3. Nature of the interaction between LnIII and CuII ions in the ladder-type compounds (Ln2(Cu(opba))3)*S (Ln = lanthanide element; opba = ortho-phenylenebis(oxamato), S = solvent molecules)

Abstract

Research was conducted to determine the nature of the 4f-3d interaction for lanthanide(III) ions with a first-order orbital momentum. To address this problem, the magnetic properties of the compounds (Ln2(Cu(opba))3)*S were studied. A comparison of the magnetic properties of Ln2Cu3 and Ln2Zn3 for each LnIII ion was performed. Results demonstrate that the LnIII-CuII interaction is ferromagnetic, not only for Ln = Gd but also for Ln = Tb and Dy.

Abstract

Results show that the compounds bearing formulae cat(sub)2M(sub)III[Cu(opba)](sub)3.S, in which M(sup)III is a divalent 3d ion and opba stands for 0-phenylenebis-(oxamato), exhibit honeycomb-like structure. Data reveal that synthesized complexes of the composition of Ln(sub)2[Cu(opba)](sub)3.S also possess honeycomb-like structures.
