This paper presents a brief review of the state-of-the-art in the field of the preparation and characterization of the most widespread types of ferrites: ferrites with the spinel structure, hexaferrites, ferrites with the garnet structure, and orthoferrites. The present review is concerned primarily with advances in the synthesis and characterization of ferrites with various structures in the past two years (2020 and 2021). We compare available data on the feasibility of replacing trivalent Fe atoms by other atoms and discuss potential applications of ferrite solid solutions. The present results make it possible to identify promising directions of the development of this area of research and the associated current problems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
