This article discusses the resolution of basal cell carcinoma (BCC) following a diagnostic periocular punch biopsy and the possibility of surveillance as a management option. The study reviewed case notes of patients who underwent a 4mm punch biopsy at a UK hospital between 2005 and 2019 and were confirmed to have BCC. Out of 392 patients, 14 had complete resolution of their BCC lesion following the punch biopsy and opted for surveillance instead of further excision. The incidence of BCC resolution following punch biopsy in this cohort was 3.6%. The study suggests that surveillance may be a reasonable management option for a small subset of patients with small BCCs that have resolved after biopsy, particularly of the nodular histopathological type. However, careful consideration of risks and longer follow-up periods are necessary. [Extracted from the article]
