The fabrication of composite materials from lignin has attracted increasing attention to reducing the dependence of petrochemical-based resources on carbon neutrality. However, the low content of lignin in the biocomposites remains a challenge. Herein, industrial lignin is fractionated by an organic solvent to reduce its structural heterogeneity. Subsequently, the fractionated lignin samples are integrated with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) to fabricate plastics characterized by uniform thickness and smooth surfaces. The resultant composite films exhibit tensile strength and strain up to 75 MPa and 1050%, respectively, which surpass state-of-the-art lignin-based bioplastics. The mechanism investigations reveal that the enhanced mechanical properties are due to the internal non-covalent interactions derived from the hydroxyl groups of lignin and PVA. Notably, the PVA/lignin films are biodegradable after 92 days' burial in soil. High-safety aqueous zinc (Zn) ion batteries are troubled by dendrite growth and hydrogen evolution reaction on Zn anode, which can be well solved via the construction of surface protective layer. The recent researches mainly focus on the bulk property of the protective layer, but its separation from Zn anode is ignored. In this work, high-viscoelasticity alginate-based (HVAA) layer was in-situ constructed on Zn anodes by the cross-linking of sodium alginate with formaldehyde and the plastifying of glycerin. HVAA layer can combine with H 2 O and coordinate with Zn 2+ ions in aqueous electrolyte to achieve viscoelasticity on Zn anode, which can accommodate volume change of Zn anode during plating/stripping processes to continuously protect Zn anodes under the real battery system. Physical block effect of HVAA layer impedes hydrogen evolution corrosion reaction by avoiding the immediate contact of Zn anodes with aqueous electrolyte. Ionic conductive ability of HVAA layer by coordinating oxygen-containing groups with Zn 2+ can uniform ion flux to induce the homogeneous deposition of Zn 2+ on Zn anode. Zn anode with HVAA endows ZnZn symmetric battery with stably cycle of 4000 h and Zn-iodide full batteries with better electrochemical performance of 8000 cycles comparing with bare Zn anode. In this study, lignin derived from corncobs was chemically modified by substituting the hydroxyl groups present in its structure with methacrylate groups through a catalytic reaction using methacrylic anhydride, resulting in methacrylated lignin (ML). These MLs were incorporated in polymerization reaction of the monomer 2-[(acryloyloxy)ethyl trimethylammonium] chloride (Cl-AETA) and Cl-AETA, Cl-AETA/ML polymers were obtained, characterized (spectroscopic, thermal and microscopic analysis), and evaluated for removing Cr (VI) and As (V) from aqueous media in function of pH, contact time, initial metal concentrations and adsorbent amount. The Cl-AETA/ML polymers followed the Langmuir adsorption model for the evaluated metal anions and were able to remove up to 91 % of Cr (VI) with a q max (maximum adsorption capacity) of 201 mg/g, while for As (V), up to 60 % could be removed with a q max of 58 mg/g. Low ionic conductivity and poor interface stability of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) restrict the practical application as polymeric electrolyte films to prepare solid-state lithium (Li) metal batteries. In this work, biomass-based carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) is designed and developed as organic fillers into PEO matrix to form composite electrolytes (PEO@CMCS). Carboxymethyl groups of CMCS fillers can promote the decomposition of Lithium bis(trifluoromethane sulfonimide) (LiTFSI) to generate more lithium fluoride (LiF) at CMCS/PEO interface, which not only forms ionic conductive network to promote the rapid transfer of Li + but also effectively enhances the interface stability between polymeric electrolyte and Li metal. The enrichment of carboxyl, hydroxyl, and amidogen functional groups within CMCS fillers can form hydrogen bonds with ethylene oxide (EO) chains to improve the tensile properties of PEO-based electrolyte. In addition, the high hardness of CMCS additives can also strengthen mechanical properties of PEO-based electrolyte to resist penetration of Li dendrites. LiLi symmetric batteries can achieve stable cycle for 2500 h and lithium iron