Gaming activities are an integral part of the human learning process, in particular for children. Game-based learning focuses on motivation and children's engagement towards learning. Educational game-based activities are becoming effective strategies to enhance the learning process. This paper presents an educational activity focusing to merge mobile computing devices and Augmented Reality, as a means to engage student in collaborative learning towards the Aesthetical Periods of Music History. The Musical Peddy-paper proposes student to use their mobile computing devices (smartphones/ tablets) to find eight stations scattered in a set location, and then use their music literacy skills to find the correct answer in each station. Collaborative work is required to find the stations and the answers to the clues. The musical Peddy-paper was developed mixing Geo-location and Augmented Reality concepts. Geo-location Points of Interest (POI's) where set through Hoppala platform. Augmented Reality browsing and QRCode reading is supported by the LAYAR platform. In this paper, we introduce the concept of game-based activities as a tool to promote motivation and engagement towards learning, and fully explain the development process of the activity. We conclude this paper presenting the conclusions contemplating the use of this activity among a group of children from the 2nd Cycle of Basic Education in Basic School Maria Manuela de Sá, Matosinhos-Portugal. This paper reports on literature related to the assessment of barriers to educational technology assessment. It surveys the development of technology acceptance models from social cognitive theory and innovation diffusion theory through to a unified theory that considers performance expectancy, effort expectancy, and social influence. Because risk is a significant factor in technology assessment, this paper outlines risk assessment processes, beginning with the Fine-Kinney method through to derivation of a risk matrix. Finally, it considers factors related to the validation of technology acceptance survey assessments. [For the full proceedings, see ED665357.]

Technology to support collaborative learning has come a long way. Interactive tabletops support collaboration when correctly integrated in activity design. While these devices can now, in principle, be purchased by the general public, wide adoption in schools is hindered by their high cost and lack of mobility. In this paper, we analyze the potential technologies that could replace such devices. After developing a dozen prototypes to further test the potential of the most promising technologies, we found one robust, affordable and accurate solution: SPART (on-Surface Positioning for Augmented RealiTy) allows augmenting any flat surface (images etc.) with tablets or smartphones, addressing both affordability and mobility. "A ubiquitous English vocabulary learning system: evidence of active/passive attitudes vs. usefulness/ease-of-use" introduces and develops "Ubiquitous English Vocabulary Learning" (UEFL) system. It introduces to the memorization using the video clips. According to their paper the video clip gives a better chance for students to memorize vocabulary. There are few positive aspects on the paper. Firstly, how they brought entertainment with the learning was interesting. Secondly, the use of "Near-Synonyms and Similar-Looking (NSSL)" technology to help students memorizing was thoughtful and refreshing. However, the UEFL system could have been developed more efficiently and effectively, if it was approached differently. The developer/authors could have used the image instead of the video clip, and adding drawing pad for students to draw the image. Drawing the image is the blend of the visual memorization and the Bloom's taxonomy. Evaluation and creating are at the top of the learning process according to Bloom's taxonomy. By drawing the image, the evaluation and creating occurs which helps student to memorize vocabulary not only in the short-term memory system but also in the long-term memory system. The biggest potential that can be found in this program is how students can learn without realizing. Students can start the program because of the entertainment but the education occurs without students realizing their education. Therefore, the passive students can be also attracted to the education and turn into a active learner without knowing. [For the full proceedings, see ED562107.]

