Within the educational context of identifying the critical ingredients of an effective speech-language pathologist, this paper highlights the centrality of theory in underpinning every level of our practice. A spotlight is placed on us knowing how language and communication work, what makes our interventions work, how we can make the most difference through our choices in therapy, and what makes both us and our clients respond. So, what are the critical ingredients of an effective speech-language pathologist, of an effective therapy, of an effective therapeutic alliance, and why is this so important? While there are many foundational and guiding habits upon which new graduates, early career, and experienced clinicians shape their practice, no one habit is regarded as more important than us exploring the theoretical underpinnings of what we are doing and why. To underscore the role of theory in our everyday practice, a discourse level intervention for people with aphasia is used as an exemplar to track the complex contribution of different theories to a single intervention. Discourse level interventions are relatively new on the scene in the area of acquired language disorders. Child language interventions, on the other hand, have frequently revolved around the story, aiming to bridge the oral-literate divide through the development of narrative structure. This paper will aim to weave its own story around discourse level interventions, combining the narrative genre with the everyday genres used by adults in conversation. I will highlight how this approach taps into lexical theories, sentence processing theories, discourse organisation, and the cognitive underpinnings of language, and closely examine how this multilayering of language in context may hold some of the answers to questions around generalisation, impact, and making the greatest difference to individuals. Communication partner training is a recommended intervention for partners of people with acquired brain injury. In this paper we explore the past, present, and future of communication partner training (CPT) based on our 2023 Speech Pathology Australia national conference address. We focus on our research team's contributions, and highlight research knowledge across stroke, traumatic brain injury (TBI), and dementia. This work is anchored in the voice of people with communication disability. One partner in the CPT journey, Rosey Morrow, co-authors this paper. The CPT evidence base for acquired neurological conditions is growing, including in the areas of technology, co-design, and translation. However, knowledge and implementation gaps remain. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development identifies the need for inclusive societies and justice for people who experience, or are at risk of experiencing, modern slavery. The primary objective of this commentary paper is to consider current research and practice in relation to the protection of people with communication disability from modern slavery. The paper considers the role of SLPs in developing and disseminating accessible information to help achieve decent work and economic growth (SDG 8) and peace, justice, and strong institutions (SDG 16). This paper considers five areas for protecting people with communication disability from modern slavery: (1) accessible information, (2) advocacy, (3) rights-based approaches, (4) improved understanding about access to services, and (5) education. Practice examples are discussed across each of these areas, with a focus on accessible information. This commentary asserts that information about modern slavery must be accessible so that people with communication disability experience inclusion, safety, and justice. SLPs are well placed to implement communication strategies, such as accessible information, to help protect people with communication disability from modern slavery. Current speech-language pathology (SLP) services in Cambodia are limited in scope, service accessibility and integration into government systems. However, momentum is growing to develop an internationally recognised profession. This paper examines the depth and breadth of SLP support available to people with communication and/or swallowing difficulties in relation the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Qualitative interview data collected from service facilities (n = 13) and speech therapy practitioners (n = 27) were mapped and analysed for accessibility and scope of SLP services. Data revealed a workforce density of 0.16:100 000. Disparity in service accessibility was identified between provincial and urban locations, adult and paediatric populations and range of practice areas. The findings demonstrate the importance of partnerships (SDG 17) among government departments, non-government organisations and private sector entities to establish a sustainable and culturally responsive SLP profession in Cambodia. Although there is no Cambodian university training program, there is a growing momentum and local commitment to establishing a workforce to support Cambodians with communication and/or swallowing difficulties. Colonisation and continuing discrimination have significantly and negatively impacted the physical, social and emotional wellbeing of First Nations peoples globally. In Australia, Aboriginal cultures thrive despite ongoing barriers to health care. This paper describes challenges and new initiatives for Australian Aboriginal people with acquired communication disability after brain injury and their alignment with the global aims forming the Sustainable Development Goals. Research undertaken by an Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal multidisciplinary team over a decade in Western Australia identified and responded to mismatches between community needs and services. Initiatives described include the Missing Voices, Healing Right Way, Brain Injury Yarning Circles and Wangi/Yarning Together projects. Recommendations implemented related to (a) greater incorporation of Aboriginal cultural protocols and values within services, (b) more culturally secure assessment and treatment tools, (c) support after hospital discharge, (d) Aboriginal health worker involvement in support. Implementation includes cultural training of hospital staff, trialling new assessment and treatment methods, and establishing community-based Aboriginal Brain Injury Coordinator positions and relevant peer support groups. Culturally secure brain injury rehabilitation in Australia is in its infancy. Our initiatives challenge assumptions about worldviews and established Western biomedical models of healthcare through incorporating Indigenous methodologies and leadership, and community-driven service delivery. This paper contextualises a keynote address delivered at the 2022 Speech Pathology Australia National Conference in Melbourne, Australia. The paper aligns with the conference theme of Beyond Borders from the perspective of moving beyond borders of regular practice to develop strong partnerships and networks within our communities to advocate and support necessary change. Change or enhancement to current practice is necessary if we are to reduce current inequities in education experienced by many children in our communities, including those with communication