The study examines the relationship between virtual reality (VR)‐facilitated mental imagery and travellers' intention to visit a destination. A serial mediation process through travel inspiration (inspired‐by and inspired‐to) is proposed as a psychological mechanism able to explain the positive relationship of elaboration and quality of mental imagery with visit intentions. VR users were recruited through Prolific Academic. The findings demonstrate that VR‐facilitated elaboration of mental imagery increases travel inspiration and consequently visit intention. However, the importance of mental imagery quality is much lower. The paper contributes to the literature of pre‐travel VR experience by exploring the role of travel inspiration. Drawn upon Telepresence theory, this study aims to identify the relationships between existential authenticity, celebrity attachment, telepresence, and travel intention in the short video experience. Survey results show that existential authenticity fosters user attachment to celebrity and then travel intention, but has no impact on telepresence which is also not related to travel intention; Furthermore, celebrity attachment enhances travel intention. Although existential authenticity has no effect on telepresence, celebrity attachment mediates the relationship between existential authenticity and telepresence. The notion that tourists actively co-create value with organisations is increasingly acknowledged in tourism marketing. Yet, not much is known about the processes in play when customers co-create value with each other. This conceptual paper offers a theoretical basis for the study of customer-to-customer co-creation in tourism contexts, while debating the epistemological assumptions of value-related research in tourism. ABSTRACT Experiences constitute the essence of the tourism industry. While the literature has recognized the recent impact of technology on experiences, its empirical exploration remains scarce. This study addresses the gap by empirically exploring five leading industry cases to generate a holistic understanding of technology-enhanced tourism experiences. The main contribution of this paper lies in the development of a nine-field experience typology matrix based on the increasing intensity of co-creation and technology implementation. The final contribution of this study is the development of an experience hierarchy and discussing its relevance for experience enhancement in tourism research and practice. ABSTRACT The present study aims to outline the growing importance of culture in the field of tourism. More specifically, it highlights culture as a moderating variable in pre-visit tourist destination image formation, through the information sources utilized by the tourist in the selection of a holiday destination (that is, travel agencies alone vs. travel agencies together with the Internet). For this purpose primary research used a multicultural sample of 371 tourists from different European countries. The results show that the formation of a destination's pre-visit image amongst tourists, based on the information sources they use, is moderated by the level of uncertainty-avoidance of their national cultures. This article focuses on the Third International Conference on Tourism and Hotel Industry in Indo-China and Southeast Asia held in Phuket, Thailand from June 4 to 6, 1998. The basis of the conference was to build on the foundations of the first two Indo-China and Southeast Asia conferences, which were held in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. The main theme of the conference was to discuss the issues on current development, marketing and sustainability of the tourism and hotel industry in Indo-China and Southeast Asia countries. The conference was comprised of six concurrent sessions and two general sessions covering a wide range of topics, including marketing, ecotourism, recreational tourism, cultural tourism, service quality, shopping tourism, distance learning, human resources management, casino gaming industry and tourism policy. The format included industrial case studies, conceptual framework proposals, and educational training issues. Through the discussions, a series of concrete recommendations were made on the tourism and hotel industry in the region. In terms of conference organization, the Faculty of Tourism and Hotel Management, Prince of Songkla University did an excellent job in providing pre- and post-conference tours for those interested participants. Overall, the conference received high appreciation and was fruitful in bringing together such an extensive pool of divergently talented researchers in the tourism and hotel Industry.

This article discusses the European Congress on hospitality and tourism education jointly organised by the European Council for Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Education, the International Association of Hotel Management Schools and the Hospitality Sales and Marketing Association International, held at Maastricht, The Netherlands from October 26-28, 2000. The conference aimed to bring together all relevant stakeholders to discuss a wide portfolio of issues related to the hospitality and tourism education. The majority of papers focused on the imperatives of the continual dynamically changing environment on hospitality curriculum development, delivery and design. Overall, 18 refereed papers thematically divided into eight tracks were presented during eight concurrent sessions: (i) the learning of knowledge acquisition, (ii) developing student-oriented learning strategies, (iii) integrated approaches of hospitality and tourism education, (iv) quality management in hospitality education, (v) distance learning and online learning, (vi) vie on leadership skills, (vii) innovations in the tourism and hospitality curriculum and (viii) training on multimedia technology skills.