These proceedings contain the papers of the 14th International Conference on Cognition and Exploratory Learning in the Digital Age (CELDA 2017), 18-20 October 2017, which has been organized by the International Association for Development of the Information Society (IADIS) and endorsed by the Japanese Society for Information and Systems in Education (JSISE). The CELDA 2017 Conference received 72 submissions from more than 25 countries. This paper introduces web viewers for educational VR contents. Recently, many types of VR goggles have been released as commercial products and many entertainment applications for them have been created. However, educational VR contents have been created so far are not so many because the creation of VR contents is time consuming task. We need to create many educational VR contents to enhance educational efficiency using VR technology. On the other hand, many types of scanning devices have been researched and developed, e.g., Lidar cameras, 360VR cameras and so on. Using these scanning devices, we can obtain 3D data like Point Cloud Data (PCD), 3D model data, 360VR images/videos. To use these 3D data as educational VR contents, we need viewer applications for them. In this paper, the authors propose such viewer applications as web services. The proposed web viewers also have functionality to upload 3D data from users' web-browser to the web-server on that the web viewers are stored. Therefore, it becomes possible for users like teachers to provide other users like students with educational VR contents as web contents. This paper discusses the "Just Keep Solving" apps that are designed based on deliberate practice model for developing mathematical skills. Features of deliberate practice include well-defined goals involving areas of weakness as determined by a knowledgeable other such as a teacher. The integration of game design features provides a positive environment wherein the learning goals critical in a deliberate practice model are emphasized. Possible strategies for integrating the apps in a classroom are also discussed using Hughes, Thomas and Scharber's RAT (Replacement, Amplification, Transformation) framework. The games can replace traditional pen-and-paper classroom activities, amplify learning by personalizing a student's experience and providing opportunities for deliberate practice, and transform instruction from being teacher-centered to student-centered. Multicultural classes in academia present challenges, intensified further in the context of online learning. Addressing these disparities requires innovative solutions to the challenges stemming from the diverse cultural backgrounds, religious affiliations, age disparities, varying learning skills, and differences in technology access. This study employs Design-Based Research (DBR) methodology to tackle these challenges. Through iterative processes involving expert collaboration, several Design Patterns (DPs) were identified and refined. All design patterns revolve around digital and visual literacy. The study's findings indicate that implementing various Design Patterns in a multicultural class using mobile learning and a shared visual language can be highly effective. These Design Patterns foster a common vocabulary, and cultivate essential learning skills to bridge existing gaps, they facilitate recognition of the learning space and interactions between the students. This paper presents four design patterns that serve as the didactic foundation for designing visual academic learning using smartphones: 'The Power of Selfies' -- Leveraging selfies for active learning; 'Album Anchored Theory' -- Utilizing personal picture repositories to grasp abstract theoretical models ; 'Between Image and Word' -- Utilizing metaphors to enhance vocabulary; 'Research in a "Physital" Environment' -- Collaborative learning without textual overload in an intriguing virtual setting. The study investigates the pilot verification of the role of AI-powered tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini in enhancing reading comprehension and critical thinking skills among students in history and literature courses focused on Anglophone cultures. These tools provide personalized explanations and foster diverse text analysis, increasing awareness of gender biases and inequalities in canonical works. The research, based on workshops employing the design thinking principles (Plattner -- Meinel -- Leiffel, 2011), aims to engage Generation Z students, also known as the Homeland Generation (Carter, 2018). Zeers are often considered a "non-reading" generation as they address their digital preferences. Design thinking principles are employed to facilitate students' active participation in content creation. The workshops emphasize the dual roles of AI tools and educators, with teachers guiding students to navigate potential AI biases while promoting independent critical thinking skills. The methodology includes AI-assisted reading exercises, literary analysis, and searching for historical facts, encouraging students to engage with gender and transgender themes. The authors highlight the neurological risks of passive AI tool use, referencing Stranský (2023), stressing the importance of maintaining cognitive engagement. Preliminary findings indicate improved vocabulary and writing style among a third of participants, though grammar improvement remains limited. Therefore, it is crucial to form Zeers and raise Alphas and upcoming Betas to prevent generational degeneration. As these generations are digital natives, avoiding technology is impractical. Consequently, teachers must guide them on how to use AI tools wisely and integrate them effectively into the educational process. Careful integration of AI-assisted activities alongside traditional instructional methods can empower students to engage more deeply with course materials and recognize gender as a crucial lens for interpreting literary and historical narratives. This study presents an innovative approach to promoting the international attractiveness of the University of Turin (UniTo) through synergy with the University of the West Timi?oara in the "UNITorientA" project. In particular, the focus is developing a gamified virtual tour to offer students an