Spiking neural membrane systems (SN P systems) are a class of bio-inspired models inspired by the activities and connectivity of neurons. Extensive studies have been made on SN P systems with synchronization-based communication, while further efforts are needed for the systems with rhythm-based communication. In this work, we design an asynchronous SN P system with resonant connections where all the enabled neurons in the same group connected by resonant connections should instantly produce spikes with the same rhythm. In the designed system, each of the three modules implements one type of the three operations associated with the edge detection of digital images, and they collaborate each other through the resonant connections. An algorithm called EDSNP for edge detection is proposed to simulate the working of the designed asynchronous SN P system. A quantitative analysis of EDSNP and the related methods for edge detection had been conducted to evaluate the performance of EDSNP. The performance of the EDSNP in processing the testing images is superior to the compared methods, based on the quantitative metrics of accuracy, error rate, mean square error, peak signal-to-noise ratio and true positive rate. Parkinson's Disease (PD) is the second most prevalent neurodegenerative disorder among adults. Although its triggers are still not clear, they may be due to a combination of different types of biomarkers measured through medical imaging, metabolomics, proteomics or genetics, among others. In this context, we have proposed a Computer-Aided Diagnosis (CAD) system that combines structural and functional imaging data from subjects in Parkinson's Progression Markers Initiative dataset by means of an Ensemble Learning methodology trained to identify and penalize input sources with low classification rates and/ or high-variability. This proposal improves results published in recent years and provides an accurate solution not only from the point of view of image preprocessing (including a comparison between different intensity preservation techniques), but also in terms of dimensionality reduction methods (Isomap). In addition, we have also introduced a bagging classification schema for scenarios with unbalanced data. As shown by our results, the CAD proposal is able to detect PD with 9 6. 4 8 % of balanced accuracy, and opens up the possibility of combining any number of input data sources relevant for PD. The prevalence of dementia is currently increasing worldwide. This syndrome produces a deterioration in cognitive function that cannot be reverted. However, an early diagnosis can be crucial for slowing its progress. The Clock Drawing Test (CDT) is a widely used paper-and-pencil test for cognitive assessment in which an individual has to manually draw a clock on a paper. There are a lot of scoring systems for this test and most of them depend on the subjective assessment of the expert. This study proposes a computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) system based on artificial intelligence (AI) methods to analyze the CDT and obtain an automatic diagnosis of cognitive impairment (CI). This system employs a preprocessing pipeline in which the clock is detected, centered and binarized to decrease the computational burden. Then, the resulting image is fed into a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) to identify the informative patterns within the CDT drawings that are relevant for the assessment of the patient's cognitive status. Performance is evaluated in a real context where patients with CI and controls have been classified by clinical experts in a balanced sample size of 3 2 8 2 drawings. The proposed method provides an accuracy of 7 5. 6 5 % in the binary case-control classification task, with an AUC of 0. 8 3. These results are indeed relevant considering the use of the classic version of the CDT. The large size of the sample suggests that the method proposed has a high reliability to be used in clinical contexts and demonstrates the suitability of CAD systems in the CDT assessment process. Explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) methods are applied to identify the most relevant regions during classification. Finding these patterns is extremely helpful to understand the brain damage caused by CI. Single image super-resolution (SISR) aims to obtain a high-resolution output from one low-resolution image. Currently, deep learning-based SISR approaches have been widely discussed in medical image processing, because of their potential to achieve high-quality, high spatial resolution images without the cost of additional scans. However, most existing methods are designed for scale-specific SR tasks and are unable to generalize over magnification scales. In this paper, we propose an approach for medical image arbitrary-scale super-resolution (MIASSR), in which we couple meta-learning with generative adversarial networks (GANs) to super-resolve medical images at any scale of magnification in (1 , 4 ]. Compared to state-of-the-art SISR algorithms on single-modal magnetic resonance (MR) brain images (OASIS-brains) and multi-modal MR brain images (BraTS), MIASSR achieves comparable fidelity performance and the best perceptual quality with the smallest model size. We also employ transfer learning to enable MIASSR to tackle SR tasks of new medical modalities, such as cardiac MR images (ACDC) and chest computed tomography images (COVID-CT). Thus, MIASSR has the potential to become a new foundational