The study investigated the effect of low-crude protein (CP), essential aminoacids (EAAs) and conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) on broiler growth performance. From 1 to 6 days of age, 196 male broiler chicks fed the same basal diet containing 22.5% of crude protein. From 7-28 days the chicks were assigned to 7 treatments (4 replicates, 7 birds/replicate). The control group fed a 21.5% CP diet, supplemented with dl-methionine (Met) and l-lysine (Lys). The aim of this study is to know the effect of different solid feed and milk intake during suckling on performance around weaning and on caecal content characteristics at weaning. In order to obtain different intakes of milk and solid feed, 13 litters of pregnant females (PF) inseminated the day after delivery and 14 litters of non-pregnant females (NPF) were compared. At birth the litters were equalized at eight pups and during lactation dead pups were replaced by pups of the same age from nursing does. Compared to the PF group, rabbits in the NPF group had a higher milk intake (26.0 versus 21.4 g/day; P < 0.01) and lower solid feed intake (9.1 versus 11.5 g/day; P < 0.01) between 20 and 28 days of age. No significant difference was observed between the two groups in weight gain before and post-weaning (28-49 days). At weaning, the rabbits in group PF showed higher values in caecal content (g 26.3 versus 22.6; P < 0.05) and volatile fatty acids (mmol/l 52.2 versus 43.6; P < 0.01) and lower values in empty caecal weight (g 7.18 versus 7.78; P < 0.05), C3 (6.4 versus 9.3%; P < 0.01) and C3/C4 ratio (0.39 versus 0.63; P < 0.01) than the group NPF. On the basis of the above results, it may be concluded that the quantity of solid feed and milk intake before weaning influenced the charac- teristics of the caecal content, but not the performance of rabbits around weaning.

This study aimed to ascertain the effect of different solid feed and milk intake during suckling on productive performanceand on caecal content characteristics at weaning (28 days). In order to obtain different intakes of milk and solid feedfrom 16 days, 16 litters were maintained at ten pups per litter (Group L10), while the other 16 were reduced to five(Group L5). During lactation dead pups were replaced by pups with the same age from nursing does.From day 18 to day 28 of lactation, milk intake was lower for the L10 group than for the L5 group (22.2 vs 30.1 g/d; P< 0.01), while solid feed intake was higher (6.6 vs 3.4 g/d; P < 0.01). In this period, the L10 group had a lower growthrate (16.2 vs 21.0 g/d; P < 0.01) and lower weight at weaning (471.7 vs 527.2 g; P < 0.01) than Group L5. At weaning,the rabbits in Group L10 recorded higher total VFA production (50.7 vs 44.1 mmol/l; P < 0.01) and lower pH (6.0vs 6.39; P < 0.01), propionate (7.4 vs 9.2 mol/100 mol VFA; P < 0.05) and C3/C4 ratio (0.45 vs 0.61; P < 0.05) thanthose of Group L5.No significant difference was observed between the two groups in post-weaning mortality and live weight at day 77 (2321vs 2347 g, respectively for L10 and L5). From 28 to 35 days, feed intake (71.2 vs 66.1 g; P < 0.01) and daily weightgain (40.1 vs 35.9 g; P < 0.01) were higher in L10 than in L5.

The present study aimed to investigate the effect of storage duration of frozen inoculum on fermentation parametersobtained with the in vitro gas production technique. Two non-predigested diets differing in chemical composition andespecially crude fibre content (low fibre diet: 13.8%; high-fibre diet: 22.6%) were ground to pass a 1 mm screen andsubjected to fermentation with the same inoculum frozen for different periods: after 1 month (inoculum 1), after 2months (inoculum 2) and after 3 months (inoculum 3). The inoculum used was obtained from the caecal content of 75-day-old NZW rabbits. After defrosting, the caecal content was diluted with the medium 1:1 (V/V) and squeezed throughsix layers of gauze to obtain the inoculum. The substrate affected several fermentation parameters. In particular, thehigh-fibre diet had lower potential and cumulative gas production (A = ml/g 220 vs 256; P < 0.01 and OMCV ml/g 185vs 221; P < 0.01), lower organic matter degradability (OMl 67.2% vs 58.0%; P < 0.01) and production of volatile fattyacids (mmol/g 56.2 vs 49.8; P < 0.01), and took more time to obtain gas production equal to A/2 (B = h 11.8 vs 10.1;P < 0.01) compared with the low-fibre diet. However, the three inocula had very similar gas production kinetics, overlappingvalues of degraded organic matter (62.4%, 62.7% and 62.7% respectively for inocula 1, 2 and 3) and similarproduction of VFA (54.0, 52.2 and 52.8 mmol/g, respectively for inocula 1, 2 and 3). This research showed it is possibleto use frozen inoculum for at least 3 months and in this time interval obtain the same parameters of in vitro fermentation.

