Zircon is not a common accessory mineral of banded iron formation (BIF), but it occurs in all BIF samples from the Kostomuksha Greenstone Belt (KGB) in the Karelian Craton of the Fennoscandian Shield. The Kostomuksha BIF is of Algoma type and is part of three variably old rock associations: BIF-1 is part of a sedimentary sequence in Mesoarchean (2.87–2.84 Ga) basaltic komatiites with dacites, BIF-2 is located in Meso-Neoarchean (2.8–2.79 Ga) felsic volcanics, and BIF-3 is part of a Neoarchean (2.76–2.74 Ga) greywacke unit with felsic volcanics. Analysis of zircon has revealed grains with cores and several generations of rims. The U-Th-Pb systems of zircon indicate that its isotopic age varies considerably from 2.98 to 1.89 Ga, forming up to 4 age clusters in each sample. Most samples contain single inherited grains. The bulk of zircon in BIF is younger than the host rocks and is interpreted as metamorphic. Most of metamorphic zircons display an oscillatory zoning, and their Th/U ratio varies from 0.01 to 4.7, i.e. their origin is hard to interpret reliably, based on the above characteristics. Paleoproterozoic (1.89–1.85 Ga) zircons from BIF-1 and 3, occurring as rims and individual grains, are related to local tectono-thermal processes simultaneous with the formation of the Svecofennian orogen and were described for the central Karelian Craton for the first time. Thus, both inherited and metamorphic zircons have been revealed in Meso-Neoarchean BIF metamorphosed repeatedly in the Neoarchean-Paleoproterozoic under up to amphibolite-facies conditions. Two episodes of late Neoarchean-early Paleoproterozoic and late Paleoproterozoic garnet-bearing leucogranite, named the Baotou and Jining–Liangcheng garnet-bearing leucogranite are recognized from the Khondalite Belt in the North China Craton. Geochemical studies show that garnet-bearing leucogranite has high Al2O3 content and FeOT/MgO ratio, with a large variation in the CaO content and K2O/Na2O ratio. Additionally, the garnet-bearing leucogranite is enriched in light rare earth elements and large ion lithophile elements and depleted in Nb, Ta, P, and Ti. However, there are some variations in Eu anomalies, as indicated by the Eu-enriched and Eu-depleted patterns. The sensitive high-resolution ion microprobe (SHRIMP) zircon U-Pb dating of the Baotou garnet-bearing leucogranite and Jining–Liangcheng garnet-bearing leucogranite show that their anatectic ages were 2.35–2.43 Ga and 1.90–1.92 Ga, respectively, with zircon εHf (t) values of −0.01–3.93 and −4.36–1.99, and two-stage model ages (TDM2) of 2.76–3.02 Ga and 2.57–2.83 Ga, respectively. U-Th-Pb SHRIMP analyses on zircon reveal ages of ca. 2.35–2.47 Ga for the Baotou metapelite gneiss and ca. 1.90–1.91 Ga for the Jining–Liangcheng metapelite gneiss, which represent the ages of tectonic metamorphic events related to the anatexis. Our results, combined with geological and petrographical observations, geochemistry, and geochronology, suggest that (1) Garnet-bearing leucogranites formed as a result of anatexis of metapelite gneisses; (2) They are mixtures of leucosomes, residual minerals and mantle-derived materials; (3) Two episodes of garnet-bearing leucogranites have been identified; (4) Both two episodes of garnet-bearing leucogranites corresponded to late Neoarchean-early Paleoproterozoic and late Palaeoproterozoic tectonothermal events, respectively. Serious errors and inconsistencies in the article undermine many of its interpretations to the point that principal conclusions are not valid. Much dependence is placed on the maximum depositional age (Dmax) of sandstone units based on zircon analysis of 10 samples, but calculation of those Dmax values is flawed, and their use confuses maximum with actual depositional ages and makes age distinctions finer than the resolution of the data. Conclusions that are compromised include the concept of a westward/downward-younging tectonostratigraphic stack of accretionary units, comparison of mapped sandstones with other California Coast Ranges sandstones, comparison of timing of events recorded in the map