In the world a number of researches are intensively being conducted on the preparation of new paper compositions based on natural polymers, expanding the application scope of products with unique and rare properties using not only plant fibers but also non-traditional fibers, the development of traditional papers for priority areas in this field and manufacturing paper products from mineral fibers with the help of existing devices. Systematic, regular studies of the use of inorganic binders in the preparation of sheet (sheet) materials based on mineral fibers have not yet been carried out by the method of paper technology. Paper products were obtained from cellulose-containing plants. Several quality indicators of paper products were studied. These are: Tearing length, tearing resistance, bending resistance, number of bendings in both directions.

Eucalyptus is one of the major species used for pulp and paper industry. As industries develop, the need for Eucalyptus supply increases. However, there are challenges plantation companies must specifically determining eucalyptus market price potential risks in eucalyptus plantation and how eucalyptus plantation impacts the surrounding environment.. Stakeholders on eucalyptus supply chain have risks which have to be mitigated. The eucalyptus seedling and developer and the supplier hold crucial role in providing good quality eucalyptus raw material for pulp and paper production plants. This research is conducted to explore on ways to mitigate each stakeholders risk, challenges plantation companies face in fulfilling eucalyptus raw material for pulp and paper production plants. There are four stakeholders in eucalyptus supply chain: eucalyptus seedling developer and seller, supplier, distribution centre and pulp and paper production plants. Some of the major risk stakeholders are facing in eucalyptus supply chain are: early cut of eucalyptus trees, farmers’ lack of understanding on growing eucalyptus properly, small stem size, fluctuating eucalyptus wood price and low stock quantity. Some of the minor risk stakeholders are facing: earthquake, over fertilization, overwatering, cold climate, and plant setting. There are four methods used to determine eucalyptus pricing: cost-based pricing, customer-based pricing, competition-based pricing, and statutory pricing. Eucalyptus consume high amount of water which can cause dry areas around eucalyptus plantation area and low groundwater reservoir.

Nowadays, demand of the pulp and paper production increases quickly. That increasing demand has led to demanding of eucalyptus plantation. That is why eucalyptus plantation has rapidly expanded and became the most planted tree species across the world over the last century. Not only because its unique characteristics, increasing of eucalyptus plantation also happened because its growing gives a socio-economic benefits, industrial benefits, and environmental impacts. However, increasing demand of eucalyptus certainly make availability of eucalyptus being determined, known as limited supply chain. Due to the increasing demand and limited supply chain, the eucalyptus wood supply should managed, by integrated the supply chain well. In this research study, the supply chain of eucalyptus wood for pulp and paper industry was diagnosed and divided into three degree, there are direct supply chain, extended supply chain, and ultimate supply chain. Four main stakeholders in this chain identified consisted of the eucalyptus seedling developers and sellers, the suppliers, the distribution centers, and the pulp and paper production plants.

An extreme occurrence within the earth’s system that causes human fatalities, injuries, and property destruction is referred to as a “disaster” from a social perspective. Disaster management is one of the most critical topics around the world. Many countries are getting affected because of its high magnitude impact on economy and loss of life. The Karnataka government must always be on guard and ready to meet problems due to the frequent natural disasters like landslides, floods, droughts, and human-induced dangers. In order to lessen the effect of disasters on the community, the Government of Karnataka has built enhanced institutional structures for disaster risk reduction. The main aim of the review paper of this, is to create awareness about the situations occurring due to any form of disasters and to develop preparedness in younger generation to face disaster situations.

The main idea of this research is to design a rechargeable paper battery from local cheap and available materials. The practical part is represented by adding Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) to conductive polymer (PSS PEDOT) with adding different mineral salts for then study the quantum of electrical conductivity and heat influence on electrical conductivity and acidity factors of the Electrolyte solution.The next step was to produce a rechargeable, flexible battery manufactured from regular cellulose paper, sulfone, and ionic solution.The measurements were made using modern laboratory devices to study the electrical properties, conductivity, resistance (Hall Effect), and voltage quantum of the ionic solution. Through the results we obtained, we noticed an increase in the conductivity of the ionic solution when adding mineral salts. The voltage quantum of one battery ranged between 0.3-0.3 volts, also several batteries were connected in series, and the result was 1.8 volts. Manufactured paper batteries can be recharged with a direct current source and recover their efficiency marked up 98-99%.

A huge amount of newspaper waste is generated in an average Indian household on a daily basis. The ideology behind this study is to amalgamate this paper waste into construction materials. This manuscript is a preliminary initiative for the same motive and explores the feasibility of mixing waste paper pulp into cement mortar for further adopting the practice on construction sites. Different ratios of cement, standard sand and crushed paper pulp (soaked for 72 hours) were administered to cast cement mortar cubes and the same were tested for compressive strength in a compression testing machine. The several trial mixes, partially replacing sand in mortar making were attempted to study the behavior of cement mortar while infused with waste paper pulp. The strength of these cubes were compared to standard cement mortar cubes cast using one part cement and 3 parts of standard sand. The trial ratios of cement, sand and paper pulp were 1:0.5:0.5; 1:0.75:0.25 and 1:0.25:0.75 respectively. Both 7 days as well as 28 days strength was determined. It was found that one part cement, half part standard sand and half a part of waste paper pulp was the most optimum combination yielding satisfactory strength of cement mortar cubes. The compressive strength of standard cube was 7.2 MPa and the same for 1:0.5:0.5 was 6.6 MPa. Thus waste paper pulp infused cement mortar may be used for brickwork and other trivial lean cement members in construction. The purpose of the study is to address two major underlying challenges in modern day construction projects, first being the dearth of river sand availability and secondly the disposal of waste paper which ultimately ends up in landfills subsequently polluting the environment.

