Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) was grafted on the surface of ultrafine silica beads through coupling reaction of semi-telechelic poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAm) and the silica beads. The synthetic route included the preparation of semi-telechelic PNIPAm with triethoxysilan group at the polymer chain end and the coupling reaction of the semi-telechelic PNIPAm with silica particles. The characterizations by infrared spectrometry, differential scanning calorimetry, scanning electron microscopy, and thermogravimetry analysis confirmed the formation of core-shell composites of silica-PNIPAm. The composites were thermo-sensitive and were used as a packing material in high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) for separating organic compound mixtures. The result indicated that satisfactory separations could be achieved by controlling the column temperature. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