interactive immersion in university spaces. Mobile technology plays a central role, enabling students to explore university environments and access multimedia content via personal devices. In this context, mobile learning emerges as a critical element in enhancing the learning experience by expanding access to information and promoting student mobility. The present study, conducted in collaboration between UniTo's Department of Philosophy and Educational Sciences and the University of the West of Timi?oara, aims to explore how the convergence of mobile technology and virtual tours can significantly contribute to the knowledge and experience acquisition process of university students, highlighting the transformative potential of technology. To drive effective change towards sustainable development, several courses of action have been devised, and education was pointed as a way to attain this goal. Recognizing the impact of learning in context, it is essential to develop innovative educational proposals that bring schools into other social contexts. This study aims to present, albeit preliminarily, the potential of the EduCITY smart learning city environment for Education for Sustainable Development. The research explores mixed methods to analyse students' perceptions of one component of the smart learning city environment, the EduCITY app, which supports mobile educational games, and its potential to promote learning about sustainable development. To this end, an analysis of data collected during five educational game activities supported by this app was conducted. Data was collected anonymously through a post-game questionnaire, and through automatic app logs of game performance. Participating students recognised the value of the EduCITY app in promoting education for sustainable development. There was also a positive trend in promoting learning about sustainability through the scores and number of correct and incorrect answers per game. This article presents indicators of the value of the EduCITY project in promoting sustainable smart learning city environments, specifically through the use of the EduCITYapp and its multimedia resources. Future work includes the co-creation of games with students, teachers and citizens towards education for sustainability to gather data to assess whether the EduCITY smart learning city environment can promote changes in citizens to empower them towards sustainable development. Artificial intelligence (AI) technology is already challenging a variety of societal areas, including education. It is transforming education to data driven. AI-enhanced technologies in education (abbreviated AIinED) will have a significant role in changing the teaching and learning methods, as well as impacting the behavior and organization of the educational system. It is considered that the AIinED will change the paradigm of education in the future. And yet, AIinED is still more in the lab than being practically implemented in education and training. We consider three major players in the implementation of AIinED -- students, teachers, and society. All three can benefit from AIinED and at the same time be a potential target of the risks that AIinED brings along with its promises -- may be one of the reasons why main stakeholders (UNESCO, EC etc.) have been developing guidelines and recommendations for ethical use of AIinED. The literature shows that the center of AIinED system will be the student, but we consider the student not only as a target but also as a source of ideas for AIinED development with the potential to accelerate the process of adoption of AIinED. Hence, one of the big questions should be how the students foresee the role of artificial intelligence in education. To initiate such a question, though, it is important to know the level of understanding among the students about what and where artificial intelligence is. There are three major aspects that AIinED must be considered accordingly -- technological, lawful, and ethical. This paper presents the results of a study on high school students' understanding of AI technologies and their attitudes to their application in education. A survey was used as a tool to elaborate. The conceptual model of the research was developed on the basis of established theories linking attitudes to behavior and the acceptance of artificial intelligence technologies in education. Each element of this concept is explored with a different part of the questionnaire, which contains a total of 12 questions (some of which with sub-questions). The survey was elaborated online within October-November 2021. A link to the questionnaire in Bulgarian was provided to 178 high and vocational high schools educating students aged 14-19 (grades 8-12) across the country (Bulgaria). 766 students submitted their replies through the online survey form. Descriptive statistics and analysis of the frequencies of the respondents' opinions were made based on the data. The results show that the students participating in the survey:(a) understand the essence of AI technologies; (b) they are convinced of the usefulness of the application of artificial intelligence technologies in their daily activities and strongly believe that it improves it; (c) are not entirely clear about the benefits of artificial intelligence enhanced technologies in learning and teaching; (d) do not demonstrate sufficient knowledge and understanding of the necessity of ethical use of AI technologies in education; The latter reduces the positive influence of the perceived usefulness of artificial intelligence technologies in the learning process on students' attitudes. Due the wideness of the term Physical Computing, there is a need for a better structure of this topic. This paper is about an approach of structuring this field by finding attributes of different physical computing devices which can be used in class. Those attributes are meant to enforce teachers as well as researchers to analyze different devices from a pedagogical perspective in order to use those devices in class and use their full educational potential. Applying computing technology during problem solving and the reflection of the appropriateness of this application are crucial skills for modern life. This is especially