The crystal structure of a binuclear Mn(III) complex of a scorpiand-like ligand (L) displays an unsupported single oxo bridging ligand with a Mn(III)-O-Mn(III) angle of 174.7°. Magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate strong antiferromagnetic coupling between the two metal centers. DFT calculations have been carried out to understand the magnetic behavior and to analyze the nature of the observed Jahn-Teller distortion. Paramagnetic (1)H NMR has been applied to rationalize the formation and magnetic features of the complexes formed in solution.

Two series of isoreticular chiral metal-organic frameworks assembled from Ln(III) (Ln = Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Yb), Na(I), and chiral flexible-achiral rigid dicarboxylate ligands, formulated as [NaLn(Tart)(BDC)(H(2)O)(2)] (S1) and [NaLn(Tart)(biBDC)(H(2)O)(2)] (S2) (H(2)Tart = tartaric acid; H(2)BDC = terephthalic acid; H(2)biBDC = biphenyl-4,4'-dicarboxylic acid), were obtained as single phases under hydrothermal conditions. The compounds have been studied by single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction, thermal analyses (TG-MS and DSC), vibrational spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM-EDX), elemental analysis, and X-ray thermodiffractometry. The catalytic activity has been also investigated. The photoluminescence properties of selected compounds have been investigated, exhibiting room temperature tunable UV-vis-IR light emission.

Two new trinuclear copper(II) complexes, [Cu(3)(μ(3)-OH)(daat)(Hdat)(2)(ClO(4))(2)(H(2)O)(3)](ClO(4))(2)·2H(2)O (1) and [Cu(3)(μ(3)-OH)(aaat)(3)(H(2)O)(3)](ClO(4))(2)·3H(2)O (2) (daat = 3,5-diacetylamino-1,2,4-triazolate, Hdat = 3,5-diamino-1,2,4-triazole, and aaat = 3-acetylamino-5-amino-1,2,4-triazolate), have been prepared from 1,2,4-triazole derivatives and structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. The structures of 1 and 2 consist of cationic trinuclear copper(II) complexes with a Cu(3)OH core held by three N,N-triazole bridges between each pair of copper(II) atoms. The copper atoms are five-coordinate with distorted square-pyramidal geometries. The magnetic properties of 1 and 2 and those of five other related 1,2,4-triazolato tricopper(II) complexes with the same triangular structure (3-7) (whose crystal structures were already reported) have been investigated in the temperature range of 1.9-300 K. The formulas of 3-7 are [Cu(3)(μ(3)-OH)(aaat)(3)(H(2)O)(3)](NO(3))(2)·H(2)O (3), {[Cu(3)(μ(3)-OH)(aat)(3)(μ(3)-SO(4))]·6H(2)O}(n) (4), and [Cu(3)(μ(3)-OH)(aat)(3)A(H(2)O)(2)]A·xH(2)O [A = NO(3)(-) (5), CF(3)SO(3)(-) (6), or ClO(4)(-) (7); x = 0 or 2] (aat =3-acetylamino-1,2,4-triazolate). The magnetic and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) data have been analyzed by using the following isotropic and antisymmetric exchange Hamiltonian: H = -J[S(1)S(2) + S(2)S(3)] - j[S(1)S(3)] + G[S(1) × S(2) + S(2) × S(3) + S(1) × S(3)]. 1-7 exhibit strong antiferromagnetic coupling (values for both -J and -j in the range of 210-142 cm(-1)) and antisymmetric exchange (G varying from to 27 to 36 cm(-1)). At low temperatures, their EPR spectra display high-field (g < 2.0) signals indicating that the triangles present symmetry lower than equilateral and that the antisymmetric exchange is operative. A magneto-structural study showing a lineal correlation between the Cu-O-Cu angle of the Cu(3)OH core and the isotropic exchange parameters (J and j) has been conducted. Moreover, a model based on Moriya's theory that allows the prediction of the occurrence of antisymmetric exchange in the tricopper(II) triangles, via analysis of the overlap between the ground and excited states of the local Cu(II) ions, has been proposed. In addition, analytical expressions for evaluating both the isotropic and antisymmetric exchange parameters from the experimental magnetic susceptibility data of triangular complexes with local spins (S) of (1)/(2), (3)/(2), or (5)/(2) have been purposely derived. Finally, the magnetic and EPR results of this work are discussed and compared with those of other tricopper(II) triangles reported in the literature.