challenges. Strengths-based and culturally responsive literacy approaches to supporting children within the context of their family and community are increasingly gaining support as we address this challenge. The Better Start Literacy Approach (Te Ara Reo Matatini), currently being implemented in junior school classrooms across New Zealand is described. It is one example of large-scale implementation of a strengths-based and culturally responsive early literacy approach, based on the science of reading. Data support the effectiveness of the Better Start Literacy Approach in significantly enhancing the foundational literacy skills of 5- and 6-year-old children, including those who commence school with lower levels of oral language ability. Through establishing strong partnerships within communities, speech pathologists have much to offer in motivating systems level change to enhance early literacy success for all learners. Communication is central to the accomplishment of each of the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and is a fundamental human right. This special issue of the International Journal of Speech-Language Pathology (IJSLP, vol. 25, no. 1) is dedicated to communication, swallowing and the SDGs; particularly focussing on people with communication and/or swallowing disability and those who support them. The papers in the special issue of IJSLP demonstrate that successful communication is necessary for realisation of all 17 SDGs at both a global and an individual level and advance the international call for SDG 18: Communication for All. The 36 papers address all 17 goals, focussing on poverty, hunger, health, education, work, innovation, climate, cities, land, oceans, justice, and partnerships. Authors worked and undertook their research in Australia, Austria, Benin, Cambodia, Cameroon, Canada, China, Columbia, Denmark, Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, Greece, Iceland, India, Iraq, Ireland, Italy, Jordan, Kenya, Lebanon, Maldives, Mozambique, Nepal, New Zealand, Nigeria, State of Palestine, Peru, Philippines, Rwanda, Serbia, South Africa, Uganda, UK, USA, Vietnam. Communication for all is essential for the achievement of the SDGs, "peace and prosperity for people and the planet" (United Nations, 2015a). Speech-language pathology graduates are not only expected to be proficient in their area of expertise but to have developed skills that contribute to society as a whole. The purpose of this paper is to illuminate the relationship between the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in particular, good health and well-being (SDG 3), quality education (SDG 4), reduced inequalities (SDG 10), sustainable cities and communities (SDG 11), and partnerships for the goals (SDG 17) through the involvement of experts-by-experience in the classroom on a pre-registration speech-language pathology course. An innovative approach to student-centred learning involved Tom, a person with autism, his family, and his speech-language pathologist (SLP). This commentary is co-written with Tom's mother and advocate, his SLP, and a university educator. Tom's mother's writing was not changed in anyway as agreed in the writing contract. Co-teaching with experts-by-experience (a parent, and a person with a communication disability) has the potential to strengthen the bonds between communities and universities. Involvement by experts-by-experience promotes equality in teaching and sees the person and the ability behind the disability. SLPs and university educators must collaborate to make this a reality. Participation in society is the cornerstone to living a meaningful, connected, and healthy life. Persons with complex communication needs, however, often have restricted opportunities to participate in everyday contexts and situations. Reasons for this include societal attitudinal barriers, as well as limited knowledge and skills about augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) to enhance participation. Enhancing participation of persons with complex communication needs requires a holistic and multi-faceted approach. The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with their disability-inclusive agenda provide an impetus for shaping the approach of the Centre for Augmentative and Alternative Communication (CAAC) in enhancing participation of persons with complex communication needs in South Africa. This paper aims to provide a reflective description and application of the work conducted by the CAAC in addressing the SDGs in South Africa. Research and training conducted by the CAAC is shown to be aligned to five SDGs, namely zero hunger (SDG 2), good health and well-being (SDG 3), quality education (SDG 4), decent work and economic growth (SDG 8) and peace, justice, and strong institutions (SDG 16), with a focus on reaching these goals in order to benefit persons with complex communication needs. The paper demonstrates that, despite some gains in addressing the SDGs, research and clinical practice still needs to be on these and the remaining SDGs. The United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals and the UNICEF/WHO Nurturing Care Framework for supporting children's health and development present unique international opportunities for speech-language pathologists to contribute support to early childhood development and Sustainable Development Goals (especially SDG 4 and SDG 17) in diverse international contexts. The crucial role that parent/caregiver support plays in promoting Nurturing Care and sustainable education is often underappreciated, so the objective of this paper is to describe key concepts and importance of parent/caregiver support in the Nurturing Care Framework and the SDGs. This commentary focusses on SDG 4, which is foundational to individuals, communities and societies in creating an education framework that includes and harnesses family and community support. This paper also includes as an example a comprehensive program that has been developed and implemented in the People's Republic of China that includes speech and language skills as an explicit component. The results in China indicate that a program of universal developmental facilitators can be implemented within an educational and paediatrician/developmental paediatrician centred health care context. Sustainable Development Goal 4 and UNICEF/WHO Nurturing Care Framework are important and innovative programs that explicitly harness parent education and training to identify and address the needs of children with developmental difficulties utilising paediatricians, speech language pathologists, allied health personnel, teachers, and community stakeholders proactively for implementation. This paper describes a collaborative project between Trinity College Dublin in Ireland and the United Nations' World Food Programme (WFP) Mozambique country office. The Sphere standards require that information on humanitarian assistance should be in languages and formats accessible to people who cannot read or who have communication difficulties. Nevertheless, there remains a gap in both implementing this guidance consistently and in understanding the impact of doing so when engaging with affected populations. This commentary describes the process of developing key messages