ChatGPT and Bard, two chatbots powered by Large Language Models (LLMs), are propelling the educational sector towards a new era of instructional innovation. Within this educational paradigm, the present investigation conducts a comparative analysis of these groundbreaking chatbots, scrutinizing their distinct operational characteristics and applications as depicted in current scholarly discourse. ChatGPT emerges as an exemplary tool in task-oriented textual interactions, while Bard brandishes unique features such as Text-To-Speech (TTS) functionality, which enhances accessibility and inclusive education, as well as integration with Google Workspace applications. This research critically examines their utilization in various spheres such as pedagogy, academic research, Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), mathematics, and software programming. Findings accentuate ChatGPT's superior efficacy in content drafting, code generation, language translation, and providing clinically precise responses, notwithstanding Bard's significant potential encapsulated in its exclusive features. Furthermore, the study traverses' crucial ethical aspects, including privacy concerns and inherent bias, underscoring the profound implications of these Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies on literature and advocating against the indiscriminate reliance on such models. This study investigated how motivational orientations and learning strategies predict ninth graders' non-routine mathematical problem-solving anxiety. Non-routine mathematical problem-solving anxiety classification and prediction were investigated through TwoStep cluster analysis, linear discriminant analysis, and logistic regression. 274 ninth graders participated in the study. The participants were clustered based on their problem-solving achievements and test anxiety levels: high-level and low-level problem-solving anxiety. Extrinsic goal orientation, rehearsal, and peer learning were significant classifiers. Intrinsic goal orientation, self-efficacy, rehearsal, and help-seeking were significant predictors for ninth graders' non-routine mathematical problem-solving anxiety.

This paper will cover the design of a learning environment as a classroom regarding the Quadratic Equations, Functions and Graphs. The goal of the learning environment offered in the paper is to design a classroom where students will enjoy the process, use their skills they already have during the learning process, control and plan their learning process, and have the right of free choice of which way they can learn easily. Besides, it is alleged that in the paper, students will be more engaged, motivated and self-confident in this learning environment in terms of theories and approaches. The problem of development of algorithmic competence of students -- future Computer Science teachers as a component of information competence is investigated. The aim of the study is to identify the conditions for effective algorithmization and programming learning, involving a modular representation of the content, blended learning, allocated in accordance with the B. Bloom's taxonomy classes of problems in Computer Science and Methods of its Teaching and the use of electronic learning resources. This paper specifies the concept of algorithmic competence of university students--students' readiness to design algorithms and programs, their use in professional activities in the process of Computer Science teaching, electronic learning resources (ELR) design, self-education in the field of Computer Science. Classes of problems for algorithmic competence development in accordance with B. Bloom's taxonomy (knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis and evaluation) are identified. Classes of problems correspond to ELR of a certain structure and content. The efficiency of ELR use in students' algorithmic competence development is statistically confirmed. The Computational Thinking recently has been recognised as one of the basic knowledge to be developed since childhood. Coding and computers are not just programming, but tools that help students to develop problem solving skills and more deep understand of the way things work. For these reasons, great attention has been focused on this topic both from a pedagogical and technological point of view. In this paper, a first approach to Computational Thinking using Arduino is presented. To this end, some learning activities have been designed to introduce middle school students, without any experience in coding, to the process of building the algorithm from simple exercises to more complex tasks. The pilot test involved 25 subjects, many of them do not like to study mathematics, science and technology, but the results were promising. The approach was appreciated by the students and the results of the questionnaires confirmed the learning effectiveness too. [For the complete proceedings, see ED600498.]