area with regional events, identification of mélange only in a narrow band in the study area, and detrital provenance of some of the sandstone units. The means and timing of amalgamation of the Harlik arc to the Yemaquan arc remain controversial. To address these polemic relations, we report new field data and zircon U-Pb analyses of early Palaeozoic strata in the Harlik Mountains. Field investigations reveal that the Huangcaopo Group in northern Harlik are composed mainly of clastic rocks, while their counterparts in central Harlik (Harlik arc) are dominantly volcanic and pyroclastic rocks. Weighted mean ages of the youngest group of samples from northern Harlik are 455 ± 9 Ma and 456 ± 7 Ma, whereas their counterparts in central Harlik have a weighted mean age of 446 ± 4 Ma, indicating that parts of the Huangcaopo Group in central Harlik should be re-defined as the early Silurian Hongliuxia Formation. The youngest grain from the Dananhu Formation in central Harlik is 421 ± 3 Ma, the time of deposition in early Devonian. Age spectra of the Huangcaopo Group in northern Harlik have only two peaks at 488 Ma and 923 Ma, demonstrating affinity with the Tuva-Mongolian microcontinent, a correlation supported by the occurrence of Silurian Tuvaella brachiopod fauna in those strata. In contrast, multiple peaks at 494 Ma, 813 Ma, 1485 Ma, 1872 Ma and 2469 Ma in the Hongliuxia and Dananhu Formations in central Harlik have neither an affinity with the Tuva-Mongolian nor with the Central Tianshan microcontinent, which suggests that the Harlik arc probably evolved independently as a Japan-type arc in the early Palaeozoic. The above disparate relations, combined with the fact that the Silurian Tuvaella brachiopod fauna occurs throughout the Kelameili ophiolite belt but not in the Harlik arc, provide robust evidence that the contrasting provenance of the Yemaquan and Harlik arcs is an expression of a cryptic suture in northern Harlik rather than along the Kelameili ophiolite belt to the north. Sedimentary successions and igneous rocks exposed in Eastern Sayan provide an important geological record on the tectonic evolution of the southwestern margin of the Siberian Craton during the Neoproterozoic. Here we present sedimentological and detrital zircon provenance data from key stratigraphic units, complemented by a new U-Pb zircon age of 718 ± 6 Ma from the mafic Nersa magmatic complex. Sedimentological and provenance data from the lower part of the stratigraphic succession (Karagasy Group) show that these rocks were deposited in a passive margin setting after 750 Ma and before the emplacement of the Nersa magmatic complex. The upper part of the stratigraphic succession (Oselok Group) consists of Cryogenian and Ediacaran glaciogenic deposits and associated cap carbonates, overlain by mid to late Ediacaran sequences of dominantly shallow-marine and fluvial siliciclastic rocks. Provenance data indicate that rocks from the Tuva-Mongolia and Zavkhan terranes provided a significant input of detrital material into the sedimentary basin that was the source of the glacial deposits. Orogenic processes during the late Ediacaran (ca 570–540 Ma) in Eastern Sayan were likely associated with the accretion of the Tuva-Mongolia terrane, as indicated by the detrital zircon data. The gneisses outcropping in the Larsemann Hills of East Antarctica are ideal for studying the composition and evolution of the Prydz tectonic belt. In this study, detailed petrological analyses, phase equilibrium modelling, and zircon analyses were performed on a felsic orthogneiss from the Broknes Peninsula in the Larsemann Hills. The study results show that the protolith of the felsic gneiss is granite, which is further identified to have been an S-type granitoid. The felsic orthogneiss intruded into the basement complex at ~976 Ma. The magmatic zircons in the felsic orthogneiss have lower LREE and higher HREE contents than those of the metamorphic zircons in the same rock. The felsic gneiss consists of the mineral assemblage garnet +ilmenite+ plagioclase +K-feldspar + sillimanite + quartz and underwent