Pulp and paper industries are critical to a country’s economic growth. The type of raw material used and the pulping process determine the quality and quantity of wastewater generated. However, the generated wastewater with a dark colour comprises a high concentration of suspended solids, organic content, chemical oxygen demand (COD), volatile organic compounds, and a variety of other impurities. Therefore, in this study, a bench scale activated sludge treatment system was set up using a reactor consisting of an aeration tank with 5000 mg/L initial biomass and a clarifier chamber for the biomass to settle. The reactor was run few weeks with real domestic wastewater as the influent for 3 weeks to acclimatize the sludge inside the reactor. The reactor was then fed with the influent mixture of 20% industrial pulp wastewater and 80% domestic wastewater. Organic and nutrient parameter concentrations are tested from the influent and effluent sample throughout the study duration and recorded for data analysis. The removal of COD and TSS are at 83% and 90% respectively while the averaged BOD value of the treated wastewater is at 74.6%. The conclusion of this project is that the bench scale EAAS is able to treat BOD and TSS according to standard. However, a modification may be required to increase the efficiency of removing COD to meet the requirement standards. This modification could be either by using a biocarrier or an activated carbon to further enhance the treatment efficiency even at higher wastewater concentration.

The use of paper directly proportional to the growth in the number of people. The impact is in the form of environmental problems where there is logging of forest trees, and deforestation so that it affects the ecosystem and the natural environment. Trees are cut down and made into paper for human needs, including to make books as learning media. In the current technological era, the use of books as a medium of learning has an impact on students’ declining motivation to learn. To solve the problem, we proposes the application of Augmented Reality (AR) as a learning medium. This research uses Game Engine Unity and Vuforia which can display 3-dimensional objects, and uses Android as the basis of the system. In this paper, we introduce four equipments of athletic sports. The aim of this research is to reduce the use of paper as a learning medium and increase learning motivation. The result of the research is an Augmented Reality-based athletics introduction application that has been tested for its performance using blackbox testing using various conditions of its marker.

Bioethanol is one of the best alternative form of energy source in place of fossil fuels. In this study, bioethanol was produced from waste paper following a pre-treatment. The isolates used were isolated from fresh palm wine and characterized via standard microbiological methods. The pre-treatment was done using 5%, 10% and 50% concentrations of sulphuric acid and sodium hydroxide respectively. Results obtained showed that the concentration of glucose from the substrates ranged between 0.2-0.8 ppm with 10% sulphuric acid giving the highest glucose yield. The fermentation of the sugar was carried out using Saccharomyces cerevisiae for the production of bioethanol, which was recovered by fractional distillation. From this study, the production of bioethanol from waste paper is a veritable means of shoring up energy deficit especially in the developing countries.

Fomites have been known to harbor significant amount of microbial load and its handling by food vendors poses a significant risk to consumers. In this study, swab samples were collected from vendors handling paper currency; their food contaminated hands, and selected foods-Akara, Suya and Bole. These fomites were evaluated for organisms that may pose a risk of food infection/contamination. The organisms isolated were identified based on their macroscopic, mi-croscopic and biochemical characteristics and comparison with standard reference organisms. From the results obtained, the paper currency had the highest numbers of bacterial and fungal load (too numerous to count – TNTC), food contaminated hands ranged between 12 x 105- 15 x105 cfu/g and the selected foods- Akara, Suya and Bole had 7x105- 12 x105 cfu/g. The bacteria members’ species recorded include Pseudomonas, Streptococcus pyogenes, Shigella, Proteus vulgaris, Escherichia coli, klebsiella pneumonia, Salmonella typhi, Enterobacter sp, Aeromonas hydrophila, Micrococcus luteus. Others include Clostridium sp, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis and Bacillus cereus. The fungal species reported include Aspergillus, Yeast, Penicillium sp. and Saccharomyces spp. Mucor sp. and Rhizopus sp. Members of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli were noted to occur on all the samples surveyed. From this study, it can be deduced that handling of paper currencies by food vendors could serve as a direct and indirect pathway for man-microbe interface.

With the support of new technology, recyclable paper is capable of being both waterproof and fireproof, and it has been used in architectural design to some extent. However, there are limited studies on the use of paper materials in landscape architecture. The purpose of this study is to investigate the potential of paper materials practice in landscape architecture design from both functional and aesthetic perspectives. The method includes two parts: 1. a systematic review to investigate paper’s properties and capabilities to demonstrate it is qualified as a landscape construction material; 2. Provide a prototype to illustrate how to use paper materials in a practical landscape design. This paper found that the application of paper materials in landscape architecture has the following benefits: low-cost material, easy assemble and removal, build fast, easy transport, recyclable, unique material aesthetic feeling, low technical requirement, educational. Through a systematic review and case studies, this study explored the practical application value of paper materials in landscape architecture, and provided a feasible idea and direction for the landscape architecture industry to practice the concept of sustainable development.