The significant amount of information available on the web has led to difficulties for the learner to find useful information and relevant resources to carry out their training. The recommender systems have achieved significant success in the area of e-commerce, they still have difficulties in formulating relevant recommendations on e-learning resources because of the different characteristics of learners. Most of the existing recommendation techniques do not take these characteristics into account. This problem can be mitigated by including learner information in the referral process. Currently many recommendation techniques have cold start problems and classification problems. In this paper, we propose an ontology-based collaborative filtering recommendation system for recommending learners' online learning resources based on a decision algorithm (DA). In our approach, ontology is used to model and represent domain knowledge about the learner and learning resources. Our approach is divided into four parts: (a) the creation of an ontology for the representation of the learner's knowledge and learning resources (b) the calculation of the similarity of the assessments according to the ontology and the prediction for the learner concerned; (c) generating the K best items by the collaborative filtering recommendation engine and (d) applying the DA on the proposed items to generate the final recommendations for the targeted learner. The study of the variational behavior of functions constitutes an important element in the understanding of the change of phenomena in real life. His understanding is an essential axis in the mathematical training of university students, especially those who pursue engineering careers. This article presents the results of a study whose objective was to determine the mistakes made by engineering students about the variational behavior of functions. The Duval Semiotics Records Theory was taken as a reference and a questionnaire was prepared with questions about identification of regions of variability for "x" and "y"; regions of growth, decrease, stability, extreme values and, analysis and description of the behavior of the function. The evaluation of the answers was done in a quantitative-qualitative way, from an exploratory and descriptive perspective, with 100 students participating in the civil engineering career. The results indicate that students do not make a real reflection on the variational behavior in intervals of the variables or in a global way. They have difficulty discriminating between the behavior of the function and the location of the function. They present cognitive difficulties that do not allow them to make an adequate conversion from one register to the other. Errors related to mathematical language were found, to the limitations to obtain spatial information, to establish erroneous inferences and to the inadequate development of previous knowledge, which does not allow them to properly evaluate the variational behavior of the functions. Science on a Sphere (SoS) is a compelling educational display installed at numerous museums and planetariums around the world; essentially the SoS display is a large spherical surface on which multicolor high-resolution depictions of (e.g.) planetary weather maps may be depicted. Fascinating as the SoS display is, however, it is in practice restricted to the use of museum professionals; students (and for that matter, older museum visitors) are unable to create their own displays for the surface. This paper describes a working software system, "Math on a Sphere" (MoS), that democratizes the SoS display by providing a simple programming interface to the public, over the World Wide Web. Briefly, our system allows anyone to write programs for spherical graphics patterns, and then to upload those programs at a planetarium or museum site and see the result on the giant sphere. This paper describes the implementation of the MoS system; sketches a sample project; and concludes with a more wide-ranging discussion of our user testing to date, as well as strategies for empowering children and students with greater control of public displays. These proceedings contain the papers of the 16th International Conference on Cognition and Exploratory Learning in the Digital Age (CELDA 2019), held during November 7-9, 2019, which has been organized by the International Association for Development of the Information Society (IADIS) and co-organised by University Degli Studi di Cagliari, Italy. The CELDA conference aims to address the main issues concerned with evolving learning processes and supporting pedagogies and applications in the digital age. There have been advances in both cognitive psychology and computing that have affected the educational arena. The convergence of these two disciplines is increasing at a fast pace and affecting academia and professional practice in many ways. Paradigms such as just-in-time learning, constructivism, student-centered learning and collaborative approaches have emerged and are being supported by technological advancements such as simulations, virtual reality and multi-agent systems. These developments have created both opportunities and areas of serious concerns. This conference aims to cover both technological as well as pedagogical issues related to these developments. Main tracks have been identified. However, innovative contributions that do not easily fit into these areas will also be considered as long as they are directly related to the overall theme of the conference -- cognition and exploratory learning in the digital age. The CELDA 2019 Conference received 87 submissions from more than 25 countries. Out of the papers submitted, 48 were accepted as full papers for an acceptance rate of 55%; 15 were accepted as short papers and one was accepted as a reflection paper. In addition to the presentation of full, short and reflection papers, the conference also includes one keynote presentation from an internationally distinguished researcher, Baltasar Fernández Manjón, Director of the e-Learning Research Group e-UCM, Complutense University of Madrid (UCM), Spain. Mobile learning is a cognitively demanding application and more frequently the ubiquitous nature of mobile computing means that mobile devices are used in cognitively demanding environments. This paper examines the nature of this use of mobile devices from a Learning, Usability and Cognitive Load Theory perspective. It suggests scenarios where these fields interact and presents an experiment which determined that several sources of cognitive load can be measured simultaneously by the learner. The experiment also looked at the interaction between these cognitive load types and found that a distraction did not affect the performance or cognitive load associated with a learning task but it did affect the perception of the cognitive load associated with using the application interface. This paper concludes by suggesting ways in which mobile learning (and mobile computing) can benefit by developing cognitive load aware systems that could detect and change the difficulty of the learning task based on the cognitive state of the learner. We have explored educational methods for algorithmic thinking for novices and implemented a block programming editor and a simple learning management system. In this paper, we propose a program/algorithm complexity metric specified for novice learners. This metric is based on the variable usage in arithmetic and relational formulas in learner's algorithms. To evaluate the applicability of this metric for novice education, we discuss the differences between three previous program complexity metrics and our proposed metric. Learning Style (LS) is an important parameter in the learning process. Therefore, learning styles should be considered in the design, development, and implementation of e-learning