The late Paleozoic tectonic evolution of the Lhasa terrane and subduction of Sumdo Paleo-Tethys ocean remains controversial due to limited data and variable Permian magmatism in central and southern Lhasa. We report new zircon U–Pb ages and Hf-isotope ratios as well as whole-rock major element, trace element, and Sr–Nd isotope data from middle Permian (266 ~ 257 Ma) arc-related magmatism, including high-Mg quartz diorite and trondhjemite in the Tangjia-Sumdo area. The quartz diorite has high SiO2 (53.92–57.90 wt.%), MgO (3.69–8.03 wt.%) and low TiO2 (0.60–1.01 wt.%) contents. It is enriched in the large ion lithophile elements (LILEs, e.g. Rb, Ba, Sr) and depleted in the high field strength elements (HFSEs, e.g. Nb, Ta, Ti). We interpreted these chemical features, in combination with uniform whole-rock (87Sr/86Sr)i (0.70375–0.70452), εNd(t) (+4.48 – +5.55), and zircon εHf(t) (+11.2 – +13.7) values, as indicative of dioritic melt derived by the interaction of fluids expelled from the subducting slab with the overlying mantle wedge in an island arc setting. The trondhjemite has high SiO2 (71.16–73.52 wt.%), Al2O3 (14.92–16.24 wt.%) and K2O + Na2O (7.34–8.27 wt.%) contents, is enriched in the light rare-earth elements (LREEs) and is depleted in Th and heavy rare-earth elements (HREEs). These rocks are characterized by positive εNd(t) (+5.91 – +6.68) and εHf(t) (+12.0 – +16.1) values and may have been derived from partial melting of subducted oceanic crust. Based on the elemental and isotopic composition of the quartz diorite and trondhjemite, we suggest that middle Permian magmatism occurred in an intra-oceanic subduction setting in the Sumdo Paleo-Tethys ocean. The Sumdo Paleo-Tethys ocean was probably a small ocean basin within the eastern Lhasa terrane and not a vast ocean basin that completely separated central Lhasa from the southern Lhasa subterrane. The palaeogeographic locations of ancient continental blocks in the Tibetan Plateau, especially of micro-continental blocks during the Neoproterozoic supercontinent cycle, remain enigmatic. To clarify the petrogenesis of Neoproterozoic granitic gneisses and the early evolution of the Amdo micro-continent, we conducted an integrated study of the petrography, geochronology, and geochemistry of biotite monzonitic gneisses from the Precambrian metamorphic basement. The biotite monzonitic gneiss sample yielded a weighted mean zircon U–Pb age of 820 ± 11 Ma, indicating an early Neoproterozoic magmatic event. All gneiss samples show enrichment in light rare-earth elements and depletion in high-field-strength elements in N-MORB-normalized spider diagrams, which suggests that their precursor magma was generated in a subduction-related active continental margin. In addition, these rocks have mostly positive εHf(t) values (−1.0 to 7.0) and corresponding crustal model ages of 1.3 − 1.8 Ga. Zircon Hf isotopes and whole-rock geochemistry indicate that the gneisses were derived from partial melting of juvenile crust material. Recently published age spectra of detrital zircons from different blocks suggest that the Amdo micro-continent had a closer affinity to the Lhasa terrane than to the Qiangtang terrane prior to and during the break-up of the Rodinian supercontinent. However, the gneisses are geochemically distinct from back-arc magmatic rocks in the Lhasa terrane and similar to coeval Andean-type magmatic rocks in blocks that constituted the northwestern margin of Rodinia (including Madagascar, Seychelles, and Malani). Previous studies of the Southern Qiangtang (SQ) Terrane in Tibet have shown significant growth of continental crust during the late Mesozoic (ca. 170–120 Ma) through underplating of mantle-derived melts beneath ancient lower crust. However, the mechanism of crustal growth remains defective during the Late Jurassic. In this contribution, we report new zircon U–Pb ages, whole-rock major and trace element concentrations, and zircon Hf isotopic compositions of Late Jurassic rhyolites from the Duobuza area in the SQ Terrane. Zircon LA–ICP–MS U–Pb dating yields concordant ages and weighted mean 206Pb/238U ages of 151–149 Ma, indicating that the rhyolites were erupted during the Late Jurassic. The rhyolite samples yield high SiO2 (69.1–73.4 wt.%) and Na2O (3.82–6.49 wt.%) concentrations, high values of the differentiation index (95.4–98.5), moderate Al2O3 (13.1–15.5 wt.%) and K2O (2.55–3.26 wt.%) concentrations, and relatively low TiO2 (0.34–0.44 wt.%), MgO (0.14–0.67 wt.%), and MnO (0.01–0.10 wt.