PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of electronic and paper-based standardized nursing care plans (SNCPs) use on quality of nurses’ documentation. METHODS: Using quasi-experimental design, two wards were grouped into electronic and paper-based wards. Nurses were trained to use electronic- and paperbased SNCPs for care-planning and documentation. Data was collected before, 3, and 6 months postintervention and analyzed with SPSS version 20. FINDINGS: There was improvement in documentation quality in the two wards after introducing SNCPs with higher quality scores in the electronic ward postintervention. CONCLUSION: Providing SNCPs in electronic and paper formats is critical to improving nursing documentation. IMPLICATION FOR NURSING PRACTICE: Adequate training and support for nurses are needed for successful implementation of SNCPs in electronic health records (EHRs) in developing nations. Purpose: The aim of this paper was to analyze and evaluate the middle‐range theory, emancipatory nursing praxis (ENP): a theory of social justice in nursing. Methods: Peterson and Bredow's method was utilized to complete the theory evaluation. The theory was evaluated systematically to ensure the appropriateness of application for research in nursing education and transforming nursing students into social justice allies. Findings: The ENP theory has not been widely used since its introduction in 2017, although it is even more relevant today after the revelation of profound societal inequities during the pandemic. The theory lacks testing and empirical indicators for utilization in nursing practice. Conclusion: ENP addresses the mandate from the American Association of Colleges of Nursing for nurse educators to foster the development of students as social justice leaders and competent caregivers across the life span. This theory provides a framework to apply in nursing education to improve the professional competency in social justice and disparities. However, further research is needed to develop tools to measure outcomes and generalizability. Implications for nursing practice: ENP middle‐range theory could support nursing educators and nursing programs to develop learning strategies and curricula to facilitate nursing students' knowledge and application in social justice advocates, allies, and leaders, thus improving individual, community, and global health outcomes. Purpose: The aim of this umbrella review was to determine the most effective nursing interventions for the prevention and management of suicidal behavior. In order to do so, the review identifies interventions from the Nursing Interventions Classifications taxonomy with evidence to this end. Methods: A systematic search was conducted for systematic reviews included in the PubMed, CINAHL, Cochrane, Scopus, Web of Knowledge, and Joanna Briggs Institute databases between January 1, 2011 and May 1, 2020. Findings: The review is made up of 21 systematic reviews. In order to carefully analyze the interventions described, these were coded into categories, grouping the interventions into those based on psychological therapy, interventions related to pharmacotherapy, interventions related to the professional relationship between health professional and patient, and interventions aimed at the general public. Conclusions: Nursing interventions for suicide risk management are prevalent in the scientific literature and are shown to be effective for patients with suicidal ideation or suicide attempts. Prevention and treatment of suicidal behavior require the provision of coping tools, behavioral interventions that directly address suicidal thoughts and behaviors, and support through therapeutic partnerships, among others. Implications for nursing practice: This paper synthesizes the most current evidence on the most effective Nursing Interventions Classifications interventions for the treatment and prevention of suicidal behavior. It provides nursing practitioners with a comprehensive review of the therapeutic interventions with the best evidence and is useful for the development of clinical guidelines and protocols, as well as for the development of health policies and plans. Purpose: The aim of this study was a clinical validation of the NANDA‐I nursing diagnosis "Impaired Resilience (00210)" in people under fertility treatment and determination of the sensitivity, specificity, and predictive value of the defining characteristics. Methods: A cross‐sectional study was conducted between September 2019 and June 2020. A total of 104 patients were recruited through fertility‐related websites, and they answered an online questionnaire after giving informed consent. The Rasch model was used for statistical analysis. The study was approved by the Ethics Committee. Findings: The "Impaired Resilience (00210)" had a prevalence of 15.4% in the sample, and seven defining characteristics confirmed as representative are "decreased interest in vocational activities," "depression," "impaired health status," "ineffective coping strategies," "low self‐esteem," "renewed elevation of distress," and "social isolation." No item showed differential item functioning. "Renewed elevation of distress" and "low self‐esteem" were the most sensitive defining characteristics and had the highest negative predictive value. "Shame" was the most specific