Radar technology is critical for subsurface sensing applications since it enables the extraction of surface information remotely without being affected by environmental factors such as illumination and weather conditions. Hence, their usage on drones has become extremely essential as these vehicles need to accumulate data while flying over different and possibly difficult-to-access terrains regardless of visibility conditions. A frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) single input multiple output (SIMO) radar system is developed to provide near real-time radar images onboard. The system is comprised of a transceiver module, specifically designed for synthetic aperture radar (SAR) applications, to produce images in real-time. GPU-based computation is utilized to optimize processing power, while enabling range profiles to be generated and SIMO SAR images to be created during flight. The system can be easily mounted on UAV or multirotor systems. The detection and ranging performance of the system are examined by performing several experiments at the campus. Objects up to 100 metres are successfully detected by the radar system. The system demonstrates excellent ability to generate 2D SIMO SAR images, effectively identifying building and guard-box exteriors that are consistent with images from Google Earth. P-band radar interferometry is a promising tool for digital terrain modelling in forested areas such as the Amazon due to the ability of P-band to penetrate densely forested areas. The quality of Digital Terrain Models (DTMs) is a primary requirement for many geoscience applications because DTM accuracy is an essential variable for characterizing landform shapes. This article presents a multicriteria evaluation of the overall quality of a digital terrain model produced using P-band SAR interferometric processing. The evaluation considers behaviours related to elevation and slope and analyses the impact of landscape properties such as slope and aspect. The multicriteria accuracy of the study showed promising results about the realism of landforms, according to applied geomorphological criteria, and also in the visual comparison between the produced DTM and the reference. The study provided an estimate of the accuracy of P-band radar DTM in terms of elevation with a standard deviation of 2.36 m and in terms of slope with a mean error of approximately −4°, a standard deviation of 4.74°, and a RMSE (Root Mean Square Error) slope error of 6.14°, using a reference DTM derived from an airborne LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) survey. The spatial behaviour of these errors and their sensitivity to slope and aspect were analysed. The investigation of hydrographic inconsistencies in the DTM was conducted based on various criteria, including identifying depressions along watercourses and adhering to Horton's law. Finally, the effects of the acquisition, processing, and resampling processes are revealed through indicators such as the rose histogram. Polar lows are small, high-latitude, intense maritime cyclones and frequently have severe impacts on the ocean such as strong winds, high waves and heavy rainfall. They are difficult to observe and forecast due to their short lifetime (<48 hours), small horizontal scales (200 ~ 1000 km), and the sparse synoptic observing network that exists in the subarctic and Arctic oceans. Previous studies have identified and monitored polar lows by visual analysis of visible and thermal infrared imagery from satellites. However, this manual inspection method is subjective, time-consuming and inevitably involves errors in polar low detections. In this study, we present an automatic objective procedure which we demonstrate by detecting polar lows using spaceborne active synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and passive microwave radiometer observations. Based on the marker-controlled watershed segmentation method and the morphological image thinning algorithm, the centre locations of polar lows are determined using RADARSAT-2 and Sentinel-1A high-resolution SAR images and total atmospheric water vapour content fields from radiometers (AMSR2, SSM/I, GMI, and WindSat). Furthermore, the trajectories of polar lows are constructed, using detected centres from multi-temporal SAR and radiometer observations. Polar low detections are confirmed by high surface wind speeds from SAR, scatterometer, and radiometer data, the presence of cloud vortex signatures visible in MODIS, AVHRR, and VIIRS thermal infrared imagery, as well as the difference between the sea surface temperature and the air temperature at 500 hPa. These results show that the proposed methods have potential to automatically detect and track polar lows from multisensor data. We also estimate the characteristic parameters of detected polar lows. To make biologically useful interpretations of the echo signals from an entomological radar (a radar designed and operated to observe insects in flight), it is necessary to relate basic properties of insects (i.e. their mass, size, and form) to their radio-wave scattering characters – e.g. their radar cross-section (RCS) and its variation with aspect or beam polarization. Measurements of RCSs of live or freshly dead specimens in laboratory rigs have played an important role in establishing such relationships, but it is desirable to develop and validate methods employing numerical computation, using electromagnetic calculation software, as a more widely applicable and generalizable alternative. In such computations, the insect is represented by a model with specified size, form, and composition; composition appears as the complex relative permittivity, with both polarizability (real) and loss (imaginary) terms. As a preliminary to investigating how adequately different types of electromagnetic model perform, we have collected and analysed morphometric data on adult, flight-capable specimens of a wide range of insect species, including many known to be migratory and to fly at heights where they would be detectable by radar. Our analyses reveal that appropriate densities for prolate-spheroid models of flying insects are in the range 0.60–0.76 g cm−3, which is about half that measured for air-free samples of the solids and liquids from which insect bodies are formed. From this, appropriate permittivities for the material filling the model are found to be in the range 7–11 (real component) and 2.0–3.5 (imaginary); again, these are much lower than measured values for pure insect-body material. These results enable construction of simple electromagnetic models of insects in which both spatial dimensions and masses are accurate. Computation of model RCSs and their aspect and polarization variations, and comparison of these with laboratory measurements, will be the topic of a follow-up validation study. In this study, a machine learning approach is applied to wind