true while working on interdisciplinary STEM problems. However, up to now, few ready-to-use materials are available to foster such competencies. This paper starts bridging this gap by presenting a workbook for students in higher secondary education (around age 15). The workbook focuses on a complex STEM problem, primarily rooted in mathematics, computing, and technology education: Estimating the time it takes to evacuate a building. In the workbook, students work through five exercises focused on the problem of trying to make a sports hall safer. For three potential changes to the building, they should evaluate whether it increases the safety of the sports hall and whether the measure can reasonably be evaluated with a given simulation. During their work, students become aware of arguments useful for such an critical evaluation. For example, a change can only be evaluated if its magnitude is greater than variation in the (randomized) fleeing algorithm of the software. After development of the workbook, we used a design-based research approach to improve its quality. To do so, we asked eight educators for feedback and piloted it with 20 students from two mathematics classes of different capabilities. The results show that students had fun while working on the exercises and both the students and their tutors evaluated the workbook to be educationally relevant. Several issues, most importantly regarding the wording of several exercises, were identified and improved. Multiple exercises were further sub-divided to better suit learners of the age targeted. Due to the advances of artificial intelligence (AI) and natural language processing, new AI-powered writing tools have emerged. They can be used by students among other things for text translation, to improve spelling or to generate new texts. In academic writing, AI-powered writing tools are posing challenges but also opportunities for teaching and learning. It is an open question in which way to sensibly deal with these tools. To address the issue, this paper investigates, what interests different stakeholders (students, lecturers, university administration) pursue in relation to AI-powered writing tools. Building on this, tensions between different stakeholders are identified and (teaching) strategies proposed to deal with these tensions. To discuss the findings in light of recent developments around ChatGPT, semi-structured expert interviews were conducted in April 2023 with five academic writing lecturers at the University of St. Gallen. The results suggest that as writing tools become more and more powerful, the need for strategies to ensure their reasonable and transparent use also increases. The outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic affects educational system around the world. Online learning is no longer an option, but a compulsory during this pandemic. This paper is to identify how far synchronous online learning in English as foreign language learning at higher education implemented. This study focuses on the use of Zoom meeting platform as technological devices that supports synchronous online learning as well as identifying the students' perception and challenges faced by both lecturers and students in Indonesia. This study applies systemic literature review (SLR) approach by collecting research articles from Google Scholar indexed database. There are twenty-seven articles published in 2020-2022 that meet the criteria which are reviewed. This paper results the voices from students related to the advantages and disadvantages during using using Zoom Meeting platform in EFL classroom as well as the challenges faced by both lecturers and students. The result of this paper can provide insight toward the use of Zoom Meeting platform as technological devices that can be adopted as synchronous teaching tool during social distancing. However, the Zoom user should consider the availability of stable internet connection and teachers' and students' readiness.

The paper analyses the grades assigned by the professors of the University of Milan to their students at the end of written exams, comparing what happened in academic year 2018-19 and in academic year 2020-21, i.e., before and during the crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. In March 2020, the lockdown closed the classrooms, stopping face-to-face interactions among professors and students: it became then necessary to identify possible scenarios for carrying on written exams online, suitably monitoring student behaviors, and to propose them to the University professors. Main purpose of the analysis reported in this paper is a preliminary evaluation of the effectiveness of these scenarios, through comparison of the grades the professors assigned to their students. These proceedings contain the papers of the IADIS International Conference on Cognition and Exploratory Learning in the Digital Age (CELDA 2013), October 22-24, 2013, which has been organized by the International Association for Development of the Information Society (IADIS), co-organized by The University of North Texas (UNT), sponsored by the Association for Educational Communication and Technologies (AECT), and endorsed by the Japanese Society for Information and Systems in Education (JSISE). The CELDA 2013 conference aims to address the main issues concerned with evolving learning processes and supporting pedagogies and applications in the digital age. There have been advances in both cognitive psychology and computing that have affected the educational arena. The convergence of these two disciplines is increasing at a fast pace and affecting academia and professional practice in many ways. Paradigms such as just-in-time learning, constructivism, student-centered learning, and collaborative approaches have emerged and are being supported by technological advancements such as simulations, virtual reality, and multi-agents systems. Recommender Systems (RS) in e-learning has attracted several researchers aiming basically at scaffolding learners in locating relevant learning resources that meet their learning needs and profiles. Whereas a number of review studies have been carried out in the area of educational recommender systems, there is a limited information in the literature review