The aims of this study were to evaluate the correlation between in vitro crude protein digestibility coefficients of insect meals from Tenebrio molitor (TI) and Hermetia illucens (HI) and their chemical composition traits as well as to develop regression equations able to estimate the in vitro crude protein digestibility (CPd) from proximate analysis of insect meals. Twelve samples of insect meals (6 from TM larvae, TM 1-6 and 6 from HI larvae, HI 1-6) were obtained from different producers and analysed for chemical composition and in vitro crude protein digestibility by a two-step enzymatic method (digestion with pepsin and trypsin-enriched pancreatin). For both insect meal samples, CPd was negatively correlated to ADF and chitin contents, while just for HI there was a positive correlation (PTenebrio molitor samples and the 98.30% for Hermetia illucens. In the second step, the amount of protein linked to ADF was added in the model for T. molitor and CP for H. illucens samples. The coefficients chitin is the main constituent of insect body able to affect the crude protein digestibility of Tenebrio molitor and Hermetia illucens larvae meals estimated by an in vitro enzymatic method.

Two days before kindling, 228 New Zealand White rabbit does were homogeneously divided into two groups (114 does per group) and fed the same diet. After delivery, the litters were equalized to 8 pups. From 1 to 35 days of age (weaning), the control group (CONT) did not receive any treatment while in the experimental group (LAC) the nests were sprayed with a commercial product containing lyophilized Lactobacillus plantarum dissolved in water (12 g/L). L. plantarum was sprayed on the litters (5 mL per rabbit) once a day during seven consecutive days after delivery. After one week of rest, the treatment was repeated for another week according to the same experimental protocol. Mortality rate, recorded on all the litters (912 rabbits per group) was significantly lower in the LAC group (9.9 vs 17.2%; Pin vivo performance of the 24 litters per group, and rabbits of both groups reached a similar weight at weaning (938 vs 932 g for LAC and CONT groups, respectively). Rabbits from the LAC group showed fermentative activity of caecal microflora (total volatile fatty acids 24.8 vs 14.5 mmol/L; Pvs 63.9% of total white blood cells; PL. plantarum (1.25x106 CFU/g). It might be supposed that the changes in caecal microflora can affect our results and improve the sanitary status of Lactobacillus-sprayed rabbits in the period 1-35 days of age.

Intensive rabbit breeding normally involves the use of small collective cages housing from 2 to 8 rabbits according to the surface area of the cage. Average density normally lies between 15 and 18 rabbits/m2. Increased interest in safeguarding animal welfare in livestock farming and the need to reduce intensive rabbit production costs have led in recent years to studying alternative housing to the classic cage. In this context, rabbit breeding in colonies could represent an interesting alternative to the classic cage. Colonial breeding and greater space availability appear to better satisfy the behavioural needs of rabbits and their welfare (Ferrante et al., 1997). The aim of this study was to improve knowledge on the effect of group size on productive performance and egg quality of hens raised in furnished cages equally designed. A total of 520, 15-week-old Lohmann Brown laying hens were divided into 2 groups to have a similar initial body weight (average 1392±16.3 g). The cages of S25 group (240 L x 78 W x 50 H cm, 749 cm2/hen) hosted a total of 200 hens, while those of S40 group (462 L x 65 W x 50 H, 751 cm2/hen) included 320 birds. Experimental data were recorded after an adaptation period of 5 weeks (20 to 36 weeks of age). Hens were submitted to 15 h of light/d. The average temperature inside the building was 24.6±2.5°C over the entire experimental period with higher values at 24, 26, 28 and 30 weeks of age. The relative humidity recorded inside the building was 55% at week 20 and 60% all through the experimental period. Two hundred and fifty-six Hyla rabbits were equally divided into two groups fed the same commercial concentrates supplied ad libitum (group AL) or restricted to 90 % of ad libitum (group RES) from weaning (35 d) to slaughter (85 d). Mortality was recorded daily. On 20 rabbits per group feed intake and live weight were recorded, respectively, on a daily and weekly basis. Samples of concentrates and faeces were collected and chemical composition and acid insoluble ashes were determined, the latter to estimate nutrient digestibility. In order to find an alternative source of inoculum to caecal content for studying the in vitro feed digestibility in domesticated ostriches, caecal content and faeces of 4 male birds were used as inocula for an in vitro gas production trial. Three alfalfa (hay, AH; green , GA; dehydrated, DA) were used as substrates. Caecal content and faeces, diluted respectively 1:2 (CI) and 1:4 (FI) with an anaerobic medium and were used as inocula. Gas production was recorded 22 times up to 120 h of incubation and fermentation characteristics (e.g. degraded organic matter, OMd; potential gas production, A; maximum fermentation rate, Rmax; volatile fatty acid, VFA) were studied by inoculum and substrate. CI showed a higher OMd (67.90 vs 64.60 %, respectively for CI and FI, P < 0.01) but lower A (200.6 vs 212.6 ml/g, respectively for CI and FI, P < 0.01) and Rmax (5.94 vs 6.56 ml/h, respectively for CI and FI, P < 0.05) than FI. No differences were found in tVFA production. The significant higher value of branched chain proportion [(isovaleric + isobutyrate)/tVFA] for CI (0.039 vs 0.032 respectively for CI and FI, P < 0.05) indicate a higher degradation protein for this inoculum.