speed retrieval from vertical-vertical (VV) polarized synthetic aperture radar (SAR) during tropical cyclones (TC). More than 2400 dual-polarized (VV and vertical-horizontal (VH)) Sentinel-1 (S-1) images acquired in interferometric wide (IW) and extra wide (EW) mode are collected in 2016–2022. Along-track observations from stepped-frequency microwave radiometer (SFMR) and soil moisture active passive (SMAP) are available for several images. The azimuthal cut-off wavelength (ACW) is derived from VV-polarized image and the Doppler centroid anomaly (DCA) is provided from Ocean (OCN) product. It is found that SFMR wind speed linearly relates with ACW and DCA. Following this rationale, a machine learning method, called eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost), is trained for constructing SAR wind speed retrieval geophysical model function (GMF) through abundant matchups from 2000 images collocated with wind speeds from soil moisture active passive (SMAP) microwave radiometer and SFMR, denoted as TCWIND2-S1. Then GMF TCWIND2-S1 is applied for more than 400 images and the validation against SMAP and SFMR products up to 70 m s−1 shows a 3.01 m s−1 root mean squared error (RMSE) with a 0.16 scatter index (SI) and a 0.92 correlation (COR). Retrieval is also compared with CyclObs wind products derived from more than 400 dual-polarized images, yielding a 2.66 m s−1 RMSE with a 0.19 SI and a 0.93 COR. Our work provides an approach for VV-polarized SAR wind retrieval at wind speed ranged from 0 to 70 m s−1 during TCs. Radar signatures of rain over the ocean have a complex structure since they receive contributions from surface scattering and volume scattering and attenuation by hydrometeors in the atmosphere. These contributions overlap and are often difficult to detangle. While most of the mechanisms contributing to radar signatures of rain over the ocean are well understood, there is one remaining issue that has been discussed controversially in the literature for a long time. It is the question what scattering mechanism causes the areas of strongly enhanced radar backscatter, also called 'bright blobs' or 'bright patches', which are frequently observed on spaceborne C-band SAR images acquired over tropical and subtropical oceans in the presence of convective rain. Recently, papers have been published in which it is hypothesized that they are caused by radar backscattering at hydrometeors in the melting layer (ML). Although many observational facts seem to support this hypothesis, there exists one strong argument against this hypothesis: It is the observation that the position of the ML radar signatures (bright blob) in the SAR image is not shifted in anti-range from the position, where the rain column hits the sea surface. This absence of a shift is observed when 1) comparing Sentinel-1 SAR images on which rain cells are visible with quasi-concurrently acquired weather radar images and 2) when inter-comparing of SAR images of rain cells acquired concurrently at different frequencies and polarizations. Based on these observations, we discard the hypothesis that the bright blobs are due to volume scattering at hydrometeors in the ML and hypothesize instead that they are due to scattering at splash products at the sea surface. This hypothesis is supported by radar backscattering measurements carried out in the laboratory and from a shore-based platform, which show that, at C-and X-band, strong rain can give rise to strong radar returns also at cross-polarization. In this paper, sea surface waves during complex sea state (i.e. tropical cyclones (TCs) and Kuroshio current) are inverted from dual-polarized (vertical – vertical (VV) and vertical – horizontal (VH)) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images using an existing algorithm, namely, the parameterized first-guess spectrum method (PFSM). In particular, the wind term is included in two modulation transfer functions (MTFs), i.e. tilt modulation and velocity bunching. More than 3000 Sentinel (S-1) images acquired in interferometric wide (IW) mode and extra wide (EW) mode are collected, and the operational CyclObs wind product provided by the French Research Institute for Exploitation of the Oceans (IFREMER) is collected corresponding to the TC images. Note that these images are located within 500 km away from TC eyes. The wave spectra during the TCs are then inverted using the PFSM algorithm and the SAR-derived wind product. Simultaneously, the 0.05° gridded wave spectra collocated with these images are simulated using a third-generation numeric wave model, called WAVEWATCH-III (WW3), in which the reconstructed wind based on the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), the Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service (CMEMS) current, and the CMEMS sea level are treated as the forcing field. Comparison of the SAR wave retrievals and simulations reveals that the root mean square errors (RMSEs) of the significant wave height (SWH) and mean wave period (MWP) are 0.55 m and 0.43 s, their correlation coefficients (COR) are 0.94 and 0.92, and their scatter index (SI) values are 0.17 and 0.07. These results demonstrate the better performance of the PFSM algorithm using theoretical MTFs, i.e. an RMSE of 0.68 m and COR of 0.90 for the SWH and an RMSE of 0.60 s and a COR of 0.87 for the MWP. Although the accuracy of the wave retrieval from the SAR image under complex sea state is improved when implementing the tilt and velocity bunching MTFs with the strong wind term, SWH retrievals by algorithm PFSM suffer saturation problem at SWH > 8 m. The Radar Cross Section (RCS) plays a crucial role in radar systems, serving to detect and characterize radar targets. Moreover, the need to penetrate foliage and capture images of man-made structures like roads and buildings has driven the development of very high frequency/ultra high frequency (VHF/UHF)-based radar systems. In this context, we propose a novel polyphase-coded spread spectrum (PCSS) radar system designed for RCS measurements and ISAR imaging over VHF/UHF radio channels in open environments. To provide a comprehensive understanding, we examined the open range, considering factors such as amplitude distribution function, root mean square (RMS) delay, and coherence bandwidth, followed by a link budget analysis. We also conducted a comparative study of RCS measurements to evaluate the performance of the proposed radar system, demonstrating its effectiveness through theoretical calculations. Based on particle swarm optimization-back propagation (PSO-BP) neural network, a novel inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) image quality assessment (IQA) method is proposed to address the challenge of selecting high-quality ISAR images from a large number of images. This method incorporates six assessment metrics: energy gradient (EG), effective area ratio of image (EARI), image contrast (IC), image entropy (IE), equivalent number of looks (ENL), and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) to evaluate the quality of ISAR images. The PSO-BP neural network is employed to fit the relationship between these metrics and ISAR image quality. Experimental results show that the new method is effective in ISAR-IQA under different imaging conditions and various attitudes, and closely matches the subjective evaluation of experts. With the advancement of spaceborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) resolution, the conventional stop-and-go approximation-based motion model is no longer suitable for high-resolution imaging algorithms. This paper conducts a comprehensive analysis of the approximation errors resulting from the stop-and-go approximation and proposes corresponding compensation methods. Firstly, an accurate echo model based on continuous platform motion is derived from the SAR geometry configuration. The impact of these errors on range and azimuth imaging is analysed from a spectral perspective, and the applicable boundary conditions are examined. Subsequently, compensation methods are proposed to eliminate the introduced approximation errors, addressing both"fast time" and"slow time" effects, thus enabling high-resolution imaging through improvements in traditional imaging algorithms. Experimental simulations validate the effectiveness of the error analysis and compensation methods, using X-band low Earth orbit SAR as an illustrative example. The proposed methods are not only compatible with existing mature imaging algorithms, but the analytical approach and compensation methods are also applicable to SAR systems operating on different carrier frequencies, orbits, and platforms. Distributed Inverse Synthetic Aperture Radar (ISAR) systems employ multiple spatially separated radars to observe a target, with the potential to enhance radar imaging azimuth resolution and gather more target information. Due to the existence of gaps in the observation angles of each radars, the coherence between pulses of radar echo is disrupted during fusion imaging, making it challenging for the Range-Doppler (RD) algorithm to achieve well-focused images. This paper proposes an imaging method based on sparse signal recovery (SSR), using the reweighted ${l_1}$ l 1 norm with convolution and total variation as regularization terms. This approach not only yields well-focused ISAR images but also better preserves the overall target information compared to other methods, while also exhibiting excellent noise resistance. In addition, the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) algorithm is utilized for the solution to reduce computational complexity. Acquiring precise change map for synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images poses challenges due to the absence of labelled datasets and the presence of speckle noise interference. This paper presents a two-stage fusion strategy coupled with capsule network classification detection method. Initially, to enhance the structure of change areas within the difference image (DI), we propose an energy ratio (ER) algorithm based on the mean ratio (MR). Subsequently, employing a two-stage fusion strategy integrating multiplication and discrete wavelet transform (DWT), we fuse the DIs generated by the three algorithms to effectively complement change information across distinct DIs. In addition, a saliency detection algorithm is introduced to mitigate noise interference and balance the number of samples. Hierarchical fuzzy c-means clustering (HFCM) is then used to pre-classify the salient fusion difference image (SFDI) and derive pseudo-labels. Finally, we apply the residual shrinkage capsule network (RSCN) to reclassify pre-classification results and obtain the change detection outcome, capable of extracting the multi-scale refinement features and adaptively learning discriminant information from changed and unchanged regions. The outbreaks of green tide have caused severe harm to the marine environment and human society. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) plays an important role in green tide monitoring by virtue of its high resolution and cloud-free nature. The existing green tide extraction methods still face challenges in identifying multi-scale green tide patches due to noise interference, uneven greyscale and blurred boundaries in SAR images. Meanwhile, the practical application of deep learning methods with high precision is limited due to the complexity of the model and the large amount of computation. Therefore, we propose a multi-scale context-aware and batch-independent lightweight green tide extraction network called MBL-Net. A novel lightweight heterogeneous backbone is designed to extract multi-scale discriminative features and improve segmentation efficiency by using multi-scale selection kernel (MSK) modules and lightweight stages. Meanwhile, Triplet attention module is introduced to improve the internal consistency of the green tide region and suppress the effect of speckle noise. Then, the mixed pooling-based channel prior module (MCPM) is used to expand the receptive field of the network and extract the fine green tide structure by fusing multi-scale features. In addition, Filter Response Normalisation (FRN) is innovatively applied for feature normalization in the decoding stage, eliminating batch dependency. In order to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, a dataset is built using the Sentinel-1 images of the Yellow Sea, China, from 2019 to 2021. The experimental results show that the proposed method achieves an overall accuracy of 98.59% with 0.970 G FLOPs and 3.525 M parameters, which ensures high precision and improves green tide detection efficiency. L-band spaceborne polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) data has been well used for the high-resolution retrieval of the ionospheric Faraday rotation (FR). A vast majority of these retrievals were, however, conducted on PolSAR data of lands, with only a very few over oceans. For the global imaging of the Earth's ionosphere, the retrieval of oceanic ionosphere is indispensable. This paper aims to furnish a deep insight into the FR retrieval on oceans using the widely used Bickel-Bates estimator based on the two cross-circular polarizations ${Z_{12}}$ Z 12 and ${Z_{21}}$ Z 21 . The FR estimates (FRE) on oceans are evaluated in detail by comparing with those on lands on four ALOS PALSAR datasets. The achieved oceanic FRE are shown to possess comparable or even better quality than those on lands. It occurs in three of the four scenes that the selected ocean sub-area holds a smaller standard deviation (STD) of FRE (less than 0.7000°) than all the selected land sub-areas. Especially, the quality of FRE is shown to be closely linked to the dispersed degree of the magnitude of the conjugate product of ${Z_{12}}$ Z 12 and ${Z_{21}}$ Z 21 via the analysis of coefficient of variation (CV), according to which the unusual occurrence of larger magnitude level corresponding to larger STD of FRE can be explained. Nevertheless, compared with CV, the magnitude of the polarimetric coherence between ${Z_{12}}$ Z 12 and ${Z_{21}}$ Z 21 (i.e. $\left| \gamma \right|$ γ ) is identified as a better index to measure the quality of FRE. A smaller STD of FRE appears along with a larger $\left| \gamma \right|$ γ . Three of the four scenes show that the selected ocean sub-area bears a larger mean of $\left| \gamma \right|$ γ (greater than 0.9890) in comparison with all the selected land sub-areas. In inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) imaging, the conventional range-Doppler (RD) algorithm cannot obtain satisfactory imaging results for sparse aperture. Compressed sensing (CS) imaging methods, such as the typical iterative shrinkage and thresholding algorithm (ISTA), are often used in sparse aperture radar imaging. However, CS-based methods have high computational complexity and difficulty in setting parameters. To overcome the shortcomings, a new deep unfolding network named complex-valued weighted learning ISTA (CV-WLISTA) is proposed in this paper. The new network is very efficient and can learn the parameters adaptively. Based on ISTA and a new weighting strategy, it takes advantage of both the sparsity and the structural property of ISAR images to improve imaging performance. The experimental results show that CV-WLISTA has better reconstruction performance and higher efficiency compared with the traditional algorithms. Ship detection in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images is widely applied in marine monitoring. In recent years, convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have made significant advances in SAR ship detection. However, the scene imbalance problem, i.e. much more offshore scenes than inshore scenes in SAR images, severely hampers the improvement of detection accuracy. In this article, we propose scene-aware data augmentation to address the problem. First, a novel concept, inshore rate, is introduced to estimate the land area percentage of various scenes in SAR images. We can divide image samples into inshore and offshore ones based on the inshore rate without manual category annotations. Second, to augment inshore samples, we synthesize dummy inshore images by cropping the ground truth bounding boxes (GT bboxes) from offshore images and pasting them onto inshore images. This offline data augmentation strategy can address the scene imbalance problem and improve detection accuracy. Knowledge about the vertical structure of forests, such as forest height, above-ground biomass (AGB), and the vertical biomass distribution is important for understanding carbon allocation, structural diversity, and succession and degradation dynamics in forest ecosystems. While the use of lidar (light detection and ranging) observations is well established to investigate the vertical structure of forests, the sensitivity of P-band synthetic aperture radar tomography (TomoSAR) observations to biomass and vertical forest structure is not yet well understood. Here we use lidar observations from NASA's Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) to analyse the sensitivity of airborne P-band SAR tomography backscatter to forest height and AGB at two tropical forests in Lopé and Mondah, Gabon, Africa. We use GEDI observations to parametrize an empirical model for estimating forest height and we use a random forest model for estimating AGB from TomoSAR profiles. The validation with Land, Vegetation, and Ice Sensor (LVIS) airborne lidar data shows moderate performance for estimating forest height (RMSE = 8.2 m in Lopé and 9.8 m in Mondah) and moderate to good performance for total AGB (RMSE = 115.3 Mg/ha in Lopé and 117.8 Mg/ha in Mondah). We also estimated the vertical distribution of AGB using the corrected TomoSAR backscatter and compared it with AGB profiles derived from field observations in Mondah, which indicates potential to use TomoSAR observations for estimating vertical AGB distribution over tropical forests. However, our results demonstrate the need for targeted field observations of vertical biomass profiles in order to make full use of P-band TomoSAR to map the vertical structure of tropical forests. The forest canopy active fuel load (CAFL) is easily flammable that is usually consumed in the flaming front, and is a critical factor in crown fire early prediction, suppression and response. Previous studies universally relied on optical remote sensing data, whose effectiveness is extremely limited in regions with cloud cover and haze, such as the southwest of Sichuan, China. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) can work 24 h and is not affected by weather conditions. This study aims to evaluate the potential of volume backscattering coefficients extracted through decomposition of polarimetric SAR (PolSAR, Radarsat-2 C band) for CAFL estimation. The polarimetric decomposition method used in this study was based on Freeman-Durden decomposition. The separated volume backscattering coefficients were used to estimate CAFL based on the variant of the extended water cloud model (VEWCM). For comparison, the SAR raw observations and extended water cloud model (EWCM) were also used to estimate CAFL. The performance of these two models was validated through quantitative assessment, utilizing CAFL measurements obtained from southwest Sichuan and the leave-one-out cross-validation method. Results show that the VEWCM (R2 = 0.69, RMSE = 0.87 tons/ha) performed better than EWCM (R2 = 0.60, RMSE = 1.48 tons/ha) especially in HV polarization. We concluded that PolSAR has the potential to improve CAFL estimation and further assist with pre-fire risk warnings, fire suppression responses, and post-fire effects assessment. The ecological and environmental impact of marine oil pollution underlines the importance and necessity of an oil spill surveillance system. This study proposes an operational automated oil spill detection and early warning system to help take quick action for oil combating operations. Oil slicks in the spaceborne Sentinel-1 synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data are detected by a trained deep learning-based oil object detector. These detected oil objects are segmented into binary masks based on the similarity and discontinuity of the backscattering coefficients, and their trajectory is simulated. The detection process was tested on one-year SAR acquisitions in 2019, covering the Southeastern Mediterranean Sea; the false discovery rate (FDR) and false negative rate (FNR) are 23.3% and 24.0%, respectively. The system takes around 1.5 h from downloading SAR images to providing slick trajectory simulation. Marine oil spills are currently among the most challenging problems in marine environments. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), with all-day and all-weather observation, has demonstrated great potential in oil disaster monitoring. A simple encoder-decoder network model was proposed by using SAR images for effective oil spill detection. The proposed model incorporates an optimized U-Net architecture that reduces computational requirements while maintaining detection performance. This is achieved through shortened encoder and decoder stages, depthwise separable convolutions, group normalization, and bilinear interpolation-based upsampling. To improve the model's generalization, the auto-learning rate and focal loss function are also included. Two public SAR datasets acquired by different sensors have been used to illustrate the efficiency of the proposed model. Presence of cloud-covered pixels is inevitable in optical remote-sensing images. Therefore, the reconstruction of the cloud-covered details is important to improve the usage of these images for subsequent image analysis tasks. Aiming to tackle the issue of high computational resource requirements that hinder the application at scale, this paper proposes a Feature Enhancement Network(FENet) for removing clouds in satellite images by fusing Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and optical images. The proposed network consists of designed Feature Aggregation Residual Block (FAResblock) and Feature Enhancement Block (FEBlock). FENet is evaluated on the publicly available SEN12MS-CR dataset and it achieves promising results compared to the benchmark and the state-of-the-art methods in terms of both visual quality and quantitative evaluation metrics. It proved that the proposed feature enhancement network is an effective solution for satellite image cloud removal using less computational and time consumption. Forest canopy height data are crucial for estimating forest carbon storage and assessing forest ecology. By utilizing satellite imagery, canopy height data obtained from airborne or spaceborne LiDAR have been expanded from footprint and plot levels to spatially continuous elevation mapping of forests. However, current research suggests that estimating forest canopy height without forest type data presents a challenge in how to effectively integrate multi-source LiDAR data and ensure the samples adequately represent various forest types for higher estimation accuracy. Therefore, this study proposes a forest canopy height estimation method that considers forest structure and integrates multi-source LiDAR data to overcome the challenge. First, a stratified sampling method based on forest structure (SSMFS) was proposed to select training samples and enhance their representativeness. Second, we combined GEDI and ATL08 data to create a multi-source spaceborne LiDAR dataset, enhancing geographic coverage and increasing canopy height samples. Third, the spaceborne LiDAR-based canopy height estimation model incorporates previously unconsidered canopy openness features and uses SSMFS to select training samples. Finally, we improved spaceborne LiDAR canopy height accuracy by creating a residual correction model that adjusts for differences between airborne scanner (ALS) and spaceborne LiDAR estimates. This study, conducted in Zhangwu County, achieved an accuracy of R2 = 0.71, MAE = 1.20 m, and RMSE = 1.71 m. These results show a 51.06% increase in R2, a 26.38% decrease in MAE, and a 24.00% decrease in RMSE compared to recent research. The soil freeze-thaw (FT) state plays a significant role in cold ecosystems by influencing hydrology, geomorphology, ecology, thermodynamics, and soil chemistry. As climate change alters the frequency and timing of FT events, regions, such as the Tibetan Plateau and other subarctic permafrost zones, face significant environmental shifts, including land subsidence, altered hydrological processes, and carbon balance disturbances. This study aimed to detect frozen, thawed, and transition periods, with a particular emphasis on the identification of critical transition periods. A new approach called Percentile-based Freeze-Thaw Identification (PFTI) was applied to identify the three FT periodsusing C-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data, specifically using Sentinel-1 VV and VH polarizations in both ascending and descending orbits. The PFTI approach is based on the Seasonal Threshold Approach (STA) with some modifications. We assessed the performance of PFTI against STA and validated it using the in-situ soil FT index. PFTI slightly improved the STA by 4% to 6% in detecting FT cycles over the Nagqu area of the Tibetan Plateau and Stordalen Mire in northern Sweden from 2017 to 2022. Moreover, PFTI demonstrated an accuracy of 94% without and 70% with transition periods in the Stordalen Mire, and 77% without and 50% with transition periods in the Nagqu area, as validated by in situ measurements. This study demonstrates the potential of PFTI on a monthly scale for detecting frozen, thawed, and transition periods on a regional scale to better monitor shifts due to the impacts of climate change in the most vulnerable regions. Matching optical and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images is often challenged by intricate geometric distortion and nonlinear radiation differences, leading to insufficient and unevenly distributed corresponding points. To tackle this issue, we propose a lightweight deep convolutional network with inverted residuals for optical and SAR image matching. Initially, a fully convolutional neural network (FCNN) is designed to extract high-level and semantic features, robustly capturing universal characteristics between optical and SAR images, adept at handling geometric distortion and nonlinear radiation changes. Notably, we integrate a lightweight architecture with inverted residuals into FCNN to adeptly extract local and global contextual information, facilitating feature reuse and minimizing the loss of crucial features. Additionally, a vector-refined module is deployed to refine dense features, filtering out redundant information. Subsequently, a coarse-to-fine strategy is employed to further eliminate gross errors or incorrect matches. Finally, we evaluate the performance of the proposed network in optical and SAR image matching against manually-designed methods and state-of-the-art deep learning techniques. Experimental results demonstrate that our network significantly surpasses existing methods in terms of the number of correct matches and matching accuracy. Because of high-resolution imaging in day and night and any weather condition, Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) has various applications in remote sensing. Building detection is one of the important utilization of SAR images. With analysing SAR images information, a new framework based on fusion of statistical, texture, and semantic features is