This article provides information on the Tenth Council for Australian University Tourism and Hospitality Education (CAUTHE) Australian National Tourism and Hospitality Research Conference from February 2-5, 2000. The intention of the conference was to create a collegial atmosphere with delegates committed to a single site. The conference was well attended and appeared to be well received by delegates, enhanced by the sunny and mild weather conditions. A strong sense of camaraderie emerged, under the able leadership of Susan Murphy. The CAUTHE conferences are focused on an academic agenda of disseminating research results and debating the state of hospitality and tourism education, particularly at university level. The conference organizers sought to stimulate an engagement with industry and government as well as with academics. A variety of formal and semi-formal meetings and networking sessions were held during the conference. The major source of tourism-specific research funding in Australia is the Cooperative Research Centre for Sustainable Tourism. There was also a meeting of the grouping Academic Women in Tourism, Hospitality and Leisure, prompting claims of exclusion by a group of men.

This article discusses the fifth annual pan-European conference on hotel technology of the International Hotel and Restaurant, held in Lausanne, Switzerland from February 16-18, 2000. The conference featured three keynote speakers: (1) Jim Sappington, Assistant Vice President of Information Services at McDonald's Corp., spoke of the challenges of providing global IT solutions and provided some practical considerations and project management guidelines based on his experiences at McDonald's, (2) Arthur Esch, a futurist who studies emerging technologies and their impacts, discussed some leading trends taking place as a result of the digital convergence and the importance of electronic commerce and relationship marketing and (3) Scott Heintzeman, Vice President of Knowledge Technologies for Carlson Hospitality, emphasized the importance of marketing with IT, the need for customer-centric solutions and distribution channel management. The resounding theme throughout the week of workshops and educational sessions was that IT is the single greatest force driving change and complexity in the industry.

This article focuses on the World Conference on the Measurement of the Economic Impact of Tourism held in Nice, France from June 15 to 18, 1999. There were 25 ministers of tourism and representatives of 12 international economic and finance agencies, such as the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the International finance Organization, the United Nations and the European Commission. The program boated 81 presentations by 70 speakers, not counting 11 moderators and presiding officer. Most of the business was conducted in plenary sessions, although there were two sets of two concurrent sessions each on certain technical issues. A number of issue were discussed in formal presentations or arose from concerns expressed by delegates. The OECD also released its Draft OECD Guidelines for a Tourism Satellite Account, a conceptual framework similar to that of the World Trade Organization (WTO) but not identical. The World Travel and Tourism Council contracts with individual countries to produce simulated Tourism Satellite Accounts (TSA). The Laudable reduction in visitor arrival formalities in many countries has one troublesome effect, it reduces the quality of data on visitor arrivals and opportunities for sampling visitor expenditures. In many less developed nations, a considerable amount of productive activity is informal, that is produced by individuals where the boundary between production for market and for personal consumption is blurred. The current WTO TSA conceptual framework could be expanded to permit regional TSA, more detail on tourism employment, the indirect and other secondary impacts of visitor spending and measurement of gross fixed capital formation in response to tourism activity.

This article focuses on the annual international conference organized by the International Center of Studies on the Tourist Economy of the University of Venice (CISET) titled From Destination to Destination Marketing and Management: Designing and Repositioning Tourism Products held in Venice, Italy from March 15 to 16, 1999. About two hundred academics and professionals from Italy and abroad attended the venue. Sixteen Italian and international speakers with proven expertise in destination marketing and management, communication strategies and positioning, planning and organization as well as destination management system design, presented theoretical and practical evidence of the new challenges tourism destinations are facing. At a time of growing international competition, destination marketing and destination management represent key strategies for both mature and emerging destinations, in order to satisfy an ever-demanding consumer, ensure sustainable development and then gain, hold or win back a strong position in the global tourism market. However, in spite of the popularity that these concepts and tools are currently enjoying in academic circles, their diffusion, understanding and use among tourist operators is still low if compared with the benefits they can bring to teach business and to the destination as a whole.