in the specific domain of recommendation systems for teachers. The objective of this work is to summarize the current research efforts in the field of teacher-oriented recommender systems. By performing this systematic review, 32 papers were selected for further analysis. The obtained results show that educational portals and repositories are widely used as learning environments where recommendations occur. The finding of this review further show that personalized recommendations for teachers and teaching practices improvements are the main issues addressed by RS for teachers. Furthermore, the hybrid approach for recommendation and the evaluation by experiment are the most used, occurring in 43,75% of the selected reviewed papers. We are availing the key findings of this work to propose a teacher recommender system that provides teachers with the most relevant open educational resources (OER) retrieved from collections of resources aligned to the UNESCO ICT Competency Framework for Teachers (CFT). This paper describes a preliminary study of how computational methods allow us to know more about citizen science and its connection with education. Citizen science is a practice involving a general public in scientific tasks and generating knowledge and scientific results. Previous studies have shown that the education sector can take benefit of the knowledge and activities organized or resources generated in CS projects. In this paper, we analyze three citizen science platforms (Eu.Citizen science platform, Observatorio de la ciencia ciudadana and Oficina de la ciència ciutadana) with computational analytics techniques to provide initial insights of how educators can take benefit of the analysis of large amounts of data from CS. Finally, different visualizations and dashboards have been developed as illustrative examples of tools to support educators and learners. These tools provide information about citizen science projects, an overview of scientific vocabulary, access to validated resources and examples of technology used in scientific inquiry that can be used with educational purposes. Digital resources offer a vast assortment of educational opportunities for students in higher education. From 2018 to 2022, a digital study assistant (DSA), named SIDDATA, was developed at three German universities and consequently field-tested. One of the DSA's features is an AI-driven natural language interface for educational resource recommendation. This paper performs an analysis of the effectiveness of recommendations, by analyzing data generated over the course of two years of DSA usage. We find that although initial user interest is high, only a small percentage of users engage with the recommendation feature. Furthermore, we find that quality of recommendations was perceived as mixed to negative.

Flipped Learning is an active teaching methodology that consists of reversing learning times and spaces. It entails that the teacher prepares and provides in advance the content to be studied so that, during the lecture, there is more time to do exercises and practice the concepts learned during self-study. In this process, the feedback that the teacher provides to students on their level of understanding, as well as the learning outcomes and observations that students, in turn, provide to the teacher, play a key role to adapt the learning path to the learners' actual needs. The paper aims to present a first case study of the application of Flipped Learning in the corporate setting. The case study involved a small company that is one of the partners in the national project L.I.F.T. to measure the effectiveness of the approach and learner satisfaction.

Making education available to everyone is about opening new doors to the future world where people are living with their full abilities and potentials. This vision was acknowledged by UNESCO and it was one of the main motives for introducing Open Educational Resources (OER) in 2002. Over the last two decades, OER have made a positive impact on spreading quality educational information. However, the lack of experience in using and practicing OER is one of the common reasons why people have difficulties utilizing OER without violating copyright laws. To overcome this problem, a workshop concept was designed in order to qualify educators for OER. As part of the workshops, a digital educational game has been developed to elevate the participants' motivation and engagement. The game covers all basic aspects of the OER cycle (creating, editing, using, and distributing OER) and is designed to be played within the practical sessions. By implementing this game and utilizing the concept of Game-based Learning (GBL), we wanted to provide an interactive learning environment to practice OER and motivate learners to explore the OER world. In this paper, we present the concept of the game and demonstrate its technical foundation as well as its functionalities.

The challenges in learning and teaching computer programming relate to everyone who needs to prepare others for the digital world. Learning and teaching computer programming is a challenge because it requires persistence and dedication. Nowadays, Computational Thinking is understood as an essential skill to overcome those challenges. In this paper, we propose an Augmented Reality (AR) environment that creates representations of complex programming constructs displaying engaging and playful activities that can be promptly done and do not require a heavy mental load. Such exercises are intended to be used as Learning Resources to train people in CT. The artifact enables people to explore CT concepts and several problem-solving approaches subtly. The artifact includes a simple AR-based activity, which is easy to handle and visualize based on "see-through video." We argue that users can develop CT problem-solving skills by interacting with this artifact. These learning activities supported by AR provide visual representations and interactivity to engage students while training CT. We also describe an experiment to test this artifact. The experiment was performed with 59 participants of the same age and educational level. The results of the feedback collected were positive. [For the full proceedings, see ED638044.]

