Chalcogen-containing carboranes have been known for several decades and possess stable exopolyhedral B(9)-Se and B(9)-Te σ bonds despite the electron-donating ability of the B(9) vertex. While these molecules are known, little has been done to thoroughly evaluate their electrophilic and nucleophilic behavior. Herein, we report an assessment of the electrophilic reactivity of meta-carboranyl selenyl (II), tellurenyl (II), and tellurenyl (IV) chlorides and establish their reactivity pattern with Grignard reagents, alkenes, alkynes, enolates, and electron-rich arenes. These electrophilic reactions afford unique electron-rich B-Y-C (Y = Se, Te) bonding motifs not commonly found before. Furthermore, we show that meta-carboranyl selenolate, and even meta-carboranyl tellurolate, can be competent nucleophiles and participate in nucleophilic aromatic substitution reactions. Arene substitution chemistry is shown to be further extended to electron-rich species via the palladium mediated cross-coupling chemistry.

Tetraphenylazadipyrromethenes (ADPs) are attractive near-infrared (NIR) dyes because of their simple synthesis and exceptional optical and electronic properties. The typical BF2 and less explored intramolecular BO coordination planarize the molecule, making them promising π-conjugated materials for organic electronic applications. However, their use has been mostly limited to vacuum-deposited devices. To improve the properties, we synthesized and characterized a series of ADP complexes and used density functional theory calculations to further explain the properties. Hexyloxy solubilizing groups increase the complexes' solubility in organic solvents and enable film formation from solution. Phenylethynyls at the pyrrolic positions extend π conjugation, red-shift absorption and emission peaks, and increase the ionization potential (IP) and electron affinity. When the properties of complexes with hexyloxy and phenyethynyl substitutions are compared, the BO complex is more planar and has a smaller IP than the corresponding BF2 complex because of increased electron density on the proximal phenyls. The BO complex has an unusual combination of properties: a solution λmax of 781 nm, emission at 805 nm, a small Stokes shift, and a quantum yield of 6%. It forms transparent films with a low optical gap of 1.22 eV. This new complex is a promising candidate for transparent solar cells and NIR photodetectors.

A new template condensation reaction has been discovered in a mixture of Pt(II), thiobenzamide, and base. Four complexes of the general form [Pt(ctaPhR)2], R = CH3 (1a), H (1b), F (1c), Cl (1d), cta = condensed thioamide, have been prepared under similar conditions and thoroughly characterized by 1H NMR and UV-vis-NIR spectroscopy, (spectro)electrochemistry, elemental analysis, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The ligand is redox active and can be reduced from the initial monoanion to a dianionic and then trianionic state. Chemical reduction of 1a with [Cp2Co] yielded [Cp2Co]2[Pt(ctaPhCH3)2], [Cp2Co]2[1a], which has been similarly characterized with the addition of EPR spectroscopy and SQUID magnetization. The singly reduced form containing [1a]1-, (nBu4N)[Pt(ctaPhCH3)2], has been generated in situ and characterized by UV-vis and EPR spectroscopies. DFT studies of 1b, [1b]1-, and [1b]2- confirm the location of additional electrons in exclusively ligand-based orbitals. A detailed analysis of this redox-active ligand, with emphasis on the characteristics that favor noninnocent behavior in six-membered chelate rings, is included.

This work reports the synthesis and characterization of a new C^N-based cycloplatinated(II) fluoride complex, [Pt(ppy)(PPh3)F] (2; ppy = 2-phenylpyridinate), involving a Pt-F bond. The new complex is highly luminescent in the green area with a high quantum yield of 94.6% at 77 K. A comparison study of the heavier halogen derivatives reveals a descending emission quantum yield order of F > Cl > Br > I. Time-dependent density functional theory calculations ascribe the decreased emission efficiency to the decreasing trend of an intraligand (IL) transition from F to I, which accounts for the major radiative pathway. In addition, 2 is capable of the fluorinating alkyl halides, leading to Csp3-F bond formation at room temperature.