proposed. At first, in order to reduce the speckle noise effects on the classification results, the SAR image is segmented into superpixels which the classification process is performed for these segments. Then, the statistical Fisher and Haralick texture features are extracted and the best features are selected. By applying an adapted VGGNet, the third type of features are extracted. Using training samples, the features achieving the highest classification accuracy are selected and applied to the classifier. Then, the classification output is improved by decreasing the splitting of the large-size buildings and false alarms using morphological operations and contour fitting process. The performance of the proposed framework is evaluated with two different types of TerraSAR-X images of urban areas. Surface movements pose a critical issue requiring prompt detection and monitoring to ensure safety. To address this concern, the detection and continuous monitoring of surface deformations have gained importance. While numerous point-based surveying methods exist, multi-temporal interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) analysis has emerged as a powerful technique capable of detecting deformations across large areas with freely available SAR images and software. However, the significance of surface movement forecasting must be addressed, as it plays a significant role in preventing accidents and implementing precautionary measures. In light of this, a comprehensive study was conducted at the new Istanbul Airport in Türkiye, employing the Persistent Scatterer InSAR (PSI) method with a collection of 211 Sentinel-1 SAR images. The results obtained were investigated, and six test case regions were determined for the forecasting analysis in terms of time series movement type (subsidence, uplift, and stable) and structure type (runway and building) using various machine learning (ML) algorithms. To accomplish this, regression-based and sequential-based ML algorithms were employed and compared, showing the potential of cutting-edge techniques. The Stacked LSTM algorithm was the most effective in generating accurate forecasts. Furthermore, by incorporating exogenous variables into the forecasting analysis, the study improved the accuracy of the results. To gain deeper insights into the impact of these exogenous variables, feature importance analysis was conducted using the permutation feature importance method. Retrieving surface soil moisture on a local scale using Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data and Deep Learning (DL) models necessitates a substantial volume of data, which may not be available in all scenarios. In this study, the application of transfer learning was introduced as a novel approach to address the scarcity of training samples for DL models in the context of soil moisture retrieval. The proposed DL model was initially trained using International Soil Moisture Network (ISMN) data, followed by a fine-tuned process on a local scale using field trip data from an agricultural area in Karaj, Iran. The proposed DL model was compared against Random Forest Regressor (RFR), Support Vector Regression (SVR), and Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) based on Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), Mean Absolute Error (MAE), and R2 indicators. All models underwent hyperparameter-tunning, and their performance was evaluated using 8-fold cross-validation (CV) and various combinations of inputs. The proposed DL model outperformed other models on a local scale achieving an RMSE, MAE, and R2 of 2.42 vol%, 1.66 vol%, and 0.90, respectively. The MLP model also exhibited good performance with an RMSE, MAE, and R2 of 2.84 vol%, 2.04 vol%, and 0.88 compared to the RFR with 2.83 vol%, 2.20 vol%, and 0.86, respectively. Additionally, the SVR yielded an RMSE, MAE, and R2 of 3.71 vol%, 3.05 vol%, and 0.78. In recent years, Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) Tomography (TomoSAR) has ascertained great potential for the three-dimensional (3-D) reconstruction of observed scenes, especially in urban areas. However, the number of proceed snapshots (observations) is usually less than that of slant height samples (unknowns) in TomoSAR inversion processes. This impairs the quality of the reconstructed vertical information. To cope with this issue and improve the reliability of reconstructed vertical information, this paper investigates the possible potential of a deterministic descriptive regularization-based method. Deterministic descriptive regularization is a well-conditioned optimization framework based on the descriptive idea of a regularization solution. This strategy can help to mitigate the effect of the ill-posed problem. Thus, it can assist SAR tomography to deal with the possible impairing issues arising from low numbers and the distribution of baselines. For this purpose, the result of the proposed strategy is compared with the outcomes from the standard TomoSAR techniques, including Beamforming, Capon, and Minimum Norm. The proposed method for reconstruction of the reflectivity function of the observed scene has been performed on a dataset acquired by the Sentinel-1 sensor in 2022 over Tehran City, Iran. The experimental results indicate that the proposed algorithm can estimate building heights with a vertical accuracy of better than 91%. Recently, frameworks fusing the convolutional neural network (CNN) and Markov random field (MRF) models have been successfully used in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) image classification. Over-smoothing of the details and the incapability to eliminate regional-level misclassification are two common drawbacks of these frameworks, which are caused by the use of conventional neighbourhood consistency based spatial constraints. To address these problems, a neighbourhood heterogeneity confidence – Markov random field (NHC-MRF) and CNN-based framework is proposed for SAR image classification. In this framework, an NHC index is constructed in the binary energy function of the NHC-MRF to refine the conventional spatial constraints by adaptively allowing the existence of heterogeneity in the neighbourhood. The NHC index consists of a label coexisting probability term and a top-2 label term, which are constructed based on the outputs of the CNN. By using the label coexisting probability term, the details can be protected by allowing heterogeneity, and the regional-level misclassification can be eliminated by adjusting the impact of the neighbourhoods by using label coexisting probability based weighting. The top-2 label term is used as a correction of the coexisting probability term considering the disturbance of speckle noise. The NHC-MRF is further fused with a CNN by constructing the unary energy term and initial labels based on the outputs of the CNN. The effectiveness and superiority of the proposed framework