phosphate full batteries can maintain 135.5 mAh g -1 after 400 cycles. Sulfonated lignin-based dye dispersants have intensively attracted attention due to their low cost, renewability and abundant sources. However, their utilization is limited by the low content of sulfonic groups and high content of hydroxyl groups in their complex lignin structure, which results in various problems such as high reducing rate of dye, severe staining of the fibers and uneven dyeing. Here, the multi-site sulfonated lignin-based dispersants were prepared with high sulfonic group content (2.20 mmol/g) and low hydroxyl content (2.43 mmol/g). When using it as the dispersant, the dye uptake rate was improved from 69.23 % to 98.55 %, the reducing rate was decreased from 20.82 % to 2.03 %, the K/S value was reduced from 0.69 to 0.02, and the particle sizes in dye system before and after high temperature treatment were stabilized below 0.5 μm. Besides, the dispersion effect was significantly improved because no obvious separation between dye and water was observed even if without the assistance of grinding process. Adsorption method is an effective approach to treat wastewater containing methylene blue. Herein, a cost-effective and eco-friendly lignin-based network composite hydrogel adsorbent (PAA@SML) was constructed by using polyacrylic acid (PAA) to crosslink with sulfomethylated lignin (SML) via free radical polymerization for adsorption of methylene blue (MB) from wastewater. The constructed PAA@SML-0.2 exhibited remarkable adsorption performance towards removal of MB, with a maximum theoretical adsorption capacity of 777.1 mg·g -1 . The improved efficiency can be attributed to the well-established network structure and abundant hydrophilic functional groups present in the adsorbent, promoting the interaction between methylene blue (MB) molecules and the adsorption sites of the adsorbent. The adsorption process of the adsorbent for MB followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic and the Langmuir isotherm models, which illustrated the adsorption process attributed to monolayer chemisorption. Mechanism investigation confirmed that the adsorption of MB by PAA@SML-0.2 primarily relied on hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions. Moreover, the recyclability test demonstrated excellent regeneration usability and stability of PAA@SML-0.2, and the adsorption capacity maintained above 74.0 % after five cycles. Galactomannan-based biogums were derived from fenugreek, guar, tara, and carob and consisted of mannose and galactose with different ratios, as well as the implementation of high-value utilization was very significant for sustainable development. In this work, renewable and low-cost galactomannan-based biogums were designed and developed as functional coatings protected on the Zn metal anodes. The molecule structure of galactomannan-based biogums were explored on the effect of anticorrosion ability and uniform deposition behavior through the introduction of fenugreek gum, guar gum, tara gum, and carob gum with different ratios of mannose to galactose as 1.2:1, 2:1, 3:1, and 4:1. The existence of biogum protective layers can reduce the contact area between Zn anodes and aqueous electrolyte to enhance the anticorrosion ability of Zn anodes. Rich oxygen-containing groups in galactomannan-based biogums can coordinate with Zn 2+ and Zn atoms to form ion conductivity gel layer and adsorb closely on the surface of Zn metal, which can induce uniform deposition of Zn 2+ to avoid dendrite growth. Zn electrodes protected by biogums can cycle impressively for 1980 h with 2 mA cm -2 and 2 mAh cm -2 . Multifunctional lignin-based adsorbents, which have shown great application prospect, have attracted widespread attention. Herein, a series of multifunctional lignin-based magnetic recyclable adsorbents were prepared from carboxymethylated lignin (CL), which was rich in carboxyl group (-COOH). After optimizing the mass ratio of CL to Fe 3 O 4 , the prepared CL/Fe 3 O 4 (3:1) adsorbent showed efficient adsorption capacities for heavy metal ions. The kinetic and isotherm nonlinear fitting studies revealed that the adsorption process followed the second-order kinetic and Langmuir models, and the maximum adsorption capacities (Q max ) of CL/Fe 3 O 4 (3:1) magnetic recyclable adsorbent for Pb 2+ , Cu 2+ and Ni 2+ ions reached 