New chiral metal organic frameworks, assembled from Y(III), Na(I), and chiral flexible-achiral rigid dicarboxylate ligands, formulated as [NaY(Tart)(BDC)(H(2)O)(2)] (1) and [NaY(Tart)(biBDC)(H(2)O)(2)] (2) (H(2)Tart = Tartaric acid; H(2)BDC = Terephthalic acid; H(2)biBDC = Biphenyl-4,4'-dicarboxylic acid), were obtained as single phases under hydrothermal conditions. Their structures were solved by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD), and characterized by (13)C CPMAS NMR, thermal analyses (thermogravimetry-mass spectrometry (TG-MS) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC)), and X-ray thermodiffractometry. Both compounds crystallize in the orthorhombic chiral space group C222(1) with a = 6.8854(2) A, b = 30.3859(7) A, c = 7.4741(2) A for 1, and a = 6.8531(2) A, b = 39.0426(8) A, c = 7.4976(2) A for 2. 1 and 2 are layered structures whose three-dimensional stability is ensured by strong hydrogen bond interactions. The dehydration of both compounds is accompanied by phase transformation, while the spontaneous rehydration process is characterized by different kinetics, fast in the case of 1 and slow for 2.

The thermal transformations of gamma-titanium phosphate, Ti(PO(4))(H(2)PO(4)) x 2 H(2)O, have been studied by thermal analyses (thermogravimetry (TG) and differential thermal analysis (DTA)) and variable-temperature (31)P magic-angle spinning (MAS)/CPMAS and 2D (31)P-(31)P spin-exchange NMR. The structure of this material has been refined from synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction data (monoclinic, P2(1), a = 5.1811(2) A, b = 6.3479(2) A, c = 23.725(2) A, beta = 102.57(1) degrees). Vyazovkin's model-free kinetic algorithms have been applied to determine the apparent activation energy to both dehydration and dehydroxylation of gamma-titanium phosphate. In these processes, several overlapped steps have been detected. Structural models for Ti(PO(4))(H(2)PO(4)) x H(2)O and Ti(PO(4))(H(2)P(2)O(7))(0.5) intermediate layered phases have been proposed.

Microcrystals of Th(1/4)Zr(2)(PO(4))(3) were synthesized by thermal treatment (900 degrees C) of the material obtained using sol-gel technology (including organic complex formation and etherification). Their structure [hexagonal, P3c, a = b = 8.7311(4) A, c = 23.309(2) A] includes the three-dimensional [Zr(2)(PO(4))(3)](-) NASICON-type network and extraframework 6-fold-coordinated thorium(IV) cations.

One major goal in materials chemistry is to find inexpensive compounds with improved capabilities. Stable inorganic electrides, derived from nanoporous mayenite [Ca12Al14O32]O, are a new family that has very interesting properties such as electronic conductivity combined with transparency. However, an intriguing fundamental problem is to understand the structures of these cubic materials and to characterize their free-electron loadings. Here we report an accurate structural study for three members of the series [Ca12Al14O32]O(1-delta)e(2delta) (delta = 0, 0.15, and 0.45), from single-crystal low-temperature synchrotron X-ray diffraction. The complex structural disorder imposed by the presence of the oxide anions into the mayenite cages has been unravelled. Furthermore, the final electron density map for delta = 0.45 black mayenite has shown electron density localized into the center of the cages, which is the first experimental proof of their electride nature. The reported structural findings challenge theorists to improve predictive models in this new family of materials.