are experimentally demonstrated using three SAR datasets. The experimental results demonstrate that the superiority of the NHC-MRF is derived from the simultaneous realization of retaining details and eliminating regional-level misclassification. In this study, we synergistically used Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and optical observations to characterize the Internal Solitary Waves (ISW) in the Andaman Sea and Arabian Sea region. Total 25 scenes combined from EOS-04, Sentinel-1&2 satellites are considered for the year 2022. Various approaches, including Fast Fourier Transform (FFT), Multiple Image Comparison (MIC), Tidal Time Period (TTP) and Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equations, were employed to characterize the ISW, and its spatial and seasonal variations are also analysed. The dominant wavelength of ISW over the Andaman Sea in June 2022 is found to be 6500 m travelling towards the Andaman coast. The overall phase speed of ISW in the Andaman Sea lies in the range of 1.87–2.60 ms−1. It shows a seasonal variation of around 16% between winter and summer months, where a significant variation in the seasonal mixed layer depth was noticed. The phase speed also decreased as the ISW travelled from deep water to shallower regions. In contrast, the dominant wavelength of ISW in the continental shelf region of the west coast of India (near Goa) was much smaller (~400 m) compared to the Andaman Sea. Here, the ISW phase speed estimated using MIC and TTP methods was ~ 0.56 ms−1 in February 2022. The KdV equation yielded lower estimates of phase speed compared to the other two methods. Monitoring marine oil pollution holds both practical and scientific significance. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is an active microwave remote sensing technique capable of all-weather and all-day with fine spatial resolution. However, under low wind conditions, rain cells and young ice are examples of look-alikes affect the accuracy of oil spill detection. Polarimetric SAR assumes a crucial role in this context, as it can extract abundant polarimetric features by polarimetric target decomposition. Drawing inspiration from this advancement, an improved polarimetric feature named relative feature based on Cloude-Pottier target decomposition was proposed. The Jeffries-Matusita distance indicates the substantial potential of the relative feature in detecting oil spills. The improved polarimetric feature within U-Net, FCN-8s, and DeepLabv3+ResNet-18 for oil spill detection using polarization SAR images. Experiment results demonstrated that the relative feature has superior performance compared to other polarimetric features and obtained the highest accuracy and dice within U-Net compared to the other two models. Classification with a few samples of training set has been a long-standing issue in the field of polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) image analysis and processing. In fact, one of the most important challenges of the PolSAR image classification task is the number of labelled samples. In essence, training network by utilizing just few numbers of training samples cannot be led to the reliable result since the neural network is so sensitive to the number of training samples. In addition, in the real PolSAR image classification task, the huge number of training samples is not accessible. On the other hand, classification performance using just small number of labelled samples is not an accurate result. So, in this paper, aiming at the small number of training samples of the PolSAR image classification task, a novel ensemble self-supervised feature-learning (ESSFL) model is designed. The designed ESSFL can automatically extract PolSAR features conducive to PolSAR image classification with a small number of training samples. In addition, it can significantly decrease the dependence of neural network algorithms on large labelled samples of training set. First, to utilize the spatial–polarimetric features of PolSAR data perfectly, the EfficientNet-B0 is presented and utilized as the main section of the deep learning (DL) model to extract DL features of PolSAR data. Then, using an optimization function that constrains the cross-correlation matrix of various distortions of each sample to the identity matrix, the designed deep learning model can obtain the effective features of homogeneous samples gathering together and heterogeneous samples separating from each other in a self-supervised manner. Moreover, two ensemble learning (EL) models, feature-level and view-level ensemble, are proposed to increase the feature extraction capability and classification result by jointly using spatial features at different scales and polarimetric information at different bands. Finally, the stack of the obtained features and the main polarimetric information of PolSAR data can be input into classifier for the classification of PolSAR data. In this paper we use two different classifiers, the first one is the Random Forest (RF) classifier and the second one is the Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifier. The advantages of SVM include that it can be used to avoid the difficulties of using linear functions in the high-dimensional feature space, and the optimization problem is transformed into dual convex quadratic programs that are so usable for an actual image classification task. In addition, among all the available classification methods, random forests provide one of the highest accuracies. The random forest technique can also handle big data with numerous variables running into thousands. In fact, it can automatically balance data sets when a class is more infrequent than other classes in the data that is so important for a real PolSAR image classification task. Experimental results on three well-known PolSAR data sets illustrate that the designed ESSFL can extract more discriminant features using the designed deep learning model. In the end, the experiments prove that the designed ESSFL has a significant classification performance compared with different deep learning models in the case of small number of training samples, and also it can achieve a better result in the case of large number of training samples by comparison with the most of the deep learning models. Maritime ship classification is essential for effectively monitoring oceanic activities but faces challenges when using heterogeneous remote sensing data. This research presents a novel dataset called Heterogeneous Ship Data, created by combining synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and optical satellite images of ships. The integration of multimodal data aims to harness the complementary advantages of SAR's all-weather imaging capabilities and optical data's higher interretability and shape discrimination. To leverage the heterogeneous dataset, this paper proposes an ensemble deep learning model