A model based on ASNYS CFX was established to explore the pressure drop and heat transfer characteristics of condensation flow with hydrocarbon mixtures in a spiral pipe under static and heaving conditions, whose deviations are within ±15% compared to experimental ones. It considered the effects of motion parameters, operating parameters and structural parameters on frictional pressure drop and heat transfer coefficient for three hydrocarbon mixtures. The ranges of mass flux, vapor quality, heat flux, saturation pressure, hydraulic diameter, curvature diameter and inclination angle were 200–800 kg/(m2·s), 0.3–0.9, 10–20 kW/m2, 2–4 MPa, 6–14 mm, 1.6–2.4 m and 6–14°, respectively. The results demonstrate that methane/ethane mixture has the best heat transfer and the smallest pressure drop among three mixtures. At static condition, as the vapor quality and mass flux increase and the saturation pressure and hydraulic diameter decrease, there are evident increases in heat transfer and pressure drop, whereas the impacts of curvature diameter, inclination angle and heat flux on them are insignificant. Meanwhile, the heaving motion affects pressure drop and heat transfer and makes it show better overall heat transfer performances, where the comprehensive heat transfer factors (CHFs) of 83.33% data points are more than 1. Further, the heaving effects increase with the increasing heaving amplitude and the decreasing heaving cycle.

Recently, multi-split air source heat pumps (ASHPs) have been used increasingly for space heating in cold winter. When it operates in frosting environment, periodic defrosting is necessary to maintain a high system performance. However, researches on its defrosting were few due to its high capital and complicated controls. To solve its fundamental problem of insufficient heat available during defrosting, a novel reverse-cycle defrosting (NRCD) method based on the phase change thermal storage has been developed. In this paper, comparative experiments using both standard reverse-cycle defrosting (SRCD) method and NRCD method were carried out on a multi-split ASHP unit with a phase change material heat exchanger (PCM-HE) acting as energy accumulator during heating operation and heat source during defrosting operation. Experimental results suggested that when using the NRCD method, the system performances, such as suction pressure and temperature, defrosting and heat-resumption durations, COP during defrosting operation can be effectively improved.

When an air source heat pump (ASHP) unit operates for space heating at a frosting environment, periodic defrosting is necessary to maintain a high system performance. To defrost efficiently, it is necessary to find an effective defrosting control method. In this paper, an experiment was carried out on an ASHP unit with a capillary tube as a throttle device, under simulated frosting and defrosting conditions using time control defrosting method, and the experimental results are firstly presented. Secondly, a novel defrosting control method based on the degree of refrigerant superheat (DS) is reported. To validate the novel defrosting control method, a further experiment was conducted on another ASHP unit with an electronic expansion valve (EEV) as a throttle device, under simulated frosting and defrosting conditions. The experimental results demonstrated that when applying the novel defrosting control method, defrosting was initiated before the operating performances of ASHP unit rapidly deteriorated, which was more reasonable.

This paper reports a double-stage coupled heat pumps (DSCHP) heating system, which couples air source heat pump (ASHP) and water source heat pump (WSHP) together. The system is presented for the first time in open literature with the objective to improve the working condition and heating performance of the ASHP under cold environment. A practical project in Beijing firstly installed this system and field test has been performed for one month. The test results indicate that the DSCHP system can be smoothly and efficiently used for heating in cold regions. Compared with the traditional ASHP heating system, the operating characteristics of the DSCHP heating system are greatly improved, demonstrating that the system can offer considerable application potential in cold regions.

Grey forecasting has found applications in finance, social science, economics, etc. However, its applications in air conditioning and refrigeration have not been reported. This paper reports on a study where grey forecasting method is applied to predicting the operating energy performance for an air cooled water chiller (ACWC) units, so as to demonstrate this forecasting approach can be applied to building Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) installations. In this paper, a brief introduction of the background and fundamentals of grey forecasting is firstly presented. This is followed by reporting the application of grey forecasting to an ACWC unit installed in Northern China for predicting its operating energy performance using the variation ratio of coefficient of performance (ΔCOP). The predicted values of ΔCOP agreed well with the measured ΔCOP, demonstrating that grey forecasting may be used for predicting the operating energy performance of an ACWC unit with a high accuracy. Finally, the potential use of grey forecasting in fault detection and diagnostics (FDD) or energy management systems (EMSs) for air conditioning and refrigeration systems is assessed, and the comparison with the prediction method based on artificial neural network (ANN) discussed.