Mayenite inorganic electrides are antizeolite nanoporous materials with variable electron concentration [Ca12Al14O32]2+ square5-deltaO1-delta2-e2delta- (0 < delta < or = 1), where square stands for empty sites. The oxymayenite crystal structure contains positively charged cages where loosely bounded oxide anions are located. These oxygens can be removed to yield electron-loaded materials in which the electrons behave like anions (electrides). Here, a new preparation method, which allows synthesizing powder mayenite electrides easily, is reported. Accurate structural data for the white (delta = 0) and green electride (delta approximately 0.5) are reported from joint Rietveld refinements of neutron and synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data and also from single-crystal diffraction. The electride formation at high temperature under vacuum has been followed in-situ by neutron powder diffraction. The evolution of mayenite crystal structure, including the changes in the key occupation factor of the intracage oxide anions, is reported. Furthermore, the stability of mayenite framework in very low oxygen partial pressure conditions is also studied. It has been found that C12A7 decomposes, at 1373 K in reducing conditions, to give Ca5Al6O14 (C5A3) and Ca3Al2O6 (C3A). The kinetics of this transformation has also been studied. The fit of the transformed fraction to the classic Avrami-Erofe'ev equation gave an "Avrami exponent", n = 2, which indicates that nucleation is fast and the two-dimensional linear growth of the new phases is likely to be the limiting factor.

Complexes [Re(ONCMe2)(CO)3(bipy)] (1) and [Re(ONCMe2)(CO)3(phen)] (2), synthesized by reaction of the respective triflato precursors [Re(OTf)(CO)3(N-N)] (N-N = bipy, phen) with KONCMe2, feature O-bonded monodentate oximato ligands. Compound [Re(CO)3(phen)(HONCMe2)]BAr'4 (3), with a monodentate N-bonded oxime ligand, was prepared by reaction of [Re(OTf)(CO)3(phen)], HONCMe2, and NaBAr'4. Deprotonation of 3 afforded 2. The oximato complexes reacted with p-tolylisocyanate, p-tolylisothiocyanate, maleic anhydride, and tetracyanoethylene, affording the products of the insertion of the electrophile into the Re-O bond, compounds 4-7. One representative of each type of compound was fully characterized, including single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The reactions of 1 and 2 with dimethylacetylenedicarboxylate were found to involve first an insertion as the ones mentioned above but followed by incorporation of water, loss of acetone, and formation of the charge-separated neutral amido complexes 9 and 10. The structure of 9 and 10 was determined by X-ray diffraction, and key features of their electronic distribution were studied using a topological analysis of the electron density as obtained from the Fourier map.

Copper(II) complexes of N-benzothiazolesulfonamides (HL1=N-2-(4-methylphenylsulfamoyl)-6-nitro-benzothiazole, HL2=N-2-(phenylsulfamoyl)-6-chloro-benzothiazole, and HL3=N-2-(4-methylphenylsulfamoyl)-6-chloro-benzothiazole) with ammonia have been synthesized and characterized. The crystal structures of the [Cu(L1)2(NH3)2].2MeOH, [Cu(L2)2(NH3)2], and [Cu(L3)2(NH3)2] compounds have been determined. Compounds and present a distorted square planar geometry. In both compounds the metal ion is coordinated by two benzothiazole N atoms from two sulfonamidate anions and two NH3 molecules. Complex is distorted square-pyramidal. The Cu(II) ion is linked to the benzothiazole N and sulfonamidate O atoms of one of the ligands, the benzothiazole N of another sulfonamidate anion, and two ammonia N atoms. We have tested the superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activity of the compounds and compared it with that of two dinuclear compounds [Cu2(L4)2(OCH3)2(NH3)2] and [Cu2(L4)2(OCH3)2(dmso)2] (HL4=N-2-(phenylsulfamoyl)-4-methyl-benzothiazole). In vitro indirect assays show that the dimeric complexes are better SOD mimics than the monomeric ones. We have also assayed the protective action provided by the compounds against reactive oxygen species over Deltasod1 mutant of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. In contrast to the in vitro results, the mononuclear compounds were more protective to SOD-deficient S. cerevisiae strains than the dinuclear complexes.