189.85, 124.43 and 106.97 mg/g, respectively. Meanwhile, after 6 cycles, the adsorption capacities of CL/Fe 3 O 4 (3:1) for Pb 2+ , Cu 2+ and Ni 2+ ions could keep at 87.4 %, 83.4 % and 82.3 %, respectively. In addition, CL/Fe 3 O 4 (3:1) also exhibited excellent electromagnetic wave absorption (EMWA) performance with a reflection loss (RL) of -28.65 dB at 6.96 GHz under the thickness of 4.5 mm, and its effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) achieved 2.24 GHz (6.08-8.32 GHz). Excessive discharge of inorganic and organic contaminants in water poses a serious threat to the ecosystems. However, most synthetic adsorbents lack cost-effectiveness in terms of preparation. Interestingly, loofah sponge (LS) was a natural absorbent that could effectively remove pollutions in wastewater, but its adsorption capacity is barely satisfactory. Herein, we present a novel strategy of TEMPO-oxidized loofah sponge (TOLS) to boost the adsorption performance of LS. The batch experiments demonstrated that the maximum removal capacity of TOLS for Pb(II) and methylene blue (MB) was 96.6 mg/g and 10.0 mg/g, respectively, which were 3.5 and 1.3 times that of pristine LS. Notably, the continuous-flow reaction testing of the mixed solution revealed that the elimination rate of Pb(II) and MB was still better than 90 % even after 16 h. Such excellent performance was benefit from the enhanced specific surface area and surface carboxyl content of TOLS. Recently, the high-value utilization of food wastes has attracted great interest in sustainable development. Focusing on the major application of electrochemical energy storage (ECES), light-weight lignin-based carbon nanofibers (LCNFs) were controllably fabricated as supercapacitors from melon seed shells (MSS) and peanut shells (PS) through electrospinning and carbonizing processes. As a result, the optimal specific capacitance of 533.7 F/g in three-electrode system, energy density of 69.7 Wh/kg and power density of 780 W/Kg in two-electrode system were achieved. Surprisingly, the LCNFs also presented a satisfied electromagnetic absorption property: The minimum reflection loss (RL) value reached -37.2 dB at an absorbing frequency of 7.98 GHz with an effective frequency (RL < 10 dB) of 2.24 GHz (6.88 to 9.12 GHz) at a thickness of 3.0 mm. Lignin is recommended to a tempting alternative precursor of petroleum for fabricating carbon nanofibers (CNFs) due to its high carbon content, low-cost and renewable resources. However, the property of lignin-based carbon nanofibers (LCNFs) is inferior owing to the heterogeneity and 3D-network structure of lignin, which hinders its application in supercapacitors. The latest developments in fractionation technology have shown great potential for overcoming the aforementioned shortcomings. However, most of fractionation methods mainly rely on expensive chemicals and complex reaction process, such as enzymes, multiple solvents, membranes, and dialysis tubes. Herein, we proposed a controllable and effective strategy to fractionate lignin by only changing the ratio of ethanol/water (V/V) as mixture solvent. This gradient extraction method effectively removed the part of lignin with small molecular and branching structure, thus selectively getting the fractionated lignin with high molecular weight, narrow polydispersity index, and good linear structure. Fortunately, when the ratio of ethanol/water was 6:4, the corresponding LCNFs (LCNFs-L60) was obtained with large specific surface area, independent filamentous morphology networks and excellent electrochemical property. Fabricating lignin-based carbon nanofibers (LCNFs) with the lignin in spent coffee grounds (SCG) as raw material which are disposed as waste amounting to millions tons annual is benefit to promote economy and environmental protection. However, due to the heterogeneity and complex three-dimensional structure, the mechanic property is very poor. In this study, we propose a fractionating pretreatment method to overcome the above problems by regulating the structure of SCG lignin in which high-performance LCNFs were fabricated. On one hand, the linear structure of SCG lignin was optimized to fit the raw material of LCNFs by tuning the content of β-O-4 and C 5 -substituted condensed phenolic compounds. On the other hand, the carboxyl as the hydrophilic groups was removed so as to promote the mixing