This study reports that the well-known Co(III) precursor Co(η 5 -Cp*)I 2 (CO) ( 1 ) is an effective precatalyst for dehydrocoupling reactions of phosphines. Reaction monitoring by NMR, complemented by ESI-MS and EPR, suggests that Co(III) complexes containing secondary and primary phosphine ligands play an important role in this catalysis but that redox chemistry is also facile for these complexes, resulting in paramagnetic species. Representative examples of the mono(phosphine) complexes Co(η 5 -Cp*)I 2 (PR 2 H) ( 2 ) and Co(η 5 -Cp*)I 2 (PRH 2 ) ( 4 ) and bis(phosphine) complexes [Co(η 5 -Cp*)I(PR 2 H) 2 ] I ( 3 ) have been prepared. The characterization of these complexes through structural, computational, spectroscopic, and electrochemical analysis is reported and serves as a foundation for considering their mechanistic significance in the observed catalytic dehydrocoupling chemistry.

Understanding the structure and function of lytic polysaccharide monooxygenases (LPMOs), copper enzymes that degrade recalcitrant polysaccharides, requires the reliable atomistic interpretation of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) data on the Cu(II) active site. Among various LPMO families, the chitin-active Pl AA10 shows an intriguing phenomenology with distinct EPR signals, a major rhombic and a minor axial signal. Here, we combine experimental and computational investigations to uncover the structural identity of these signals. X-band EPR spectra recorded at different pH values demonstrate pH-dependent population inversion: the major rhombic signal at pH 6.5 becomes minor at pH 8.5, where the axial signal dominates. This suggests that a protonation change is involved in the interconversion. Precise structural interpretations are pursued with quantum chemical calculations. Given that accurate calculations of Cu g -tensors remain challenging for quantum chemistry, we first address this problem via a thorough calibration study. This enables us to define a density functional that achieves accurate and reliable prediction of g -tensors, giving confidence in our evaluation of Pl AA10 LPMO models. Large models were considered that include all parts of the protein matrix surrounding the Cu site, along with the characteristic second-sphere features of Pl AA10. The results uniquely identify the rhombic signal with a five-coordinate Cu ion bearing two water molecules in addition to three N-donor ligands. The axial signal is attributed to a four-coordinate Cu ion where only one of the waters remains bound, as hydroxy. Alternatives that involve decoordination of the histidine brace amino group are unlikely based on energetics and spectroscopy. These results provide a reliable spectroscopy-consistent view on the plasticity of the resting state in Pl AA10 LPMO as a foundation for further elucidating structure-property relationships and the formation of catalytically competent species. Our strategy is generally applicable to the study of EPR parameters of mononuclear copper-containing metalloenzymes.

Blue copper proteins continue to challenge experiment and theory with their electronic structure and spectroscopic properties that respond sensitively to the coordination environment of the copper ion. In this work, we report state-of-the art electronic structure studies for geometric and spectroscopic properties of the archetypal "Type I" copper protein azurin in its Cu(II) state. A hybrid quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) approach is used, employing both density functional theory (DFT) and coupled cluster with singles, doubles, and perturbative triples (CCSD(T)) methods for the QM region, the latter method making use of the domain-based local pair natural orbital (DLPNO) approach. Models of increasing QM size are employed to investigate the convergence of critical geometric parameters. It is shown that convergence is slow and that a large QM region is critical for reproducing the short experimental Cu-SCys112 distance. The study of structural convergence is followed by investigation of spectroscopic parameters using both DFT and DLPNO-CC methods and comparing these to the experimental spectrum using simulations. The results allow us to examine for the first time the distribution of spin densities and hyperfine coupling constants at the coupled cluster level, leading us to revisit the experimental assignment of the 33 S hyperfine splitting. The wavefunction-based approach to obtain spin-dependent properties of open-shell systems demonstrated here for the case of azurin is transferable and applicable to a large array of bioinorganic systems.

