The paper analyzes numerically the passages to the limit in the dynamic problem for a penny-shaped crack at the interface between dissimilar linear elastic, homogeneous, isotropic materials as either the frequency of harmonic load or the difference between the properties of the materials decreases. It is shown that as the frequency decreases, the solution of the dynamic problem tends to that of the static problem, and as the physical and mechanical properties of the materials become less different, the original problem goes into the dynamic problem for a crack in a homogeneous body [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper is concerned with dynamic problems in fracture mechanics for elastic solids having cracks with contacting faces. The contact problem for a penny-shaped crack with a nonzero initial opening under normally incident harmonic wave is solved by the method of boundary integral equations. Three-dimensional problems in the dynamic fracture mechanics of materials with interface cracks are considered as nonclassical problems of fracture mechanics. Physically correct results in fracture mechanics in the case where the interaction of the crack edges must be taken into account are analyzed. The linear (classical) and nonlinear (nonclassical) problems of dynamic fracture mechanics for materials with interface cracks are formulated using the above approaches. A method for solving three-dimensional linear dynamic problems based on boundary integral equations for piecewise-homogeneous materials and the boundary-element method is outlined. This method can be used for incremental solution of nonlinear problems. The method involves the regularization of hypersingular integrals. New classes of three-dimensional linear dynamic problems for circular and elliptic interface cracks are solved. Numerical values of stress intensity factors obtained with the linear problem formulation are the first step toward calculating them in the nonlinear formulation. The boundary-element method (BEM) applied to three-dimensional problems in the linear theory of elasticity is analyzed. The solutions of test problems for spherical and cubic cavities are used as examples to consider the basic aspects and difficulties of applying the traditional BEM to static and nonstationary three-dimensional problems. It is established that using Chebyshev polynomials in the Gaussian quadrature formula to evaluate the singular segments of surface integrals reduces the computation time by a factor of 2 to 3 without loss of accuracy compared with the traditional Gauss–Legendre formula.