one. Conclusions: The nursing diagnosis "Impaired Resilience (00210)" was validated, and results may improve its accuracy in people going through fertility treatment. Implications for nursing practice: This paper contributes by raising knowledge regarding NANDA‐I nursing diagnosis and enhancing the quality of nurses' critical judgment and clinical reasoning. A more effective assessment will allow early recognition of patients struggling with adversity during fertility treatment and enhance a nursing resilience approach in the reproductive field. Purpose: This paper aims to clarify the concept of reflective practice in nursing by using Rodgers' evolutionary method of concept analysis. Data sources: Literature and references on the concept of reflective practice were obtained from two databases: Scopus and Nursing and Allied health database. Peer‐reviewed articles published in English language between 2011‐2021 that included the terms 'reflection' and/or 'reflective practice' in the title were selected. Seminal pieces of work were also considered in this analysis. A total of 23 works were included. Most of the selected works addressed the concept of reflective practice in nursing education or nursing practice. Data synthesis: The data analysis integrated the stages identified in Rodgers' method of concept analysis to analyze the concept of reflective practice. Analysis of selected works provided an understanding of common surrogates, antecedents, attributes, and consequences of the concept of reflective practice. Conclusions: Reflective practice is a cognitive skill that demands conscious effort to look at a situation with an awareness of own beliefs, values, and practice enabling nurses to learn from experiences, incorporate that learning in improving patient care outcomes. It also leads to knowledge development in nursing. Considering the current circumstances of the COVID‐19 pandemic, this paper identifies the need for nurses to go beyond reflection‐on‐action and also include reflection‐in‐action and reflection‐for‐action as part of their practice. Implications for nursing practice: This analysis identifies the need for future nursing researchers to develop reflective models or strategies that promote reflection among nurses and nursing students before, during, and after the clinical experiences. Aim: The aim of the paper is to compare the quality of nursing documentation in the Children's Hospital before and after the NANDA‐I nursing diagnoses training. Methods: Research employed the interventional study design, and pre–post study design. Before and after the NANDA‐I nursing diagnoses training, 50 nursing records were analyzed in the interventional pre–post study, using D‐Catch instrument. Results: The most often documented problem‐centered nursing diagnosis before training was anxiety and after the training, hyperthermia. The most common risk diagnoses before and after the training was risk of infection. Before the training, one health promotion diagnosis was determined in the nursing records, and after the training the number increased to four. The highest value was given to readability of the nursing documentation both before and after the training. The lowest score before the training was given to the quality determiners of the accurate nursing diagnoses and after the training given to the determiners of the results' quantity. The sum score of documenting the nursing interventions was the most inconsistent before the training and after the training. The most consistent was the readability of the nursing records before and after the training. Statistically significant differences in the improvement of quality were revealed in all areas except for the readability of the nursing documentation and the quantity of nursing assessment. Conclusions: The results of the study revealed that following the training, the quality of nursing documentation improved, the wording of the nursing diagnoses improved, and the number of accurate nursing diagnoses had increased. Implications for Nursing Practice: Results of the research provide an overview of the importance of the training in improving the quality of nursing documentation and aid the educators in planning the trainings, focusing more on the challenges in the documentation. Purpose: This systematic review aims to identify factors influencing exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) up to 6 months. Methods: The databases including PubMed, MEDLINE, CINAHL, Scopus, EMBASE, CNKI, and WANFANG were searched to retrieve studies. Quantitative research were extracted and the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews were followed. Critical appraisal checklists of Joanna Briggs Institute were used to evaluate the quality of the included studies. Findings: A total of 16 papers were eligible for this systematic review, comprising five cohort studies and 11 cross‐sectional studies. Moderate to strong evidence supported that 6‐month exclusive breastfeeding is affected by maternal working status, breastfeeding knowledge, delivery mode, parity, perception of insufficient human milk, mothers' infant feeding attitude, breastfeeding self‐efficacy, and intention. Conclusions: Factors influencing EBF up to 6 months postpartum play a key role in promoting mothers' health and reducing diseases in their