regarding targeting of humanitarian food assistance in communication-accessible formats, and field testing of these materials with community committees and partners The communication-accessible materials were well received by communities, and humanitarian staff and partners found them to be useful in community engagement. Materials designed to be maximally accessible to people with communication differences and disabilities may also address inclusion for affected populations with different education, literacy, and language backgrounds. More than 700 million people globally are still living in extreme poverty. No poverty (Sustainable Development Goal 1, SDG 1), is considered to be the greatest global challenge. This paper aims to outline the effects of poverty on communication and swallowing disabilities across the lifespan and steps to take for its amelioration. Poverty and disability are in a vicious cycle with each being a cause for and a consequence of the other. Poverty has incontrovertible and significant ramifications for communication and swallowing disabilities across the lifetime from pregnancy to old age. The individual, family and social burden and costs of these disabilities have lifelong economic and social consequences. Considering poverty is a known and important determinant of communication and swallowing disabilities, the most potent weapon is to focus on preventing and ameliorating poverty-related communication and swallowing disabilities in children. A call to action is issued to speech-language pathologists to take steps towards this goal. This commentary describes the development of global partnerships, capacity-building, and the basis for the creation of a website (Leadersproject.org) used throughout the world that contains free educational resources for the assessment and treatment of people with communication disabilities (PWCD). This website contains speech-language assessment and treatment materials, online skill-building courses, over 200 instructional videos, train-the-trainer course materials, and syntheses of important research and trainings in over 30 languages. This commentary relates the work from leadersproject.org to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Through this website, the authors have established ongoing global partnerships with other health and education professionals. Moreover, PWCD and their families have used the website for information and support throughout the world. Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) and other health and education professionals use these materials to host capacity-building trainings and to support the development of knowledge and skills to local professionals for the benefit of PWCD. The Leadersproject.org resources have been influential and impactful as measured by approximately 24 000 visits from over 130 countries throughout the world. The authors of this paper continue to establish partnerships worldwide to spread education and increase the quality of care provided to PWCD. This paper relates to the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Life Below Water (SDG 14) and the need to consider Better Health and Well-Being (SDG 3) in interventions designed to reduce plastic straw waste. The aim of this paper is to explore the competing demands of saving the world's oceans and sea life from plastic straw waste, and simultaneously meeting the health and social needs of people with swallowing or physical disability who use plastic straws for drinking. In order to meet both SDG 14 and not compromise SDG 3 there is a need for collaborative and interdisciplinary, person-centred, inclusive innovation approaches to finding suitable and acceptable alternatives to plastic straws. Many people with swallowing disability will need a durable, flexible, and single-use straw that is resilient enough to withstand jaw closure without breaking. Co-design considerations include the alternative straw being (a) soft and flexible so as not to damage the teeth of people who bite to stabilise the jaw or who have a bite reflex; (b) suitable for both hot and cold drinks; (c) flexible for angling to the mouth; (d) readily, thoroughly and easily cleaned to a high standard of hygiene; (e) widely available for low or no cost wherever drinks are served; and (f) safe for people to use while reducing impact on the environment and being sustainable. Plastic straws are an assistive technology critical for the social inclusion of people with disability. In an inclusive society, reaching a policy position on the provision of plastic straws must include seeking out and listening to the voices of people with sensory, intellectual, physical, or multiple disabilities who use plastic straws. Purpose: A laryngectomy impacts communication, swallowing and breathing. It is disfiguring and can disrupt quality of life, one's sense of identity, and relationships. It can increase dependence on others, trigger social stigma, avoidant coping and suicidal risk. Qualitative research has the potential to enable greater understanding of these consequences. However, almost nothing has been written about the specific ethical issues that can arise when carrying out research with people with laryngectomy (PWL). This paper builds on the experiences of the authors in the field and seeks to examine and explain these research ethics considerations and how they impact research design, data collection, data analysis and dissemination. Method: Using a framework based on the values underpinning the Australian National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research, respect, merit and integrity, justice and beneficence, we have highlighted key issues relevant to this particular population. Main contribution: Different practical approaches are provided to address the ethical concerns that arise when conducting research with PWL. These include access to participants and ensuring diverse representation; balancing harm and benefit; achieving accurate interpretation, analysis and representation of the data generated through the research; research as a partnership that is respectful, empowering and fosters collaboration. Purpose: Legacies of colonialism continue to influence the profession of speech-language pathology (SLP) around the world. While there is some literature on ways in which we can decolonise the profession, there is little written on these issues in relation to research and practice in the field. In this paper, we discuss how qualitative approaches can be useful particularly in post-colonial contexts to transform research and practice in the profession. Method: Using a reflective framework, we draw on examples from several of our own research and teaching experiences that have embraced a variety of qualitative approaches, conducted across various contexts in the post-colonial South African context. Result: Qualitative approaches can play a central role in achieving transformation goals because they offer opportunities for highlighting the voices of marginalised communities and they are flexible and adaptable to the needs of particular contexts. We reflect on how qualitative approaches can be linked to SLP curricula, practice and research, and consider innovative ways in which such approaches can be embraced within the profession. Specifically