Business intelligence (BI) is a technology-driven process for analysing data and presenting reports, which helps managers and executives to make better business decisions. In order to achieve a proper data analysis and an optimised visualisation, a variety of tools, applications and methodologies can be used. Those analytical results consist of the driving force of business decision-making process that is why the methodologies that are going to be used in each case must be chosen carefully. Systems science provides methodologies suitable for data analysis. So, the main purpose of our study is to present to you how the systems thinking and systemic methodologies like DCSYM, systems dynamics, etc., can be applied on blockchain technologies (BT). Also, through the different sections of this study we will present a stage of a multi-methodology that we are developing for the systemic management of blockchain technologies.

Organisations, seen as socio-technical systems, are in close interaction with process-aware information systems, not only in an operational sense but also in terms of resilience. The ability of the latter to adapt to external or internal challenges affects the resilience of the whole organisation. This exploratory study aims at finding the resilience dynamics in such complex systems. To this end, the systemic perspective provides useful insights. Employing the concept of requisite variety, we treat disaster events and business challenges as 'variety deficiencies' that need to be addressed through an adaptation process. System Dynamics provides the means to create models that describe and simulate the resilience dynamics of the whole system. The study concludes that resilience and adaptation are a matter of knowledge leverage, while the simulation model highlights the effect of knowledge leverage in the adaptation process.

The socio-technical systems are now inherent in both the mainstream and the development cycle of any modern business and organisation. The modelling of the underlying systems is essential for the correct decision making by managers. A key role for the stakeholders' communication and the proper design of the model play the design modelling methodologies and especially the systemic ones. The purpose of the present study is to formulate and present a methodology that is proper for systems design incorporating systemic and cybernetic aspects. The proposed methodology is based on a graphical modelling notation and applies to sociotechnical systems, especially to the design and/or requirements elicitation phase of information systems. Our approach is based on the design and control systemic methodology (DCSYM) (Assimakopoulos and Theocharopoulos, 2009), which is enriched with new features in order to support the proposed functionalities. The proposed modelling approach extends the design and control systemic methodology (DCSYM) and opens new horizons in the cybernetics sector.

The 21st century organisation works and networks in an interconnected world where ambiguity and uncertainty abound. This dynamic environment necessitates continuous vigilance over the forces that impact the organisation's performance, and continual refinement of the sociotechnical infrastructure that supports its purpose. Relevant and timely decision-making is essential to managing change. However, absent resilient structural arrangements in place to effectively cope with change, the outcomes of decisions taken will be speculative, at best. In this article, we explore the (core) functions that form the traditional paradigm of management and consider the cybernetic structure of the viable system model as an alternate means of maintaining organisational cohesion during times of relative normality and during times of change. Moreover, we describe a pragmatic conceptual framework, which bridges the gap between the traditional and the cybernetic approach that can be used to manage change. Finally, we apply this framework to transform a traditional performance monitoring scheme into an integrated multidimensional performance measurement system.

Responsiveness to changing conditions is an essential characteristic of every viable system. Responsiveness for an organisation implies: 1) changes in its short, medium, or long-term strategy; 2) refinement of its sociotechnical infrastructure that supports strategy; 3) modification of its tactical and/or operational practices that are adapted to achieve strategy; 4) any combination of the above. The organisation's capacity (or lack thereof) to continuously respond to changing conditions may lead to new opportunities that reinforce its viability, or may result in its stagnation and ultimate demise. Yet, decision makers often view change as a discrete event rather than the result of a continuous multi-dimensional process that is subject to the cognitive boundaries of shifting paradigms that shape understanding of the conditions that warrant action and the means through which these conditions need to be addressed. This work applies a systems approach to the various paradigms that framed our perception of the organisation and its function, so as to outline the overall context through which to explore the relationship between the characteristics, attributes, and structural features of change and the manner through which system change may be embraced by decision makers, as a means of fortifying the organisation's viability.

