Biodegradable polymer composites reinforced with agri-food lignocellulosic biowaste represent cost-effective and sustainable materials potentially able to replace traditional composites for structural, household, and packaging applications. Herein, the preparation of polylactic acid (PLA)/pecan (Carya illinoinensis) nutshell (PNS) biocomposites at high filler loading (50 wt%) is reported, alongside the effect of two environmentally friendly physical treatments, namely ball-milling of the filler and thermal annealing on biocomposites. PNS enhanced the thermal stability, the viscoelastic response, and the crystallinity of the polymer. Furthermore, filler ball-milling also increased the melt fluidity of the biocomposites, potentially improving melt processing. Finally, the presence of PNS remarkably enhanced the effect of thermal annealing in the compounds. In particular, heat deflection temperature of the biocomposites dramatically increased, up to 60 °C with respect to the non-annealed samples. Overall, these results emphasize the potential of combining natural fillers and environmentally benign physical treatments to tailor the properties of PLA biocomposites, especially for those applications which require a stiff and lightweight material with low deformability. Biocomposites are materials that are easy to manufacture and environmentally friendly. Sugar palm fibre (SPF) is considered to be an emerging reinforcement candidate that could provide improved mechanical stiffness and strength to the biocomposites. Numerous studies have been recently conducted on sugar palm biocomposites to evaluate their physical, mechanical and thermal properties in various conditions. Sugar palm biocomposites are currently limited to the applications of traditional household products despite their good thermal stability as a prospective substitute candidate for synthetic fibres. Thus, thermal analysis methods such as TGA and DTG are functioned to determine the thermal properties of single fibre sugar palm composites (SPCs) in thermoset and thermoplastic matrix as well as hybrid SPCs. The biocomposites showed a remarkable change considering thermal stability by varying the individual fibre compositions and surface treatments and adding fillers and coupling agents. However, literature that summarises the thermal properties of sugar palm biocomposites is unavailable. Particularly, this comprehensive review paper aims to guide all composite engineers, designers, manufacturers and users on the selection of suitable biopolymers for sugar palm biocomposites for thermal applications, such as heat shields and engine components. The present study investigated the effect of alkali treatment on the enhancement of Physico-chemical, tensile, thermal and surface properties of Symphirema involucratum stem fiber (SISF). The investigation of chemical constituents of optimally alkalized SISF revealed that ideal increment of cellulose content (68.69 wt%) and desired modification of other chemical components was accomplished through 60 min immersion period. An increase in the crystallinity index to 33.33% and small crystallite size to 3.21 nm was noted by X-ray diffraction analysis. Moreover, the treated fiber was found suitable for light-weight applications since physical analysis acknowledges that the density of the fiber augmented to 1424 kg/m3after surface treatment that reduces total weight percentage. The enhancements in tensile strength (471.2 ± 19.8 MPa), tensile modulus (5.82 ± 0.77 GPa) and thermal stability (371 °C) were noted that ensures the treated fiber has good mechanical and thermal properties required for composite preparation. The development of high-strength and intrinsic flame-retardant natural fiber-reinforced green composite (NFRGC) is a landmark for high-performance structural applications. This paper reports a biobased, high-performance, flame-retardant composite material based on diverse bio-resources. Tough and strong cellulose long filaments (CLFs) are combined with vanillin-derived epoxy (VDE) resin to achieve high strength and flame-retardant NFRGC. The green composite was fabricated using a simple hand lay-up and compression molding technique. The green composite showed a noteworthy increment of 100.9 % flexural strength and 346 % flexural modulus compared to the neat VDE resin. Interestingly, despite the highly flammable nature of CLF, the green composite passes a V-0 rating under the UL-94 test, indicating excellent flame-retardant characteristics. Additionally, the green composite demonstrated outstanding hydrophobicity with a water contact angle of 104.2° and good chemical stability in various acidic and organic solvents. In this work peanut oil cake extracted Cellulose Micro Filler (CMF) is used for the advancement of mechanical and thermal properties in natural fiber composites. This fiber powder was used in enhancing the applications of Pineapple (P)/Flax (F) natural fiber epoxy composites. The X Ray Diffraction (XRD) results of CMF showed improved Crystalline Index (Crl) of 70.25° and crystalline size of 5.5 nm. FTIR