The appearance of limit cycle oscillations in control systems with fixed threshold based samplers degrades the performance of the control loop, accelerates the wear out of actuators, and introduces an unnecessary communication overhead in distributed control systems. In this paper, the role of the input signals to the control loop is taken into account when analyzing the existence of limit cycles induced by fixed threshold samplers. With this analysis, a methodology to re-tune PID controllers while running to avoid limit cycle oscillations generated by ramp-like excitation signals is presented. In this paper, periodic event-triggered controllers are proposed for the rotary inverted pendulum. The control strategy is divided in two steps: swing-up and stabilization. In both cases, the system is sampled periodically but the control actions are only computed at certain instances of time (based on events), which are a subset of the sampling times. For the stabilization control, the asymptotic stability is guaranteed applying the Lyapunov-Razumikhin theorem for systems with delays. This result is applicable to general linear systems and not only to the inverted pendulum. For the swing-up control, a trigger function is provided from the derivative of the Lyapunov function for the swing-up control law. The use of industrial control systems in simulators facilitates the execution of engineering activities related with the installation and the optimization of the control systems in real plants. "Industrial control system" intends to be a valid term that would represent all the control systems which can be installed in an industrial plant, ranging from complex distributed control systems and SCADA packages to small single control devices. This paper summarizes the current alternatives for the development of simulators of industrial plants and presents an analysis of the process of integrating an industrial control system into a simulator, with the aim of helping in the installation of real control systems in simulators.
