A Ti3AlC2 MAX phase-based laminated composite material has been produced from titanium, aluminum, and carbon starting powders by a free self-propagating high-temperature synthesis compression method on a Ti–6Al–4V titanium alloy. We have studied the structure and phase composition of the material and measured its microhardness and modulus of elasticity. A comparative analysis of the results has shown that the time delay before exposure to pressure (1 or 5 s) influences the structure and properties of the laminated composite material. This paper considers the main trends of structure formation in graded composite materials based on the Ti3AlC2 MAX phase on titanium under combustion and high-temperature deformation conditions in the unconfined self-propagating high-temperature synthesis compaction method. We demonstrate that a compact graded composite material can be obtained in tens of seconds in one processing step at relatively low pressures (50 MPa). Varying the delay time before applying pressure, we can control the structure and mechanical properties of the resulting composite material. The largest number of carbide grains are formed in the upper part of the material. As the titanium layer is approached, the number of such grains decreases, which is accompanied by an increase in the number of platelike MAX phase grains. We have studied mechanical characteristics of the synthesized materials: variation of microhardness along the height of the composite material and its modulus of elasticity and bending strength. The variation in the grain size of a titanium carbide-based material with a cobalt binder is studied theoretically and experimentally in relation to its location in the chamber of a die, matrix, and along the length of the sample after SHS extrusion. Our experimental results show that the average grain size in a material synthesized without any external load is 4.9 μm. Densification in a die reduces it to 3.8 μm, and extrusion of the material considerably reduces the average grain size, down to 2 μm, which is consistent with theoretical predictions.
