Simple Summary: Halyomorpha halys is an alien stink bug species native to south-eastern Asia, and is now widely distributed and very invasive worldwide. Management of this pest by chemical insecticides is not very effective because of the high mobility of the pest species and its innate ability to develop resistance to most of the synthetic insecticides applied. For this reason, classical biological control has been considered, with attention focused on co-evolved egg parasitoids, which oviposit and complete their larval development within a single egg of the host. The detection and collection of the egg parasitoid species is often conducted by exposing newly oviposited egg-masses of the stink bug pest in the field for a few days as sentinels, which can then be parasitized by the egg parasitoids. In newly invaded areas, limiting factors in the use of sentinel eggs include the short amount of time that they are a suitable substrate for the oviposition of the egg parasitoid and the risk of the unintentional release of additional pests from unparasitized eggs. A valid potential alternative is to use sterile sentinel eggs of the pest species. This study focused on the evaluation of the performance of three types of sterile sentinel eggs for the oviposition and the larval development of the egg parasitoid Trissolcus japonicus. The brown marmorated stink bug (BMSB), Halyomorpha halys, is a phytophagous invasive pest native to south-eastern Asia, and it is now distributed worldwide. This species is considered to be one of the most damaging insect pests in North America and in Europe. In agriculture, the predominant approach to managing BMSB is based on the use of insecticides, specifically pyrethroids and neonicotinoids. Unfortunately, the biology of the species and its facility to develop mechanisms of resistance to available pesticides has induced farmers and scientists to develop different, least-toxic, and more effective strategies of control. In a territorial area-wide approach, the use of a classical biological control program in combination with other least-toxic strategies has been given prominent consideration. Following exploratory surveys in the native range, attention has focused on Trissolcus japonicus, a small scelionid egg parasitoid wasp that is able to oviposit and complete its larval development in a single egg of H. halys. A common method for detecting egg parasitoids in the native range involves the placement of so-called 'sentinel' egg masses of the pest in the environment for a short period, which are then returned to the laboratory to determine if any of them are parasitized. Outside of the area of origin, the use of fertile sentinel eggs of the alien species may lead to the further release of the pest species; an alternative is to use sterile sentinel eggs to record the presence of new indigenous egg parasitoids or to detect the dispersal of alien species (in this case, T. japonicus) released in a new environment to control the target insect pest species. This study evaluated the performance of three types of sterile sentinel eggs as a suitable substrate for the oviposition and larval development of the egg parasitoid T. japonicus in a context of combining classical biological control with a Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) approach. Trissolcus japonicus (Ashmead) (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae), an egg parasitoid native to regions of Asia where H. halys originated, seems to be one of the most promising solutions for decreasing pest pressure. In 2020, field releases of T. japonicus were approved in Italy with the aim of releasing 120,000 parasitoids. Thus, it was necessary to develop an efficient rearing system to support this biological control program. In this study, some parameters that could influence the rearing of T. japonicus on cold-stored eggs of H. halys were investigated. Refrigeration at 6 °C for as long as several months is an effective method of storage for H. halys egg masses. Female parasitoids produced the highest number of progeny when exposed to egg masses for 72 h. Adult wasps could also be stored at 16 °C for up to 90 days with a negligible decrease in survival, but a significant decrease in production of progeny. In Italy, releases of T. japonicus in the field were authorized in 2020. In this study, some parameters that could influence the rearing of T. japonicus in insectaries were investigated. A significantly higher production of progeny was observed on host eggs stored at 6 °C (86.5%) compared to −24 °C (48.8%) for up to two months prior to exposure to parasitism. There were no significant differences in progeny production from single females in a vial provided with only one egg mass (83.2%) or 10 females inside a cage with 6 egg masses (83.9%). The exposure of parasitoids to refrigerated (6 °C) egg masses of H. halys for 72 h led to a significantly higher production of progeny (62.1%) compared to shorter exposures for 48 (44.0%) or 24 h (37.1%). A decline in production of progeny by the same female was detected between the first (62.1%) and the second parasitization (41.3%). Adult parasitoids stored at 16 °C for up to 90 days had an 87.1% survival rate, but a significant decrease in progeny