BACKGROUND: The International Council of Nurses (ICN) has elaborated an international terminology for nursing practice [International Classification of Nursing Practice (ICNP)] that can be useful to catalogue the problems of a nursing nature in diagnosis and also find a system for the classification of nursing activities. ICNP is also the reason why the Italian association Consociazione, representing Italian Nurses at ICN, through the School of Advanced Nursing of the University 'La Sapienza' of Rome, has set up a working group for the translation and experimentation of the ICNP version Beta 2. CONTENT: In this article the ICNP beta translation and validation into Italian is considered with some scenarios of how benefit could be derived by its utilization for nursing's visibility. The visibility of nursing care can be measured not only through patient outcomes but also by studying the existing data of patient care documentation. To have a common language and terminology in nursing is important for a universal understanding. RESULTS: Some philosophical reasoning on the genesis and development of ICNP is discussed along with arguments for and against nursing classification systems. AIM: To describe both the initial and the subsequent impact of the 2001 Global Nursing Partnerships Conference: 'Strategies for a Sustainable Workforce', the first ever forum of its type, on the key challenges facing the global nursing community. DESIGN: Identification of short- and long-term outcomes through descriptive review of immediate post-conference evaluations and follow-up questionnaires sent out 13 months later to nursing leaders in the participating countries. METHODS: Content analysis of quantitative data from 61 immediate post-conference evaluations and 13 follow-up questionnaires, as well as qualitative data from participant comments on the evaluation forms and questionnaires. FINDINGS: Analysis indicated conference participants viewed the conference as a beneficial forum to collaboratively examine nursing workforce issues and trends, develop country-specific nursing action plans, establish and strengthen national and international partnerships, and build stronger international nursing bodies. CONCLUSION: The Global Nursing Partnerships Conference was an international success--addressing the unique challenges facing nursing leaders in developed and developing countries and the needs of nurses throughout the world. Abstract This article presents questions, reflections and proposed resolutions regarding the Judgement Axis of the International Classification of Nursing Practice®, Beta Version (ICNP®β). The Judgement Axis, in its present format, consists of an alphabetical listing of terms that are meant to reflect the clinical opinion of a nurse relating to the state of a nursing phenomenon appearing in Axis A of the ICNP®β. A review of literature indicates that judgement can be more extensive. Not considered in the development of the Axis is the fact that judgement can be clinical and actuarial. Actuarial judgement is predictive and based on statistics. Clinical judgement is patient-centred, creative and intuitive. Both are essential in defining nursing judgement. The list presents 49 modifiers in nominal form. Each of these is subordinated, in alphanumeric descending order, by qualifiers that do not conform to the concept of lexical hierarchy. We propose that the 49 terms which appear in the present listing as unique ordinates should be clustered into major categories with synonyms listed as subordinates of the major cluster headings. The qualifiers of degree, which are presently identified as subordinates in Axis B, might be presented in matrix format, providing a scale of degree of the modifier for the nurse.