[(Ru(eta(6)-p-cymene)(mu-Cl)Cl)(2)] and [(Ru(eta(3):eta(3)-C(10)H(16))(mu-Cl)Cl)(2)] react with Ph(2)PCH(2)P[=NP(=O)(OR)(2)]Ph(2) (R = Et (1a), Ph (1b)) affording complexes [Ru(eta(6)-p-cymene)Cl(2)(kappa(1)-P-Ph(2)PCH(2)P[=NP(=O)(OR)(2)]Ph(2))] (R = Et (2a), Ph (2b)) and [Ru(eta(3):eta(3)-C(10)H(16))Cl(2)(kappa(1)-P-Ph(2)PCH(2)P[=NP(=O)(OR)(2)]Ph(2))] (R = Et (6a), Ph (6b)). While treatment of 2a with 1 equiv of AgSbF(6) yields a mixture of [Ru(eta(6)-p-cymene)Cl(kappa(2)-P,O-Ph(2)PCH(2)P[=NP(=O)(OEt)(2)]Ph(2))][SbF(6)] (3a) and [Ru(eta(6)-p-cymene)Cl(kappa(2)-P,N-Ph(2)PCH(2)P[=NP(=O)(OEt)(2)]Ph(2))][SbF(6)] (4a), [Ru(eta(6)-p-cymene)Cl(kappa(2)-P,O-Ph(2)PCH(2)P[=NP(=O)(OPh)(2)]Ph(2))][SbF(6)] (3b) and [Ru(eta(3):eta(3)-C(10)H(16))Cl(kappa(2)-P,O-Ph(2)PCH(2)P[=NP(=O)(OR)(2)]Ph(2))][SbF(6)] (R = Et (7a), Ph (7b)) are selectively formed from 2b and 6a,b. Complexes [Ru(eta(6)-p-cymene)(kappa(3)-P,N,O-Ph(2)PCH(2)P[=NP(=O)(OR)(2)]Ph(2))][SbF(6)](2) (R = Et (5a), Ph (5b)) and [Ru(eta(3):eta(3)-C(10)H(16))(kappa(3)-P,N,O-Ph(2)PCH(2)P[=NP(=O)(OR)(2)]Ph(2))][SbF(6)](2) (R = Et (8a), Ph (8b)) have been prepared using 2 equiv of AgSbF(6). The reactivity of 3-5a,b has been explored allowing the synthesis of [Ru(eta(6)-p-cymene)X(2)(kappa(1)-P-Ph(2)PCH(2)P[=NP(=O)(OR)(2)]Ph(2))] (R = Et, Ph; X = Br, I, N(3), NCO (9-12a,b)). The catalytic activity of 2-8a,b in transfer hydrogenation of cyclohexanone, as well as theoretical calculations on the models [Ru(eta(6)-C(6)H(6))Cl(kappa(2)-P,N-H(2)PCH(2)P[=NP(=O)(OH)(2)]H(2))]+ and [Ru(eta(6)-C(6)H(6))Cl(kappa(2)-P,O-H(2)PCH(2)P[=NP(=O)(OH)(2)]H(2))]+, has been also studied.

