Abstract

In this paper, with the trace addition of La element, the formation of LaB6compounds suppresses the copoisoning effect in Al–Si alloys, which can be contributed to the possibility of reactions among the elements. The formation of LaB6compounds maintains the effective quantity of Sr element that ensures the modification effect on eutectic Si phases. Based on the changes of mechanical properties, grain size and the undercooling for α-Al, it is believed that the particles of LaB6compounds can be as the effective nucleation sites for α-Al. The finding of this work is useful for effectively neutralising the copoisoning effect between B and Sr elements. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Abstract

In this work a tungsten carbide six-anvil apparatus was introduced to investigate the high pressure solidification effect on Ti-48 at-%Al alloy. The experimental processes of Ti-48 at-%Al alloy solidified under different pressures were presented in detail. The mechanical properties of Ti-48 at-%Al alloy solidified under different pressures were examined by a Nanoindentor XP tester. It shows a certain increase in the nanohardness of the lamellar structure as the pressure increases from normal pressure to 4 GPa. When the pressure is 4 GPa, the nanohardness increases by 50·2% compared with that of normal pressure.