Four groups each consisting in 440, 60 days old rabbits, were fed, respectively, four experimental diets: (1) MOS_0.5 (Bio-Mos® at 0.5 g/kg); (2) MOS_1.0 (Bio-Mos® at 1.0 g/kg); (3) MOS_ 1.5 (Bio-Mos® at 1.5 g/kg) and (4) antibiotics (AGP, colistin sulphate 144 mg/kg; tylosin 100 mg/kg and oxytetracyclin 1000 mg/kg). Up to slaughter age (82 days of age) mortality rate was recorded daily. For each group, 64 rabbits were controlled weekly for live weight to calculate daily weight gain (DWG). Feed intake (and, by consequence feed conversion ratio) was measured, weekly, per group. At 82 days 16 rabbits per group were slaughtered and carcass traits were recorded. No differences were recorded among groups in live weight at different age and in daily weight gain but, in particular during the last week, AGP and MOS_0.5 groups showed higher feed intake and less favourable feed conversion ratio. MOS_1.0 group showed significantly higher incidence of empty gastro-intestinal tract but not differences were found for dressing out percentage. Perirenal fat showed a lower incidence in MOS than in AGP groups.

Nowadays there is an increasing interest towards breeding systems, also for rabbit meat production, that are more mindful of animal welfare through an attenuation of the productive cycles intensity. These particular rearing techniques provide a delaying of the weaning age to reduce young rabbits stress. The present experiment is part of a wider research (Pinna et al., 2004; Marongiu et al., 2004) conducted in a sardinian farm in which rabbits are usually weaned at about 60 days of age. Surely this managerial choice could be considered rather questionable but from a scientific point of view could also represent the occasion to examine the productive performance of rabbits submitted to such a late weaning. The final part of the survey, regarding the carcass composition and the meat chemical-nutritional characteristics, was carried out through the comparison of two groups of rabbits weaned at 28 and at 63 days of age respectively.

Four groups, each consisting of 684 weaned (35 days) hybrid Hyla rabbits were fed ad libitum the same commercial concentrate supplemented, respectively, with antibiotics (AGP group: colistin sulphate 144 mg/kg; tylosin 100m g/kg and oxytetracyclin 1000 mg/kg) or with mannan oligosac- charides (MOS) at 0.5 (group MOS_0.5), 1.0 (group MOS_1.0) and 1.5 g/kg (group MOS_1.5). Up to 60 days, mortality rate was recorded daily. For each group, 64 rabbits were controlled weekly for live weight to calculate daily weight gain (DWG). Feed intake (and, by consequence, feed conversion ratio) was measured, weekly, per group. No differences were observed for live weight during the trial, while DWG showed an alternate trend, in general, significantly lower for AGP group, exclusive of the third week (49- 56 days). Exclusive of the first week of the trial feed intake was higher for AGP than the other groups and the feed conversion ratio was more favourable for MOS groups. Mortality rate was significantly higher (34.2%) in AGP groups. The lowest mortality was recorded in MOS_1.0 group (7.75%).

One hundred forty-four sharpsnout seabream of about 100 g initial body weight were randomly stocked in 12 experiment tanks (180 L). Testing conditions included 12 fish per tank, with triplicate tanks for treatment. The experimental period lasted 150 days. Average water temperature was 21.9±1.6°C, salinity was 30.0‰ and pH ranged from 7 to 8, throughout the experiment. A control diet (FM) was made from fish meal. One similar diet (SBM) was made with approximately 40% of the protein supplied by soybean meal. The remaining two diets (SBM-MOS and SBM-INU) were formulated adding 8 g of mannanoligosaccharide (MOS) and inulin (INU) per kg of the SBM diet, respectively. The results showed that mean final weight (average values 234.4 g), specific growth rate (average values 0.585), feed conversion rate (average values 2.05) and protein efficiency ratio (average values 1.01) were unaffected by MOS or INU supplementation to SBM diet. Body proximate composition was affected by MOS and INU supplementation. Fish fed SBM-MOS and SBM-INU diets showed the highest moisture level and the lowest lipid content. Also the total polyunsaturated fatty of the lipids was reduced by MOS and INU in comparison to SBM diet alone.