The potential of using virtual reality in the school context is assessed heterogeneously from a scientific point of view. Especially the embedding in existing didactic approaches, the concrete design of the support system as well as the competence of the teachers are relevant. But it is undisputed that virtual reality opens up new possibilities to visit different out-of-school learning locations. However, it is not yet clear whether these opportunities have a significant impact on learning success. In this paper, three research questions about the learning effect and the essential criteria for the use of virtual reality are investigated in a qualitative field experiment with a virtual reality learning unit about our solar system. The field experiment follows a classical A/B testing approach with pre- and post-tests. The results show that virtual reality can contribute to students' knowledge transfer. However, this contribution does not show a higher learning success compared to a classical didactic approach. Another result shows that combining virtual reality learning applications with a traditional teaching approach can be very successful. However, as long as virtual reality is a new experience for most students, the use of VR goggles leads to cognitive overload. [For the full proceedings, see ED638044.]

Mobile technology is a promising area of research post COVID-19 and helps the realisation of education 4.0 The purpose of this paper is to conceptualise mobile learning in Education 4.0 paradigm in the South African context. This descriptive study used a questionnaire made in a google form and distributed amongst pre-service teachers at a faculty of education. The survey questionnaire explored perspectives, ownership and use of mobile technologies by pre-service teachers. The data was analysed using the frequencies of the answers to the questionnaire. The findings establish the need for all stakeholders to holistically invest in the technical and capacity building of mobile technologies for learning purposes and help realise and develop the education sector to partake of the Education 4.0 opportunities. The study recommends the need for further studies that will explore additional knowledge on effective mobile technologies that make learning mobile aligning with the fourth industrial revolution innovations. Due to the advance of technologies and the increase of their use around the world, it shows a need to include them in education, as tools that could help the current teaching methods. Taking into account that most English classes in Brazilian public schools have been happening in the same way for many years, and considering the importance of learning a foreign language in this new technological world scenario, the objective of this study, that is part of a Master Degree dissertation, is to understand the perception of Brazilian English teachers in relation to the use of games and digital technologies, in the practice of face to face and remote language teaching classes, in different educational environments. Based on the participation of English teachers in the research stages, it is possible to explore their experiences and points of view, directly related to the English teaching and the use of technologies and digital games. This research collected information through a focus group research method. In this way, it was possible to verify that teachers, together with technologies and digital games, are very important in the classroom and those are extremely important tools to be used in teaching, including English. It was also noticed that keeping learning and qualifications are very important for the updating and practice of teaching. In addition, it was possible to conclude that, through the planning of activities, visualizing the right moment to insert digital games and technologies in their classes, teachers have support tools in these, which will help to engage and motivate students in learning a new language. The Edu-social Algorithm research project aims to construct a micro-pedagogical, experimental, digital research action to create a methodological model using the functions and algorithms found in social media used by Generation Alpha (specifically Instagram). The project is the manifestation of an explorative research path seeking to alter the algorithms that form the basis of all the major platforms in current cyberspace, and in "Big Tech". This alteration is possible through the development of a community of virtual practice, consisting of students and faculty working within Instagram through an interactive approach, to take pedagogical advantage of their mobile phones and apps. The qualitative results show a series of media-educational content evidencing the pedagogical potential of the social media platform Instagram, and the possibility of reproducing the developed methodological model. The relationships between digital education, social media, and active learning are the prevalent components of this work. Along with these main aspects, this research will also treat the relationship between educational reciprocity and the ownership of knowledge, though the goal of the research action is not only to create a digital methodological model, but a community of virtual practices founded on the approach derived by the didactic strategies intrinsic to the Edu-social Algorithm. The practical aspect of this research involves a target group of classes in the final year of middle schools, reaching a total of 98 students and 57 teaching faculty, participating in the Edu-social Algorithm across seven classrooms in three different schools in Palermo (Italy). The students in the experimental classrooms showed, compared with the control classrooms which followed a traditional model, the possibility of learning through social media and improving one's own scholastic performance, intentionally leaving smartphones