granulite facies metamorphism in the Grenvillian period (～899 Ma), with peak conditions of ～870°C and ～9.5 kbar. The Larsemann Hills should be categorized as the orogenic process from arc-continent collision to continent-continent collision during the Grenvillian period, crust thickening(~899 Ma) and subsequent collapse(550–500 Ma). The Cenozoic sedimentary infill of the Qaidam Basin in the northern Tibetan Plateau provide significant insights into the uplift history and the tectonic evolution of the basin-bounding mountain ranges. Along the SW basin margin, a continuous record is preserved in the ~3000-m-thick Cenozoic succession at the Changweitai area. An up-section switch from marginal and deep lacustrine sedimentation to lacustrine delta-alluvial fan deposition indicates progradation and increasingly basinward advance of sediment transportation systems. Provenance data from sandstone petrology, palaeocurrent analysis and zircon U-Pb geochronology suggest that the Eastern Kunlun Range has been consistently providing material to the SW Qaidam basin since the deposition of the upper Xiaganchaigou Formation, indicating its latest uplift episode prior to the Late Eocene (before 35.5 Ma). However, variation in depositional systems indicates a clear shift in sediment provenance between the deposition of the Xiayoushashan Formation and the Shangyoushashan Formation. We propose that the Cenozoic Eastern Kunlun Range experienced a northward encroachment of shortening into the Qaidam Basin. During the Early Miocene, extensive topographic growth of the Altyn Tagh Range caused by reactivation of the Altyn Tagh strike-slip fault, provided the main source of sediment for the western Qaidam basin. The Yanliao Biota is notable for producing rare and well-preserved Jurassic vertebrate fossils. Many discoveries in the Bawanggou section, northern Hebei Province have greatly enhanced our knowledge of important vertebrate fossils from the Yanliao Biota, including an arboreal euharamiyidan mammal, maniraptoran theropods, salamanders and pterosaurs. However, lacking of precise dating for the sediments bearing these fossils in the Bawanggou section hampered further understanding of the evolution of this biota. Here we report a chronology based on secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) U-Pb zircon analyses from the Tiaojishan Formation bearing the Yanliao Biota in the Bawanggou section. Three bentonite layers dated to 159.0 ± 1.1 Ma, 159.5 ± 0.8 Ma, and 159.8 ± 0.8 Ma, respectively, were found to be interstratified with the fossil-bearing layer in this area. These data place the Yanliao Biota from Qinglong in the Oxfordian Stage of the Upper Jurassic and provide stringent constraints on vertebrates discovered in the Bawanggou section. Previous biostratigraphic studies and our geochronology show that fossil assemblage in the Bawanggou section is coeval with the Linglongta Biota (late Yanliao Biota) preserved in the Daxishan section (western Liaoning Province). Neoproterozoic I-type granites could provide vital insights into the crust–mantle interaction and the crustal evolution along the western Yangtze Block, South China. This paper presents new zircon U–Pb ages, bulk-rock geochemistry, and in situ zircon Lu–Hf isotope on the Dalu I-type granites from the southwestern Yangtze Block. Zircon U–Pb dating show the crystallization ages of 781.1 ± 2.8 Ma for granodiorites and 779.8 ± 2.0 Ma for granites, respectively. The Dalu granodiorites are Na-rich, calc-alkaline, metaluminous to slightly peraluminous (A/CNK = 0.94–1.08). Zircons from granodiorite have positive εHf(t) values (+2.16 to +7.39) with crustal model ages of 1.21–1.54 Ga, indicating juvenile mafic lower crust source. The Dalu granites are high-K calc-alkaline, peraluminous rocks. They have variable zircon εHf(t) values (−4.65 to +5.80) with crustal model ages of 1.31–1.97 Ga, suggesting that they were derived from the mature metasediment-derived melts by the mixing of newly formed mafic lower crust-derived melts. The geochemical variations in Dalu pluton is dominated not only by the different