focussing on research, we explore issues of access, representation and inclusion, the use of contextually relevant methods, and ethical considerations when working in post-colonial contexts. Conclusion: Many of the points raised in this article are important for all contexts. While Ethiopia’s health care system includes primary health centres, general, and specialised hospitals, allied health care like speech-language pathology was not available until 2003. This article was written with the aim of sharing the experience of establishing speech-language pathology as a profession and the first speech-language pathology training program in Ethiopia.In this paper, we retrospectively examine how the leadership of local stakeholders, a multidisciplinary team, and the development of a professional infrastructure led to the success of the program. The authorship group, who were involved in the program from inception to implementation, share their experiences.The speech-language pathology undergraduate program at Addis Ababa University graduated its first class in 2019. Plans to grow the training program at the graduate level are ongoing.This novel program, grown from several international partnerships, is an example of how low- and middle-income countries can improve access to the service providers necessary to treat their populations. AbstractPurposeMethodResultConclusionUrdu is the lingua franca and national language of Pakistan, and is the 10th most-spoken language worldwide with over 230 million speakers. The Urdu phonological system has been examined over the past decades. However, the system has been evolving. This paper aimed to review the available studies investigating various aspects of the Urdu phonological system and to reveal the variations noted among these studies.Twenty-one studies examining the phonological system of Urdu were located. The studies were reviewed in terms of consonants, geminates, consonant clusters, vowels, diphthongs, syllable structure, phonotactic constraints, and stress.The findings indicated that 38 consonants, 23 vowels, and 15 diphthongs are used in contemporary Urdu. Most consonants exist as geminates word medially. There are six syllable structures. The consonant clusters are constrained to the coda position only, and short vowels cannot exist in the word-final position. Like other syllable-timed languages, stress is not prominent in Urdu.Based on this review, a contemporary Urdu phonemic and syllable structure inventory has been proposed. The purpose of this review was to evaluate the factors that influence well-being, job satisfaction, stress, and burnout in speech-language pathologists (SLPs), and to identify the impact of these variables on worker recruitment and retention. A systematic literature search was conducted. Four electronic databases (PsycARTICLES & PsycINFO, PubMed/Medline, CINHAL and ABI/INFORM) were searched. The search was limited to articles published in English between 1998 and June 2018. To be eligible for inclusion, studies needed to investigate or report well-being, job satisfaction, stress or burnout in SLPs. The methodological quality of each paper was assessed using the "Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology" (for quantitative data) and "Consolidated criteria for Reporting Qualitative research" (for qualitative data) checklists. A data-driven thematic analysis of the literature was used to identify key themes. Seventeen of 2050 studies met the inclusion criteria, of which 15 were cross-sectional surveys yielding quantitative data. Two were qualitative studies. There was consistent evidence for SLPs in the USA and Canada experiencing average to high satisfaction in their jobs. However, SLP job satisfaction in the UK was low, and studies in other countries did not address satisfaction. Facet analysis revealed six contributory themes, three of which were clearly associated with well-being: workload/caseload size, professional support, and salary. The contribution of job control (autonomy), length of time in practice and work setting was inconclusive. Evidence for stress and dissatisfaction leading to workforce attrition was found. Job satisfaction, stress, and burnout were found to be associated with various occupational features, including elements of demand, support and reward. No previous studies have investigated the interaction between different elements of a job, which might boost satisfaction or ameliorate stress in SLPs. This is the first review using a systematic approach to focus on well-being, satisfaction, stress and burnout in SLPs and suggests more work needs to be done to help identify and improve the well-being of the workforce. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to systematically review the literature on resonant voice therapy and to evaluate the level of evidence on the effectiveness of using resonant voice therapy in treating dysphonia. Method: Refereed journal papers from 1974 to 2014 were retrieved and reviewed by two independent reviewers using the keywords "Humming, Resonance, Resonant Voice, Semi-occluded or closed tube phonation" using available database systems. Quality of evidence was evaluated by using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE). Result: Thirteen papers met the search criteria. Nine papers were selected by the two reviewers. Two of the papers were randomised-controlled studies and the other seven were observational studies. At least four types of resonant voice therapies were described. They included the Lessac-Madsen Resonant Voice Therapy, Y-Buzz, Resonance Therapy and Humming. The overall level of quality of evidence was graded as "moderate". Conclusion: There were limited studies that investigated the effectiveness of resonant voice therapy. Most studies were small-scale uncontrolled observational studies with the inclusion of only small samples or specific populations. There is clearly a need for more large-scale randomised controlled studies with a wider range of populations to provide further evidence on the effectiveness of resonant voice training for different populations. Following transoral robotic surgery (TORS) for oropharyngeal carcinoma (OPC), velopharyngeal incompetence (VPI) is a known consequence that may contribute to swallowing and speech disorders. As the incidence of OPC increases affecting a younger demographic, a better understanding of VPI is required to support speech and swallowing rehabilitation. A scoping review was conducted using Arskey & O'Malley's framework. Studies were identified from five databases between 2007 and 2020. The methodological quality was measured with the RevMan Risk of Bias Tool by two independent evaluators. A total of seven studies met the inclusion criterion. There was a combined total of 306 participants, their average age was 59.2 years. A high risk of bias and degree of heterogeneity across all seven cohort studies was observed. Validated and instrumental evaluations of VPI were present in two papers, with the majority only reporting the presence or absence of VPI. The incidence of VPI reported in each study ranged from 0 to 53%, (median 3.5%). There are few high-quality studies and considerable heterogeneity in the terminology, inclusion criteria and measurement of VPI. Instrumentation, to