The membrane electrode assembly (MEA) of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) would deform when there is a pressure difference between the cathode and anode. In this study, a three-dimensional PEMFC model that incorporates a two-dimensional MEA deformation model is employed to investigate the effects of the curved MEA on oxygen transport, liquid water removal, pressure drops across cells, and resulting overall cell performances. The results show that the MEA deformation generates a gap between the rib and gas diffusion layer (GDL), thereby enhancing the oxygen transport into and liquid water removal from the cathode porous electrode. At an operating voltage of 0.4 V, the output current density is enhanced by 4.83%, 6.67%, and 8.61%, respectively, for the pressure differences of 10, 20, and 30 kPa between the cathode and anode, as compared with that without a pressure difference. An efficiency evaluation criterion (EEC) that represents a tradeoff between mass transfer enhancement and pressure drop penalty is introduced to evaluate the overall cell performance enhancement. The result shows that the EEC value increases with increasing the pressure difference between the cathode and anode, confirming the performance enhancement by the deformed MEA. In addition, the effects of MEA deformation are also examined at two sets of channel heights (H) and widths (W), i.e., W H =0.5 mm and W H =1.5 mm. At an operating voltage of 0.4 V, the output current density is enhanced by 20.18% at a pressure difference of 30 kPa for the cell with W H =0.5 mm, whereas it is improved only by 2.91% for the cell with W H =1.5 mm. Therefore, increasing the pressure difference between the cathode and anode is a more effective approach to performance enhancement for the cell with a small channel height and width. • The MEA deformation caused by cathode and anode pressure differences is studied. • A gap is generated between the bipolar plate and deformed MEA. • Oxygen transport and liquid water removal are enhanced by the gap. • Cell performances are improved by the deformed MEA. In this paper, we report the three-dimensional self-supported CoMoO 4 nanosheet clusters on the nickel foam (denoted as CoMoO 4 /NF) by a facile hydrothermal-calcination method for efficient hydrogen generation. As a result, the freestanding CoMoO 4 electrode exhibits an efficient electrochemical activity towards hydrogen evolution reaction, showing overpotentials as low as 68 and 178 mV at current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm−2 in the alkaline condition (1 M KOH), respectively, a Tafel slope value of 82 mV per decade. Moreover, the electrode exhibits remarkable electrochemical durability for 1000 cycles. Significantly, the water splitting electrolyzer assembled with CoMoO 4 /NF || NiFe LDH/NF (the nickel iron layered double hydroxide supported on the nickel foam) system achieved 20 mA cm−2 at 1.63 V, showing the CoMoO 4 /NF is promising for practical water splitting applications. • The low-cost and effective transition metal oxide of CoMoO 4 was adopted for hydrogen generation. • The open nanostructure can facilitate permeating electrolyte as well as releasing hydrogen molecules. • The crosslinked nanosheet clusters can offer amounts of active sites for hydrogen evolution reaction. Abstract At present, there is an urgent need for plentiful non-noble metal catalyst to substitute for valuableness platinum based metal catalyst in electrochemical water splitting. Here, we fabricated a three-demensional (3D) Ni Co NiCo 2 O 4 nanosheets electrocatalyst that directly grew on Ni foam firstly and then were reduced in 0.1 mol dm−3 sodium borohydride solution. This electrode exhibited high activity in 1.0 mol dm−3 KOH solution with an onset potential of ∼40 mV and a tafel slope of 77 mV dec−1. Furthermore, the Ni Co NiCo 2 O 4 /NF electrode showed a splendid durability during long-playing electrochemical test. Our work may provide an inexpensive, easy-to-obtain and excellent catalyst candidate for future electrolytic water research and industry studies that may involve hydrogen applications in the future. Thorn-like Ni@TiC NAs and flake-like Co@TiC NAs electrodes without any conductive agent and binder are simply fabricated by the potentiostatic electrodeposition of Ni and Co catalysts on the TiC nanowire arrays (NAs). The electrocatalytic activity of H 2 O 2 oxidation on the Ni@TiC NAs electrodes is better than that on the Co@TiC NAs electrodes. The Ni@TiC NAs electrodes demonstrate a rough surface and have many nano-needles on the rod edges, which assures the high utilized efficiency of Ni catalysts. These particular three-dimensional structures may be very suitable for H 2 O 2 electrooxidation. The anodic current of Ni@TiC NAs anode reaches 0.32 A cm −2 at 0.3 V in 1.0 M H 2 O 2 + 4 M KOH solution. The DPFCs employing Ni@TiC NAs anodes display the peak power density of 30.2 mW cm −2 and open circuit voltage of 0.90 V at 85.1 mA cm −2 with desirable cell stability at 10 mL min −1 flow rate and 20 °C, which is much higher than those previously reported.
