Two copper(II) [2 × 2] grid-like complexes were synthesized and structurally characterized. Investigation of the magnetic properties showed for both the occurrence of intramolecular ferromagnetic interactions.

A novel class of ditopic ligands, 1, was synthesized by the reaction of 2,5-pyrazine-dicarboxaldehyde with 2 equiv of acyl-/aroyl-hydrazine. Their structures were confirmed by 1D and 2D NMR and by X-ray crystallography. They gave heteroleptic Cu(II) dinuclear rack-like complexes of the formula [Cu(2)1(terpy)(2)](OTf)(4), thus undergoing shape changes of significant amplitude. The solid-state structures of these complexes were determined by X-ray crystallography. The magnetic measurements performed on the complexes revealed the presence of antiferromagnetic intramolecular interactions.

The magnetic anisotropy of the supramolecular [2 x 2] grid [Co(II)4L4]8+, with a bis(bipyridyl)-pyrimidine-based ligand L, was investigated by single-crystal magnetization measurements at low temperatures. The magnetization curves exhibit metamagnetic-like behavior and are explained by the weak-exchange limit of a minimal spin Hamiltonian including Heisenberg exchange, easy-axis ligand fields, and the Zeeman term. It is also shown that the magnetic coupling strength can be varied by the substituent R1 in the two-position on the central pyrimidine group of the ligand L.

The rigid linear ligands 1a-g and the macrocycle 2 undergo self-assembly via coordination with copper(I) ions to generate the series of rigid-rack inorganic pseudorotaxanes 3a-g. These complexes have been characterized by analytical and spectroscopic methods. Their architecture has been confirmed by determination of the crystal structures of 3e,f. The complex [Cu(2)(1e)(2)(2)](PF(6))(2) (3e) crystallizes in the space group C2/c, whereas complex [Cu(2)(1f)(2)(2)](PF(6))(2) (3f) gives crystals containing a single enantiomer in the chiral space group P2(1)2(1)2(1). The synthesis and solution structures of 3a-g and the solid-state structures of 3e,f are discussed in relation to the viability of multicomponent self-assembly as an approach to linear metal-ion arrays.

Two hexaphenylhexaazatriphenylene L(1)()and three quaterpyridine L(2)() ligands are well-known to associate around six copper(I) ions to form a cylindrical inorganic cage 1. Spectrophotometric and electrospray mass spectrometry (ESMS) titrations have been conducted to gain information on the thermodynamics and the formation pathway of the assembly 1. From these data, the nature of intermediates present in solution was determined and the association constants of these species were calculated. It was also found that this assembling process occurs with positive cooperativity.