AbPasrtartuabcetrculosis is a chronic infection of domestic and wild ruminants, caused by Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis. The persistence of paratuberculosis infection for months up to years without exhibiting any clinical signs makes the diagnosis and control program a difficult proposition. Limited informations on prevalence of paratuberculosis in water buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis) are available. We carried out a study on 1350 buffaloes belonging to 56 herds in the Caserta province, of Campania region, Italy. The prevalence of infected buffalo dairy herds was estimated by a commercial ELISA kit of individual blood samples of animals over 24 months of age. On the basis of performance (sensitivity 43%, specificity 99.3%) of ELISA test on serum, the resulting true prevalence at animal level and at herd level was 4% (95% CI 3% to 5%) and 74,1% (95% CI 71.8% to 76%). Considering the paucity of epidemiological reports in the region our results could be a useful contribution towards the prevention of buffalo paratuberculosis in the area.

A total of 210 unsexed 1-day old Arbor Acres broiler chicks were wing banded and randomly distributed among 30 cages of 7 birds per cage keeping equal initial BW during days 1-20 of age. A factorial design (2×3) was used in which there were two feed forms (mash vs crumble diet) and three enzyme treatments (unsupplemented, phytase, phytase plus multienzyme). Each treatment was replicated 5 times with 7 chicks per replicate. Body weight (BW), body weight gain (BWG) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) of fed chicks were significantly improved when the crumble diet was administered. However, feed intake of chicks fed on the crumble feeds was significantly lower than those fed the mash diet. Digestibility of ether extract and crude fiber was significantly greater in groups fed the crumble diet than those fed the mash diet. Enzyme supplementation significantly and similarly increased growth and production index, and improved FCR. Also greater digestibility of crude protein and crude ash was observed but growth during days 8-14 days of age and crude fibre digestibility were significantly greater in those chicks receiving the multienzyme plus phytase supplement than those receiving phytase alone. Crumble feed supplemented with multienzyme resulted in the highest performance and nutrient digestibility of broilers during days 1-20 of age.

One-hundred-forty-four sharpsnout seabream of about 100 g initial body weight were randomly divided in 12 experimental tanks (180 litre each). Testing conditions included 12 fish per tank, with triplicate tanks for treatment. The experimental period lasted 114 days. Average water temperature was 21.9±1.6°C, salinity was 30.0‰ and pH ranged from 7 to 8. Four isonitrogenous-isolipidic diets were tested: a control diet (FM) with fish meal as the sole protein source; a second diet (SBM) with approximately 40% of the protein supplied by soybean meal. The remaining two diets were formulated adding 8 g of MOS and FOS per kg of the SBM diet respectively. Average final weight, specific growth rate, feed conversion ratio and protein efficiency ratio remained unaffected by partial fish meal substitution and by MOS or FOS supplementation. Also apparent digestibility coefficients values for organic matter, protein, lipid and energy were not significantly affected by dietary treatment.

We investigated the antibiotic resistance of a collection of 94 strains (55.6%) of haemolytic Escherichia coli (E. coli) isolated in 169 diarrhoeic faecal samples from buffalo (Bubalus Bubalis) calves. Bacterial colonies on McConkey and EHLY agar that showed the morphology of E. coli were biochemically tested and then, furtherly classified as haemolytic, using PCR-based assays for enterohemorrhagic E. coli hly (hlyEHEC) virulence gene. When the pathogenic isolates were tested for their susceptibility to 13 different antibiotics, each tested isolate was found to be highly resistant to more than three antibiotics. In fact, absolute resistance (100% of resistance) to penicillin G, lincomycin, neomycin, was detected. Amoxicillin/clavulonic acid and ampicillin were found to be moderately effective against the majority of isolates (46.8% of resistance). Thirty-two (34%) of the haemolytic E. coli strains were phenotypically resistant to tetracycline. None of the isolated strains of E. coli was resistant to colistin sulfate. We conclude that the high prevalence of antimicrobial resistance detected in our study is a source of concern, and cautious use of antibiotics in food producing animals is highly recommended.