date, has been rarely used but is necessary for a normed and validated approach to VPI. Based on this review, there is considerable need for larger studies which instrumentally and longitudinally assess VPI as a consequence of TORS, in order to guide patient education and management prior to, and following their surgery. Purpose: Over 140 000 Australians live with aphasia after stroke, with this number of people living with aphasia increasing significantly when aphasia arising from traumatic brain injury, neoplasm, and infectious and progressive neurological diseases is also included. The resulting communication disability frequently compromises every aspect of daily life, significantly impacting everyday activity, employment, social participation, mental health, identity, and family functioning. Rehabilitation services rarely meet the needs of this group who have, for example, poorer healthcare outcomes than stroke peers without aphasia, nor address long-term recovery and support needs. Method: In this discussion paper, I argue that given the broad impacts of aphasia, a biopsychosocial approach to aphasia rehabilitation is required. Rehabilitation must include: interventions to improve the communication environment; programs that directly target identity, wellbeing, and mental health; and therapies focusing on functional activity, communication participation, and long-term self-management. Result: The evidence for these approaches is mounting and includes strongly stated consumer needs. I discuss the need for multidisciplinary involvement and argue that for speech-language pathologists to achieve such comprehensive service provision, an expanded scope of practice is required. Conclusion: There is a need to rethink standard therapy approaches, timeframes, and funding mechanisms. Purpose: Picture naming assessments are one of the most common methods of examining word retrieval in aphasia. However, currently, it is unclear whether these assessments are able to accurately predict word retrieval in "real-life" communication. This paper aims to explore the evidence in the current literature regarding the relationship between picture naming and word retrieval in connected speech in people with aphasia. Method: Literature was reviewed that examined the correlation between picture naming and word retrieval in connected speech. The literature search was limited to articles that were English language, participants with aphasia, and that were not therapy studies. Result: The existing studies showed mixed findings. However, comparison of study outcomes was complicated by inconsistency in the research methods used, including in word retrieval measures and connected speech elicitation. Conclusion: While there is some evidence of a relationship between picture naming and word retrieval in connected speech, correlation outcomes were mixed with possible influences from participant characteristics, assessment method and speech sample type. We therefore suggest that clinical decision-making would benefit from supplementing picture naming tests with an analysis of word retrieval in connected speech. This paper introduces a protocol-based approach, the Bilingual Multidimensional Ability Scale (B-MAS), for expert raters to identify DLD in bilinguals.Three bilingual speech-language pathologists (SLPs) reviewed 166 Spanish-English bilingual children’s profiles, which included performance on direct (morphosyntax, semantics, and narrative tasks) and indirect (parent/teacher survey) measures in both languages. A multidimensional scale (0–5) was adopted to rate children’s performance. A diagnosis of DLD was made if at least two raters assigned a summary rating of ≤2.Analysis of the scores on the B-MAS resulted in the identification of 21 children as having DLD. Though different strategies were employed to make decisions, the three SLPs demonstrated high inter-rater agreement across different ratings (intraclass correlation coefficient values ranged from .83 to .90).For bilingual populations that are understudied and for which gold standards of assessment are not available, the B-MAS can be adopted as a starting point to study DLD or as a reference standard to develop new assessment tools in that population. Natural disasters can significantly impact children's health, development, and wellbeing, as well as their access to education and support services (including speech-language pathology). Children's needs are often overlooked in the urgent aftermath of natural disasters. This is especially true for children with communication difficulties. This commentary explores the impacts of bushfire on Australian children, to propose a sustainable, community-based approach to supporting children's health, wellbeing, and communication. The Royal Far West Bushfire Recovery Program, a multidisciplinary allied health program, supported children's recovery, resilience, and development in the aftermath of Australia's Black Summer bushfires in 2019–2020. Children learnt coping strategies and were more able to communicate with adults and peers about their feelings and experiences, but residual impacts of bushfires remained for some children. Allied health telepractice services, including speech-language pathology, enhanced access for vulnerable children, highlighting the potential for technology to provide high-quality services to support recovery, particularly in remote areas. Climate change increases the frequency and severity of bushfires and other natural disasters with significant consequences for vulnerable and at-risk communities. Children with communication needs are particularly vulnerable during and following these disasters. High quality, evidence-based interventions are needed to support the health, wellbeing, and communication needs of children, with opportunities for involvement of speech-language pathologists. To stimulate critical thought, to challenge how speech-language pathologists (SLPs) achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in supporting people with swallowing/communication disabilities, using a critical, political conscientisation approach. We generate data from our professional and personal experiences interpreted through a decolonial lens to demonstrate how Eurocentric attitudes and practices are at the core of SLPs' knowledge base. We highlight risks associated with SLPs' uncritical use of human rights, the bases of the SDGs. While SDGs are useful, SLPs should take the first steps of becoming politically conscientised to consider whiteness, to ensure that deimperialisation and decolonisation are tightly woven into our sustainable development work. Communication specialists strive to develop communication skills of students and clients using evidence-based practices. There is limited discussion of the topic content of speech-language pathology interventions and language education strategies that act as the vehicle to deliver intervention/education. In this commentary we demonstrate ways materials based on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs; United Nations, 2015) can be integrated into daily practices when working with people with communication disability and people acquiring additional languages. Examples are provided as to how any or all SDGs can be used as the content base within