The Calamocha fault is an 18-km-long, NNW–SSE striking pure normal fault that moves down the northern sector of the Jiloca graben with respect to the Neogene infill of the Calatayud basin (central Iberian Chain). Its structure and kinematics are characterized by means of detailed geological mapping, morphotectonic analysis and data recording at the outcrop scale. The Calamocha fault represents the inversion of a previous contractional fault zone under the recent tensional stress field (WSW–ENE trending σ3 trajectories). The extensional activity started during the Late Pliocene (ca. 3.8 Ma), accumulating a maximum net slip of 190–230 m (long-term slip rate of 0.05–0.06 mm/a). The palaeoseismological study of three artificial exposures near Calamocha town evidenced recurrent slip during the Late Pleistocene, which proves its active character. Analysis of faulted clastic alluvial units, dated by means of optically stimulated luminescence (OSL), reveals at least eight slip events since 145.9 ± 9.1 ka, the last one being younger than 13.8 ± 0.9 ka. Only a few events represent visible accumulated displacement on the main synthetic rupture surfaces; this allows a rough estimate of the short-term slip rate (during the Late Pleistocene) of about 0.1 mm/a, faster than the long-term rate. The Calamocha fault could potentially produce a characteristic earthquake (in the sense of Schwartz and Coppersmith, J Geophys Res 89:5681–5698, 1984) with moment magnitude Mw ≈ 6.7 ± 0.3 (Mw ≈ 6.9 ± 0.3 in a scenario of activation of the whole Calamocha–Daroca fault zone), average coseismic displacement of 0.5–1.3 m and average recurrence period under 15 ka. The purpose of this study is to document the along-strike early syn-rift history of the Lower Jurassic Carbonate basin of the Central High Atlas (Morocco) by combining sedimentological observations and high-resolution biostratigraphy. Six sections, each from the Sinemurian to the Upper Pliensbachian, were investigated along a 75 km-long transect at the hanging wall of a major fault of the Lower Jurassic Basin (i.e. the Tizi n’ Firest fault). Depositional geometries of the early syn-rift deposits were reconstructed from the correlation between eight main timelines dated by biochronological markers for a time span covering about 6 Ma. Depocentre migration was examined and accommodation rates were calculated at the sub-zone timescale to discuss the along-strike-fault behavior of the Lower Jurassic basin formation. The early stages of extension are marked by contrasted along-strike variations in depositional geometry thickness, depocentre migration and accommodation rates, leading to the growth of three independent sub-basins (i.e. western, central, and eastern), ranging in size from 30 to 50 km, and displaying three contrasted tectono-sedimentary histories. Our results suggest that, during the early rifting phase, tectonic activity was not a continuous and progressive process evolving towards a rift climax stage, but rather a series of acceleration periods that alternated with periods of much reduced activity. Earthquakes in the brittle upper crust induce viscoelastic flow in the lower crust and lithospheric mantle, which can persist for decades and lead to significant Coulomb stress changes on receiver faults located in the surrounding of the source fault. As most previous studies calculated the Coulomb stress changes for a specific earthquake in nature, a general investigation of postseismic Coulomb stress changes independent of local geological conditions is still lacking for intra-continental dip-slip faults. Here we use finite-element models with normal and thrust fault arrays, respectively, to show that postseismic viscoelastic flow considerably modifies the original coseismic Coulomb stress patterns through space and time. Depending on the position of the receiver fault relative to the source fault, areas with negative coseismic stress changes may exhibit positive postseismic stress changes and vice versa. The lower the viscosity of the lower crust or lithospheric mantle, the more pronounced are the transient stress changes in the 1st years, with the lowest viscosity having the largest effect on the stress changes. The evolution of postseismic Coulomb stress changes is further controlled by the superposition of transient stress changes caused by viscoelastic relaxation (leading to stress increase or decrease) and the interseismic strain accumulation (leading to a stress increase). Stress changes induced by viscoelastic relaxation can outweigh the interseismic stress increase such that negative Coulomb stress changes can persist for decades. On some faults, postseismic relaxation and interseismic strain accumulation can act in concert to enhance already positive Coulomb stress changes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The wedge-shaped St. Paul block, western side of the Gulf of Suez rift, exposes Late Cretaceous beds that are folded into transverse folds. The block is bounded from the east and west by east- and southeast-dipping rift-related normal faults, respectively. This study reveals that the transverse folds are extension-related, and formed due to the buttress-like effect that was created during the movement along the rift-related normal faults. The more competent Eocene hanging-wall block of the N-S-striking fault buttressed against the moving less competent Cretaceous hanging-wall block of the NE-SW-striking fault. A localized zone of shortening developed between the two fault trends causing the intervening wedge-shaped block to be crumpled and folded into a series of kilometer-scale, gentle SSE-plunging folds. The buttressing, within block internal localized strain caused by the zigzag geometry of the NE-SW-striking fault, and the effect of the minor cross fault explain the SSE-to-ESE plunges of the mesoscopic folds. This reply tackles the three main points of discussion of the comment, carefully distinguishing those constructive contributions from the potentially confusing ones. (1) We accept that we should have utilised previously published datings of the middle terrace, even if we consider them to be less reliable than the used ones, so broadening the slip-rate range from 0.23-0.33 mm/y to 0.16-0.33 mm/y. Nevertheless, their revision of the post-middle terrace slip rate charges us two contradictory imputations: that we underestimate the throw in a 25% (36 m vs. 47 m) and that this results in 'anomalously high slip rates'. We analyse the adduced error, and we confirm our initial estimate based on our more reliable stratigraphic marker, so rejecting both criticisms. (2) About the paleoseismological interpretation at Los Baños trench, we appreciate the hint about displacement partitioning on the master fault and in our hypothetical blind normal fault during the last three events; however, such partitioning was already considered in our retrodeformation analysis. We believe that there is enough evidence for the two events questioned by the commenters, as well as for the interpretation of the colluvial wedge that evidences one of them. (3) With respect to the fault affecting the youngest terrace: (a) both traces exposed on orthogonal road-cut slopes belong to the same normal fault, and we prove it by means of basic structural constructions, and (b) it does not exhibit any feature suggesting a non-tectonic origin, as the commenters state.