Buildings are the main sector in energy consumption and CO2 emissions. Retrofitting of existing building has been identified as one of the significant strategies for reducing the impacts of buildings on energy and environment. However, recent studies have shown that low energy buildings mostly do not perform as expected. These differences are related to different factors including the interaction between occupants and building technologies. Thus, most renovation initiatives have not considered occupant behavior equally to the energy efficiency process. Many of the existing studies have been focused on technological improvements rather than behavioral-related parameters. Hence, this study aims to review the literature on the occupants’ energy perceptions and their behavioral interventions in energy efficient retrofitted residential buildings. The results of the literature review reveal that household’s energy consumption significantly differs according to the various factors including social-economic, cultural, household composition as well as individual attitudes, habits, experiences, and occupant practices. Moreover, the energy consumption in the residential sector is highly dependent on demographic parameters. The demographics factors are classified according to type of family, level of income, age of the occupants, and individuals’ educational status. The findings shows that energy perception gap formulates the energy behavior and it is related to the lack of personal interest, accurate information and individuals’ awareness about how to consume efficiently. Therefore, it is suggested that the level of occupant’s perception on energy, control, or comfort have to be considered during energy efficiency retrofits. The study contributes to understanding of occupants’ behaviors which cause energy performance gap and enlighten approaches to encourage more energy efficient behavior.

The accumulation of paper waste encourages the utilization of HVS paper waste with Collage and Paper Quilling Techniques as a 2-dimensional medium for hair styling learning. The purpose of this study was to understand the process of utilizing HVS paper waste with collage and paper quilling techniques as a 2-dimensional medium for hair styling learning; to explore the design and shape produced in the utilization of HVS paper waste with collage and paper quilling techniques as a 2-dimensional medium for hair styling learning; to learn the validity of 2-Dimensional media for Hair Styling Learning by utilizing HVS Paper Waste using Collage and Paper Quilling Techniques. Development research with qualitative descriptive data analysis was carried out, the process of utilizing HVS paper waste with collage and paper quilling techniques using loose scrolls and multi strips scrolls was explored. Design and shape of hair styling for 5 face shapes. Validity by 5 experts with an average of 89.33% and, the results of final product assessment by 60 students obtained an average of 92.70% based on indicators of aspects of regulation, balance, color, conformity, attractiveness. Utilization of HVS paper waste with Collage and Paper Quilling Techniques as a 2-dimensional medium for hair styling learning is declared very feasible.

Pakcoy is agricultural products and perisable after being harvested. One of methods to inhibit the rate of deterioration is by using packaging. The study aimed to examine the use of conventional and paper on quality changes. Pakcoy is packaged using PP plastic, PE plastic, paper and wrapping plastic. The experiment was designed by using a completely randomized design (CRD. Pakcoy was observed for the 7th days. The variable observed pakcoy were weight loss, color changes (L*, a*, and b* value), TPC content , Pb and Hg content. The results showed that the weight loss observations of PE. Observation of the color variable showed no difference in the various types of packaging but TPC and Pb content were significantly different.

The ability of activated carbon as an adsorber is depended on activating agent used for the activation process. An industrial application of the ethylene adsorption process as well as the design of the necessary equipment requires an accurate model to determine the effect of various factors on the efficiency of the process. The model is needed to predict the efficient activating agent to be applied in carbon activation. One ml of gas containing 200 ppm ethylene was injected into gas-tight jars, to which 4 sheets of nanopore activated carbon paper were placed. The ethylene concentration was measured every 5 minutes until 90 minutes using gas chromatography. The concentration of ethylene absorbed by the nanopore activated carbon paper, then calculated to construct a kinetics model of absorption. Data were analyzed using 4 kinetics models: nonlinear pseudo-first-order, nonlinear pseudo-second-order, Elovich, and Avrami kinetic models. The best adsorption kinetics model that described ethylene adsorption kinetics by nanopore activated carbon paper was the nonlinear pseudo-first-order, with equation model: qt = 1.35734 (1-exp0.15312 t). The compiled model has a match with R2 = 0.9981. The adsorption mechanisms and kinetics aspects was important on the use of adsorbents to remove ethylene in packaging and storage.

In recent years, plastic pollution has become one of the environmental issues of concern. This article explores the hazards of plastic straws and analyzes whether the decision to replace plastic straws with paper straws in the context of plastic restriction is entirely environmentally friendly. The results show that plastic films used in agricultural production remain in the soil after weathering and degradation, affecting soil structure, water and nutrient transfer processes, secondary salinization, and hindering plant growth. Microplastics in terrestrial and marine ecosystems are taken up by and accumulate in organisms and enter the human food web, affecting the human central nervous system and reproductive system. This article concludes that paper straws contain harmful additives, are challenging to recycle and degrade, are costly to build, are not environmentally friendly, and have a low promotional rate by studying their life cycle, content, recycling rate, degradation rate, usage problems, and applying. The paper also introduces the advantages of some new green straws, such as bamboo straws, wheat straws, PLA straws, and stainless-steel straws, which are environmentally friendly, durable, biodegradable, recyclable, and reusable. This essay aims to find better alternatives to address the potential environmental problems associated with plastic straws and mitigate the environmental hazards associated with the use of plastic products.