source rocks but also by the different melting temperatures. Combining with the geochemistry and isotopic compositions of I-type granitoids and tectonic setting in the western Yangtze Block, we propose that the Dalu I-type granodiorites–granites associations are the magmatic response from different crustal levels, which were induced by the heat anomaly due to the asthenosphere upwelling in the subduction-related setting. This study reports new zircon U-Pb ages, Lu-Hf isotope data, and oxygen isotope data forMesozoicMobearing granitoids in the eastern Xing-Meng Orogenic Belt (XMOB) of Northeast China, within the eastern Central Asian Orogenic Belt. Combining these new laser ablation-inductively coupled plasmamass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) zircon U-Pb ages with the results of previous research indicates that two stages of Mo-bearing granitoid magmatism occurred in the eastern XMOB, during the Early--Middle Jurassic (200-165 Ma) and the Early Cretaceous (ca. 111 Ma). The eastern XMOB also contains Mobearing granitoids with variable δ18O compositions that record variations in source oxygen isotopic compositions. Combining δ18O data with zircon U-Pb and Hf isotopic data provides evidence of the origin of these granitoids. Three types of zircon have been identified within these granitoids. Type 1 zircons formed during the Mesozoic and having high δ18O values (5.71-7.05‰) that are consistent with the compositions of magmatic zircons from the Luming, Jiapigou, and Kanchuangou areas. These zircons suggest that the Mo-bearing granitoids were derived from a source containing supracrustal materials. The type 2 zircons have extremely low and heterogeneous δ18O values (4.64-4.89‰) that are consistent with the compositions of magmatic zircons from the Jidetun and Fuanpu areas. These magmas were generated by the remelting of juvenile crustal material that was previously significantly modified by interaction with fluids. Type 3 zircons generally havemantle-like δ18O values (5.42-5.57‰), with several zircons yielding higher δ18O values, suggesting that these intrusions formed from mantlederived magmas that assimilated and were metasomatized by crustal material. Combining these geochemical data with the geology of this region indicates that the Mo-bearing granitoids were generated as a result of subduction of the Palaeo-Pacific Plate beneath the Eurasian continent. Uranium-lead ages are reported for zircons from ultramafic bodies and metamorphic host rocks of the Western Series that outcrop at La Cabaña, in the southern section of the coastal accretionary complex of central Chile. Metasedimentary mica schists hosting the ultramafic bodies contain a main detrital zircon population of Devonian age (365-380 Ma) clustering around ~368 Ma, differing significantly from neighbouring areas where Devonian zircons are scarce. Zircons from the metasomatic reaction zones (albitites and chloritites), formed during the emplacement and alteration of the ultramafic bodies, are mainly Ordovician (~478 Ma) and lack Devonian zircons, resembling a typical detrital zircon pattern from other locations in the Western Series. Zircons from the chloritite reaction zone of the Lavanderos serpentinite, the easternmost ultramafic body in La Cabaña, are in textural equilibrium with metamorphic ilmenite. Some of these zircons yield an average age of 283.4 ± 7 Ma (n = 6) which is identical, within error, to a previously reported K-Ar fuchsite cooling age of 282 ± 6 Ma from the reaction zone. Most zircons extracted from chromitite boulders have euhedral oscillatory-zoned growth patterns with a similar range of ages than those reported for the Western Series (324-1090 Ma; n = 12), except for two zircons with cloudy appearance and high U/Th ratios which yielded an average age of 285.5 ± 7 Ma. The presence of Early Permian zircons (~280-290 Ma) in all studied rocks suggests remobilization of Zr, possibly triggered by metasomatic fluids released during the disequilibrium reaction associated with the tectonic emplacement of the ultramafic rocks into the metasedimentary