pre-/post-processing step in clinical image analysis tasks such as reconstruction, image quality enhancement, and segmentation. Microelectrode Arrays (MEA) are devices for long term electrophysiological recording of extracellular spontaneous or evocated activities on in vitro neuron culture. This work proposes and develops a framework for quantitative and morphological analysis of neuron cultures on MEAs, by processing their corresponding images, acquired by fluorescence microscopy. The neurons are segmented from the fluorescence channel images using a combination of segmentation by thresholding, watershed transform, and object classification. The positioning of microelectrodes is obtained from the transmitted light channel images using the circular Hough transform. The proposed method was applied to images of dissociated culture of rat dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neuronal cells. The morphological and topological quantitative analysis carried out produced information regarding the state of culture, such as population count, neuron-to-neuron and neuron-to-microelectrode distances, soma morphologies, neuron sizes, neuron and microelectrode spatial distributions. Most of the analysis of microscopy images taken from neuronal cultures on MEA only consider simple qualitative analysis. Also, the proposed framework aims to standardize the image processing and to compute quantitative useful measures for integrated image-signal studies and further computational simulations. As results show, the implemented microelectrode identification method is robust and so are the implemented neuron segmentation and classification one (with a correct segmentation rate up to 84%). The quantitative information retrieved by the method is highly relevant to assist the integrated signal-image study of recorded electrophysiological signals as well as the physical aspects of the neuron culture on MEA. Although the experiments deal with DRG cell images, cortical and hippocampal cell images could also be processed with small adjustments in the image processing parameter estimation. The brain is characterized by performing many diverse processing tasks ranging from elaborate processes such as pattern recognition, memory or decision making to more simple functionalities such as linear filtering in image processing. Understanding the mechanisms by which the brain is able to produce such a different range of cortical operations remains a fundamental problem in neuroscience. Here we show a study about which processes are related to chaotic and synchronized states based on the study of in-silico implementation of Stochastic Spiking Neural Networks (SSNN). The measurements obtained reveal that chaotic neural ensembles are excellent transmission and convolution systems since mutual information between signals is minimized. At the same time, synchronized cells (that can be understood as ordered states of the brain) can be associated to more complex nonlinear computations. In this sense, we experimentally show that complex and quick pattern recognition processes arise when both synchronized and chaotic states are mixed. These measurements are in accordance with in vivo observations related to the role of neural synchrony in pattern recognition and to the speed of the real biological process. We also suggest that the high-level adaptive mechanisms of the brain that are the Hebbian and non-Hebbian learning rules can be understood as processes devoted to generate the appropriate clustering of both synchronized and chaotic ensembles. The measurements obtained from the hardware implementation of different types of neural systems suggest that the brain processing can be governed by the superposition of these two complementary states with complementary functionalities (nonlinear processing for synchronized states and information convolution and parallelization for chaotic). Image classification is a challenging problem in organizing a large image database. However, an effective method for such an objective is still under investigation. A method based on wavelet analysis to extract features for image classification is presented in this paper. After an image is decomposed by wavelet, the statistics of its features can be obtained by the distribution of histograms of wavelet coefficients, which are respectively projected onto two orthogonal axes, i.e., x and y directions. Therefore, the nodes of tree representation of images can be represented by the distribution. The high level features are described in low dimensional space including 16 attributes so that the computational complexity is significantly decreased. 2800 images derived from seven categories are used in experiments. Half of the images were used for training neural network and the other images used for testing. The features extracted by wavelet analysis and the conventional features are used in the experiments to prove the efficacy of the proposed method. The classification rate on the training data set with wavelet analysis is up to 91%, and the classification rate on the testing data set reaches 89%. The complex-valued backpropagation algorithm has been widely used in fields of dealing with telecommunications, speech recognition and image processing with Fourier transformation. However, the local minima problem usually occurs in the process of learning. To solve this problem and to speed up the learning process, we propose a modified error function by adding a term to the conventional error