Paper consumption in Indonesia in 2003 reached 5.31 million tons, in 2004 the need for paper consumption reached 5.40 million tons. Meanwhile, in 2005, paper consumption reached 5.61 million tons and in 2009 it reached 7.50 million tons, and this figure continues to increase by 3% - 4% every year. The increase in consumption and the paper industry in Indonesia will be accompanied by an increase in the need for the main raw material for pulp and paper, namely wood so that environmental damage will occur. Alternative materials other than wood which contain cellulose and can be used for pulp and paper manufacture are Empty Palm Fruit Bunches (EFB) and coconut fiber. Mixed fiber paper or often called composite paper, is paper made from a mixture of two or more kinds of paper pulp with other materials. Composite paper can be made using the pulp of EFB mixed with coconut fiber using a banana peel binder. This study aims to determine the mixture of EFB pulp, coconut coir pulp, and banana peel binder so that it can be obtained mixed fiber paper with tear resistance and tensile strength which is most suitable to be applied as an alternative to packaging paper. Based on the pulp produced from research that has been carried out, the cellulose content ranged from 46,4316% until 48,4993%, and hemicellulose ranged between 18,2699% until 20,7593%. With a high cellulose content, samples of EFB raw materials and coconut fiber can be used as raw materials for making paper.

Art paper is a handicraft product made from fibers derived from plants. Plants that are used as the basic material for making art paper are plants that contain cellulose. One of plants that can be used as the basis for art paper are reeds. Reeds is one type of grass plant that can grow on land that has moist or dry characteristics. The aim of this research is making best-quality art paper from reed waste in order to tackle the environmental problem aftermath production process in reed drink industry. The laboratory activity of this research was carried out in August 2021 in laboratory of Universitas Brawijaya. For analysis, Design Expert 10 software with Response Surface method was used to get the optimum treatment in the process of delignification of reeds. There were two factors used in the Response Surface method, namely the raw material of reeds is the concentration of acetic acid with 85%, 90%, and 95% and cooking time of 30 minutes, 60 minutes, and 90 minutes. The optimum point of reeds delignification was the treatment with a 92.50% of acetic acid concentration and cooking time of 65.87 minutes which obtained cellulose and lignin of 77.501% and 7.352% respectively.

There are quite a lot of paper mill rejects (PMR) as a by-product of paper mills and have not been utilized, currently. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the characteristics of paper mill reject (PMR) to coal and natural biomass and estimate the greenhouse (GHG) emissions of PMR and coal. Coal and PMR taken from five paper mills were analyzed for the content of moisture, proximate parameter (ash, volatile matter, fixed carbon), sulfur (S), gross calorific value (GCV), ash mineral and ash fusion temperature (AFT). The slagging factors of materials were calculated and evaluated. The resulting greenhouse gasses (GHG) emissions was also estimated. The results show that with the high calorific value, low ash and sulfur content of PMR, it has the potential to be used as a coal mixture for boiler fuel. It is very beneficial for the environment due to the low SO2 emissions. PMR has the characteristics of a low slagging index (SI), high fouling index (FI) and Slag Viscosity Index (SVI) which is almost similar with biomass, empty fruit bunches (EFB) and rice husk. The use of PMR as a coal mixture in paper mills in the amount of 10,285 ton/year can reduce greenhouse gases of 63.5 tons CO2-equivalent/year.

Paper made from natural fiber of ampel bamboo (Bambusa vulgaris) and nano-activated carbon from sawdust had been tested as food packaging and showed its ability to maintain freshness and nutritive value of foodstuffs. However, as a packaging material, natural degradability of this alternative natural-fiber paper is required to be tested. This study aims to determine the effect of nano-activated carbon on paper’s biodegradation properties. The results showed that paper treated with nano-activated carbon degraded faster in the soil compared to paper made of bamboo fiber only (control) after 8 weeks of observation. The microorganism population density analysis showed that the paper with nano-activated carbon had a lower microorganism density than the control which accompanied by a decrease in paper weight after 12 weeks of observation. This finding demonstrates the potential utilization of nano-activated carbon as an additive to be inserted into paper to accelerate the biodegradation rate of paper in the soil. The ability of paper to be degraded naturally is very important to support environmental sustainability.

Wood-based forestry industries are one of the strategic sectors in the development for providing a good impact in ecological and socio-economic in a country. Such an industry should have high productivity in order to ensure sustainable resources and an efficient manufacturing process. Based on this fact, tree breeding program is one of the good practices which could be done through the hybridization method to increase the uses from forest genetic resources. This paper presents a review on the basis of the utilization of inter-specific Acacia hybrids resulted from hybridization between two species of Acacia mangium and Acacia auriculiformis for supporting the pulp/paper industry and increasing the forest biodiversity in Indonesia. Improving some traits relevant to the industrial requirements is the main target in the development of Acacia hybrid. This involves fast growth, good wood properties, and tolerance to pests and diseases. The Acacia hybrids could provide some advantages in overcoming the current problems of the forest plantation and industry in which some of them could not be resolved by planting the pure species. In addition, the varies of the Acacia hybrid progenies could be used to increase forest biodiversity, which is important as a genetic base for further breeding purposes and challenges.

This study aims to estimate the shelf life of Bolu Cukke packaged in parchment paper using the Accelerated Shelf Life Testing (ASLT) method. The critical water content parameters in Bolu Cukke are its aroma and its texture. The equilibrium moisture content was obtained from six types of saturated salt solution in the humidity chamber with 7-84% RH. Isothermal sorption curves are obtained by plotting Aw with equilibrium moisture content (Me) which would be tested using five isothermal sorption equation designs to obtain the Mean Relative Deviation (MRD) value. The lowest MRD value is 9.2 obtained from Hasley’s Isothermal equation design. All variables were then collected using the Labuza equation. The results of this study indicated that the estimation of shelf life of Bolu Cukke products in the parchment paper packaging at 30°C with 78% RH is approximately 7 days.