rock. Simultaneously with the formation of metasomatic zircons, Palaeozoic and Mesoproterozoic zircons from the metasedimentary rocks were mechanically incorporated into the ultramafic rocks, thus providing a record of the timing of crustal emplacement of the ultramafic rocks into the accretionary complex. The Roshtkhar area is located in the Khaf-Kashmar-Bardaskan volcano-plutonic belt to the northeastern Iran along the regional E-W trending Dorouneh Fault, northeastern of the Lut Block. There are several outcrops of subvolcanic rocks occurring mainly as dikes in the area, which intruded into Cenozoic intrusive rocks. We present U-Pb dating of zircons from a diabase dike and syenite rock using LA-ICP-MS that yielded an age of 1778 ± 10 Ma for the dike, indicating this Cenozoic dike has zircon xenocrysts inherited from deeper sources; and 38.0 ± 0.5 Ma, indicating an Late Eocene crystallization age for the syenite. Geochemically, the dikes typical of high-K calc-alkaline to shoshonitic magmas. Petrographic observations and major and trace element variations suggest that diabase melts underwent variable fractionation of clinopyroxene, olivine, and Fe-Ti oxides and minor crustal contamination during the differentiation process. Primitive mantle-normalized multi-element diagrams display enrichment in LILE, such as Rb, Ba, Th, U, and Sr compared to HFSE, as well as negative anomalies of Nb, Ta, P, and Ti, suggesting derivation from subduction-modified mantle. Chondrite-normalized REE plots show moderately LREE enriched patterns (<3.83 LaN/YbN <8.27), and no significant Eu anomalies. Geochemical modelling using Sm/Yb versus La/Yb and La/Sm ratios suggests a low-degree of batch melting (~1-3%) of a phlogopite-spinel peridotite source to generate the mafic dikes. The geochemical signatures suggest that the Roshtkhar mafic dikes cannot be related directly to subduction and likely resulted from melting of upper mantle in an extensional setting where the heat flow was provided from deeper levels. These dikes presumably derived the zircon xenocrysts from the assimilation of upper crust of Gondwanian basement. Processes responsible for partial melting of metasomatized lithospheric mantle and post-collision magmatism in NE Iran was triggered by heating due to asthenospheric upwelling in an extensional setting. The involvement of the North China Craton (NCC) in the assembly or breakup of Rodinia has long been debated. Studies of palaeomagnetism, mafic sills (dikes), igneous events, and sedimentary records have led to contrasting opinions on this topic. No igneous events related to the late Mesoproterozoic assembly of Rodinia have been reported in the NCC. However, the authors found numerous late Mesoproterozoic zircons in the Tonian system on the northern margin of the NCC. The Tonian Zhulazhagamaodao formation is composed of meta-sandstone, siltstone, slate, carbonate, and dolomine of the littoral to neritic facies and occurs mainly in the western part of the Bayan Obo-Zhaertai-Langshan rift. U-Pb dating of detrital zircons from the Tonian system reveals age peaks at 1079 ± 23 Ma, 1092 ± 22 Ma, 1175 ± 50 Ma, 1175 ± 18 Ma, 1260 ± 45 Ma, 1266 ± 16 Ma, and 1270 ± 26 Ma, which correspond to the timing of Rodinia assembly. Considering that coeval igneous rocks and orogenic belts developed mostly in the Laurentia-Baltica cratons, we propose that these cratons supplied clastic material to the northern margin of the NCC and that they had a close spatial relationship between each other during the Tonian. The timing and extent of cratonic destruction are crucial to understanding the crustal evolution of the North China Craton (NCC). Zircon U–Pb–Hf isotope data and the whole-rock major and trace element characteristics of the Huyu igneous rocks in northwestern Beijing, China, provide possible new evidence for the initial destruction of the NCC. The igneous rocks occur as several sills and dikes, including lamprophyre, monzonite porphyry, and aplite. The lamprophyres have high Mg#and K2O contents. The monzonite porphyries have high Mg#, high K2O contents, and negativeεHf(t) values