Diastereoselective coordination of racemic secondary phosphines (PHRR') to Cu(I) precursors containing chiral bis(phosphines) (diphos*) was explored as a potential route to P-stereogenic phosphido complexes. Reaction of [Cu(NCMe)4][PF6] with chiral bis(phospholanes) gave [Cu(diphos*)2][PF6] (diphos* = ( R, R)-Me-DuPhos (1), ( R, R)-Et-DuPhos (2), or ( R, R)-Me-FerroLANE) (3)) or the mono(chelates) [Cu(diphos*)(NCMe) n][PF6] (diphos* = ( R, R)- i-Pr-DuPhos, n = 2 (4); diphos* = ( R, R)-Me-FerroLANE, n = 1 (5)). Treatment of [Cu(NCMe)4][PF6] with diphos* and PHMe(Is) (Is = 2,4,6-( i-Pr)3C6H2) gave mixtures of diastereomers of [Cu(( R, R)- i-Pr-DuPhos)(PHMe(Is))(NCMe)][PF6] (6) and [Cu(( R, R)-Me-FerroLANE)(PHMe(Is))][PF6] (7); two of the three expected isomers of the bis(secondary phosphine) complexes [Cu(( R, R)- i-Pr-DuPhos)(PhHP(CH2) nPHPh)][PF6] ( n = 2 (8); n = 3 (9)) were formed preferentially in related reactions. Reaction of the halide-bridged dimers [Cu(( R, R)- i-Pr-DuPhos)(X)]2 or [Cu(( R, R)-Me-FerroLANE)(I)]2 with PHMe(Is) gave the labile adducts Cu(( R, R)- i-Pr-DuPhos)(PHMe(Is))(X) (X = Cl (10), Br (11), I (12)) and Cu(( R, R)-Me-FerroLANE)(PHMe(Is))(I) (13). Complexes 1, 6, and 8-11 were structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. Variable temperature NMR studies of 6 and 8 showed that the secondary phosphine ligands underwent reversible dissociation. Deprotonation of 6 or 7 generated the P-stereogenic phosphido complexes Cu(diphos*)(PMeIs) (diphos* = ( R, R)- i-Pr-DuPhos (14) or ( R, R)-Me-FerroLANE) (17)), observed by 31P NMR spectroscopy, but decomposition also occurred. Density functional theory calculations were used to characterize the diastereomers of thermally unstable 17 and the inversion barrier in a model copper-phosphido complex. These observations provided structure-property relationships which may be useful in developing catalytic asymmetric reactions involving secondary phosphines and P-stereogenic copper phosphido intermediates.

Mixed-metal solid-state framework materials are emerging candidates for advanced applications in catalysis and chemical separations. Traditionally, the syntheses of mixed-metal framework systems rely on postsynthetic ion exchange, metalloligands, or metal-deposition techniques for the incorporation of a second metal within a framework material. However, these methods are often incompatible with the incorporation of low-valent metal centers, which preferentially bind to electronically "soft" ligands according to the tenets of hard/soft acid/base theory. Here we present the electronically differentiated isocyanide/carboxylate heteroditopic linker ligand 1,4-CNArMes2C6H4CO2H (TIBMes2H; TIB = terphenyl isocyanide benzoate; ArMes2 = 2,6-(2,4,6-Me3C6H2)2C6H2), which is capable of selective binding of low-valent metals via the isocyano group and complexation of hard Lewis acidic metals through the carboxylate unit. This heteroditopic ligand also possesses an encumbering m-terphenyl backbone at the isocyanide function to foster coordinative unsaturation. The treatment of TIBMes2H with [Cu(NCMe)4]PF6 in a 3:1 ratio results in preferential binding of the isocyanide group to the Cu(I) center as assayed by multinuclear NMR and IR spectroscopies. IR spectroscopy also provides strong evidence for the formation of a copper(I) tris(isocyanide) complex, wherein the carboxylic acid group remains unperturbed. The addition of TIBMes2 to [Cu(NCMe)4]PF6 in a 4:1 ratio results in crystallization of the hydrogen-bonding network, [Cu(TIBMes2H)4]PF6, in which the formation of R22(8) hydrogen bonds results in a 7-fold interpenetrated diamondoid lattice structure. The preassembly of a copper(I) tris(isocyanide) complex using TIBMes2H, followed by deprotonation and the introduction of ZnCl2, generates a novel and unusual zwitterionic solid-state phase (denoted as Cu/Zn-ISOCN-5; ISOCN = isocyanide coordination network) consisting of a coordinatively unsaturated [Cu(CNR)3]+ cationic secondary building unit (SBU) and an anionic, paddlewheel-type Zn(II)-based SBU of the formulation [Cl2Zn2(O2CR)3]-. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry analysis provided firm evidence for a 2:1 Zn-to-Cu ratio in the network, thereby indicating that the isocyanide and carboxylate groups selectively bind soft and hard Lewis acidic metal centers, respectively. The extended structure of Cu/Zn-ISOCN-5 is a densely packed, noninterpenetrated AB-stacked layer network with modest surface area. However, it is thermally robust, and its formation and compositional integrity validate the use of an electronically differentiated linker for the formation of mixed-metal frameworks incorporating low-valent metal centers.

Hypervalent iodine (HVI) compounds are very important selective oxidants often employed in organic syntheses. Most HVI compounds are strongly associated in the solid state involving interactions between the electropositive iodine centers and nearby electron lone pairs of electronegative atoms. This study examines the impact of remote substituents on select families of HVI compounds as means to achieve predictable two-dimensional extended solid-state materials. Crystallographic analyses of 10 HVI compounds from several related classes of λ3 organoiodine(III) compounds, (diacetoxyiodo)benzenes, (dibenzoatoiodo)benzenes, [bis(trifluoroacetoxy)iodo]benzenes, and μ-oxo-[(carboxylateiodo)benzenes], provide insights into how remote substituents and the choice of carboxylate groups can impact intermolecular interactions in the solid state.