One of the ways to diversify squid products into ready to eat food that has the potential to be developed is paper squid. The main stages in paper squid processing are drying under the sun, pressing, and drying in oven. This research aims to determine the proximate and the amino acid profile contained in paper squid (Loligo edulis, Hoyle). The proximate analysis results showed that paper squid contains 8.25% of moisture content, 3.65% of ash content, 72.28% of protein content, and 11.96% of carbohydrates content. Amino acids detected in paper squid are 15 types of amino acids consisting of 9 essential amino acids and 6 non-essential amino acids. The highest essential amino acid in paper squid is arginine containing 6.24% and the lowest is histidine which is 1.43%. The highest non-essential amino acid in paper squid is glutamic acid which is 12.13% and the lowest is tyrosine which is 2.49%.

Currency is one of the most frequently passed items in the world. It used every day and every way, and it could act as an important vehicle for cross-contamination. This research was aimed to determine how long pathogenic bacteria can survive on currency paper, four pathogenic bacteria including E. coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus subtilis were provided according to laboratory standard methods. Sterile pieces of currency paper were inoculated with the pathogenic bacteria and the survival of bacteria was tested over seven days. The results showed that all tested bacteria differed in time of survival and this survives according to environmental conditions, the type of bacteria and the mode of its resistance, but they were stable and still cultivable after seven days. The second part of this research was to design a simple experimental model to check the efficacy of germicidal and attempted to use ultraviolet light radiation to evaluate the inhibitory effect of most pathogenic microorganisms on currency as a disinfectant. The results revealed that UV is an effective tool, so we recommend using it as a disinfectant for currency.

This paper introduces a new type of moisturizing paper, which makes the material have a stronger moisturizing effect than ordinary transfer paper through the water-based double-layer coating process. At the same time, the paper has a stronger degradation capacity than plastic film paper, more in line with environmental protection requirements. Through the paper printing machine adaptability verification, the paper has easier processing and stronger printing performance. The development and application of this moistening material is a major innovation in the field of moistening packaging materials research.

Now, the need for porang seedlings is very urgent, so it is necessary to provide seedlings in a short amount of time. Among the sources for propagation of porang, the use of seeds as planting material promises to supply large quantities of seedlings. The initial step of preparing the seedlings is germination. The success of germination determines the next step. The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of using trays and jars in reducing infection rates and to determine the rate of germination of porang seeds. This study used a complete random design with 3 replications. Each replication consisted of 50 seeds. While data analysis used unpaired t-test. And the germination method used the top-on-paper method (TPM). The observed-parameters included germination rate at 7 days after planting (dap), 17 dap, and 30 dap; percentage of seed contamination at 7 dap and 11 dap; the percentage of the number of sprouts rooted at 28 dap and 42 dap. The results showed that the percentage of germination using trays and jars at 7 dap, 17 dap, or 30 dap were not significantly different. Seed contamination at 7 dap and rooted-sprouts at 28 dap were not significantly different between tray and jar. However, for seed contamination at 11 dap, the tray produced higher contamination than the jar and the results were significantly different. As for the rooted sprouts at 42 dap, the trays produced lower rooted sprouts than the jar, 44.67% and 89.33% respectively and significantly different. The conclusion of this research was that germination on top-paper method using a jar was better than a tray

Street auto collision has been expanding in the Southern Region of Tigray, of which this region was appeared to have disturbing rates. Hydraulic cutting technology can effectively improve the gas drainage efficiency of low permeability coal seam, which is worthy of promotion.

Fish ladders are structures that are designed and constructed at water barriers, such as dams, to assist fish to migrate and complete their life cycle between different habitats without interruption or delay. The design of the fish ladders is considered a complicated process. It depends on two essential aspects; the biological and environmental nature of the fish. Consequently, hydraulic parameters such as velocity, turbulent kinetic energy, and flow patterns have to be designed to suit the fish’s capabilities without affecting it. This study is dedicated to performing an overview of the design of one of the most common fish ladders, the vertical slot fish ladder. A brief on an empirical and numerical design method is presented first. Then, a review of the recent literature on the vertical slot fish ladder design is explored. From reviewing several works on the design of the vertical slot fish ladder, it was found that important design parameters, such as the velocity of the flow, the turbulence, the slope of the fish ladder channel, have already been investigated in previous studies. However, it was observed that other important parameters, such as the slot angle, have not been investigated or explored in the literature. It is predicted that this parameter has a vital influence on the velocity of the flow inside the fish ladder which controls all other design parameters.

The production of floor slabs with their high requirements for fire protection, thermal mass, and sound insulation is a central challenge in multi-storey timber construction. The research presented in this paper explores the possibilities of a timber-earth slab (T.E.S.) that can meet such high demands while being fully recyclable. T.E.S. comprises a hybrid structure, which aims to combine the strong tensile properties of wood with the beneficial properties of earth in terms of thermal mass, thermal activation capabilities, fire resistance, and sound insulation. It integrates a novel material technology capable of casting earth with low water content and combines it with robotic technology that enables the bespoke fabrication of a filigree wooden structure tailored to mechanically interlock with the earth infill. The proposed method makes it possible to place the earth infill in the lower part of the floor slab and thus expose it to the interior space, whereby its storage mass and component activation can be fully utilized. This paper presents the concept and design principles, initial findings on the system’s loadbearing behaviour, as well as the experimental validation of the novel fabrication process in 1:4 and 1:1-scale demonstrators, in which the general feasibility of the system in assessed. The paper finally discusses the proposed methods and results of the experiments and outlines further steps for transferring the system into building practice.