speech-language pathology interventions and language education. A number of situations are presented illustrating SDG-focussed content across diverse settings. This commentary paper focusses on how content from all 17 SDGS that can be embedded into speech-language pathology and language education services to enhance the speech, language, and literacy skills and SDG knowledge of both children and adults. To showcase how applications of automatic speech recognition (ASR) technology could help solve challenges in speech-language pathology practice with children with communication disability, and contribute to the realisation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). ASR technologies have been developed to address the need for equitable, efficient, and accurate assessment and diagnosis of communication disability in children by automating the transcription and analysis of speech and language samples and supporting dual-language assessment of bilingual children. ASR tools can automate the measurement of and help optimise intervention fidelity. ASR tools can also be used by children to engage in independent speech production practice without relying on feedback from speech-language pathologists (SLPs), thus bridging the long-standing gap between recommended and received intervention intensity. These innovative technologies and tools have been generated from interdisciplinary partnerships between SLPs, engineers, data scientists, and linguists. To advance equitable, efficient, and effective speech-language pathology services for children with communication disability, SLPs would benefit from integrating ASR solutions into their clinical practice. Ongoing interdisciplinary research is needed to further advance ASR technologies to optimise children's outcomes. Equitable partnerships across borders, sectors and communities are integral in creating shared understanding, novel solutions and sustainable development. Sustainable development goal (SDG) 17: Partnerships for goals, focuses on strengthening global partnerships. This highlights the importance of partnership as a tool to support the achievement of all SDGs. Partnerships are particularly vital to creating sustainable and appropriate services to support people who experience communication or swallowing disability and their families, in under-served communities, where services and expert personnel may be limited and where innovative strategies are required for working with families and communities to improve service accessibility. To reflect on key principles underpinning the creation of a speech–language pathologists' (SLPs') community of practice, designed to support SLPs from high-, low- and middle-income countries to develop equitable partnerships, aimed at supporting people who experience communication or swallowing disability their families. We draw on the authors' experiences of building partnerships to enhance participation for people who experience communication or swallowing disability. We discuss the need for global partnerships and challenges with current funding mechanisms. We use the principles of the speech–language pathology community of practice and concepts from the Partnership Accelerator 2030 Agenda to frame reflections and recommendations. The United Nations adopted 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2015 as a universal plan to address challenges experienced around the globe. SDG 4 focuses on inclusive and equitable education while SDG 10 aims to reduce inequality within and among countries. To achieve these goals for children with communication disabilities living in underserved communities, equitable access to services is required. Service delivery should be tailored to the unique characteristics of specific communities to best cater to the needs of the population. This commentary presents the Context-specific Service Delivery Framework (CSDF) that can be used to explore contexts systematically and identify suitable speech-language pathology service delivery approaches. CSDF focuses on the three dimensions of sustainability that are emphasised in the SDGs: environmental, social and economic. We present how CSDF was developed in the case of one Majority world country, the Maldives. Five studies were conducted to complete CSDF and the findings were used to derive recommendations for service delivery approaches that could help achieve SDG 4 and SDG 10. These included, building capacity by using asset-based approaches, collaborating with service providers and the community, using population-based methods to focus on prevention of communication disabilities and using available technology to provide support. Other underserved communities could also benefit from using CSDF to design equitable services for children with communication disabilities in their countries. This commentary describes how a grassroot-led partnership initiated by members of the organisations World Federation of NeuroRehabilitation and Collaboration of Aphasia Trialists is addressing the marginalisation of people with aphasia, through education and knowledge exchange related to communication partner training of health professionals. A partnership between academics and healthcare professionals across Austria, Denmark, Egypt, Ireland, Greece, India, Serbia and the United Kingdom was established in 2020. Through bimonthly online sessions in 2021–2022 a Danish communication partner training program was introduced while six teams adapted and translated the training and its materials to their local contexts. A collaborative partnership enabled multiple translations of an existing communication partner training program for healthcare professionals working with people with aphasia to support a sustainable delivery model that is linguistic and culturally sensitive. Minority World countries have often been involved in supporting services for people with communication disability (PWCD) in Majority World countries. In East Africa, this support has historically involved speech-language pathologists (SLPs) from Minority World countries providing therapy; later evolving to include partnerships between Majority and Minority World organisations providing education, training, and support—sometimes with the aim of increasing service sustainability. Our objective is to provide an overview of how partnerships for the goals (SDG 17) has been realised for speech-language pathology services in three East African countries (Uganda, Kenya, and Rwanda). For SLPs, we consider training and education, research opportunities, and the development of the profession. For PWCD, we consider the equity of services. We identify key challenges and successes of UK/East African partnerships, identifying steps for improvement for robust speech-language pathology partnerships. We suggest three key approaches for better-designed partnerships: (1) Improve accessibility, by expanding services to rural areas and coordinating fee setting. (2) Ensure local stakeholders and professionals are included in meaningful and agreed ways. (3) Ensure partnerships complement existing services and are culturally appropriate. These approaches support related goals to achieve better services for PWCD. This invited commentary addresses the importance of the senses in human communication, outlines advances