Abstract

An exothermic self-sustaining reaction of MBF4 (M = Li, Na, K) with lithium nitride and sodium azide produces crystalline boron nitride. Selection of proper solid-state-precursor avoids crystallization energy barriers, associated with conventional synthesis. Precursors and reactions scale determine the yield and crystalline nature of boron nitrides. X-ray diffraction and elemental analysis characterize these compounds.