In building life cycle assessment, construction site processes are currently hardly accounted for in detail. If considered, the emission values are determined by globally capturing effort values and by allocating them to individual work steps, equipment, or materials. To identify improvement potential to decarbonize construction activities, detailed process data must be captured for specific processes to determine the carbon dioxide emissions of single processes. The results can then be aggregated to larger process units e.g. to components or trades. To fully implement this approach, a recording of process-specific data at construction site is necessary. Therefore, the basic framework to record specific processes at construction site is developed in this article and LCA methodology to systematically link them to emissions is explained. Further, the method of computer vision for automated recording of construction site activities is being presented.

The efficiency of color and COD removal in wastewater treatment is one of the essential factors. High color removal can encourage the reuse of wastewater as raw material in the recycled paper industry. Electrocoagulation (EC) process is effective pollutant removal in wastewater due to the adsorption, coagulation, and flotation. In this study, recycled paper industrial wastewater was used; this type of waste has a high content of disturbing pollutants, and treatment with electrocoagulation has not been widely carried out for this type of waste. EC treatment has a relatively high level of effectiveness to remove these pollutants; the influential factors studied include initial pH, applied current, supporting electrolyte, and processing time on a laboratory scale. The degradation of color, COD, and energy used was also evaluated. The best color removal was obtained as 100% at 80 minutes of process, and a COD concentration is 147 mg/L, and the energy used is 13.56 kWh/L.

Resource scarcity and global warming call for ambitious strategies in the construction sector to meet the ever-growing demand for indoor spaces with minimal resource consumption and positive environmental impacts. In line with the need to introduce circular economy in the construction sector, the German Public Sustainability Certification System (BNB) is revising its indicator for disassembly, separation and reuse. The proposed assessment is intended to guide in the planning process and to point out challenges and potentials of the circular economy by making the complex interactions and requirements comprehensible in detail. The continuity of the assessment from the building material to the building component to the entire building allows users to track the impact of changes made at each level of aggregation. Based on extensive background research, end-of-life categories are assigned to building materials according to their reusability, taking into account assembly techniques and adjacent, associated materials. Example building components illustrate the method and show the impact of design changes. At the building level, the quantity determination of materials in the end-of-life condition allows transparent comparison of different design variants and documents in detail the material inventory for use in building material passports. Future developments envision the inclusion of building services in the circularity assessment, benchmarking of circularity at the building level, and integration of circular qualities into life cycle analysis calculations.

According to the current situation of lightning protection in Hunan distribution lines, the differentiated lightning protection management strategy is proposed, which takes into account the ground flash density and special landform factors. And the field application in the past year shows that the effect of lightning protection is good. However, there are also corresponding management and technical problems in the implementation process. The corresponding solution ideas and suggestions are put forward in this paper based on the fully investigation and the experimentation simulation, which has the certain reference value for further improving the lightning withstand level of hunan distribution lines.

In a thermal power plant flue gas wet desulphurization system appeared the problem of high-moisture content of gypsum. The paper combines the desulfurization system operating statement and laboratory analysing results. Meanwhile, it analyses the factors composed high-moisture content. The conclusion shows that there are several main factors influence the gypsum dehydration effect, namely content of dust concentration about the system entrance disposal situation of desulphurization wastewater and the quantity of air oxidation. The paper also shows that the gypsum cyclone running condition directly influences the effect of gypsum slurry dehydration. The paper suggests that,in order to ensure the safe operation of desulphurization system, the correspondent treatment measures and suggestions were put forward.

For optimum growth of the agriculture industry certain urea-based fertilizers are used to provide better Nitrogen content to the soil, but this growth comes with a cost in terms of carbon footprint. In this paper, life cycle assessment (LCA) is conducted for urea production having a minimum of 46% nitrogen content. For LCA, a fertilizer industry with 3850 MTPD urea production capacity is considered with an annual target of 1.27 MMTPA, while the functional unit is taken as 1MT of urea production. This paper is concerned about finding the MT equivalent CO2 required per MT urea production. The coal used for syngas preparation is from G9 to G14 meaning the gross calorific value (GCV) ranges from 4601 to 3400 GCV per kilocalories. The carbon footprint of catalyst is considered and showed its importance when it comes to larger production size. In this analysis, MT CO2equivalent per MT urea is 0.714and this result is also compared with the data of the developing countries.

Industrial 4.0 accelerates the need to introduce clean energy to accommodate the increase in electricity demand globally without causing environmental issues. Metal-air battery is a new type of energy storage system in which the metal anode is consumed to generate electricity through the electrochemical reaction. Among various types of the metal anode, aluminum is a promising energy carrier. Aluminum-air battery shows advantages such as high capacity, abundance, low cost, and being environmentally friendly. Traditional aqueous aluminum-air battery experiences restriction from application due to its self-corrosion issues. In this study, instead of reducing or limiting the self-corrosion issues, a different approach is proposed so to make use of the self-corrosion issues of the aluminum-air battery. By incorporating an additional hydrogen-air subcell to the aluminum-air battery, this hybrid system turned the self-corrosion issue into a beneficial reaction by utilizing the hydrogen gas produced from the aluminum anode as the fuel to power the hydrogen-air fuel cell and improving the overall power performance. The electrical performance of each system is studied experimentally using potassium hydroxide electrolytes. The hybrid system shows a great improvement as compared to a single system. The maximum power is improved by more than 40%. This study shows that the hybrid design is feasible in enhancing the aluminum-air battery performance and yet, maintaining low cost and low weight in nature.

