Hydrothermal reactions of CdCl2·2.5H2O with 3,6-bis(imidazol-1-yl)carbazole (bmcz), 2-amine-1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid (2-NH2-1,4-H2BDC) or 1,4-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid (1,4-H2NDC) afforded two coordination polymers, [Cd(2-NH2-1,4-BDC)(bmcz)]n (1) and [Cd(1,4-NDC)(bmcz)]n (2). Complexes 1 and 2 were characterized by elemental analysis, IR, powder X-ray diffraction, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. 1 and 2 are isomorphic and exhibit 3D supermolecular structures. The solid state luminescent and optical properties of 1 and 2 at ambient temperature were also investigated. A comparative study on their photocatalytic activity toward the degradation of methylene blue in polluted water was explored.

A Zn(II)-based porous coordination polymer (PCP) {[Zn2(ppt)2(fdc)(H2O)2]·2DMF}n (1) (H2fdc = 9H-fluorene-2,7-dicarboxylic acid, Hppt = 3-(2-pyrazinyl)-5-(4-pyridyl)-1,2,4-triazole) has been synthesized under hydrothermal conditions. The resulting PCP shows a 7-fold interpenetrated 3D structure that can be simplified as a diamond-like structure with Zn1 as node and fdc− and Zn(ppt)2 as spacers. It exhibits strong luminescence at room temperature in solid-state. Luminescent property study shows that 1 can be used as a fluorescent sensor for nitrobenzene (NB).

Hydrothermal reactions of CdCl2·2.5H2O with 2-amine-4,4′-bis(1-imidazolyl)-bibenzene (abimb) and 5-hydroxy-1,3-benzenedicarboxylic acid (5-HO-1,3-H2BDC) or 5-oxyacetate isophthalic acid (H3OAIP) afforded two 3D Cd(II) coordination polymers, [Cd(5-HO-1,3-BDC)(abimb)]n (1) and {[Cd3(OAIP)2(abimb)2(H2O)3]·H2O}n (2). Complexes 1 and 2 were characterized by elemental analysis, IR, powder X-ray diffraction, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. 1 can be considered as having a 3D doubly pillared-layer framework constructed through 2D undulated (4,4) layers and abimb pillars. 2 exhibits a 3D pillared-layer framework derived from 2D (6,3) bilayers and abimb pillars. The Schlafli symbols for the two frameworks are (412 · 63) (1) and (62 · 84)2(65 · 8) (2), respectively. The thermal and photoluminescent properties of 1 and 2 were also investigated.

A manganese diphosphonate Mn(hpedpH2)·3H2O [hpedpH4 = 1-hydroxy-2-(2-pyridyl)ethylidene-1,1-diphosphonic acid] has been synthesized under hydrothermal conditions. It shows a ladder-like chain structure in which the edge-shared {MnO6} octahedral are linked by {CPO3} tetrahedral through corner-sharing. The magnetization measurements reveal that dominant antiferromagnetic interactions are mediated between the magnetic centers and the compound experiences a field-induced magnetic transition at low temperature.

Two copper(II) coordination polymers [Cu(atza)2]n · 2nH2O (1) and [Cu(atza)2(4,4′-bipy)0.5 · H2O]n (2) [atza = 5-aminotetrazole-1-acetato] have been synthesized and characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis, element analysis and IR spectra. Compound 2 is a offspring from reaction of a preformed compound 1 with 4,4′-bipyridyl. The two connected modes of the 2D network layered are provided through μ-atza and/or 4,4′-bipyridyl bridges, and forming 3D supramolecular structures by hydrogen bonding interactions. Two novel coordination compounds [Mn(tza) · (H2O)2]n (1) and [CuNa2(tza)2 · (H2O)4]n (2) (tza = tetrazole-5-acetato) were synthesized by reaction of tetrazole-5-ethyl acetate with Mn(ClO4)2 · 6H2O and CuCl2 · 2H2O in sodium hydroxide solution, respectively. Compound 1 has a one-dimensional (1D) polymeric chain that are bridged by tza linker, while compound 2 has two crystallographically independent metal centers (Cu and Na), that are bridged by tza into a 2D layer structure. The magnetic susceptibility study of 1 demonstrates the presence of antiferromagnetic interaction between two adjacent Mn(II) ions.

The reaction of 6-chloro-2-hydroxypyridine (Hchp) with Co(ClO4)2·6H2O in CH3CN, afforded a hexanuclear complex [Co6(chp)12(H2O)6]. In the structure, adjacent Co2+ ions are bridged by chp− ligands into a wheel. Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility studies reveal that the complex shows antiferromagnetic coupling between the metal ions.

The hydrothermal reaction of 4-cyanobenzoic acid with Ca(ClO4)2·6H2O yields the one-dimensional calcium-based coordination polymer [Ca(L)2(H2O)2]n 1 (where L= 4-cyanobenzoic acid) with strong blue fluorescent emission, and its solid-state structure has been characterized by X-ray single-crystal diffraction studies. Crystal data for 1: monoclinic, space group P2/n, a=7.154 (2), b=16.402 (3), c=7.549 (2) A; β=115.83 (2)° ; Z=2; R=0.0536 for 1410 independent reflections with I>2α(I).

The hydrothermal reaction of cadmium hydroxide with 4-sulfobenzoic acid and 2,2′-bipyridine yields 1D coordination polymer [Cd2(L)2(2,2′-bipy)2(H2O)2]n 1 (where L = 4-sulfobenzoic acid), with blue fluorescent emission in which each [Cd2(L)2(2,2′-bipy)2(H2O)2] unit (an approximate rectangular molecular box) is linked together by μ3 carboxylate to result in the formation of 1D chain coordination polymer. Crystal data for 1: triclinic, space group P-1(No.2), a=8.8350(16), b=9.4770(16), c=11.8019(15) A ; α=99.174(11), β=105.776(13), γ=113.718(15)°; V=829.1(2) A 3 ; Z=2; R1=0.0206, wR2=0.0526 for 2925 independent reflections with I>2σ(I).