This article presents the highlights of the Annual Association Internationale d'Experts Scientifique du Tourisme Congress in Slovenia in September 1999. The congress was entitled Future-Oriented Tourism Policy: A Contribution to the Strategic Development of Places. Sergio Molina and Augusto Martinez listed the economic impacts of tourism development in Mexico. As the economic impact of tourism is difficult to evaluate, the tourism policy encouraged the implementation of the Tourism Satellite Accounts, a methodological approach that is seen as an important tool for evaluating the importance of tourism for national economies. The presentation by David Airey and Richard Butler addressed tourism as a policy framework at a regional level. They pointed out that although the regional dimension has been an important element of tourism, the regional level is not one that relates well to either demand or supply of tourist services. In conclusion, although the congress was well prepared and many questions were predefined, there was little discussion on the tourism policy statements. Tourism policy should direct part of the commercial tourism earnings towards environmental protection. The public goods problem will have to be given much more attention in the future tourism policies.

This article an overview of urban tourism. It is somewhat ironic that although people have been travelling to, and visiting cities from time immemorial, it has only been in the last decade or so that anyone really seems to have taken any notice of this in tourism writing and research. This general lack of urban tourism research is perhaps best evidenced by the plethora of somewhat repetitive general texts on tourism in the past 10-15 years. Although it is true that many tourism books have made reference to cities as visitor destinations, this has rarely moved beyond case-study description of trends and activity. In terms of sole authors, one of the first, and most wide ranging text in terms of its discussion of the urban tourism phenomena is Chris Law's book Urban Tourism: Attracting Visitors to Large Cities. Another book with a similar title is Stephen Page's book Urban Tourism. In terms of multi-authored books, two that would seem to stand out as worth a read based simply on their titles alone include: International City Tourism: Analysis and Strategy and The Tourist City. A Couple of other multi-authored texts worth considering include: Urban Tourism: Performance and Strategies in Eight European Cities and Tourism in Major Cities. The books mentioned here are not the only texts on urban tourism currently available, however, many others not reviewed tend to take a specific theme such as tourism in historic cities, or focus on one particular aspect of the tourism phenomena such as marketing or promotion.

This article presents an overview of the 1997 Conference of the International Society of Travel and Tourism Educators (ISTTE) held from October 23-26 in San Diego, California in cooperation with the Education Forum of the American Society of Travel Agents (ASTA). The annual event drew more than 150 travel and tourism educators and industry professionals from Australia, Canada, Korea, Japan, New Zealand, Great Britain and the U.S. The backdrop of the conference was the phenomenal and continued growth of the Pacific Rim region. The conference theme of the Pacific Rim was echoed in several workshops and research presentations. Workshop sessions included a how-to approach to enhance students' knowledge and cultural awareness about Asian travel and to prepare them with skills to assist travels to Asia, and a survey report on the future skill requirements in the retail travel industry. A research paper presented by researchers from Hawaii Pacific University and Cleveland State University investigated the relationship between Japanese tourists' travel-attribute quality and trip satisfaction. Reflecting the mission of ISTTE, the conference also devoted a number of workshop sessions and research presentations to travel and tourism education. A poster session on a variety of subjects was also made available. The 1997 Annual Conference of ISTTE was presided over by Kaye Chon, president of ISTTE.