The article discusses the principles for the formation of a sustainable architecture of office spaces in the context of such a global environmental problem as a pandemic. Current trends and general principles of the formation of office spaces in the post-COVID period, the direct relationship between the health of employees, the office ecosystem and the concept of "typology of organizational cultures of the company"are analysed. The main attention is paid to the architectural aspects of organizational models of office objects. The principles and techniques for creating a healthy efficient workspace, which a sustainable office complex should have, are formulated. The reconceptualization of the organization of office activities and methods of adapting traditional office spaces in a pandemic with the prospect of their development in the post-COVID period are considered. The most "viable"types of office spaces and models of workplace organization are singled out in these conditions. It is based on the opinions of business experts related to the further development of office activities, possible changes in internal strategies in the organizational culture of companies. This paper introduces the extraction of chitosan from shrimp shells and the preparation of sunscreen by using physical degradation method to extract chitosan oligosaccharide from chitosan. In this paper, natural chito-oligosaccharides were extracted from shellfish waste and used as ingredients to make natural sunscreen, which was an exploration of chito-oligosaccharides in the field of daily use in fine chemical industry.

Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) treatment with anaerobic landfill bioreactor utilizes landfill as a place of biodegradation and produces methane gas which can be used as renewable alternative energy source. Anaerobic landfill bioreactor technology is a landfill development method that can increase waste degradation and increase biogas production. The increase of biogas and the removal of pollutants from leachate needs to pay attention to the factors that influence the success of anaerobic landfill bioreactor, including pH value, temperature, water content, and COD concentration after recirculation, and methane production. The relationship between these factors was discussed in depth in this paper. The method used is a narrative review where metadata is obtained from Google Scholar and Web of Science. This study explains the development of an anaerobic landfill bioreactor and conducts a synthesis for future research development plans by leachate recirculation.

Due to their non-toxicity and biodegradability, natural polymeric flocculants have gained popularity in water and wastewater treatment in recent years. Because of its broad availability, renewability, sustainability, and surface modification potential, cellulose, the most common polymer on the planet, is regarded as one of the foundation polymers for flocculant production and modification. The following article consists of a review of the latest developments regarding biopolymers, in particular, cellulose as a natural flocculant. One of the plants that can be developed in Indonesia is Boehmeria nivea, or what is known as Ramie, which contains cellulose that is still not utilized optimally. There is a method of isolation of alpha-cellulose derived from Boehmeria nivea and its application as a flocculant in synthetic wastewater presented in this paper. The alpha-cellulose of Boehmeria nivea was used as a flocculant in jar testing using kaolin suspension (5 g/L). The study shows that adding alpha-cellulose as an aid to PAC slightly increased the turbidity removal efficiency, and further modification of alpha-cellulose by cationic grafts into cationic cellulose is needed.

Wood pellets are renewable fuels from biomass which can be an alternative substitute for petroleum fuels. One of the raw materials for making wood pellets is sawdust from the sawmill industry or other wood craftsmen. Sawdust waste that dumped for a long time will reduce its moisture content (over-dry) and will be difficult to form into pellets. In this paper, we studied the effect of adding liquid solution ie. water, tapioca starch solution, pure molasses solution and dilute molasses solution on over-dry sawdust to the characteristic properties of wood pellet torrefaction. The sawdust material was collected from the wood sawmill in the Bogor District. There were five treatments i.e sawdust (control), sawdust + 10% water, sawdust + 10% tapioca starch solution, sawdust + 10% pure molasses solution, sawdust + 10% diluted molasses solution. The wood pellet torrefaction properties were investigated using a manual hot press at the temperature of 210°C. The results showed that the addition of pure molasses solution produced better pellets than other treatments, with properties i.e water content of 2.65%, the ash content of 1.45%, volatile matter 76.72%, fixed carbon 19.18%, the calorific value of 19.56 MJkg−1, density 0.84 gcm−3, and compressive strength 52.22 kgcm−2.

Oil and gas sectors generate large amounts of oily wastewater, which is called produced water. In which, it contains high concentrations of hazardous organic and inorganic pollutants. This paper attempts to evaluate the performance and quality of using a polyethersulfone ultrafiltration membrane (UFM) to treat the produced water of Al-Ahdab oil field (Wassit, Iraq). 8 rectangular flat sheets of polyethersulfone ultrafiltration membrane were used. The area of each is 60 cm2 and pore size about 15 nm used in the experimental work. Prepared UFM is characterized by determining the surface morphology by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The result showed that the UFM indicated high removal efficiency in all parameters and especially oil and grease and total suspended solid but in general it still less than the requirement of water reuse. The results showed that, a combination of a conventional treatment method and UFM technology have higher efficiency than using UFM only.

The paper presents the results of microscopic analysis of the content of elements on the surface of clay samples after treatment with an acidic mixture of HV:HF. The analysis showed that as a result of the dissolution of clay and quartz, quartz dissolves faster, the Si/Al ratio on the sample surface decreased, which indicated the formation of a protective film of aluminum phosphate silicate. The studies of the ability of chemical reagents to dissolve clay by the method of weight loss showed that in the HV:HF system, the dissolution rate of clays is much lower due to the formation of a coating layer. The stage of the increase in the rate of dissolution occurs when a part of this layer is dissolved. The studies of the ability of the HV:HF chemical reagent system to dissolve silicon showed that the amount of dissolved silicon varied linearly with the exposure time and the rate of silicon dissolution was proportional to the HF concentration in the system. The dissolution rate of silicon in the HV:HF system is much higher than in the HCl:HF system at the same HF concentration. This is a significant advantage of the proposed system of chemical reagents HV: HF in comparison with the traditional HCl:HF system. HV: HF system dissolves calcium carbonate much more efficiently than traditional hydrochloric or acetic acid systems.