results confirmed the rich cellulose content in functional groups of filler with peaks at 1058 cm−1, 1162 cm−1, 1370 cm−1 and 1428 cm−1. Mechanical results showed a positive impact with incorporation of CMF in PF hybrid fiber composites. Thermal stability results showed enhancement in the degradation temperature, residual %, endothermic peak and enthalpy by the incorporation of CMF. In the 30% PF combinations degradation temperature T 50 , T 70 , T 70 enhanced from 387.73–391.08°, 434.81–454.81° and 468.91–553.36° by the filler substitution. Similarly residual % increased from 17.69–24.35%. The combination with 35% PF showed enhancement in degradation temperature, residual percentage, endothermic peak and enthalpy with filler addition up to 3%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

There are numerous better applications of fibre reinforced polymer composites today, when compared with metals and alloys. Many studies have been conducted to further improve the inherent mechanical and thermal properties of the composite materials, especially with sustainable, environmental friendly, recyclable and biodegradable reinforcements. Consequently, in this current study, the composites were prepared by combining bio solid waste (date seed filler) and vinyl ester to enhance the properties of polymer composites. The date seed filler reinforced vinyl ester (DSF-VE) composites were prepared by using conventional compression moulding technique with varying fillers loadings from 5% to 50%. The mechanical (tensile, flexural, impact and hardness), water absorption and thermal (heat deflection temperature and thermo-gravimetric analysis) properties of the DSF-VE composites were experimentally evaluated. Scanning electron microscopic analysis was carried out to analyse the surface characteristics and fractured surface of the DSF-VE composites. It was evident from the results obtained that 30 wt% of the DSF-VE composites exhibited the highest mechanical properties: impact, tensile, hardness and flexural of 17.03 KJ/m2, 40.3 MPa, 51 and 149 MPa, respectively, among the fabricated composites. Similarly, the heat deflection temperatures of DSF-VE composites increased by 58.49%, when compared with the neat, pure vinyl ester resin. The thermo-gravimetric analysis showed that the natural filler-based (DSF-VE) composites possessed thermal stability up to 400.2 °C, which was within the polymerisation process temperature. Furthermore, the DSF-VE composites have been successfully utilized for various potential applications, such as fabrication of a table fan blade, an engine guard for two-wheelers and self-motor guard for four wheelers. Bio-composites are easy to manufacture and environmentally friendly, could reduce the overall cost and provide lightweight due to the low density of the natural fibers. In a bid to compete with the synthetic fiber reinforced composites, a single natural fiber composite may not be a good choice to obtain optimal properties. Hence, hybrid composites are produced by adding two or more natural fibers together to obtain improved properties, such as mechanical, physical, thermal, water absorption, acoustic and dynamic, among others. Regarding thermal stability, the composites showed a significant change by varying the individual fiber compositions, fiber surface treatments, addition of fillers and coupling agents. The glass transition temperature and melting point obtained from the thermomechanical analysis and differential scanning calorimetry are not the same values for several hybrid composites, since the volume variation was not always parallel with the enthalpy change. However, the difference between the temperature calculated from the thermomechanical analysis and differential scanning calorimetry was lower. Significantly, this critical reviewed study has a potential of guiding all composite designers, manufacturers and users on right selection of composite materials for thermal applications, such as engine components (covers), heat shields and brake ducts, among others. A hybrid composite was prepared from cassava bagasse (CB) and sugar palm fiber (SPF) using casting technique with cassava starch (CS) as matrix and fructose as a plasticizer. Different loadings of SPF (2, 4, 6 and 8% w/w of dry starch) were added to the CS/CB composite film containing 6% CB. The addition of SPF significantly influenced the physical properties. It increased the thickness while decreasing the density, water content, water solubility and water absorption. However, no significant effect was noticed on the thermal properties of the hybrid composite film. The incorporation of SPF increased the relative crystallinity up to 47%, compared to 32% of the CS film. SEM micrographs indicated that the filler was incorporated in the matrix. The film with a higher concentration of SPF (CS-CB/SPF8) showed a more heterogeneous surface. It could be concluded that the incorporation of SPF led to changes in cassava starch film properties, potentially affecting the film performances. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
