, material de envase alimentario. Por normativa, este compuesto debe estar por debajo de 10ng/g.

The method has implied the DSASE extraction with toluene as solvent; the SPE as clean-up step using NH2 cartridge and GC-MS ion trap system was used as detection method in chemical ionization mode. The final concentrations were around 7.694 to 0.833 μg g-1 for oxoPAHs and 1.627 to 0.332 μg g-1 for nitroPAHs

The determination of sterols in human serum allows the diagnosis of inherited disorders in cholesterol metabolism and the evaluation of cardiovascular disease risk. Ten sterols were included in this work: desmosterol and lanosterol (cholesterol precursors); stigmasterol, cholestanol, campesterol, sitosterol and sitostanol (phystosterols) and 7-α-hydroxy 4-cholesten-3-one, 24-hydroxycholesterol and 27-hydroxycholesterol (oxysterols). Historically, sterols have been analyzed by gas chromatography, which involves laborious and time-consuming derivatization steps. Nowadays, liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry has also been used for the analysis of sterols in serum and mammalian cells and tissues.The aim of this study is to reduce the sample processing time of the determination of sterols in human serum.Two different approaches have been compared: an off-line and on-line system. Both methods need a suitable cartridge for cleaning the sample before its subsequent chromatography analysis. Solid phase extraction (SPE) cartridges were used for off-line sample treatment. Six different retention mechanisms were studied, including nonpolar, polar and ionic interactions. In the on-line system, the sample treatment was conducted with the help of a restricted access material (RAM). This sorbent represent a special class of materials that are able to fractionate a biological sample into protein and analyte fractions, based on molecular weight cut-off. The limits of quantification obtained in the off-line method were between 8 and 274 ng/mL. In the on-line method limits of detection and quantification found ranged between 0.01 ng/mL (7-α-hydroxy-4-cholesten-3-one) and 0.5 μg/mL (sitostanol) and from 0.03 ng/mL and 1.7 μg/mL respectively.

The use of biocides in adhesives is widely extended. However, when adhesives are used in food packaging materials, it is important to determine their concentration not only in the packaging materials but also in migration tests, in order to ensure the food safety. Isothiazolin derivatives are low volatile compounds and often used for this purpose. However, the analytical sensitivity is very poor either in GC-MS or in HPLC-UV and an enrichment step is required. The present study deals with the development of a liquid microextraction procedure for enhancing the sensitivity of the determination of 2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one (MIT) and 5-chloro-2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one (CMIT) in adhesives and food simulants. The procedure involves three phases and a semipermeable polypropylene (PP) membrane which contains 1-octanol as organic phase. The donor and acceptor phases are aqueous acidic and alkaline media respectively and the final liquid phase is analyzed by RP-HPLC-UV. The detection limits of these biocides are 0.037 and 0.147 μg g-1 for MIT and CMIT respectively. Three different adhesive samples were successfully analyzed. The procedure was compared with the direct analysis using UPLC-Q-TOF, where the identification of the compounds and the quantification values were confirmed. The results obtained are shown and discussed.