achieved with cochlear implants, and new research directions to improve neural prostheses. In severely deaf people, cochlear implants restore speech understanding and enable children to achieve spoken language. Research in neural prostheses is advancing the restoration of hearing, vision, tactile senses, movement and the management of epilepsy. Bio-inspired stimulation strategies incorporating temporal and spatial characteristics of neural responses may deliver improved speech, vision and tactile perception using prostheses. To achieve stable long-term stimulation, chronic inflammation at the brain-electrode interface may be reduced using ROCK/Rho signalling pathway inhibitors and materials with brain-mimicking properties. The right to communicate, by any means, is key to participation in peaceful and just societies. Participation relies on societal equality which, in turn, depends upon consensus that everyone has the same rights, as well as responsibility to uphold the rights of all. People who experience communication disability are, however, often invisible, misunderstood, stigmatised, and under-enumerated, particularly in resource-limited settings, including humanitarian contexts. A lack of identification and understanding of needs exclude this group from equal societal participation and exposes them to risks, including sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV), which has no place in a peaceful, just, and fair society. In this commentary we explore the importance of the full inclusion and participation of people who experience communication disability, to the fulfilment of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 16. There is a lack of specialist assistance for people who experience communication disability in resource-limited and humanitarian contexts. A broader approach to community and service-provider capacity-building on communication disability demonstrates potential to build stronger institutions and increase societal inclusion and participation, thereby reducing exposure to risks, such as SGBV. Such approaches include increasing public understanding and use of accessible communication strategies, as well as addressing negative attitudes/behaviours and fear. Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) must be prepared to expand their spheres of influence and develop long-term relationships with stakeholders who can instigate change. This may involve de-emphasising our SLP credentials, instead rebranding ourselves as inclusion specialists, with a focus on communication disability. Increased inclusion, participation, and protection are achievable for people who experience communication disability if they are understood, counted, and served appropriately. This requires alignment of communication rights agendas with international development priorities. As such, this commentary paper focuses on peace, justice, and strong institutions (SDG16) and simultaneously addresses aspects of good health and wellbeing (SDG 3), gender equality (SDG 5), reduced inequalities (SDG 10), and partnerships for the goals (SDG 17). To examine the need, feasibility and acceptability of speech-language pathologists (SLPs) implementing a systematic, routine, unmet social needs identification and referral pathway, as a means of promoting health equity and addressing Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Quality Improvement methodologies were used to adapt and pilot an unmet social needs identification and referral pathway for use with parents/carers of children with communication disabilities referred to an urban Australian speech-language pathology service. SLPs were surveyed about the acceptability and feasibility of this practice. The majority of parents/carers, 289 of 293 (99%), agreed to participate in the study, with 31 of the 289 (11%) reporting concerns about unmet social needs. The most common unmet need related to household bills (n = 17, 28%), followed by childcare (n = 12, 20%), employment (n = 10, 16%), food (n = 8, 13%), housing (n = 7, 11%), and parent/carer education (n = 7, 11%). The majority of these families, 26 of 31 (84%), requested referral to, or information about, local community services/resources. SLPs reported high levels of acceptability (93%) and feasibility (98%). This study demonstrates the need, feasibility and acceptability of SLPs implementing an unmet social needs identification and referral pathway, and the potential to scale this initiative across other speech-language pathology services and allied health contexts. This commentary paper focuses on four Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): zero hunger (SDG 2), good health and well-being (SDG 3), industry, innovation and infrastructure (SDG 9), and partnerships for the goals (SDG 17). Each bite of food has the potential to impact on nutrition and well-being, particularly for the older adult aged over 65 years with swallowing disability. Better attention to the shape of the foods presented for consumption may help improve access to food and nutrition through food shaping methods such as 3D food printing. Target objectives across these four SDGs should help to improve the physical and emotional health of older people with swallowing disability who need texture-modified foods. We discuss the potential for methods to improve food shaping and influence better health outcomes for older people, particularly those with swallowing disability. Texture-modified food should be both nourishing and enjoyable while being safe to swallow without coughing or choking; to improve nutrition, health, and quality of life. Along with temperature and taste, the shape of texture-modified foods influences the appeal of the food as important elements of food design. The link between the enjoyment of food and nutrition sets the foundation for a good quality of life for older people. 3D food printing, among other food shaping methods, helps establish this link through the creation of nutritious and appealing foods. Sepsis is a major global health problem with an estimated 49 million cases globally each year causing as many as 11 million deaths. The primary objective of this commentary is to describe the impacts of sepsis and critical illness on communication and swallowing function, and to discuss management strategies considering the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Communication and swallowing disabilities can occur with sepsis and critical illness. A holistic framework to optimise function, recovery, and future research priorities across the lifespan can be developed through the SDGs. Communication and swallowing disabilities following critical illness associated with sepsis have global impacts. Early multidisciplinary engagement is key to optimising individuals' function. Collaborative research, education, and public awareness is urgently needed to increase equity in health outcomes across populations. The Foundations of Early Literacy Assessment – Northern Territory (FELA-NT) was funded, developed, and implemented as part of a strategy designed to address the English literacy learning needs of the Northern Territory's Aboriginal student population. In this paper we question whether the FELA-NT English literacy learning benchmarks are representative of remote and very remote