production was detected. Previous studies have modelled the potential distribution of H. halys and one of its principal natural enemies, Trissolcus japonicus (Ashmead) (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae). Here, we developed a similar model of the potential distribution of Trissolcus mitsukurii (Ashmead), which is a primary parasitoid of H. halys in Japan, and which was introduced to Australia in the 1960s to control another introduced pest. We used the three models to examine the overlap in the projected distributions of both T. mitsukurii and T. japonicus with H. halys, and to assess the potential for the two Trissolcus species to help mitigate the impacts of H. halys in its global adventive range. We found that T. mitsukurii should be able to significantly expand its range globally, and that there is a significant degree of overlap in the projected ranges of T. mitsukurii, T. japonicus and H. halys. Simple Summary: The Asian brown marmorated stink bug, Halyomorpha halys, is an invasive crop pest introduced into Europe in the 2000s. Due to its high harmfulness, and the increased chemical use for its control in the invaded areas, research has focused on biological control. In North Italy, the native parasitoid Trissolcus kozlovi emerged from field-collected H. halys eggs and proved to successfully parasitize H. halys eggs in the laboratory. Therefore, since little is known on T. kozlovi, this study aimed at assessing its physiological host range on 12 bug species in the laboratory, as well as its potential as a biological control agent of H. halys in the field by releases in two hazelnut orchards. In the laboratory, among the tested bug species, only Nezara viridula was an unsuitable host. On all others, T. kozlovi was able to develop, even if at different levels, suggesting that it is as oligophagous as Trissolcus japonicus, with which it shares many similarities. In the field, T. kozlovi was found to parasitize H. halys eggs, but only immediately after field releases. Therefore, further field surveys are required to assess its favorably environmental conditions and its possible interaction with T. japonicus, currently present in Italy. Trissolcus kozlovi (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae) emerged from field-laid eggs of Halyomorpha halys (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) in North Italy, and it emerged in significantly higher numbers from fresh H. halys eggs compared to other native scelionids. Since few data on T. kozlovi are available, its host-specificity and some biological traits were investigated in laboratory tests, and its impact after augmentative releases was evaluated in two hazelnut orchards. Among the 12 tested bug species (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae, Scutelleridae), only Nezara viridula was an unsuitable host, while the highest offspring proportions were obtained from Arma custos, Pentatoma rufipes, and Peribalus strictus, followed by Acrosternum heegeri and Palomena prasina. Furthermore, when reared on P. strictus, T. kozlovi showed a high longevity as well as a high adaptation to H. halys eggs. In both hazelnut orchards, T. kozlovi emerged from H. halys eggs after field releases, but it was not found in the next two years. The physiological host range of T. kozlovi was quite similar to that of T. japonicus, and probably T. kozlovi has just begun to attack H. halys as a new host. This aspect needs to be further investigated, as well as its favorable environmental conditions, its distribution and also its possible interaction with T. japonicus, currently present in Italy. Simple Summary: Surveys of egg parasitoids of the brown marmorated stink bug, Halyomorpha halys, were conducted in 2018 and 2019 in green-fleshed 'Hayward' kiwifruit orchards in Mei County, Shaanxi Province, China, to assess the abundance and diversity of parasitoid communities under two different management systems. Parasitism occurred from June to August and from May to August across the two survey seasons, respectively. Five parasitoid species were recovered from successfully parasitized H. halys egg masses, where Trissolcus japonicus and Trissolcus cultratus were the predominant species. The abundance of T. japonicus varied throughout the season in both orchards in both survey seasons. Monthly T. japonicus abundance showed a unimodal distribution in 2018, peaking in July. There were two peaks (May–June and August) in the 2019 season. This study provides valuable information on the season-long abundance and diversity of egg parasitoids of H. halys in kiwifruit, and most importantly on the abundance and effectiveness, relative to other parasitoids, of T. japonicus in kiwifruit orchards. To develop effective and targeted biocontrol tactics for the brown marmorated stink bug, Halyomorpha halys, in crop habitats, a good understanding is essential of the abundance and diversity of its parasitoids in different crop habitats in its native range. To obtain information on the egg parasitoid communities of H. halys in kiwifruit, surveys using sentinel egg masses were conducted in 2018 and 2019. These assessed the species composition of egg parasitoids of H. halys in green-fleshed 'Hayward' kiwifruit orchards, and