with zircon U–Pb ages of 225.5–227.7 Ma. These two types of rocks are both enriched in large ion lithosphere elements (LILEs) and light rare earth elements (LREEs) but are depleted in high field strength elements (HFSEs) and high rare earth elements (HREEs) and have almost no Eu anomalies and relatively high total rare earth element (ΣREE) contents. In contrast, the aplites exhibit high silica and K2O contents, low MgO contents, and more negativeεHf(t) values with a zircon U–Pb age of 206.2 Ma. The aplites are also enriched in LILEs and LREEs but are depleted in HFSEs and HREEs, with strongly negative Eu, Ti, P, La, Ce, and Sr anomalies and relatively low ΣREE contents. These results indicate that the lamprophyres and monzonite porphyries represent a continuous cogenetic magma evolution series after melt derived from an enriched metasomatized lithospheric mantle experienced crust assimilation and fractional crystallization. The aplites were produced by the fractional crystallization of low-Mg parental magma derived from melting of the ancient Archaean crust. The occurrence of the Huyu intrusive rocks with many other plutons of similar ages on the northern margin of the NCC suggests that the northern NCC entered an intraplate extensional tectonic environment in the Late Triassic. Geological mapping and zircon U–Pb laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) dating has identified a Mesoarchean (2857 ± 17 Ma) geological unit in the Luanjiajie area of the northern margin of the North China Craton, within the northern part of Liaoning Province, China. This unit is dominated by tonalitic and trondhjemite gneisses that form part of a typical tonalite–trondhjemite–granodiorite (TTG) rock assemblage. These Mesoarchean gneisses are enriched in Na and depleted in K, yield K2O/Na2O ratios of 0.34–0.50, have Rittmann index (σ) values of 1.54–3.04, and are calc-alkaline. They have EuN/EuN* values of 0.77–1.20 (average of 1.03), indicating that these samples have negligible Eu anomalies, and yield high LaN/YbNvalues (4.92–23.12). These characteristics indicate that these Mesoarchean gneisses have fractionated rare earth element (REE) compositions that are enriched in the light REE (LREE) and depleted in the heavy REE (HREE), with steeply dipping chondrite-normalized REE patterns. These gneisses are also enriched in Rb, Th, K, Zr, and Hf, and are relatively depleted in Ta, Nb, P, and Ti. In summary, the magma that formed these tonalitic and trondhjemite gneisses was most likely derived from the partial melting of lower-crustal basaltic rocks during subduction. The timing of formation (2.85 Ga) of the Luanjiajie tonalite and trondhjemite gneisses probably represents the timing of initiation of plate tectonics within the LongGang Block during a SE-directed subduction event. The presence of inherited zircons with ages of >3.0 Ga within the Luanjiajie gneisses suggests that this area may contain as yet undiscovered rocks that formed before 3.0 Ga. The Tarbagatay Complex, located in northwest Junggar, is situated tectonically between the Zharma–Saur arc to the north and the Tacheng terrane and the Boshchekol–Chingiz arc to the south. This Complex belt is variably composed of ophiolitic mélange, sedimentary mélange, and coherent units of turbidites and shallow water sediments. These rocks crop out in fault-bound slices with fault-parallel asymmetric folds. Both the lithologies and deformation features of the Tarbagatay Complex suggest an accretionary origin generally with a top-to-the-south tectonic vergence, suggesting N-dipping subduction beneath the Zharma–Saur arc. The presence of a former ocean is indicated by the Ordovician ophiolite mélanges and related marine fossils. The time duration of the Tarbagatay Complex can be bracketed by detrital zircon ages of turbidites and shallow water sediments with a lower limit of major peak ages of 350–370 Ma, and an upper limit of middle Permian indicated by detrital zircon ages of 262.3 Ma. Based on these data, we suggest that the subduction of the Tarbagatay Ocean likely started in the Late Devonian