Strain effects on g and metal hyperfine coupling tensors, A , are often manifested in Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) spectra of transition metal complexes, as a result of their intrinsic and/or solvent-mediated structural variations. Although distributions of these tensors are quite common and well understood in continuous-wave (cw) EPR spectroscopy, reported strain effects on ligand hyperfine coupling constants are rather scarce. Here we explore the case of a conformationally flexible Cu(II) complex, [Cu{Ph 2 P(O)NP(O)Ph 2 -κ 2 O,O '} 2 ], bearing P atoms in its second coordination sphere and exhibiting two structurally distinct CuO 4 coordination spheres, namely a square planar and a tetrahedrally distorted one, as revealed by X-ray crystallography. The Hyperfine Sublevel Correlation (HYSCORE) spectra of this complex exhibit 31 P correlation ridges that have unusual inverse or so-called "boomerang" shapes and features that cannot be reproduced by standard simulation procedures assuming only one set of magnetic parameters. Our work shows that a distribution of isotropic hyperfine coupling constants (hfc) spanning a range between negative and positive values is necessary in order to describe in detail the unusual shapes of HYSCORE spectra. By employing DFT calculations we show that these hfc correspond to molecules showing variable distortions from square planar to tetrahedral geometry, and we demonstrate that line shape analysis of such HYSCORE spectra provides new insight into the conformation-dependent spectroscopic response of the spin system under investigation.

Calcium is an abundant, nontoxic metal that finds many roles in synthetic and biological systems including the oxygen-evolving complex (OEC) of photosystem II. Characterization methods for calcium centers, however, are underdeveloped compared to those available for transition metals. Valence-to-core X-ray emission spectroscopy (VtC XES) selectively probes the electronic structure of an element's chemical environment, providing insight that complements the geometric information available from other techniques. Here, the utility of calcium VtC XES is established using an in-house dispersive spectrometer in combination with density functional theory. Spectral trends are rationalized within a molecular orbital framework, and Kβ 2,5 transitions, derived from molecular orbitals with primarily ligand p character, are found to be a promising probe of the calcium coordination environment. In particular, it is shown that calcium VtC XES is sensitive to the electronic structure changes that accompany oxo protonation in Mn 3 CaO 4 -based molecular mimics of the OEC. Through correlation to calculations, the potential of calcium VtC XES to address unresolved questions regarding the mechanism of biological water oxidation is highlighted.

A recently reported synthetic complex with a Mn 4 CaO 4 core represents a remarkable structural mimic of the Mn 4 CaO 5 cluster in the oxygen-evolving complex (OEC) of photosystem II (Zhang et al., Science 2015, 348, 690). Oxidized samples of the complex show electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) signals at g ≈ 4.9 and 2, similar to those associated with the OEC in its S 2 state (g ≈ 4.1 from an S = 5 / 2 form and g ≈ 2 from an S = 1 / 2 form), suggesting similarities in the electronic as well as geometric structure. We use quantum-chemical methods to characterize the synthetic complex in various oxidation states, to compute its magnetic and spectroscopic properties, and to establish connections with reported data. Only one energetically accessible form is found for the oxidized "S 2 state" of the complex. It has a ground spin state of S = 5 / 2 , and EPR simulations confirm it can be assigned to the g ≈ 4.9 signal. However, no valence isomer with an S = 1 / 2 ground state is energetically accessible, a conclusion supported by a wide range of methods, including density matrix renormalization group with full valence active space. Alternative candidates for the g ≈ 2 signal were explored, but no low-spin/low-energy structure was identified. Therefore, our results suggest that despite geometric similarities the synthetic model does not mimic the valence isomerism that is the hallmark of the OEC in its S 2 state, most probably because it lacks a coordinatively flexible oxo bridge. Only one of the observed EPR signals can be explained by a structurally intact high-spin one-electron-oxidized form, while the other originates from an as-yet-unidentified rearrangement product. Nevertheless, this model provides valuable information for understanding the high-spin EPR signals of both the S 1 and S 2 states of the OEC in terms of the coordination number and Jahn-Teller axis orientation of the Mn ions, with important consequences for the development of magnetic spectroscopic probes to study S-state intermediates immediately prior to O-O bond formation.