Changes in information and communication technology (ICT) require continuous modifications in contemporary organisations and in corresponding work processes. Although technologies are a means and not an end, they should be chosen considering legal frameworks, organisational issues, social and territorial peculiarities and economic sustainability. The e-Government for Mediterranean Countries (eG4M) (Misuraca, 2006) project basically concentrates on extending, completing and improving the e-model through the achievement of new research results and its application by participating with the support of the Mediterranean Countries (MCs) - in establishing and consolidating their e-Government systems. This paper focuses on improving the modelling of eG4M perspective using systemic methodologies and especially the viable system model and DCSYM. The methodologies' target is to correctly analyse and form the model and in parallel to improve it. Systemic methodologies focus on human and are very valuable tools which help understand and define the functions of a system.

A key challenge of the modern organisation is to continually align its processes, resources and capabilities to reflect an ever-increasing turbulent environment, while reinforcing its structures and functions so that they continue to support the organisation's purpose. This work will introduce a methodological systemic scheme (MSS) that is derived from the semantic diagramming principles of the design and control systemic methodology (DCSYM) and the causal loop diagramming techniques used in system dynamics, which can be used as an effective means through which the modern organisation can apply a systems approach to its management paradigm for the purpose of embracing change while reinforcing the structural cohesion of the various organisational units of which it is comprised, which will enable them to respond successfully to the diverse conditions emerging from the various internal and environmental influences to which they are subject.

In this paper, we present the viable system model (VSM) of Beer by examining its effectiveness in practice using a different and structured design. In order to support better viable systems, we deliver briefly the design and control systemic methodology (DCSYM) in strategic and procedure level. The conceptual environment of VSM within DCSYM will be presented as a systemic multi-methodology called ‘VIPROCE’ using the principles of total systems intervention (TSI) methodology. In the new viable and operational system we analyse organisational structures in strategic and procedure level where control and meta-control systems are used for decision and meta-decision making along with a process drawing tool. For this methodology, we present a real application for Organization for Health Care Services Provision, known as E.O.P.Y.Y. in Greece. Finally, we give our personal aspects for total viable development including human development.

Virtual Educational Communities of Practice are new types of organisations that have been emerging as autonomous systems in Greek educational scheme. Initiated by technology champions who drive and administer their technological infrastructure, these Communities gradually create a new ICT culture based on informal learning conversations. In this paper, we attempt a systemic exegesis of these conversations by modelling them in a cybernetic context. We present a case study for the formation of a Virtual Community for science teachers for the third Educational District in Athens, Greece, where learning conversations are being conducted in specially developed thematic collaboration rooms.

The modern business environment requires fast, efficient and reliable management of vast amounts of information and diverse data. A concrete solution for this problem can be provided by business intelligence systems, which support better and more effective communication among business customers and partners. In this paper, business intelligence systems are examined in the field of Virtual Enterprises, which, by default, require flexible and effective management and sharing of knowledge. The systemic methodology used in this context is Stafford Beer's Viable Systems Model (VSM), serving full exploitation of corporate knowledge and concluding to a Viable Virtual Enterprise Intelligence Decision Cycle.

A method of diagrammatic depiction of complex historical phenomena is presented. This method tries to reveal systemic patterns that are not always obvious in the usual written presentation of historical events. Moreover, the diagrams generated can be used to pivot important points in the flow of meaning. An important issue of modern Greek History is processed in this manner and its underlying systemic archetype is revealed.

The DCSYM is a systemic methodology with a robust mathematical and semantic understructure capable of effectively guiding multi-agent dialectic design processes concerning boundary critiques, structures, procedures and interventions. This methodology proposes a high-level design language, which enables effective synchronous and asynchronous multi-agent conversations. The outputs of DCSYM methodology are highly conceivable and comprehensive semantic diagrams with a consistent mathematical description that can be easily manipulated with the use of appropriate software. DCSYM is applied in the creation of the structural and procedural patterns of self-organised autonomous Virtual Communities (VCs) in the Greek secondary education.

The composition of systemic methodologies can result in powerful multimethodologies that effectively compensate complexity, combine different mental pictures and perspectives and handle diversity in a creative and innovative manner. Many systems, especially those involving multiple agents, profoundly limit the capability of traditional generic methods of analysis to devise and utilise interventions. In this paper, we demonstrate the effectiveness of a multimethodology designed to facilitate the creation of a knowledge exchange network among academic research teams in the University of Piraeus. The various stages of the methodology are presented in a progressive manner and the resulting intervention is discussed.
