The article first presents a typology of healthcare systems based on funding methods and supply contracts and, challenging often presumed performance differences, points to the need for detailed case analysis. The provision of healthcare and insurance typically reflects demand-side and supply-side distortions that prevent competitive markets from functioning effectively. Additional governance mechanisms are needed to ensure an efficient and equitable level of supply.