Aboriginal students since many speak English as an Additional Language (EAL) or Dialect (EAD). Using a new data set of scores from 72 Aboriginal students from remote, very remote, and outer-regional communities on the FELA-NT, we demonstrate that it is the student's experience with Standard Australian English, not their remoteness, that impacts their early literacy development. We use this example to illustrate how current practices and policies homogenise the Australian Aboriginal student population, silencing linguistic diversity in the process. We call for clinical practitioners and educators to shift their practices to assessments and tools that recognise children and youths' diverse linguistic skills and pathways. We talk about what empowerment, participation, and inclusion might really mean in current Australian educational and clinical contexts. We argue here that we need to fundamentally rethink how we work with children with diverse language and literacy knowledge, skills, and backgrounds if we are to reduce inequalities (SDG 10), honour quality education (SDG 4), and support sustainable communities (SDG 11). Voice therapy is a complex behavioural intervention. Understanding its components is integral for continued advancement of voice therapy research, translation of evidence into the clinical setting and improved client care. The Motor Learning Classification Framework (MLCF) offers an excellent opportunity for increasing such knowledge, specifically in relation to identifying variables that affect motor learning (ML), an important mechanism hypothesised to bring about voice change during voice therapy. The MLCF has shown promising results in identifying speech-language pathologists' (SLPs) use of ML variables during experimentally controlled voice therapy contexts. The purpose of this study was to test the feasibility of applying the framework in the clinical context of everyday voice therapy practice. Data consisted of two video-recorded voice therapy sessions representing usual voice therapy care. Classification of ML variables used by SLPs during the recorded sessions was attempted based on the MLCF. Several problematic features of the framework were identified. Based on deliberations between the authors of the current paper, the MLCF was revised using an iterative process. This resulted in the construction of an updated version of the framework (MLCF-V2). The MLCF-V2 organises ML strategies into two broad categories: directly observable behaviours and learning processes. The framework incorporates greater consideration of theory and empirical evidence supporting motivational, attentional focus and subjective error estimation influences on ML. Several examples of each ML variable are included as well as an attempt to provide clearer classification instruction. It is anticipated that the MLCF-V2 will provide a more useful and reliable classification for use in future investigations of SLPs' use of ML variables during usual voice therapy practice. The relationship between cognitive processes and language ability in aphasia has recently gained increasing attention, with some authors suggesting that control impairments may underlie difficulties with semantic tasks in aphasia. This paper aims to present an overview of the current research on the involvement of cognitive processes in semantic processing tasks and discuss the proposed relationship between cognitive control and semantic processing in aphasia. The role of cognitive processes in semantic processing tasks commonly used in the aphasiology literature is discussed and two theoretical approaches to semantic processing that contribute to the understanding of the nature of semantic breakdown in aphasia are outlined. Finally, we examine the evidence put forward in the Controlled Semantic Cognition framework with regard to the interpretation of impaired performance on semantic processing tasks in people with aphasia. Non-linguistic cognitive abilities such as working memory, inhibition and control are required by semantic processing tasks, in addition to access to conceptual information, making it difficult to dissociate these abilities. Several issues exist regarding the evidence put forward for a control deficit as the underlying cause of poor performance on semantic processing tasks in aphasia. It remains unclear whether impairment on semantic tasks in people with aphasia is related to problems with the representation and/or processing (activation/retrieval) of meaning or problems with cognitive control (or both). Further research is still needed to fully understand how non-linguistic cognitive processes interact with semantic processing, as well as clarify and consistency the definition of control. In this paper, we offer three paths for the development of innovation in speech-language pathology (SLP), which enhance the discipline's capacity to address issues of diversity, inclusion and cultural responsiveness: transdisciplinary theoretical research, researcher reflexivity, and changes in ethical standards. First, we engage in a reflective conversation to identify facilitators and barriers to innovation we have encountered as academics who speak and write from personal and professional positionings that move between the privileged and the marginalised. Second, we present the results of a critical discourse analysis of the 2020 revisions to Speech Pathology Australia's Code of Ethics and characterise recent changes in the field's expanding understanding of ethical research and clinical practices. Third, we discuss how speech-language pathologists might reconsider their modes of engagement with clients and research populations in our shared area of specialisation—transgender voice. Purpose: Qualitative research methods, grounded in an inductive analytic paradigm, increasingly inform clinical practice in the field of speech-language pathology. Social media research, often including qualitative methods, provides a valuable way to connect and listen to the voices of people with communication disabilities. With growing empirical evidence on the ways that people with communication disabilities use social media, and recognition of both benefits and limitations of its use, it is important to consider what will support clinicians to translate this work conceptually and safely into clinical practice. Method: In this paper, we use the tools of metaphor and arts-based knowledge translation to promote the translation of evidence into social media practice. Results: With social media being an important ecosystem to grow and nurture in speech-language pathology, a "picturing a social media garden" metaphor is proposed to further research translation. The metaphor will be used to frame strategies for applying qualitative techniques for speech-language pathologists to consider how to use social media in clinical and professional practice, as well as citing supporting literature to guide further reading. Conclusion: The suggested approaches could augment existing methods of assessment and intervention for people with communication disabilities and provide support for clinicians who want to develop their own strategy for using social media, build a vibrant social media ecosystem, and integrate social media interventions into their clinical services.