infants. Implications for nursing practice: Interventions based on related factors should be developed and taken into practice to assist mothers in exclusive breastfeeding for up to 6 months. Purpose: This paper aims to clarify the concept of perceived health from the perspective of rural adults in China. Methods: Walker and Avant's concept analysis was applied. Findings: Perceived health from rural adults in China is a subjective assessment of their health status, which is deeply affected by Chinese traditional culture and being in a rural environment. Conclusions: Most rural adults in China could perceive their health as good or poor, however, rural areas have disadvantages in health care, geographical location, and educational resources compared with urban counterparts, which may lead to some unscientific health attitudes and lifestyles and hinder their healthcare‐seeking behaviors. Implication for Nursing Practice: To help nurses understand better the concept of perceived health with the rural background, which is different from urban areas. Perceived health provides rich information resources for nurses to carry out holistic care, and to lead rural adults in China to form a correct and positive attitude and lifestyle as possible. Purpose: To provide guidance to nurses caring for families with COVID‐19, we developed linkages using interoperable standardized nursing terminologies: NANDA International (NANDA‐I) nursing diagnoses, Nursing Interventions Classification (NIC), and Nursing Outcomes Classification (NOC). In addition, we wanted to identify gaps in the terminologies and potential new nursing diagnoses, outcomes, and interventions for future development related to nurse roles in family care during a pandemic. Methods: Using a consensus process, seven nurse experts created the linkages focused on families during the COVID‐19 pandemic using the following steps: (1) creating an initial list of potential nursing diagnoses, (2) selecting and categorizing outcomes that aligned with all components of each nursing diagnosis selected, and (3) identifying relevant nursing interventions. Findings: We identified a total of seven NANDA‐I nursing diagnoses as the basis for the linkage work. These are distributed in three NANDA‐I Domains and based in the psychosocial dimension of the Nursing Care in Response to Pandemics model. Eighty‐nine different NOC outcomes were identified to guide care based on the nursing diagnoses, and 54 different NIC interventions were suggested as possible interventions. Fifteen new proposed concepts were identified for future development across the three classifications. Conclusions: The linkages of nursing diagnoses, outcomes, and interventions provide a guide to enhance nursing practice and care documentation that could quantify the impact of nursing care to patient outcomes for families at risk for or infected by COVID‐19. Implications for Nursing Practice: NANDA‐I, NOC, and NIC linkages identified in this paper provide resources to support clinical decisions and guide critical thinking for nurses encountering care needs of families with COVID‐19. Infertility can be devastating for some couples. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate a translation of knowledge and nursing theory‐based practice regarding nursing care of couples experiencing infertility through a case study approach. It is important to consider the translation of knowledge to probable scenarios so that we may have opportunities to be better prepared when addressing such situations in actual nursing practice. Data sources include current literature, theoretical perspectives on power as knowing participation in change and nursing classifications. Data synthesis is illustrated within the context of a simulated case study of a couple experiencing unexplained secondary infertility through the application of a theory‐based practice methodology, health patterning. The authors conclude that the theoretical perspectives of unitary science and the theory of power as knowing participation in change can be applied in practice. Theory‐based practice methodologies such as health patterning offer an opportunity to provide holistic care to couples experiencing infertility. Using these theoretical perspectives, nurses can engage with couples expressing a readiness for enhanced power for a desired change. Nursing implications include the value of theory‐based practice and the essential view of couples as unique human beings. In addition, it demonstrates the ongoing usefulness of case study approaches for nursing education as vehicles to enhance awareness of unitary experiences, updates to clinical care, and demonstration of the application of theory to practice. PURPOSE: To analyze and synthetize the existing scientific literature in relation to the nursing diagnosis disturbed thought processes (DTPs) (00130). METHODS: An integrative review was developed, identifying relevant papers through a search of international and Spanish databases and the examination of key manuals. FINDINGS: Theoretical papers propose modifications for the nursing diagnosis DTPs. Most of the research papers offer data about its frequency in different clinical settings. CONCLUSIONS: There exists an interest in the nursing diagnosis DTPs. However, the available evidence is not very extensive and further work is