quantified their season-long abundances in orchards under two different management systems. Parasitism was observed from June to August 2018 (mean parasitism: 48%) and from May to August 2019 (mean parasitism: 29%) across the experimental orchards. In total, five different parasitoid species were found across the two surveys seasons in the kiwifruit orchards, Trissolcus japonicus, T. cultratus, T. plautiae, Anastatus japonicus, and Acroclisoides sp., where T. japonicus and T. cultratus were the predominant species. Monthly T. japonicus abundance data had a unimodal distribution in 2018, peaking in July. There were two peaks (May–June and August) in the 2019 season. Overall, T. japonicus was significantly more abundant in the organic orchard than the conventionally managed orchard only in 2018, and its monthly abundance differed significantly in the two orchards in the two survey seasons. Simple Summary: Invasive species that are freed of associated natural predators increase in population and disrupt the management plans of growers. The brown marmorated stink bug, Halyomorpha halys, is an invasive species that originated in Asia. A promising management tactic for the species is to release an associated parasitoid, the samurai wasp, Trissolcus japonicus. Populations of the samurai wasp have begun to adventively establish in several regions, including Pennsylvania. In order to monitor and use the species as an alternative management strategy to insecticides, it is imperative to understand the baseline populations during the early establishment phase. The aims of this study were to determine if the samurai wasp is already present in commercial orchards in Pennsylvania, where the brown marmorated stink bug has been present in high numbers since approximately 2010. Native Trissolcus wasps were also identified. This study found the samurai wasp in eight counties in Pennsylvania with several orchards containing populations of the species within orchard blocks. These baseline data provide a starting point for controlling H. halys naturally, which was previously controlled only with broad-spectrum insecticides. The samurai wasp, Trissolcus japonicus (Ashmead) (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae), is an egg parasitoid associated with the brown marmorated stink bug, Halyomorpha halys (Stål) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae). Since 2014, adventive populations of T. japonicus have been detected in 14 US states, in the Canadian provinces of British Columbia and Ontario, and in two European countries, Switzerland and Italy. Establishing baseline information about populations of T. japonicus is important, as this species is not host specific to H. halys and the potential ecological effects of the accidental introductions are not fully known. In this study, yellow sticky cards were deployed at commercial fruit orchards in nine counties in Pennsylvania separated by more than 400 km. Trissolcus japonicus was detected on cards in eight counties, and in two habitats, in the orchard and at the forest border. Other native species of Scelionidae known to attack the eggs of H. halys were also identified, including Trissolcus euschisti (Ashmead), Trissolcus brochymenae (Ashmead), and Telenomus podisi Ashmead (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae). These results are important baseline ecological knowledge for both T. japonicus, which appears to be established in orchards throughout Pennsylvania, and other native Scelionidae. Classical biological control is foreseen as the most effective approach to reduce populations of H. halys. The egg parasitoid Trissolcus japonicus is the most important candidate biological control agent. Halyomorpha halys is a severe agricultural pest of Asian origin that has invaded many countries throughout the world. Pesticides are currently the favored control methods, but as a consequence of their frequent use, often disrupt Integrated Pest Management. Biological control with egg parasitoids is seen as the most promising control method over the long-term. Knowledge of the reproductive biology under laboratory conditions of the most effective candidates (Trissolcus japonicus and Trissolcus mitsukurii) for optimizing production for field releases is strongly needed. Rearing of these egg parasitoids was tested by offering three different host supply regimes using new emerged females and aged, host-deprived females in different combinations. Results showed a mean progeny per female ranging from 80 to 85 specimens for T. japonicus and from 63 to 83 for T. mitsukurii. Sex ratios were strongly female biased in all combinations and emergence rates exceeded 94% overall. Cumulative curves showed that longer parasitization periods beyond 10–14 days (under the adopted rearing regimes) will not lead to a significantly increase in progeny production. However, ageing females accumulate eggs in their ovaries that can be quickly laid if a sufficient number of host eggs are supplied, thus optimizing host resources. Our data showed that offering H. halys egg masses to host-deprived female Trissolcus once a week for three weeks allowed its eggs to accumulate in the ovary, providing the greatest number of offspring within a three week span.