and lasted until the middle Permian. Taking into account the formation of the northern part of the Kazakhstan orocline, which has a similar temporal-spatial framework, we propose a tectonic model for the western CAOB that involves accretion and amalgamation from the Ordovician to the middle Permian. Liaoning Province in China is an area known for the occurrence of numerous copper and/or molybdenum deposits of variable size. However, the age of mineralization and tectonic setting in this region are still a subject of debate. In this study we describe the geology of these deposits and apply zircon U–Pb and molybdenite Re–Os isotopic dating to constrain their ages and define the metallogenic epochs of this province. The Huatong Cu–Mo deposit yields molybdenite Re–Os model ages of 127.6–126.3 Ma and an isochron age of 127.4 ± 0.7 Ma. The Dongbeigou Mo deposit yields molybdenite Re–Os model ages of 132.6–127.1 Ma, an isochron age of 128.1 ± 5.1 Ma, and a zircon U–Pb age of 129.4 ± 0.3 Ma for the associated monzogranite. The granodiorite associated with the Wanbaoyuan Cu–Mo deposit yields a zircon U–Pb age of 128.4 ± 1.1 Ma; the plagiogranite associated with the Yaojiagou Mo deposit yields an age of 167.5 ± 0.9 Ma; and the biotite–plagioclase gneiss from the Shujigou Cu deposit yields an age of 2549.4 ± 5.6 Ma. These results, together with previous geochronology data, show that intense Cu–Mo porphyry and skarn mineralization were coeval with Early–Middle Jurassic and Early Cretaceous granitic magmatism. The former was associated with the orogeny that followed the collision of the Siberian and North China plates and the resulting closure of the palaeo-Asian Ocean, and the latter with rifting that followed the subduction of the palaeo-Pacific Plate and associated lithospheric thinning. Volcanogenic massive sulfide Cu deposit. mineralization took place much earlier, in the late Archaean, and was related to continent–continent collision, palaeo-ocean closure, the formation of a united continental landmass, bimodal volcanism, magma emplacement, and subsequent metamorphism and deformation of syn-collisional granites. This article reports the results of field mapping and the petrology of clastic rocks in the Dabure area, southern Qiangtang, Tibet, together with the results of U–Pb dating of detrital zircons from these rocks. The Dabure clastic rocks are characterized by low compositional and textural maturity, and they have been affected by lower greenschist facies metamorphism. The deposits exhibit the typical features of turbidites. Altogether, 279 detrital zircons were selected for U–Pb dating, and the ages fall into five groups: 550–650, ~800, 900–1100, 1600–1800, and 2300–2500 Ma. In general, the ages of the detrital zircons that are older than ~550 Ma are similar to those found elsewhere in the southern Qiangtang and Himalayan terranes. The most reliable youngest age of a detrital zircon from the Dabure clastic rocks is ~550 Ma. In the southern part of the Tibet Plateau, strata with the same ages and lithologies as the Dabure clastic rocks are widespread, especially in the Himalayan terrane. Combining our data with previous work on the basalts in the Dabure area (the Dabure basalts), we tentatively suggest that the Dabure clastic rocks represent the late Ediacaran (~550 Ma) sedimentary record for the Qiangtang terrane, and that before the late Neoproterozoic the southern Qiangtang terrane was possibly connected to the Himalayan terrane. New zircon laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry and secondary ion mass spectroscopy U–Pb ages, and Hf isotope and whole-rock geochemical data are reported for Mesozoic igneous rocks from the eastern margin of the Songnen–Zhangguangcai Range Massif, Northeast China, in order to document the petrogenesis of the igneous rocks and reconstruct the early Mesozoic tectonic setting of the region. Zircons from five representative igneous rocks are euhedral–subhedral and display oscillatory growth zoning or striped absorption in cathodoluminescence images, suggesting a magmatic origin. The dating results indicate