environments. Consequently, an important capability of an e-learning system could be the automatic determination of a student's learning style. In this paper, a set of features which are important in extracting the learning style automatically from students' behavior has been determined. These features, which are recognized based on Myers-Briggs Type Indicator's (MBTI), play a key role in predicting learning styles in an online course. The features are determined and ranked using pattern recognition techniques, such as K-means clustering algorithm, to show which features can be better to separate learning style dimensions. This paper reports design and implementation outcomes at middle development advance of an educative program based on use and construction of widgets on Wolfram Alpha platform at higher education level for engineering and sciences areas. Widgets were based on Physics and Mathematics curricula under Project Oriented Learning and Blended Learning methodologies. Widgets constructed by teachers are first used by students to appropriate basic concepts of each course on a mobile learning basis; after, students construct their own widgets applying that concepts but involving different applied situations based on curriculum integration. Two phases of this activity help to develop basic and high level thinking. Description of design combining Wolfram Alpha widget developer, Weebly and Jotform tools to set up the widgets, institutional current advances on teachers training, courses involved and current outcomes of project are presented. The purpose of this paper is to determine whether the changes that were found to occur pre- to post intervention in students' cognitive structures (Mills, 2013; Knezek, Christensen, Tyler-Wood, & Periathiruvadi, 2013) continued to persist two years later. Major findings were: a) semantic perception of science and STEM as a career became more aligned with interest in being a scientist, from pretest to post test time during the treatment year and continued to be aligned two years later; b) semantic perception of engineering moved from alignment with science and STEM as a career at time 1, to alignment with semantic perception of technology and creative tendencies after the treatment year, at time 2, and remained aligned with technology two years later, at time 3; and c) semantic perception of mathematics was separated from the other constructs during the pre-post treatment year and remained largely separated two years later. In the last decades there have been several attempts to use computers in Music Education. New pedagogical trends encourage incorporating technology tools in the process of learning music. Between them, those systems based on Artificial Intelligence are the most promising ones, as they can derive new information from the inputs and visualize them in several meaningful ways. This paper presents an application of machine learning to music performance which is able to discover the similarities and differences between a given performance and those from other musicians. Such a system would help students to better learn how to perform a certain piece of music, allowing them to compare with other students or master performers. This work presents a proposed model in blended learning for a numerical methods course evolved from traditional teaching into a research lab in scientific visualization. The blended learning approach sets a differentiated and flexible scheme based on a mobile setup and face to face sessions centered on a net of research challenges. In this article, we suggest that the history in Mathematics Education combined with mobile technology, can provide analysis of concepts, theories and significant logical structures in the process of teaching and learning of Mathematics, as the main objective of this study is to analyze the students' motivation and learning using tablets in the classroom. From a collaborative work, high school students have created applications that told a little the Mathematics' history. A private school situated in the east side of São Paulo city conducted this experiment. With the participation of 4 teachers and 107 students of the first year of the high school, we observed that the tablet generated a stimulating and challenging environment in search of mathematical historical elements to explain concepts and theories so far not questioned by students in conventional classes. The results presented in the study indicate that the use of tablets in the work development was of paramount importance not only in the motivational issue, but also in getting knowledge about some mathematical theories put in its history. Lots of researches have showed that plagiarism becomes a severe problem in higher education around the world, especially in programming learning for its essence. Therefore, an effective strategy for plagiarism surveillance in program learning is much essential. Some literature focus on code similarity algorithm and the related tools can help to deal with the tedious and time-consuming task of detecting plagiarism to some extent. However, it is somewhat cursory to determine plagiarized programs only with automatic tool. Meanwhile, there is little research on incentive strategy of plagiarism surveillance. In this paper, we focus on the incentive mechanism of programming plagiarism surveillance. We aim to use some incentive strategy for plagiarism to gain the students' learning outcome. In the context of a programming learning information system EduPCR, a fishbone model is proposed, which consists of three aspects: problem, reason, and strategy. The questionnaire and interview conducted to survey the students' attitude about the incentive model show that the incentive model is welcome and practical in programming plagiarism surveillance. Our research is not only valuable for the programming learning but also for plagiarism surveillance of documents in other formats in academia. [For the complete proceedings, see ED557168.]

This paper examines literature on the development of self-knowledge for possible selves--how an individual thinks about oneself and one's potential future selves (Markus & Nurius, 1986). Future science selves research, a recent offshoot of possible selves theories, centers on the development and loss of future possible scientific selves and factors such as academics, apprenticeships, or serious science gaming that may influence the science self and science career interest. Science career persistence is thought to be related to scientific exposure, reflection in real-world contexts, mentoring programs, and intensive math and science academic programs. While serious science gaming may prove to encourage science selves by providing positive virtual science-related experiences, there is limited research on best learning contexts or long-range effects of academic science gaming on adolescents. The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of Quick Response (QR) codes and mobile devices in the context of Finnish basic education. The feasibility was analyzed through a mobile learning framework, which includes the core characteristics of mobile learning. The study is part of a larger research where the aim is to develop a theoretical framework for mobile learning and mobile learning practices. QR codes were chosen in particular because teachers were interested in seeing how this relatively easy and versatile technology could be utilized in their classrooms. QR code implementations blended in and enriched the traditional teaching methods and classroom learning in a motivating and meaningful way. The core characteristics of mobile leaning were realized comparatively well. However, the study also indicated that the factors that should be added to the framework are the school curriculum, ICT integration strategies, teacher competencies, and technological, social and cultural change.