on in the classroom, when used in conjunction with educational strategies designed for healthy smartphone use in teaching and learning. Educational Robotics is increasingly used in elementary-school classrooms to develop students' algorithmic thinking and programming skills. However, most research appears descriptive and lacks experimental evidence on the effects of teaching interventions using robotics to develop algorithmic thinking. Using the robots Dash and Dot, this study examined algorithmic thinking development in groups of children aged 6, 9, and 12. The results showed a statistically significant main effect between the age of students and algorithmic thinking skills and a statistically significant main effect between intervention and algorithmic thinking. In conclusion, the findings underscore the necessity of providing learners with structured, scaffolded activities tailored to their age to effectively nurture algorithmic thinking skills when engaging in Dash and Dot activities. Visualizations have become more complex in recent years so that users need to learn how to use these systems. Onboarding systems can help users to learn how to interact with a visualization efficiently. Simple tutorials are often not sufficient. There are still open questions on how to design such onboarding systems. So far, a few usability studies have been conducted to clarify this issue. We decided to adopt an approach using sketching. We conducted a study with 29 participants. Possible users of onboarding systems were asked to develop prototypes of an onboarding system based on sketches. The process of developing these prototypes and the results were analyzed in a qualitative study. We can show that onboarding systems should follow a step-by-step approach and be integrated into the visualization. In addition, it seems that questions, tasks, and examples should be part of an onboarding system, so that users can try out how to use the system on their own. Mobile devices are being intensively used by the Portuguese youth in their daily life, but not in school activities. Despite this gap, research shows that technology can promote student learning in non-high education contexts. This paper comprises a survey study where mobile learning is analyzed through the eyes of 244 students attending the 2nd or 3rd Cycles of Basic Education (CBE). The acknowledged advantages and difficulties of the use of mobile devices for learning, as well as the educational value and usability of a specific mobile learning strategy, using the EduPARK app and game, were analyzed. Results revealed that most students owned a mobile device and were able to use them to learn. They had a positive perspective regarding mobile learning and valued the advantages of being easy to find up-to-date information, motivating for learning and easy to carry along. Nevertheless, students acknowledged difficulties in the use of mobile devices to learn, such as requiring an internet connection, its slowness, not being allowed to use mobile devices in schools as they facilitate access to distractions. The EduPARK game achieved an average Educational Value Scale of 83.8 and an average System Usability Scale of 80.2, indicating its high educational value and usability for students. This paper presents empirical evidence regarding the effectiveness of the integration of mobile game-based AR approaches in 2nd and 3rd CBE to promote students learning. It also includes an example of excellent interdisciplinary educational materials that comprises a very useful tool for teachers and students to explore scientific knowledge by accessing appealing information on biological and historical references of a local urban park. The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in school closures all across the world, and lots of students have shifted from conventional classrooms to online learning. With the help of ICT technologies nowadays, learning online can be more effective in a number of ways. However, most of the online learning environments without instructors' attention may result in different learning patterns compared to the traditional face-to-face classroom. In this paper, we aimed at detecting the slide reading behaviors of the students by analyzing operational event logs from a digital textbook reader for a lecture offered in our university. We compared reading patterns between traditional face-to-face lectures and hybrid online lectures, our results show that online lectures lead to more off-task behaviors. Our analysis provides a rich understanding of e-book reading and informs design implications for online learning during the pandemic. Virtual reality recently expanded to collaborative and social networking environments where users interact with virtual characters (VCs) of various appearances and behaviors, often impacting the quality of experience. In this paper, we present preliminary survey results of perceptions about characteristics of VCs and a user study of a VR lecture app with different styles of virtual instructors. VCs were collected from existing collaborative and social VR applications and categorized by body types and design style. Survey results coupled with prior works guided the development of design styles, which we briefly present. In the user study, 12 users experienced two different VR lectures with randomly assigned character styles. Results show participants found the stylized VC familiar and human while the realistic VC was engaging and trustworthy. The present research paper has been focused on one of the most critical issues in the field of education in the most recent times which is the impact of educational technology on students' performance. Our paper aim to identify if there is a significant difference between respondents' attitudes towards the impact of educational technology in Ahlia University on students' performance attributed