This section features tenth annual Las Vegas Tourism Security and Safety Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada, in 2002. As is the conference's tradition, all sessions are held as plenary session with a daily summary given by Peter Tarlow. The theme was protecting the international market and as such a great deal of emphasis was placed on involving speakers from different nations. The motivation for this theme was the 2002 Olympic Games to be held in Salt Lake City, Utah. Delegates came from North America and Asia. As is the conference's tradition all speaker are active practitioners in the field of tourism security. In honor of the tenth anniversary and the international character of the conference, the conference began with a color guard, followed by words of welcome from Clark County Sheriff Jerry Keller, Keller is the chief law enforcement officer for the host city of Las Vegas and heads the city's Metro Police Department. Tarlow summarized the 2001 conference by reminding delegates that their job is to think creatively, to go beyond petty bureaucratic arguments and to seek ways in which each person can travel in safety and security. The conference emphasized the notion that good security is good business and as the world becomes ever more intertwined, the roles of security professional and goodwill ambassador will continue to merge.

This article presents information on the international convention and exposition of the International Council for Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Education which was held at New Orleans Hyatt Hotel in Louisiana on July 18-22, 2000. The general theme was New Beginnings and although the majority of the delegates were affiliated with universities, an important number of industry practitioners and tourism policy makers were also represented. The conference aimed to bring together all relevant stakeholders to discuss a wide portfolio of issues related to the hopsitality and tourism industry and education. Information Technology and specifically Web-based applications were the major focus of the majority of the presentations. Papers on Web page design and functionality, on e-commerce applications management and evaluation attracted the attention of the conference attendants. The impact of Internet on education was the next major theme of the conference. Participants had the opportunity to learn how to best harness technology for distance/online education or training purposes as well as obtain a first hand insight on how educational institutions are changing and adopting their educational methods and curriculum to address current challenges.

This article focuses on the annual conference hosted by the European Association of Tourism and Leisure Education in Munich, Germany on September 9-11, 1999. The three days of the conference saw an interesting mix of presentations, including keynote speeches from Touristik Union International and Lufthansa representatives. On the academic side Professor Crompton, a leading figure in tourism services marketing research, set the tone of the conference with a keynote speech reviewing the evolution of services marketing concepts over the last two decades and their relative and mutual contribution with the leisure and tourism theories. The conference was organised in a series of three parallel workshops along various themes such as cultural issues, delivering, managing and measuring service quality, tools for service quality and service quality in education, however, the relevance of some of the talks to the general aim of the conference was not always respected. On the social side, the conference included a reception by the Bavarian Government in the formal royal city Palace and a conference dinner in a typical Germanic establishment. The majority of the delegates were from western Europe but delegates from various eastern European countries were also present.

This article provides information on the eight annual Las Vegas Tourism Security and Safety Conference, held in Las Vegas, Nevada, from May 17 to 19, 1999. Scholars, scholar-practitioners, academics and tourism security practitioners met in Las Vegas for the conference. Unlike a pure academic conference, this conference brings together delegates from both the private and the public sectors, academics and security professionals. As in past years, attendees came from both around the U.S. and from as far away as Guam. The conference's growing importance was further underlined by the fact that its keynote speakers this year were Howard Safir, New York City's police commissioner, and Governor William Janklow of South Dakota. The 1999 conference's theme, Tourism Safety and Security: A Perfect Fit Into the Year 2000!, addresses not only the issues facing tourism but, in a world of greater travel, how tourism officials will deal with possible problems presented by Y2K. Among the themes touched upon this year were be prepared, security is not magic; it is hard work, the need to cooperate, develop good staffing, and imperativeness of responsibility, among others. Peter Tarlow ended the three days of intensive lectures by reminding the delegates that all speakers emphasized at least three points in common. These being: the need to think through a problem and to recognize that all tourism safety decisions are in essence business decisions; tourism safety events rarely occur by chance; and decisions are based on the quality of the analysis.

The article focuses on the Sport in City conference held in Sheffield, Great Britain, July 2-4, 1998, which examined the development and planning of sport in cities in order to attract inward investment and tourism and to meet the social needs of the inhabitants. Workshop sessions during the three days covered the themes such as the economic impact of sports events, sport and urban regeneration, cities of sport and urban strategies, the political economy of the city, bidding and planning for sport events, sport and the community and urban sports tourism. A number of presentations also examined the influence of politics and global capital on the planning of major developments. Other contributors emphasized the need for strategic planning around major urban sporting events, particularly those attracting many tourists.