that granite, gabbro, and rhyolite from the eastern Songnen–Zhangguangcai Range Massif formed during Late Triassic (204–211 Ma). The Late Triassic granitoids and rhyolites have an affinity to A-type granites or rhyolites. Their zirconεHf(t) values and Hf two-stage model ages range from –3.8 to +3.8 and from 999 to 1485 Ma, respectively, indicating that their primary melts were derived from the partial melting of the Meso-Proterozoic crust. The geochemistry of coeval gabbros, which reflects primary magma composition, shows a significant large ion lithophile element (e.g. Ba and Sr) enrichment and high field strength element (i.e. Zr, Hf, Nb, Ta, and Ti) depletion. Based on zirconεHf(t) values (–4.2 to +2.8) and Hf single-stage model ages (746–1031 Ma), we conclude that the mafic magma is the product of partial melting of lithospheric mantle that was metasomatically enriched by fluids derived from the subducted oceanic crust. The Late Triassic magmatism along the eastern margin of the Eurasian continent has bimodal magma compositions, indicating an extensional setting after the final closure of the Palaeo-Asian Ocean rather than being related to subduction of the Palaeo-Pacific Plate beneath the Eurasian continent. The occurrence of Late Triassic igneous rocks on the eastern side of the Mudanjiang Fault suggests that this fault does not represent the suture zone between the Songnen–Zhangguangcai Range and Jiamusi massifs. In this article, we presentin situU–Pb and Lu–Hf isotope data for Upper Triassic detritus in the Sichuan region of northwestern South China, which was a foreland basin during the Late Triassic. The aim is to determine the provenance of sediments in the foreland basin and to constrain the evolution of the surrounding mountain belts. U–Pb age data for the Late Triassic detrital zircons generally show populations at 2.4–2.6 Ga, 1.7–1.9 Ga, 710–860 Ma, 410–460 Ma, and 210–300 Ma. By fitting the zircon data into the tectonic, sedimentologic, and palaeographic framework, we propose that the north Yangtze Block and South Qinling–Dabie Orogen were the important source areas of sediments in the northern part of the foreland basin, whereas the Longmen Shan thrust-fold belt was the main source region for detritus in other parts of the foreland basin. The South Qinling–Dabie Orogen could also have served as a physical barrier to block most detritus shed from the southern North China Block into the foreland basin during the sedimentation of the Xujiahe Formation. Our results also reveal that part of the flysch from the eastern margin of the Songpan–Ganzi region had been displaced into the Longmen Shan thrust-fold belt before the deposition of the foreland basin sediments. The petrogenesis and geodynamic setting of magmatic rocks in Eastern Tianshan, Xinjiang, are attracting increasing attention. This study explores these issues by providing SHRIMP zircon U–Pb dating, and element geochemical and Hf isotope data of magmatic rocks exposed in the Yandong region of Eastern Tianshan, Xinjiang. SHRIMP zircon U–Pb dating data indicate that the magmatic activities occurred around 335 Ma, and that mineralization of the Yandong porphyry Cu deposit occurred during the same period as that of the rock formation in the region or slightly later. All the magmatic rocks in Yandong are sub-alkaline or high-K, calc-alkaline with A/CNK values ranging from 0.91 to 2.70, enriched in K, Rb, and Ba and clearly depleted in Nb, Ta, P, Ti, and Th, and have geochemical characteristics typical of adakites (i.e, high Al2O3, high La/Yb ratios and Sr contents, low Y and HREE contents, and positive Eu anomalies).In situHf isotopic analyses of zircons that had previously been dated by SHRIMP yielded positive initial εHf(t) values ranging from +9.4 to +15.8. We suggest that the Palaeo-Tianshan oceanic crust subducted northward beneath the Dananhu-Tousuquan arc belt during the early Carboniferous, and the Yandong magmatic rocks were induced by partial melting of the subducted Palaeo-Tianshan oceanic slab, subsequently having been hybridized by peridotite in the mantle wedge.