to gender (boys' schools & Girls' schools). Exploiting technology in the education sector is not a recent issue. The real start for integrating technology in education is actually known to be two decades ago when the internet started to be part and parcel of people's lives. Government of countries that have a vision and plans to develop their economies recognized that improving education and integrating the latest technologies is a key means for achieving their strategic plans and economic visions. education development was given due attention. The sample was selected randomly with the electronic sample calculator showing that the minimum number is 380 individuals. The questionnaire was circulated electronically via school administration in the four governorates. The received responses were 342 indicating that the return rate is 90%. Finally, it was concluded that there is a significant difference for gender (boys' schools & Girls' schools) was on the respondents' attitudes towards the impact of educational technology in Ahlia University on students' performance. The implications of the findings of the research showed that the findings of the study can be used as a basis for future research about the relationship e-learning and effective educational outcomes. E-exams used in higher education can accommodate a range of assignment types that have traditionally been conducted with pen-and-paper. However, one issue that remains a challenge is proper support of sketching in larger, generic e-exams systems. Different types of sketching assignment demand input devices suited to the specific type of problem-solving. Adopting an e-exam system may involve compromises in terms of restricted opportunities to use sketching assignments as part of the e-exam that affect the students' performance or their experience of the e-exam. This paper presents a comparison of 77 students' performance and preferences with three different input devices (a mouse, a graphical tablet, and a touchpad) when solving sketching assignments from three different computer science courses. The study focused on capturing the students' perspective, and the findings include identified benefits and challenges associated with using the three different input devices during sketching. The purpose of this paper is to report on how the concepts of autonomy and ideology are perceived by scholars, educators and researchers. The project is a preliminarily study to investigate the connections between the language and computer literacies, that would lead to further influences the implications on the development of traditional language learning. The study will be covering 180 secondary students in two private schools (one is only girls, referred to as G school and the other is co-educational, referred to as BG school). This paper will mainly focus on comparing the students' performance and use of the electronic medium at school and at home. The G school students do not bring nor use any of the electronic medium at school, except when the library computers are booked by their teachers for research. They handwrite their notes and assignments in their workbooks. Their education is focused on mastering the autonomous dimensions of a given literacy, the ideological dimensions can present much more compelling and in depth challenges. The literature reviews differentiate between language literacy and computer literacy acquisitions, the two literacies require different skills from each other. Even though, the BG students are using their electronic devices at school as well as in their domestic environment for homework. They are using the devices more than seven to nine hours a day. They access their textbooks as eBooks on their devices and they compose their notes and school work electronically. However, the G students are also practising on their personal computers and are familiar in operating the software and hardware as much as the BG students who spend a substantial amount of time each day on their electronic devices. The present paper focuses on the approach, which corresponds to the virtual learning in the artificial environment, and should be considered as situational and action-based, because the features of its application are determined each time by the specific conditions of training and the virtual educational situation that exists only in this area, at this time, between specific subjects and objects of education. This case study will outline the e-learning journey at a prominent university in Jamaica for the period 2013-2017. The post-diploma bachelor of pharmacy was changed from face to face to fully online delivery due to dwindling enrollment. This paper outlines the challenges to curriculum implementation faced as well as delivery and assessment issues. This paper provides a detailed description of how a smart spaces laboratory has been used for assessing learners' performance in various educational contexts. The paper shares the authors' experiences from using sensor-generated data in a number of learning scenarios. In particular the paper describes how a smart learning environment is created with the use of a range of sensors measuring key data from individual learners including (i) heartbeat, (ii) emotion detection, (iii) sweat levels, (iv) voice fluctuations and (v) duration and pattern of contribution via voice recognition. The paper also explains how biometrics are used to assess learner' contribution in certain activities but also to evaluate collaborative learning in student groups. Finally the paper instigates research in the role of using visualization of biometrics as a medium for supporting assessment, facilitating learning processes and enhancing learning experiences. Examples of how learning analytics are created based on biometrics are also provided, resulting from a number of pilot studies that have taken place over the past couple of years.