function, which is corresponding to the hidden layer error. In this paper, we propose a neural-network approach for visual authorization, which is an application of visual cryptography (VC). The scheme contains a key-share and a set of user-shares. The administrator owns the key-share, and each user owns a user-share issued by the administrator from the user-share set. The shares in the user-share set are visually indistinguishable, i.e. they have the same pictorial meaning. However, the stacking of the key-share with different user-shares will reveal significantly different images. Therefore, the administrator (in fact, only the administrator) can visually recognize the authority assigned to a particular user by viewing the information appearing in the superposed image of key-share and user-share. This approach is completely different from traditional VC approaches. The salient features include: (i) the access schemes are described using a set of graytone images, and (ii) the codebooks to fulfil them are not required; and (iii) the size of share images is the same as the size of target image. This paper presents a new generation 128×128 Focal-Plane Analog Programmable Array Processor -FPAPAP, from a system level perspective. It has been manufactured in a 0.35μm standard digital 1P-5M CMOS technology. It has been designed to achieve the high-speed and moderate-accuracy -8b- requirements of most real time -early-vision applications. External data interchange and control are completely digital. The chip contains close to four million transistors, 90% of them working in analog mode. It achieves peak computing values of 0.33TeraOPS while keeping power consumption at reasonable limits -82.5GOPS/W. Preliminary experimental results are also provided in the paper. An effective image retrieval system is developed based on the use of neural networks (NNs). It takes advantages of association ability of multilayer NNs as matching engines which calculate similarities between a user's drawn sketch and the stored images. The NNs memorize pixel information of every size-reduced image (thumbnail) in the learning phase. In the retrieval phase, pixel information of a user's drawn rough sketch is inputted to the learned NNs and they estimate the candidates. Thus the system can retrieve candidates quickly and correctly by utilizing the parallelism and association ability of NNs. In addition, the system has learning capability: it can automatically extract features of a user's drawn sketch during the retrieval phase and can store them as additional information to improve the performance. The software for querying, including efficient graphical user interfaces, has been implemented and tested. Determining the structure of data without prior knowledge of the number of clusters or any information about their composition is a problem of interest in many fields, such as image analysis, astrophysics, biology, etc. Partitioning a set of n patterns in a p-dimensional feature space must be done such that those in a given cluster are more similar to each other than the rest. As there are approximately [formula] possible ways of partitioning the patterns among K clusters, finding the best solution is very hard when n is large. The search space is increased when we have no a priori number of partitions. Although the self-organizing feature map (SOM) can be used to visualize clusters, the automation of knowledge discovery by SOM is a difficult task. This paper proposes region-based image processing methods to post-processing the U-matrix obtained after the unsupervised learning performed by SOM. Mathematical morphology is applied to identify regions of neurons that are similar. The number of regions and their labels are automatically found and they are related to the number of clusters in a multivariate data set. New data can be classified by labeling it according to the best match neuron. The process of eliminating the color errors from the gamut mismatch, resolution conversion, and nonlinearity between scanner and printer is usually recognized as an essential issue of color reproduction. This paper presents a new formulation based on the generalized inverse plant control for the color error reduction process. In our formulation, the printer input and scanner output correspond to the input and output of a system plant, respectively. Obviously, if the printer input equals the scanner output, then there are no color errors involved in the entire system. In other words, the plant becomes an identity system. To achieve this goal, a plant generalized inverse should be identified and added to the original system. Since the system of a combination of both scanner and printer is highly nonlinear, CMAC-based neural networks, which have the capability to learn arbitrary nonlinearity, are applied to identify the plant generalized inverse. CMAC network is a perceptron-like feedforward structure with associative memory properties. Its memory requirements can be greatly reduced by the use of hash coding techniques. In order for CMAC networks to construct high-order, smooth, nonlinear plant inverse, more general CMAC addressing schemes have been proposed in conjunction with use of B-spline receptive functions. It is shown that B-spline CMAC networks learn orders of magnitude more rapidly than typical implementations of back propagation in the multilayered neural networks, due to the local nature of its weighting updating and the finite support of B-spline receptive field functions.