In transition-metal complexes, the geometric structure is intimately connected with the spin state arising from magnetic coupling between the paramagnetic ions. The tetramanganese-calcium cofactor that catalyzes biological water oxidation in photosystem II cycles through five catalytic intermediates, each of which adopts a specific geometric and electronic structure and is thus characterized by a specific spin state. Here, we review spin-structure correlations in Nature's water-splitting catalyst. The catalytic cycle of the Mn4O5Ca cofactor can be described in terms of spin-dependent reactivity. The lower "inactive" S states of the catalyst, S0 and S1, are characterized by low-spin ground states, SGS = 1/2 and SGS = 0. This is connected to the "open cubane" topology of the inorganic core in these states. The S2 state exhibits structural and spin heterogeneity in the form of two interconvertible isomers and is identified as the spin-switching point of the catalytic cycle. The first S2 state form is an open cubane structure with a low-spin SGS = 1/2 ground state, whereas the other represents the first appearance of a closed cubane topology in the catalytic cycle that is associated with a higher-spin ground state of SGS = 5/2. It is only this higher-spin form of the S2 state that progresses to the "activated" S3 state of the catalyst. The structure of this final metastable catalytic state was resolved in a recent report, showing that all manganese ions are six-coordinate. The magnetic coupling is dominantly ferromagnetic, leading to a high-spin ground state of SGS = 3. The ability of the Mn4O5Ca cofactor to adopt two distinct structural and spin-state forms in the S2 state is critical for water binding in the S3 state, allowing spin-state crossing from the inactive, low-spin configuration of the catalyst to the activated, high-spin configuration. Here we describe how an understanding of the magnetic properties of the catalyst in all S states has allowed conclusions on the catalyst function to be reached. A summary of recent literature results is provided that constrains the sequence of molecular level events: catalyst/substrate deprotonation, manganese oxidation, and water molecule insertion.

The interpretation of electron paramagnetic resonance spectra of polynuclear transition metal complexes in terms of individual contributions from each paramagnetic center can be greatly facilitated by the availability of theoretical methods that enable the reliable prediction of local spectroscopic parameters. In this work we report an approach that enables the application of multireference ab initio methods for the calculation of local zero field splitting tensors, one of the leading terms in the spin Hamiltonian for exchange-coupled systems of high nuclearity. The method referred to as local complete active space configuration interaction (L-CASCI) represents a multireference calculation with an active space composed of local orbitals of the center of interest. By successive permutation of the active space to include the localized orbitals corresponding to a particular center of the complex, all on-site parameters can be easily obtained at a high-level of theory with a corresponding low computational cost. Benchmark calculations on synthetic complexes confirm the validity of the approach. As an example of the applicability of the L-CASCI method to large systems, we determine the local anisotropy of the Mn(III) ion of the tetranuclear manganese cluster of photosystem II in both structural forms of its S2 state.