New copper(II) complexes of the cyclic trinuclear type with 1,2,4-triazole ligands, [Cu(3)(mu(3)-OH)(aaat)(3)(H(2)O)(3)](NO(3))(2).H(2)O [Haaat = 3-acetylamino-5-amino-1,2,4-triazole] (1) and ([Cu(3)(mu(3)-OH)(aat)(3)(mu(3)-SO(4))].6H(2)O)(n) [Haat = 3-acetylamino-1,2,4-triazole] (2), have been prepared and characterized by X-ray crystallography and magnetic measurements. Compound 1, the first reported with the ligand (H)aaat, consists of discrete trinuclear cations, associated NO(3)(-) anions and lattice water molecules. Compound 2 consists of unusual chains of trinuclear units with a tridentate sulfato group linking the trimeric units and water molecules stabilizing the crystal lattice. In both complexes, 1 and 2, the trinuclear [Cu(3)(OH)L(3)] unit contains a pyramidal Cu(3)-mu(3)OH core, and an almost flat Cu(3)N(6) ring formed by the N,N-bridging triazolato groups. The Cu...Cu' intratrimeric distances are 3.35-3.37-3.39 A in 1 and 3.34-3.34-3.36 A in 2. The copper atoms are five-coordinated with a distorted square-pyramidal geometry. Magnetic measurements have been performed in the 1.9-300 K temperature range. In the high-temperature region (T > 90 K), experimental data could be satisfactorily reproduced by using an isotropic exchange model, H = -J(S(1)S(2) + S(2)S(3) + S(1)S(3)), with J = -194.6 cm(-1) and g = 2.08 for 1, and J = -185.1 cm(-1) and g = 2.10 for 2. The magnitude of the antiferromagnetic exchange in both complexes is discussed on the basis of their structural features by comparison with reported N,N-pheripherically bridged trinuclear systems. In order to fit the experimental magnetic data at low temperature, an antisymmetric exchange term, H(AS) = G(S(1)xS(2) + S(2)xS(3) + S(1)xS(3)), had to be introduced, with G = 27.8 (1) and 31.0 (2) cm(-1). Crystal data: C(12)H(27)Cu(3)N(17)O(14) (1) (MW = 824.13) crystallizes in the triclinic space group, P(-)1, Z = 2, with the cell dimensions a = 8.852(2) A, b = 11.491(3) A, c = 15.404(3) A, alpha = 70.43(3) degrees, beta = 75.11(2) degrees, gamma = 88.43(2) degrees, and V = 1423.8(5) A(3), D(calcd) = 1.922 g cm(-)(3); the final agreement values were R1 = 0.0822 and wR2 = 0.2300 for 4989 unique reflections. C(12)H(28)Cu(3)N(12)O(14)S (2) (MW = 787.14) crystallizes in the triclinic space group, P(-)1, Z = 2, with the cell dimensions a = 7.146(6) A, b = 14.26(1) A, c = 15.35(2) A, alpha = 109.0(9) degrees, beta = 93.6(9) degrees, gamma = 99.5(7) degrees, and V = 1448(2) A(3), D(calcd) = 1.806 g cm(-3); the final agreement values were R1 = 0.0628 and wR2 = 0.1571 for 3997 "observed" reflections.

A sodium niobium(V) tetrasilicate, Na(2)H(NbO)Si(4)O(11).1.25H(2)O (1), was synthesized hydrothermally at 190 degrees C from a mixture of silicic acid, NaOH, NbCl(5), and H(2)O(2) and added hydrochloric acid. The successive treatment of 1 with nitric acid yielded HNb(H(2)O)Si(4)O(11).H(2)O (2). Contact of 2 with cesium hydroxide solutions converted it to the partially exchanged Cs(+) phase Cs(0.66)H(0.33)Nb(H(2)O)Si(4)O(11) (3). The three structures were solved from X-ray powder diffraction data. All compounds crystallize in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/m with Z = 2, containing the Si(8)O(22)(12-) anion. This new silicate anion type is related to the Si(4)O(11)(6-) unit, which is present in the amphibole series. The difference between both anion types lies in the chain periodicity: two for amphiboles or four for the new niobium silicates. These niobium silicates have framework structures enclosing tunnels in which the alkali cations reside.

Fe(NH(3))(2)PO(4) is synthesized under mild hydrothermal conditions in the presence of urea. The crystal structure is solved for powder X-ray diffraction data. The unit cell is orthorhombic, a = 10.1058(2) Å, b = 6.3676(2) Å, c= 7.5714(2) Å, space group Pnma, Z = 4. The structure consists of a three-dimensional network of FeO(4)N(2) octahedra and PO(4) tetrahedra linked by vertex sharing. Two crystallographically independent ammonia molecules are linked to the iron atom. This compound is the first three-dimensional solid structurally characterized containing Fe-NH(3) bonds.