Saving energy resources in the fishing industry is an important task. The purpose of the study is to determine rational schemes and operating modes of air conditioning systems for drying fish. The methodology for calculating the air conditioning system for drying fish and on its basis a computer program in the mathematical package MathCAD is developed. Two air conditioning schemes are considered: a scheme using an air heater and a chiller and a scheme using a chiller and a heat pump. The schemes were analyzed from the standpoint of energy indicators. The parameters of the air supplied to the drying chamber were taken for calculations on the basis of the need to maintain the parameters set by the fish processing technology. In this paper, air conditioning schemes for drying fish are considered, an analysis of the main energy costs during the operation of equipment is carried out. On the basis of calculations, the advantages and disadvantages of the systems, their energy costs for maintaining the specified technological modes are shown. The influence of temperature and flow rate of cold outdoor air and the use of heat recovery units for the exhaust air are shown. It was established that when using outside air with heat exchangers, it is possible to significantly reduce the consumption of heat energy for the technological mode in the cold season. In the absence of heat sources, the scheme with a refrigeration machine and a heat pump has an advantage. The research results were introduced at the fish enterprise of the Astrakhan region by the LLC “Technology of comfort”.

This paper describes the process of obtaining and using complex biostimulants for plant growth, based on enzyme-mediated and acid-mediated hydrolysates of animal raw materials. Animal blood at slaughter was enzymatically hydrolyzed with a substance that contains up to 35% of free amino acids. The effect of biostimulants on development of agricultural crops and forest plants grown from seed after long dormancy was studied. The changes in enzymatic activity of the system were assessed. The prominent positive effect of the biostimulants on the rate of seed germination and formation of green biomass was established.

The paper presents the results of experimental studies on the use of new synthesized reagent based on epichlorohydrin(chloropropylene oxide) and dimethylamine at the mechanical sludge dewatering unit; the effect of the residual flocculant content on sludge dewatering process is determined. In particular, it was found that the use of the proposed reagent led to increase in the efficiency of settling industrial effluents at the primary settling unit up to 95%; it had a beneficial effect on further wastewater treatment at biological treatment facilities, which led to 1.5-fold decrease in the consumption of flocculant. The use of this reagent made it possible to achieve a high degree of dewatering of sewage sludge and reduce the moisture content of the formed cake from 98 to 73%. Consequently, this allowedto significantlydecrease the volume of sludge further placed in sludge collectors and to reduce the amount of land allotted for its disposal.

This study deals with the evaluation of the stabilization of several samples of soft soil with some chemical and physical additives. The intention is to amend the weak properties of these soils summarized in low bearing capacity and high settlement. The used stabilizers are quicklime, class F fly ash activated by cement, rock powder, crushed waste concrete, and tire crumb rubber. The paper investigated the effects of these stabilizers by unconfined compression test that considers very effective geotechnical test for measuring the ability of soils to bear structures constructed on them especially when used additives. This test was carried out on three samples of soils. They were classified by (UCSC) as (CL) soft soils. They were also classified by (AASHTO) as (A-7-6), (A-6), and (A-6) are rated as fair to poor subgrades in (AASHTO). The results of (UCS) test for each of the five additives used were compared according to the responding of each soil samples used. The (UCS) test was conducted in this study on sixty samples of soils before and after treatment and under the basics of the Proctor compaction test at optimum moisture content and maximum dry density. The results showed that the rock powder was the most suitable stabilizer that gave best results of improvement reached to 900% at 25% percent by dry weight of soil, crushed waste concrete came after it that gave treatment 683% at 15%, class F fly ash activated by cement followed the two formers which increased strength 533% at 15%, quicklime after that in an amendment 517% at 9% and finally tire crumb rubber that stabilized the soil 500% at 4%. In the literature, these materials founded to be very efficient in the stabilization of soils in their physical and chemical properties like increasing bearing capacity and reducing settlement of soil.

As its large quantity, complex structure and composition, crop straw needs a variety of enzymes for synergistic action in the process of resourcable utilization. Various enzymes produced by Aspergillus Niger, such as cellulase, hemicellulase, lignin enzyme and pectinase, can degrade straw components and play an important role in straw resource recovery. In this paper, the advantages of Aspergillus Niger in straw degradation were reviewed, the research progress of enzymes produced by Aspergillus Niger using straw was introduced, and the further research direction of Aspergillus Niger was also prospected.

The paper considers the main methods of processing oily mill scale and oily sludge for iron and steel production. At present, the issue of processing such waste is highly relevant for iron and steel works. The iron content allows regards them as a valuable technogenic raw material. But direct processing is complicated by the high oil content. The authors describe thermal processing variants with and without regeneration of oil products, physicochemical methods and briquetting. A desludging method with the help of Rotor Impulse Machines (RIM) is described in sufficient detail; its main advantages are presented. A very promising direction in the development of new technologies for the processing of oily sludge is the combination of physicochemical, mechanical, magnetic and other methods of desludging with the regeneration of oils.