A theoretical, computational, and conceptual framework for the interpretation and prediction of the magnetic anisotropy of transition metal complexes with orbitally degenerate or orbitally nearly degenerate ground states is explored. The treatment is based on complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF) wave functions in conjunction with N-electron valence perturbation theory (NEVPT2) and quasidegenerate perturbation theory (QDPT) for treatment of magnetic field- and spin-dependent relativistic effects. The methodology is applied to a series of Fe(II) complexes in ligand fields of almost trigonal pyramidal symmetry as provided by several variants of the tris-pyrrolylmethyl amine ligand (tpa). These systems have recently attracted much attention as mononuclear single-molecule magnet (SMM) complexes. This study aims to establish how the ligand field can be fine tuned in order to maximize the magnetic anisotropy barrier. In trigonal ligand fields high-spin Fe(II) complexes adopt an orbitally degenerate (5)E ground state with strong in-state spin-orbit coupling (SOC). We study the competing effects of SOC and the (5)E⊗ε multimode Jahn-Teller effect as a function of the peripheral substituents on the tpa ligand. These subtle distortions were found to have a significant effect on the magnetic anisotropy. Using a rigorous treatment of all spin multiplets arising from the triplet and quintet states in the d(6) configuration the parameters of the effective spin-Hamiltonian (SH) approach were predicted from first principles. Being based on a nonperturbative approach we investigate under which conditions the SH approach is valid and what terms need to be retained. It is demonstrated that already tiny geometric distortions observed in the crystal structures of four structurally and magnetically well-documented systems, reported recently, i.e., [Fe(tpa(R))](-) (R = tert-butyl, Tbu (1), mesityl, Mes (2), phenyl, Ph (3), and 2,6-difluorophenyl, Dfp (4), are enough to lead to five lowest and thermally accessible spin sublevels described sufficiently well by S = 2 SH provided that it is extended with one fourth order anisotropy term. Using this most elementary parametrization that is consistent with the actual physics, the reported magnetization data for the target systems were reinterpreted and found to be in good agreement with the ab initio results. The multiplet energies from the ab initio calculations have been fitted with remarkable consistency using a ligand field (angular overlap) model (ab initio ligand field, AILFT). This allows for determination of bonding parameters and quantitatively demonstrates the correlation between increasingly negative D values and changes in the σ-bond strength induced by the peripheral ligands. The trinuclear oxo bridged manganese cluster, [Mn(IV)(3)O(4)(terpy)(terpyO(2))(2)(H(2)O)](S(2)O(8))(2) (5) (terpy = 2,2':2'',6'-terpyridine and terpyO(2) = 2,2':2'',6'-terpyridine 1,1''-dioxide), was isolated in an acidic aqueous medium from the reaction of MnSO(4), terpy, and oxone as chemical oxidant. The terpyO(2) ligands were generated in situ during the synthesis by partial oxidation of terpy. The complex crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/n with a = 14.251(5) A, b = 15.245(5) A, c = 24.672(5) A, alpha = 90.000(5) degrees, beta = 92.045(5) degrees, gamma = 90.000(5) degrees, and Z = 4. The triangular {Mn(IV)(3)O(4)}(4+) core observed in this complex is built up of a basal Mn(mu-O)(2)Mn unit where each Mn ion is linked to an apical Mn ion via mono(mu-O) bridges. The facial coordination of the two tridentate terpyO(2) ligands to the Mn(mu-O)(2)Mn unit allows the formation of the triangular core. 5 is also the first structurally characterized Mn complex with polypyridinyl N-oxide ligands. The variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility data for this complex, in the range of 10-300 K, are consistent with an S = 1/2 ground state and were fit using the spin Hamiltonian H(eff) with S(1) = S(2) = S(3) = 3/2, J(a) = -37 (+/-0.5) and J(b) = -53 (+/-1) cm(-1), where J(a) and J(b) are exchange constants through the mono-mu-oxo and the di-mu-oxo bridges, respectively. The doublet ground spin state of 5 is confirmed by EPR spectroscopic measurements. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations based on the broken symmetry approach reproduce the magnetic properties of 5 very well (calculated values: J(a) = -39.4 and J(b) = -55.9 cm(-1)), thus confirming the capability of this quantum chemical method for predicting the magnetic behavior of clusters involving more than two metal ions. The nature of the ground spin state of the magnetic {Mn(IV)(3)O(4)}(4+) core and the role of ancillary ligands on the magnitude of J are also discussed.

Exchange coupling parameters and isotropic (55)Mn hyperfine couplings of fourteen mixed-valence Mn(III)-Mn(IV) dimers are determined using broken-symmetry density functional theory (DFT) and spin projection techniques. A systematic evaluation of density functional approaches shows that the TPSSh functional yields the best exchange coupling constants among all investigated methods, with deviations from experiment of the order of approximately 10-15%. For the prediction of (55)Mn hyperfine couplings the deficiencies of DFT in the description of core-level spin-polarization and the neglect of scalar relativistic effects lead to systematic deviations between theory and experiment that can be compensated through the use of a universal scaling factor. We determine this scaling factor to be 1.49 and demonstrate that the (55)Mn hyperfine couplings in mixed-valence Mn(III,IV) dimers can be successfully and systematically predicted with the TPSSh functional and the proposed spin projection techniques. The dependence of isotropic (55)Mn hyperfine couplings on the Mn(III) zero-field splitting values is studied in detail using a dimer for which the strong exchange approximation breaks down. In this case we apply a rigorous form of our spin projection technique that incorporates zero-field splitting contributions to the site spin expectation values. These results form the basis for future studies that aim at deducing unknown structures on the basis of computed spectroscopic parameters.

A survey of the potential energy surface for a 1:1 copper dioxygen complex, (C(3)N(2)H(5))CuO(2), reveals two distinct states in the valence region, a singlet ((1)A(1)) and a triplet ((3)B(1)). The former spans a continuum from Cu(III)-O(2)(2-) to Cu(I)-O(2)((1)Delta(g)), while the latter spans Cu(II)-O(2)(1-) to Cu(I)-O(2)((3)Sigma(g)(-)). The point at which the potential energy curves for the two states cross marks an abrupt discontinuity in electron distribution, where the system shifts from dominant Cu(III)-O(2)(2-) character to Cu(II)-O(2)(1-). On this basis, we argue that there is no continuum between Cu(III)-peroxide and Cu(II)-superoxide: the two are represented by distinct states that differ both in symmetry and multiplicity.