%) concentrations and Mg# values (8.9–33.5). They are enriched in Rb, Th, Ba, and Pb, depleted in Nb, Ta, Sr, Ti, and P, and yield negative Eu anomalies. These characteristics suggest that the Duobuza rhyolites represent medium- to high-K calc-alkaline, highly fractionated I-type granitoids. Variations in major and trace element concentrations indicate that the rhyolites underwent significant fractionation of Fe–Ti oxides, plagioclase, K-feldspar, hornblende, biotite, and apatite. The samples yield positive zircon εHf(t) values (+0.08 to +10.9) and young TCDM model ages (816–386 Ma), indicating that they were generated through partial melting of juvenile lower crust of the SQ Terrane. These data are distinct from those of Late Jurassic intermediate–felsic plutons in the SQ Terrane that generally yield negative εHf(t) values and ancient TCDM model ages. We suggest that the occurrence of the Duobuza rhyolites is the significant witness. The presence of juvenile lower crust beneath the SQ Terrane during the Late Jurassic (ca. 150 Ma) rather than during the Early Cretaceous (ca. 120Ma). To determine the Late Palaeozoic evolution of the Lhasa terrane, we report the results of field mapping, petrological and fossil investigations, and U–Pb dating of detrital zircon grains (n = 474) from lower-greenschist-facies clastic rocks of the Lagar Formation in the Baruo area, Tibet. Our results indicate that the Lagar Formation was deposited during the Late Carboniferous to Early Permian in a shallow-marine environment on the northern margin of Gondwana. Glacial marine diamictites are common within the Lagar Formation and record glaciation of Gondwana during the Late Palaeozoic. Moreover, the detrital materials of the Lagar formation originated mostly from the collision orogenic belt. The ages of detrital zircon grains from the Lagar Formation make up five main groups with ages of 410–540 Ma, 550–650 Ma, 800–1100 Ma, 1600–1800 Ma, and 2300–2500 Ma, which display three characteristic age peaks at ~1150, 2390 and 2648 Ma. We present our new investigation into the depositional environment and provenance of the Yingshuiquan Formation in the central Qiangtang region of northern Tibet, in order to further our understanding of the environment of the Longmu Co-Shuanghu Palaeo-Tethys during the Early Triassic. The Yingshuiquan Formation is composed of oolitic limestone, calcareous sandstone, calcarenite, thin-bedded ribbon limestone, bioclastic limestone, and coarse oolite limestone that were deposited in a shallow-marine basin and contain abundant Lower Triassic conodont fossils (e.g. Hadrodontina anceps, Pachycladina sp., gen. et sp, Pachyclaina oblique, Hibbardelloides sp). We selected detrital zircons from four calcareous sandstone samples for U-Pb dating, yielding minimum age peaks of 263, 269, 275, and 280 Ma, respectively, and a minimum age of 249 Ma, based on several zircons around the same age. Analysis of the conodont biofacies and zircon LA-ICP-MS dating of calcareous sandstone indicates that the data is consistent with deposition in the Early Triassic. The Yingshuiquan Formation records Early Triassic shallow-water sediment in the Longmu Co-Shuanghu Palaeo-Tethys, and has a Southern Qiangtang and Northern Qiangtang terranes provenance. During the Early Triassic, the carbonate sediments of the Yingshuiquan Formation were deposited in an active environment around the Longmu Co-Shuanghu Palaeo-Tethys, which has became a residual sea basin. Zircon U-Pb dating of two samples of metagabbro from the Riwanchaka ophiolite yielded early Carboniferous ages of 354.4 ± 2.3 Ma and 356.7 ± 1.9 Ma. Their positive zircon εHf(t) values (+7.9 to +9.9) indicate that these rocks were derived from a relatively depleted mantle. The metagabbros can be considered as two types: R1 and R2. Both types are tholeiitic, with depletion of highfield- strength elements (HFSE) and enrichment of large-ion lithophile elements (LILE) similar to those of typical back-arc basin basalts (BABB), such as Mariana BABB and East Scotia Ridge BABB. Geochemical and isotopic characteristics indicate that the R1 metagabbro originated from a backarc basin spreading ridge with addition of slab-derived fluids, whereas the R2 metagabbro was derived from a back-arc basin mantle source, with involvement of melts and fluids from subducted ocean crust. The Riwanchaka ophiolite exhibits both mid-ocean ridge basalts- and arc-like geochemical affinities, consistent with coeval ophiolites from central Qiangtang. Observations indicate that the Qiangtang ophiolites developed during the Late Devonian-early Carboniferous (D3-C1) in a back-arc spreading ridge above an intra-oceanic subduction zone. Based on our data and previous studies, we propose that an oceanic back-arc basin system existed in the Longmuco-Shuanghu-Lancang Palaeo-Tethys Ocean during the D3-C1 period. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A newly discovered Devonian ophiolite located in the Taoxinghu area of central Qiangtang on the Qinhai–Tibet Plateau is described. The ophiolite consists of gabbro and diabasic dikes, and invasive cumulate gabbros-leucogabbros. The ophiolite has undergone greenschist facies metamorphism and minor deformation. Dating of the metagabbro by laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) zircon U–Pb techniques yielded a weighted mean age of 367.2 ± 3.3 Ma (Late Devonian). Whole-rock geochemical analyses show that the rocks belong to the tholeiite series, with weak depletion in light rare-earth elements (LREEs), almost no Eu anomalies, weak enrichment in large-ion lithophile elements (LILEs), depletion in Nb and Ta, and weak negative Hf and Ti anomalies. These characteristics are similar to those of back-arc basin basalts. Together, these characteristics suggest that the rocks of the Devonian ophiolite formed by ~30% partial melting