The treatment of achiral and chiral bis(oxazolin-2'-yl)pyridine (pybox) complexes trans-[RuCl(2)(eta(2)-H(2)C=CH(2))(k(3)-N,N,N-pybox)] [pybox= 2,6-bis(dihydrooxazolin-2'-yl)pyridine] (1a) and [RuCl(2)(eta(2)-H(2)C=CH(2))(k(3)-N,N,N-(SS)-(i)Pr-pybox}] [(SS)-(i)Pr-pybox= 2,6-bis[4'-(S)-isopropyloxazolin-2'-yl]pyridine] (1b) with an excess of triphenylphosphine in dichloromethane at 50 degrees C leads to the formation of the first ruthenium(II) derivatives containing both bis(oxazolin-2'-yl)pyridine and phosphine ligands trans-[RuCl(2)(PPh(3))(kappa(3)-N,N,N-pybox)] (2a) and trans-[RuCl(2)(PPh(3)){kappa(3)-N,N,N-(SS)-(i)Pr-pybox}] (2b). Chiral complex 2b slowly isomerizes in acetone at 50 degrees C to generate cis-[RuCl(2)(PPh(3)){kappa(3)-N,N,N-(SS)-(i)Pr-pybox}] (3). Complex 3 can be also obtained from the reaction of 1b with PPh(3) in MeOH. The structure of 3 has been confirmed by X-ray crystallography [orthorhombic; space group P2(1)2(1)2(1); Z = 4; a = 12.772(6) Å, b = 15.208(5) Å, c = 19.601(7) Å; final R1= 0.0565 and wR2 = 0.0944 (both for I > 2sigma(I))]. The reaction of the achiral pybox complex 2a with 1,1-diphenyl-2-propyn-1-ol and AgBF(4) in CH(2)Cl(2) stereoselectively affords the cationic allenylidene derivative [RuCl(=C=C=CPh(2))(PPh(3))(kappa(3)-N,N,N-pybox)][BF(4)] (4a), while the methoxycarbene complex [RuCl{=C(OMe)CH=CPh(2)}(PPh(3))(kappa(3)-N,N,N-pybox)][PF(6)] (5) is obtained when the reaction is conducted in methanol and in the presence of NaPF(6), via the addition of MeOH to the initially formed allenylidene complex 4a. In contrast, the chiral pybox complex 2b reacts with 1,1-diphenyl-2-propyn-1-ol and NaPF(6) in MeOH to give the stable allenylidene complex [RuCl(=C=C=CPh(2))(PPh(3)){kappa(3)-N,N,N-(SS)-(i)Pr-pybox}][PF(6)] (4b). The X-ray crystal structure of 4b [orthorhombic; space group P2(1)2(1)2(1); Z = 4; a = 14.79(3) Å, b = 16.254(8) Å, c = 22.917(18) Å; final R1 = 0.0545 and wR2 = 0.1381 (both for I > 2sigma(I))] shows an octahedral coordination of the ligands around the ruthenium atom with the chloride and triphenylphosphine ligands in a trans arrangement and mutually cis with respect to the allenylidene moiety. The allenylidene complex 4b is also formed by the reaction of the cis dichloride complex 3 with 1,1-diphenyl-2-propyn-1-ol and NaPF(6) in MeOH. IR, (1)H, (31)P{(1)H}, and (13)C{(1)H} NMR data of all novel compounds are also reported.

The reactions of [Pd(acac)(2)] or [Pd(OAc)(2)](3) with pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylic acid (H(2)dipic) in acetonitrile afford [Pd(dipic)(NCMe)] in high yield. This complex has been used as starting material in the preparation of a variety of neutral an anionic complexes. The dipicolinate anion behaves as a tridentate ligand in all cases, but two modes of coordination are found, depending on the ligand: as a pincer ligand O,N,O-bonded to the same palladium, giving mononuclear complexes, and as an O,N-chelate N,O'-bridging ligand in dinuclear complexes. An X-ray determination of the structure of a dimer, [Pd(dipic)(PBu(3))](2) (monoclinic, space group P2(1)/n, a = 18.144(4) Å, b = 13.191(2) Å, c = 19.571(3) Å, beta = 113.45(2) degrees, Z = 4, R = 0.050, R(w) = 0.054) shows that the ligand is coordinated to one palladium in a eta(2)-N,O chelate fashion and one oxygen atom of the other carboxylate group makes a bridge to the other palladium atom, in a novel bonding mode for the dipic ligand.
