This study aimed to assess the knowledge and awareness regarding the possible predictive variables affecting the recurrence of an oral mucocele. An observational, cross-sectional study was designed which consisted of a structured KAP questionnaire including 15 questions collected from 144 dental practitioners in different geographical areas. Out of the total 144 patients, 17 (11.8%) practitioners were not aware of the recurrence of mucoceles occurring more commonly in patients younger (< 30 years) of age whereas 42(29.4%) dental practitioners were not aware of a higher rate of recurrences presenting in the first month postoperatively (0-6 months). The responses of this particular survey revealed that not all dental practitioners have a good knowledge of the variables responsible for the recurrence of oral mucoceles. Patients with oral mucocele should be more carefully informed of its possible recurrence, especially when it is found on the ventral surface of the tongue or in a younger population. Therefore, if these predictive variables are well known by the operating dental practitioner, information regarding any probability of a recurrence and any subsequent reoperation can be conveyed to the patient.