called MS3Net (Multi-convolutional network using Spatial attention and Second-order pooling for Ship image classification). MS3Net integrates spatial attention mechanisms and second-order pooling. MS3Net has multiple convolutional branches, each tailored to extract distinct representations from the SAR and optical data through varied filter sizes and kernels. The spatial attention units focus the learning on the most informative parts of the image while suppressing irrelevant features. The second-order pooling captures higher-order interactions between feature elements to model complex relationships. A concatenation fusion strategy aggregates the diverse branch outputs into a joint multimodal feature representation for enhanced discrimination. Extensive experiments demonstrate MS3Net's superior classification accuracy over prior state-of-the-art approaches. Urban subsidence poses significant challenges for rapidly developing cities. Published InSAR data reveal Kathmandu as a prime example, demonstrating an alarming rate of subsidence during rapid urban expansion. To monitor the spatiotemporal evolution of recent subsidence, we use Sentinel-1 Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data and the LiCSBAS open-source processing package. Vertical surface motion maps from 2015 to present reveal many localized zones with high subsidence rates (>100 mm year−1), while the mountains that surround the valley have experienced slight surface uplift of ~5 mm year−1. The highest subsidence rate is ~200 mm year−1 and occurs in the centre of the Kathmandu metropolitan area. The distribution of subsidence in the valley matches with areas of the Pliocene to recent sediment up to 500 m thick. The deep aquifer compaction is likely to be the main driver of subsidence in the Kathmandu Valley. Time-series data show a dominant linear subsidence signal with weak sinusoidal signal peaks associated with groundwater recharge of shallow aquifers during the monsoon season. Subsidence rates decrease in proximity to the main river channels, likely driven by the seasonal recharge into the distal floodplain. In the capitalist rush to attract more visitors, cities are committing significant resources to heritage conservation, driven by the substantial economic benefits generated by the tourism industry. However, less famous or less well-resourced cities, often with smaller populations, also known as intermediary cities, find it difficult to allocate funds to protect their most significant heritage sites. In this conservation context, intermediary cities, often on the periphery or 'at the margins', can fill the gaps and needs of urbanism through a better strategic understanding of the challenges of global touristification, thus this research provides urban planning tools for local governments with limited resources to preserve their architectural heritage through remote sensing, for its advantages in terms of lower economic cost, as a valuable monitoring tool to effectively identify high-vulnerability sites that require priority attention in the conservation of architectural heritage. In other words, it allows for a reduction in the territory of those areas located 'at the margins' in terms of urban planning and management, by approaching the territorial, urban, architectural and tourism problems from a transdisciplinary perspective in the preservation of the architectural heritage. This study explores the application of optical (Sentinel-2) using neural networks for classifying the land cover and radar (Sentinel-1 and PAZ) satellite images to obtain the ground motion as a geotechnical risk study, together with geospatial data, for the monitoring of architectural heritage in intermediate cities. Focusing on the districts of Bragança and Guarda in Portugal, the approach allows the direct identification of vulnerable architectural heritage, identifying 9 highly-vulnerable areas using PAZ data and 7 areas using Sentinel-1 data. The Southeast Asian (SEA) region represents a complex coastal geographical location. Most countries in SEA are encircled by the ocean, with lowlands coastal areas. The advantages of long-term satellite altimetry and tide gauge measurements have enabled climate-related research, particularly sea level rise, to be examined extensively in spatial and temporal scales. In this study, sea level anomaly (SLA) derived from 26 years of multi-mission satellite altimeter data plus approximately 28 years of tidal data have been utilized. Then, the projection for every 10 years starting from 2030 until 2100 has been analysed using machine learning regression. The projections are then evaluated based on the global model of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The findings presented that sea level rise trends around SEA with overall means of 4.70 ± 0.37 mm yr−1 for the satellite altimeter and 3.41 ± 0.24 mm yr−1 for the coastal tide gauge. Sea level projection from coastal tide gauge and satellite altimeter are expected to rise up to 34.87 and 33.71 cm, respectively, in 2100. These outcomes prove that the altimetry data from Radar Altimeter Database System (RADS) and the redundant tidal data are capable in measuring the sea level in SEA. These results are also expected to be valuable for multidisciplinary environmental studies in SEA, such as coastal flooding, coastal erosion, and other effect of global warming. This paper presents a methodology for automatically generating 3D models of individual shrubs from point clouds acquired by Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) devices. The creation of accurate 3D models for shrubs holds significant value for ecological studies. The shrub modelling is more challenging compared to other tree modelling tasks, due to the presence of substantial noise and fuzzy branch structures. To address these challenges, our approach first partitions the input point cloud into two categories: branches and others. This point segmentation process effectively eliminates interference of leaves and noise, thereby enhancing the visibility of branch skeletons. Then, we construct a triangulation network using the branch points and establish a minimum spanning tree (MST) based on this network. Serving as the initial skeleton representation of the plant, the MST preserves the essential topological structures of the branches. Within the extracted MST, we implement a recursive trimming technique to eliminate redundant branches by merging adjacent points and edges, ultimately consolidating the skeleton structure. Finally, we employ an adaptive cylinder fitting algorithm that relies on robust principal component analysis (RPCA) to generate the model. The effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method are demonstrated via experiments on different datasets, with an average fitting error of 1.13 cm, indicating that our approach can achieve high accuracy in modelling individual shrubs.