of lignin and polyacrylonitrile (PAN, blending agent) in organic solvents. Additionally, the heterogeneity was reduced by screening large molecular weight SCG lignin with low polydispersity index (PDI). Fortunately, with 1:1 mass ratio of the above fractionated lignin and PAN as substrate, the LCNFs could reach to comparable mechanic properties with those of pure PAN CNFs. To maximize the utilization of Abaca lignin in the current biorefinery, structural characteristics of native lignin from Abaca were firstly comprehensively investigated. Parallelly, effective delignification of Abaca was achieved by alkaline hydrogen peroxide (AHP) process, which facilitated the production of specialty paper in industry. The structural changes of lignin macromolecules during the AHP delignification were illustrated by comparing the structural differences of the released lignin fraction and corresponding native lignin, which were analyzed via the advanced analytical methods, such as 2D-HSQC NMR, 31 P NMR, pyrolysis-GC/MS, and GPC techniques. It was found that Abaca lignin is a HGS-type lignin, which is overwhelmingly composed of β-O-4 linkages and abundant hydroxycinnamic acids (mainly p-coumaric acid). In addition, partial cleavage of β-O-4 linkages and p-coumarate in lignin occurred during the AHP delignification process. Meanwhile, AHP process also led to the elevation of H-type lignin units in AHPL. Understanding the distribution and structural features of lignin in heartwood, sapwood, and bark of terrestrial plants is important to optimize the industrial utilization of lignocellulose. In this work, the lignins in heartwood, sapwood, and bark of Eucalyptus urophylla × E. grandis were comparatively studied. Confocal Raman microscopy was used to probe the heterogeneity of lignin distribution in situ. The swollen residual enzyme lignin samples were isolated and systematically characterized to determine the structural differences. The results showed that the content and molecular weights of lignin gradually decreased in the order of heartwood, sapwood, and bark. The S/G ratios of heartwood lignin (3.45) and sapwood lignin (2.74) suggested the increase of deposited S-type lignin with the maturity of wood. The bark lignin exhibited a high frequency of β-O-4' linkages and showed a unique substructural pattern with the absence of spirodienone substructures and p-hydroxycinnamyl alcohol end-groups., (Copyright © 2018. A facile and green route is introduced to fabricate antimicrobial composite films in this article from xylan (XL) and hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) with citric acid (CA) and polyethylene glycol 400 (PEG-400) as crosslinker and plasticizer, respectively. XL was obtained by precipitating wood hydrolysate (WH) produced during pulping process with ethanol. Antimicrobial activity was constructed by incorporating β-cyclodextrin/sodium benzoate (β-CD/NaBz) complex into the composite matrix. The interactions, including hydrogen bonds and covalent bonds, between the polymers were confirmed by FT-IR spectroscopy. Morphology and crystallinity of composite films at different curing time were investigated by AFM and XRD, respectively. The composite film cured for 40 min exhibits tensile strength up to 62.3 MPa and oxygen permeability (OP) as low as 1.0 cm 3 ·μm m -2 ·d -1 ·kPa -1 . Finally, the antimicrobial test against Staphylococcus aureus reveals superior antimicrobial activity of composite films with complex. A large number of archaeological wooden building poles have been excavated from the Hai Menkou site (Yunnan province, China). Lignin can be transformed and altered accompanied with significant loss of carbohydrates during this process. Elucidation of chemical and structural transformations of lignin is of primary importance for understanding both the nature of degradation processes and the structure of waterlogged archaeological wood, and crucial for developing proper consolidation technology and restoring artifacts of historical and cultural value. In this study, state-of-the-art analytical techniques, including SEM, FT-IR, XRD, CP-MAS 13 C NMR, 2D-HSQC NMR, 31 P-NMR, CRM, GPC and TG analysis, were all employed to elucidate the structural characteristics of lignin in waterlogged and reference Pinus wood. The results interpreted by NMR analysis demonstrated the depolymerization of lignin via cleavage of