necessary in order to refine this nursing diagnosis. Purpose: To provide guidance to nurses caring for individuals with COVID‐19, we developed linkages using interoperable standardized nursing terminologies: NANDA International (NANDA‐I) nursing diagnoses, Nursing Interventions Classification (NIC), and Nursing Outcomes Classification (NOC). We also identified potential new NANDA‐I nursing diagnoses, NOC outcomes, and NIC interventions for future development related to nurses' role during a pandemic. Methods: Using a consensus process, seven nurse experts created the linkages for individuals during the COVID 19 pandemic using the following steps: (a) creating an initial list of potential nursing diagnoses, (b) selecting and categorizing outcomes that aligned with all components of each nursing diagnosis selected, and (c) identifying relevant nursing interventions. Findings: A total of 16 NANDA‐I nursing diagnoses were identified as the foundation for the linkage work, organized in two dimensions, physiological and psychosocial. A total of 171 different NOC outcomes were identified to guide care based on the nursing diagnoses and 96 NIC interventions were identified as suggested interventions. A total of 13 proposed concepts were identified for potential future development across the three classifications. Conclusions: The linkages of nursing diagnoses, outcomes, and interventions developed in this article provide a guide to enhance nursing practice and determine the effectiveness of nurses' contribution to patient outcomes for individuals at risk for or infected by COVID‐19. Implications for nursing practice: NANDA‐I, NOC, and NIC linkages identified in this paper are an important example of the value of using standardized nursing terminologies to guide and document nursing care. When included in electronic health record databases and used widely, the data generated from the care plans can be used to create new knowledge about how to better improve outcomes for patients with COVID‐19. AIM: To validate the nursing diagnosis risk for unstable blood glucose level in adult/elderly patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. METHOD: Study Methodological was used in this article. The validation process was carried out using the model proposed by Hoskins (1989). RESULTS: The risk factors ineffective medication management and high carbohydrate and lipid food intake achieved a concordance index greater than 85%. CONCLUSION: This study contributed to the identification of new risk factors, at risk populations, and important associated conditions. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING PRACTICE: It is believed that the findings reported in this paper can be used to improve clinical protocols for the prevention of unstable blood glucose, in addition to contributions to the advancement of nursing science. The purpose of this paper is to provide a description of bonding as a concept using Walker and Avant's (2005) concept analysis guidelines. Data sources include dictionaries and online health databases. Data synthesis revealed frequent misuse of the term attachment to represent the concept of bonding. There are distinct differences between attachment and bonding and the current nursing diagnosis Risk for impaired attachment more accurately represents the concept of bonding. OBJECTIVE: To systematically retrieve, critique, and synthesize patients' human responses about living with infertility and identify possible related nursing diagnoses according to NANDA‐I. METHODS: Systematic review of qualitative nursing studies. FINDINGS: A total of 39 papers were included, 49 human responses, and 77 potential infertility‐related nursing diagnoses were identified across three themes. Main foci matching nursing diagnosis were related to spiritual well‐being, spiritual distress, and resilience. CONCLUSIONS: Patients respond to infertility in a variety of ways and this raises the need for a more effective, holistic, and accurate nursing diagnosis. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: The accuracy of the nursing diagnosis is critical in raising the quality of the nursing process and in meeting infertile patients' circumstances and care expectations. PURPOSE: Much of our practice as nurses is predicated on the development of a trusting relationship between patient and nurse. Through this, the nurse and patient can identify the issues which are challenging health, the desired outcomes of care and the interventions that will be enacted, by both parties, in order to achieve these outcomes. Often, though, both nurses and patients find it difficult to put aside the relative roles that they play in health care and the level of engagement that is possible may not be achieved. METHODS: In this theoretical paper, I will explore the importance of human engagement to nursing practice, drawing, in a reflective and personal manner, on experiences gained throughout my 30 years of providing nursing service. CONCLUSIONS: Human engagement is central to the practice of nursing, but if engagement is to be valid, it must involve a dialogic transaction between the nurse and patient such that both parties are changed and there is a commitment to journey together, as humans, in the hope of finding positive outcomes for both. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: In a time of increasing tendency to build boundaries between people and communities, it is imperative that nursing does not lose its most essential quality: the coming together of human beings in dialogic engagement. OBJECTIVE: This article describes the adequacy of the Q methodology as a new option for the validation of nursing diagnoses related to subjective foci. METHODS: Discussion paper about the characteristics of the Q methodology. FINDINGS: This method has been used in nursing research particularly related to subjective concepts and includes both a quantitative and qualitative dimension. CONCLUSIONS: The Q methodology seems to be an adequate and innovative method for the clinical validation of nursing diagnoses. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: The validation of nursing diagnoses related to subjective foci using the Q methodology could improve the level of evidence and provide nurses with clinical indicators for clinical reasoning and for the planning of effective interventions. OBJECTIVE: The paper proposes new diagnoses on child development (CD) for NANDA International. METHODS: The study followed the recommended steps of Developmental Processes for NANDA International Nursing Diagnoses. It was a secondary analysis study on the findings of a concept analysis study on CD. RESULTS: A proposal of labels and components of three diagnoses: “Delayed child development,” “Risk for delayed child development,” and “Readiness for enhanced child development.” CONCLUSIONS: The proposed diagnoses represent all the complexity of CD. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING PRACTICE: The proposed diagnoses can support nurses in the development of a comprehensive care plan on the health of children. Purpose The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the level of maturity of the concept of health in the nursing discipline. Method The four principles of Morse and colleagues were used to evaluate the level of maturity of the health concept-epistemological, logical, pragmatical, and linguistical. Findings This evaluation suggests that the concept of health in nursing is immature, defined inconsistently, and with different instruments. Conclusion Health is a central concept for nursing. Additional concept development and clarification are needed. Practice Implications For the concept of health to be conceptualized, it is important that nurses have consensus regarding the definition of health. The nursing discipline should define health in a manner that is consistent with its philosophical presuppositions. Objective Discussion of the 'Impaired Comfort' nursing diagnosis. Methods Discussion paper based on the authors' ongoing PhD research about the development of comfort as a complex intervention. Findings When the patient has impaired comfort, the nursing intervention should be specific to the etiological factor. Some arguments are raised about impaired comfort as a nursing diagnosis and the discussion is led about the possibility of the referred diagnosis being considered a syndrome. Conclusions New proposals are presented for the nursing classification based on theoretical knowledge development and current scientific evidence. Implications for Nursing The results can contribute to better decision-making and clinical reasoning, namely in terms of the nursing process, and contribute to safer, rational, efficient, and effective nursing care. Purpose To identify the interventions provided by advanced practice nurses to older people in different contexts with standardized nursing language. Data Source This is a qualitative study. Content analysis was applied to the texts of experimental research papers about advanced practice nursing for older people. Deductive coding through the Nursing Intervention Classification was carried out. Data Synthesis Seventy-three interventions codified with the Nursing Intervention Classification were extracted, mainly related to the behavioral and healthcare system domains, which could be explained due to the need for improving the psychosocial functioning and self-care of these patients to preserve their quality of life. Aim To examine the effects of a web-based nursing process documentation system on the stress and anxiety of nursing students during their clinical practice. Methods A quasi-experimental design was employed. The experimental group ( n = 110) used a web-based nursing process documentation program for their case reports as part of assignments for a clinical practicum, whereas the control group ( n = 106) used traditional paper-based case reports. Stress and anxiety levels were measured with a numeric rating scale before, 2 weeks after, and 4 weeks after using the web-based nursing process documentation program during a clinical practicum. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t tests, chi-square tests, and repeated-measures analyses of variance. Results Nursing students who used the web-based nursing process documentation program showed significant lower levels of stress and anxiety than the control group. Conclusion A web-based nursing process documentation program could be used to reduce the stress and anxiety of nursing students during clinical practicum, which ultimately would benefit nursing students by increasing satisfaction with and effectiveness of clinical practicum.
