22. Microstructure and microhardness of the Ti15Mo alloy subjected to severe plastic deformation in ?+? condition

Abstract

Metastable b-titanium alloys are perspective candidates for use in biomedicine. For that purpose a high strength of these materials is required. The enhanced strength of these alloys can be achieved by subjecting the material to severe plastic deformation. However, due to the limited ductility of the metastable b-titanium alloys, deformation of the alloy in b solution treated condition at room temperature is sometimes inaccessible. In this study a Ti15Mo alloy in a two phase a+b condition was subjected to equal channel angular pressing at elevated temperature of 400degC. The resulting microstructure after N = 4 and 8 ECAP passes consists of deformed b-phase with elongated a-phase particles. Despite the microstructure is not ultra-fine grained the microhardness of the deformed alloy exhibits higher values compared to the non-deformed counterpart.

23. Ultra-fine grained ?-type TNZT ELI alloy with high strength and low elastic modulus

Abstract

This work deals with the improvement of mechanical properties of medical alloy Ti-34Nb-7Zr-4.6Ta ELI (TNZT) by severe plastic deformation (SPD) techniques at temperatures below the temperature of the onset of phase transformations in order to maintain a low modulus of elasticity. For the formation of a nanostructured state, high pressure torsion (HPT) at room temperature and equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) at 200 degC, that is, below the onset of diffusion o-transformation, were used. It is shown that HPT leads to the formation of the UFG structure in the alloy with the grain size of about 110 nm without changing in the alloy phase composition. The ECAP processing allowed forming a subgrain structure with an average size of grains/subgrains of 500 nm and an ultimate tensile strength of 745 MPa, which exceeded the ultimate tensile strength after the standard aging in the (a+b) area (686 MPa). The issues of the effect of SPD on changes in the structure, phase transformations in the alloy and ways of maintaining a low modulus of elasticity in this alloy are discussed.