β-O-4, β-5, -OCH 3 and some LCC linkages, leading to a higher amount of free phenol OH groups in the lignin from the ancient waterlogged wood as compared to that of the reference wood. Microscopically, it was found that extensive degradation of carbohydrates in cell walls was mainly occurred in secondary cell walls, while the lignin concentrations were relatively increased in CCML and S regions in the plant cell wall of the ancient wood., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier B.V. A better understanding of the lignin in the straw of rapeseed, Brassica campestris L., is a prerequisite for promoting the biorefinery industry of rapeseed. Two different methods for fractionating lignin from rapeseed straw were proposed in this study. Lignin in the raw material was isolated with alkaline solution and recovered by acid precipitation. A comparison between two lignin preparations obtained from two different methods has been made in terms of yield and purity. The structural features were investigated by gel permeation chromatography, FT-IR spectroscopy, 2D-HSQC NMR and 31 P NMR. Taking into consideration of the yield and purity, the proposed methods are effective for extracting lignin. NMR results showed that syringyl (S) was the predominant unit over guaiacyl (G) or p-hydroxyphenyl (H) units in the lignin preparations, and linkages β-O-4', β-β' and β-5' were also identified and quantified by NMR techniques. This study demonstrated that the combination of hydrothermal or dilute-acid pretreatment and alkaline process could efficiently isolate the lignins from the rapeseed straw to further applications for industries. To better understand the variations of structural characteristics of lignin macromolecules during different growth years of Triploid of Populus tomentosa Carr, a novel lignin isolation procedure based on double ball-milling and enzymatic hydrolysis (DEL) was proposed in this study. The morphological distributions of lignin in the plant cell wall of these poplar wood samples were monitored by Confocal Raman Microscopy (CRM). The ultrahigh yields (105.1%-111.2%) of DELs were significantly higher than those (24.4-31.8%) of corresponding cellulolytic enzyme lignins (CELs). DELs and CELs were elaborately characterized by HPAEC, GPC, 2D-HSQC NMR and 31 P NMR techniques, and NMR results showed that DEL samples possess similar structural features as compared to CEL counterparts except for the decreased S/G ratio and p-hydroxybenzoate (PB) as well as increased p-hydroxyphenyl units (H). There are no obvious differences in the structural characteristics except for high contents of PB and H units in DEL-1, as well as high S/G ratio and β-O-4' linkages in DEL-5. In the present study, Eucalyptus was subjected to organosolv pretreatment processes with aqueous 2-propanol at 200-220°C to obtain lignin with benign characters for its valorization and digestible substrates for bioethanol production. Results showed that different delignification ratios (64.00%-81.26%) and molecular weights (M w =610-2680g/mol) of lignin fractions were dissociated from various pretreatment conditions, and the glucose yields of all the pretreated substrates significantly increased to 54.65-88.59% as compared to that of raw material (9.20%). Additionally, the amounts of β-O-4, β-β, and β-5 substructures were regularly decreased with the increased temperature and time. By contrast, the structural characteristics of the lignin fractions obtained with 70% 2-PrOH/water were less-altered than those with 50% 2-PrOH/water pretreatment. Remarkably, lignin with the lowest molecular weight (M w =610g/mol) and less-altered chemical structure was achieved at 200°C for 120min, which is beneficial to subsequent catalytic degradation of lignin., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier B.V. A better understanding of the inhomogeneous molecular structure of lignin from bamboo is a prerequisite for promoting the "biorefinery" technologies of the bamboo feedstock. A mild and successive method for fractionating native lignin from bamboo species was proposed in the present study. The molecular structure and structural inhomogeneity of the isolated lignin polymers were comprehensively investigated by elemental analysis, carbohydrate analysis, state-of-the-art NMR and analytical pyrolysis techniques (quantitative (13)C NMR, (13)C-DEPT 135 NMR, 