Abstract

The complex H2(di o-aminophenyl etioporphyrin) (DPE) can undergo condensation with the addition of nicotinoyl chloride HCl in triethylamine to produce (H2 DPE)-(py)2 in 76% yield. Insertion of Ni(II) and Cu(II) in the binucleating porphyrin core results in the formation of mononuclear complexes having a free pyridine binding site. Moreover, the introduction of another metal group via M'(DMSO)2Cl2 reactions in the mononuclear complex, leads to the formation of the dinuclear (M- DPE)-(py)2M'Cl2, wherein M represents Pd, Pt and Zn.

Abstract

Whether transition metals can be entrapped inside fullerenes has remained unclear for a long time. Here mass spectrometric proof of entrapment of the group VIII transition-metal platinum (Pt) in fullerenes is first reported. Theoretical calculations on the example of La2PtC90 show that La2Pt@C2(99915)-C90 is the most stable isomer. Unlike other reported endohedral metal atoms, the entrapped Pt atom is negatively charged. This work provides valuable clues for the synthesis of some important missing endohedral metallofullerenes.

Abstract

The synthesis and characterization of a new binucleating porphyrin ligand, {alpha},{alpha}-5,15-bis(o-(nicotinoylamido)phenyl)-2,8,12,18-tetraethyl-3,7,13,17-tetramethylporphyrin, (H{sub 2}(DPE))-(py){sub 2} is reported. Treatment of (H{sub 2}(DPE))-(py){sub 2} with methanol solutions of Ni(II) or Cu(II) leads to the formation of mononuclear metal complexes, (M(DPE))-(py){sub 2}, in which the metal has inserted into the porphyrin core, leaving the pyridine binding site free. Addition of a second metal to form a binuclear complex, (M(DPE))-(py){sub 2}M{prime}Cl{sub 2}, can be accomplished using the reagent M{prime}(DMSO){sub 2}Cl{sub 2}, M{prime} = Pd, Pt, and Zn. (Ni(DPE))-(py){sub 2} and (Cu(DPE))-(py){sub 2}PtCl{sub 2} have been characterized by single-crystal X-ray analysis. Pt-Pt distances between the two molecules in the asymmetric unit are 3.766 (3) {angstrom}.