of spinel lherzolite, which was enriched by interaction with aqueous fluids during the late-generation phases; there is no evidence of subduction-related melting. The Devonian ophiolite rocks in the Taoxinghu area were first discovered in the LongmuCo–Shuanghu–Lancang suture zone. Detailed geochemical analyses show that the rocks formed in a back-arc ocean basin environment, indicating that the LongmuCo–Shuanghu–Lancang suture zone in central Qiangtang represents a Late Devonian intra-oceanic subduction zone in the Palaeo–Tethys Ocean. The discovery of the central Qiangtang Devonian ophiolite provides essential data for understanding the evolutionary history of the Palaeo–Tethys Ocean, and for identifying and understanding the roles of the different tectonic units on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau. This article reports the depositional environment and provenance for the Tianquanshan Formation in the Longmuco–Shuanghu–Lancangjiang suture zone, and uses these to better understand the tectonic evolution of this region. Zircons in the andesite of the Tianquanshan Formation yielded concordia ages of 246, 247, and 254 Ma, indicating that the Tianquanshan Formation formed during the late Permian–Early Triassic. The Tianquanshan Formation consists of flysch and ocean island rock assemblages, indicating that the Longmuco–Shuanghu–Lancangjiang Palaeo-Tethys Ocean continued to exist as a mature ocean in the late Permian–Early Triassic. The detrital zircons in the greywackes of the Tianquanshan Formation yielded peak ages of 470–620, 710–830, 910–1080, 1450–1660, and 2400–2650 Ma, indicating the provenance of the Tianquanshan Formation was either Indian Gondwana or terranes that have an affinity with Indian Gondwana in the Tibetan Plateau (i.e. the Southern Qiangtang, Lhasa, and Himalayan terranes). The Ordovician quartzites, Carboniferous sandstones, Carboniferous–Permian diamictites, and the Upper Permian–Lower Triassic greywackes in the Southern Qiangtang, Lhasa, and Himalayan terranes all contain detrital zircons with youngest ages of ca. 470 Ma, indicating their source areas have been in a stable tectonic environment since the Ordovician, and this inference is supported by the continuous deposition in a littoral–neritic passive margin in these regions from the Ordovician to the lower Permian. Combining the present results with regional geological data, we infer that the Southern Qiangtang, Lhasa, and Himalayan terranes were all in a stable passive continental margin along the northern part of Indian Gondwana during the long period from the Ordovician to the early Permian. This article reports the results of field mapping and the petrology of clastic rocks in the Dabure area, southern Qiangtang, Tibet, together with the results of U–Pb dating of detrital zircons from these rocks. The Dabure clastic rocks are characterized by low compositional and textural maturity, and they have been affected by lower greenschist facies metamorphism. The deposits exhibit the typical features of turbidites. Altogether, 279 detrital zircons were selected for U–Pb dating, and the ages fall into five groups: 550–650, ~800, 900–1100, 1600–1800, and 2300–2500 Ma. In general, the ages of the detrital zircons that are older than ~550 Ma are similar to those found elsewhere in the southern Qiangtang and Himalayan terranes. The most reliable youngest age of a detrital zircon from the Dabure clastic rocks is ~550 Ma. In the southern part of the Tibet Plateau, strata with the same ages and lithologies as the Dabure clastic rocks are widespread, especially in the Himalayan terrane. Combining our data with previous work on the basalts in the Dabure area (the Dabure basalts), we tentatively suggest that the Dabure clastic rocks represent the late Ediacaran (~550 Ma) sedimentary record for the Qiangtang terrane, and that before the late Neoproterozoic the southern Qiangtang terrane was possibly connected to the Himalayan terrane. A large mafic dike swarm is radially distributed in southern Qiangtang. Three typical samples were selected for geochronology, geochemistry, and Hf isotopic analysis. Zircon U–Pb dating indicates that the three dikes formed at 291 ± 2, 292 ± 3, and 300 ± 2 Ma. Whole-rock compositions show that the southern Qiangtang mafic dikes are alkaline, Fe + Ti rich, and exhibit relative enrichment in light rare-earth elements. The ratios of incompatible elements are similar to those of oceanic island and Emeishan basalts. Geochemical diagrams show that the dikes erupted in an intraplate environment. Zircon Hf isotopic data suggest that magma that produced the mafic dikes was derived from a depleted mantle source. The geochemical characteristics of the dikes approximate that of eruption products of a brief period of mantle plume activity (300–280 Ma). According to eight geologic maps of Qiangtang, the mafic dikes crop out over an area of 150 km from north to south and 500 km from east to west, radiating outward from Mayigangri. We conclude that the mafic dikes in southern Qiangtang are related to the combined effect of Permian plate motions and mantle plume activity, and the Mayigangri area overlies the hot spot.