2D-HSQC NMR, (31)P NMR, and pyrolysis-GC-MS). The results showed that the proposed method is effective for extracting lignin from bamboo. NMR results showed that syringyl (S) was the predominant unit in bamboo lignin over guaiacyl (G) and p-hydroxyphenyl (H) units. In addition, the lignin was associated with p-coumarates and ferulates via ester and ether bonds, respectively. Moreover, various substructures, such as β-O-4, β-β, β-5, β-1, and α,β-diaryl ether linkages, were identified and quantified by NMR techniques. Based on the results obtained, a proposed schematic diagram of structural heterogeneity of the lignin polymers extracted from the bamboo is presented. Corncob lignin was treated with pressurized hot water in a cylindrical autoclave in current investigation. With the aim of investigating the effect of reaction temperature and retention time on the distribution of degradation products, the products were divided into five fractions including gas, volatile organic compounds, water-soluble oil, heavy oil, and solid residue. It was found that hydrothermal degradation of corncob lignin in pressurized hot water produced a large amount of phenolic compounds with lower molecular weight than the raw lignin. Some phenolic and benzene derivatives monomers such as vanillin, 2-methoxy-phenol, 2-ethyl-phenol, p-xylene, and 1, 3-dimethyl-benzene were also identified in the degradation products. The products were further analyzed by GC-MS, GPC, 2D-HSQC, and (31)P-NMR to investigate their suitability for partial incorporation into phenol formaldehyde adhesive as a substitution of phenol. The results indicated that the reaction temperature had more effect on the products distribution than the retention time. The optimal condition for heavy oil production appeared at 290 °C with retention time 0 min. The compounds of heavy oil had more active sites than the raw lignin, suggesting that the heavy oil obtained from hydrothermal degradation of lignin is a promising material for phenol formaldehyde adhesive synthesis., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier B.V. In this study, an environmental-friendly hydrothermal pretreatment of Eucalyptus fiber followed with alkali post-treatment was developed to produce bioethanol efficiently. This biorefinery process allowed all major components of biomass being converted into high value-added products. The chemical and structural features of the residual hemicelluloses isolated with alkali from the hydrothermal pretreated Eucalyptus fiber, were comparatively investigated. Sugar and spectral analyses indicated that the hemicelluloses were mainly composed of glucuronoxylans, and especially hemicelluloses prepared at higher temperature (180°C) contained higher contents of glucomannans and α-glucan. Hydrothermal pretreatment resulted in a significant hydrolysis of the glycosidic linkages in xylan backbone, and thus the molecular weight of the hemicelluloses was significantly reduced from 56,520 to 7780g/mol with the increase of temperature. Hemicelluloses were extracted from holocellulose of bamboo by alkaline treatment. The phosphorylated poly(vinyl alcohol) (P-PVA) samples with various substitution degrees were prepared through the esterification of PVA and phosphoric acid. A series of hydrogels of semi-interpenetrating polymeric networks (semi-IPN) composed of hemicelluloses-g-poly(acrylic acid) (HM-g-PAA) and the phosphorylated poly(vinyl alcohol) (P-PVA) were prepared by radical polymerization using potassium persulphate (KPS) as initiator. The HM-g-PAA networks were crosslinked by N,N-methylenebisacrylamide (MBA) as a crosslinking agent in the presence of linear P-PVA. FT-IR results confirmed that the hydrogels comprised a porous crosslink structure of P-PVA and HM with side chains that carried carboxylate and phosphorylate groups. SEM observations indicated that the incorporation of P-PVA induced highly porous structure, and P-PVA was uniformly dispersed in the polymeric network. The interior network structures of the semi-IPN matrix became more porous with increasing P-PVA. The TGA results showed that the thermo-decomposing temperature and thermal stability were increased effectively for intruding the chain of P-PVA. The maximum equilibrium swelling ratio of hydrogels in distilled water and 0.9 wt% sodium chloride solutions was up to 1085 g g(-1) and 87 g g(-1), respectively.
