The article reports on the results of the Spine Patient Outcomes Research Trial intervertebral disk herniation observation cohort, a non-randomized clinical trial in which patients were able to choose whether to receive a surgical or nonsurgical treatment for lumbar disk herniation. Patients that received standard open diskectomy reported greater relief in pain than patients who chose nonoperative treatments, which included education and counseling, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, narcotic analgesic agents, physical therapy, and epidural injections.
