Biodegradable composites were prepared from polylactic acid (PLA) and bamboo charcoal (BC) by melt blending and hot pressing. The effects of BC addition on the mechanical properties, water absorption, DMA, TGA, DSC, and CONE of BC/PLA composites were investigated. The microscopic morphology of the composites was analyzed by SEM. The results showed that for BC addition of 40 wt%, the mechanical strength, thermal properties, and flame retardant properties of the composites were improved compared with those of PLA, with a 2.24 % increase in flexural strength and a 1535 % increase (500 °C) in TG mass retention rate. The crystallinity increased by 129.66 %, the peak loss factor decreased by 31.15 %, the time required for combustion was delayed by 168 s, the peak heat release rate decreased by 29.40 %, the carbon residue rate detected by cone calorimetry increased by 48.50 %, and the peak mass loss rate decreased by 48.82 %. The addition of BC enhanced the crystallization capacity of PLA, and improved the thermal properties and flame retardant properties of the prepared composites. Applications for polylactic acid (PLA) are significantly impacted by its poor mechanical properties and lack of thermal stability. The goal of this work is to bridge the gap of poor compatibility among the components and enhance their interface interlocking capability to improve the toughness and thermal stability. Ultrafine bamboo charcoal (UFBC) was treated through deep eutectic solvent (DES) method to deposit sodium lignosulfonate (LS) on its surface. LS was used with PLA as a bio-coupling agent to create an eco-friendly PLA composite film with a wide range of characteristics. Benefiting from the penetration of PLA to the internal pores in UFBC, the resultant L-UFBC/PLA film has a good mechanical interlocking structure. Ls can increase the compatibility and strengthen the interface interlocking capability through DES method, which greatly improves the mechanical properties of the system. In comparison to pure PLA one, the elongation at break was 136.24 % greater, and the crystallinity (Xc) increased from 1.09 % to 3.33 %. Furthermore, the thermal stability of the system was also improved, and the residual at 600 °C rose by 4.83 %. These characteristics offer the prepared L-UFBC/PLA film a wide range of potential applications in the packaging, medical, agricultural, and other sectors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This work investigates the extraction of cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) from bamboo fibre as an alternative approach to utilize the waste bamboo fibre. In this study, bamboo fibre was subjected to acid hydrolysis for efficient isolation of CNC from bamboo fibre. The extracted CNC's were morphologically, characterized via Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). The energy Dispersive X-rays (EDX) provided the elemental composition of the prepared CNC's and X-ray diffractometer (XRD) exhibited their crystallinity. The physiochemical analysis was done via Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR); and their thermal analysis was revealed by Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) and Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). As from their morphological investigations, rod like structures of CNC's were observed under SEM analysis with higher carbon content as demonstrated by EDX, while needle shaped CNC's were observed from TEM and AFM studies. Acid hydrolysis for 45 min resulted into higher degree of crystallinity and higher yield of CNC's about 86.96% and 22% respectively. Owing to higher quality of CNC's obtained as a result of efficient and modified techniques, these can find potential usage in nanocomposites for biomedical and food packaging application. • Nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC) was extracted from bamboo fibre by acid hydrolysis. • Acid hydrolysis followed by ultrasonification to get highly crystalline cellulose • Disintegrated rod structured NCC evidenced the effectiveness of the technique. • The NCC of higher thermal stability were obtained from bamboo. This paper reports a green nanocomposite made by simply blending chitin nanofibers and bamboo cellulose nanofibers without chemically dissolving chitin and cellulose raw materials. Good biodegradability and biocompatibility of chitin in conjunction with good mechanical properties of cellulose are beneficial for developing green nanocomposite applicable for food packaging. The bamboo cellulose nanofiber (BACNF) is isolated by using a TEMPO-oxidation followed by an aqueous counter collision (ACC) method. Chitin nanofiber (CTNF) is isolated by using the ACC method. A simple blending is used to prepare the nanocomposite with different CTNF and BACNF concentration. Morphologies, mechanical properties, chemical interactions, thermal properties, water contact angles and biodegradability of the nanocomposite are investigated. The tensile strength and Young's modulus of the prepared nanocomposite increased up to 3 and 1.3 times, respectively as the BACNF concentration increase. The nanocomposite exhibites better thermal stability than the pure BACNF. Furthermore, the nanocomposite is fully biodegradable within a week.
