Abstract

Elemental analysis of the epidermis of tea leaves was performed using the micro-beam particle-induced X-ray emission (micro-PIXE) method. The ratios of the X-ray yields of silicon (Si), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), and manganese (Mn) to that of aluminum (Al) in the cell wall of epidermal cells of tea leaves were determined. The ratio of Si to Al X-ray yields agreed within a range of 11% in the four samples measured in this study. On the other hand, the ratio of the X-ray yields of K, Ca, and Mn to Al varied from 41% to 87%. This result suggests that Al forms compounds with Si in tea leaves. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The Zr and Mo removal from HLLW is the current issue for repeated usage of the CMPO/SiO2-P-packed column. The adsorbability of the 2-mm-sized HDEHP/SiO2-P adsorbent, which was prepared by fabricating a SiO2 particle from the vibration cutting method and adapting a new polymerization method, was evaluated by the batch-wise adsorption experiment. In spite of the impregnation ratio of the HDEHP extractant, the extraction of Zr and Mo ions from the simulated HLLW was achieved but lanthanide ions e.g., Nd and Gd were also extracted as a minor component. Such unusual adsorption behavior of lanthanide ions could be only provided by accurate, sensitive and reliable micro-PIXE analysis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The radiation-induced releasing of the liquid-core of the microcapsules was improved using H2O2, which produced O2 generation of H2O2 after irradiation. Further, we tested whether these microcapsules enhanced the antitumor effects and decreased the adverse effects in vivo in C3He/J mice. The capsules were produced by spraying a mixture of 3.0% hyaluronic acid, 2.0% alginate, 3.0% H2O2, and 0.3 mmol of carboplatin on a mixture of 0.3 molFeCl2 and 0.15 molCaCl2. The microcapsules were subcutaneously injected into MM46 tumors that had been inoculated in the left hind legs of C3He/J mice. The radiotherapy comprised tumor irradiation with 10 Gy or 20 Gy 60Co. The antitumor effect of the microcapsules was tested by measuring tumor size and monitoring tumor growth. Three types of adverse effects were considered: fuzzy hair, loss of body weight, and death. The size of the capsule size was 23 ± 2.4 µmɸ and that of the liquid core, 20.2 ± 2.2 µmɸ. The injected microcapsules localized drugs around the tumor. The production of O2 by radiation increased the release of carboplatin from the microcapsules. The antitumor effects of radiation, carboplatin, and released oxygen were synergistic. Localization of the carboplatin decreased its adverse effects. However, the H2O2 caused ulceration of the skin in the treated area. The use of our microcapsules enhanced the antitumor effects and decreased the adverse effects of carboplatin. Abstract

Rat basophilic leukaemia cells (RBL-2H3) were analyzed by in air micro-PIXE analysis to investigate the relationship between the distribution of dements and histamine release in immune system RBL-2H3 cells were sensitized with monoclonal immunoglobuline E (IgE) and stimulated with antigen In the stimulated cells, it is understood that the level of Ca2+ increases in cytoplasm and then the degranulation or the release of chemical mediators occur. In this study, stimulated RBL-2H3 cells with antigen and control cells were analyzed. After the stimulation, the Na in the cells was increased. Moreover some stimulated cells showed the characteristic distribution of sulfur that is not accompany with the distribution of phosphorus. Abstract

Since biological or biomedical studies by nuclear microscopy are limited by irradiation damage, we developed an in-air system in order to cool down the biological samples by convection. The behavior of the beam extraction window is an important parameter of our system. Then, we investigated the behavior of a polyethylene teraphtalate (PET) thin-film used as beam extraction window during in-air irradiation by STIM (Scanning Transmission Ion Microscopy) and RBS (Rutherford Backscattering Spectrometry) methods.