A new air-stable catalyst for the oxidative dehydrogenation of benzylic alcohols under ambient conditions has been developed. The synthesis and characterization of this compound and the related monomeric and dimeric V(IV)- and V(V)-pinF (pinF = perfluoropinacolate) complexes are reported herein. Monomeric V(IV) complex (Me4N)2[V(O)(pinF)2] (1) and dimeric (μ-O)2-bridged V(V) complex (Me4N)2[V2(O)2(μ-O)2(pinF)2] (3a) are prepared in water under ambient conditions. Monomeric V(V) complex (Me4N)[V(O)(pinF)2] (2) may be generated via chemical oxidation of 1 under an inert atmosphere, but dimerizes to 3a upon exposure to air. Complexes 1 and 2 display a perfectly reversible VIV/V couple at 20 mV (vs Ag/AgNO3), whereas a quasi-reversible VIV/V couple at -865 mV is found for 3a. Stoichiometric reactions of 3a with both fluorenol and TEMPOH result in the formation of (Me4N)2[V2(O)2(μ-OH)2(pinF)2] (4a), which contains two V(IV) centers that display antiferromagnetic coupling. In order to structurally characterize the dinuclear anion of 4a, {K(18C6)}+ countercations were employed, which formed stabilizing K···O interactions between the counterion and each terminal oxo moiety and H-bonding between the oxygen atoms of the crown ether and μ-OH bridges of the dimer, resulting in {K(18C6)}2[V2(O)2(μ-OH)2(pinF)2] (4b). The formal storage of H2 in 4a is reversible and proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) from crystals of 4a regenerates 3a upon exposure to air over the course of several days. Furthermore, the reaction of 3a (2%) under ambient conditions with excess fluorenol, cinnamyl alcohol, or benzyl alcohol resulted in the selective formation of fluorenone (82% conversion), cinnamaldehyde (40%), or benzaldehyde (7%), respectively, reproducing oxidative alcohol dehydrogenation (OAD) chemistry known for VOx surfaces and demonstrating, in air, the thermodynamically challenging selective oxidation of alcohols to aldehydes/ketones.

Four groups of rare-earth complexes, comprising 11 new compounds, with fluorinated O-donor ligands ([K(THF)6][Ln(OC4F9)4(THF)2] (1-Ln; Ln = Ce, Nd), [K](THF)x[Ln(OC4F9)4(THF)y] (2-Ln; Ln = Eu, Gd, Dy), [K(THF)2][Ln(pinF)2(THF)3] (3-Ln; Ln = Ce, Nd), and [K(THF)2][Ln(pinF)2(THF)2] (4-Ln; Ln = Eu, Gd, Dy, Y) have been synthesized and characterized. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction data were collected for all compounds except 2-Ln. Species 1-Ln, 3-Ln, and 4-Ln are uncommon examples of six-coordinate (Eu, Gd, Dy, and Y) and seven-coordinate (Ce and Nd) LnIII centers in all-O-donor environments. Species 1-Ln, 2-Ln, 3-Ln, and 4-Ln are all luminescent (except where Ln = Gd and Y), with the solid-state emission of 1-Ce being exceptionally blue-shifted for a Ce complex. The emission spectra of the six Nd, Eu, and Dy complexes do not show large differences based on the ligand and are generally consistent with the well-known free-ion spectra. Time-dependent density functional theory results show that 1-Ce and 3-Ce undergo allowed 5f → 4d excitations, consistent with luminescence lifetime measurements in the nanosecond range. Eu-containing 2-Eu and 4-Eu, however, were found to have luminescence lifetimes in the millisecond range, indicating phosphorescence rather than fluorescence. The performance of a pair of multireference models for prediction of the Ln = Nd, Eu, and Dy absorption spectra was assessed. It was found that spectroscopy-oriented configuration interaction as applied to a simplified model in which the free-ion lanthanide was embedded in ligand-centered Lowdin point charges performed as well (Nd) or better (Eu and Dy) than canonical NEVPT2 calculations, when the ligand orbitals were included in the treatment.

[Y(N(SiMe3)2)3] reacts with (Ad,MeArOH)3mes to form the Y3+ complex [((Ad,MeArO)3mes)Y], 1-Y. This complex reacts with potassium metal in the presence of 2.2.2-cryptand to give a cocrystallized mixture of [K(2.2.2-cryptand)][((Ad,MeArO)3mes)Y], 2-Y, and [K(2.2.2-cryptand)][((Ad,MeArO)3mes)YH], 3-Y. The electron paramagnetic resonance spectrum of this crystalline mixture exhibits an isotropic signal at 77 K (giso = 2.000, Wiso = 1.8 mT), suggesting that 2-Y is best described as a Y3+ complex of the tris(aryloxide)mesitylene radical ((Ad,MeArO)3mes)4–. Evidence of the hydride ligand in 3-Y was obtained by 89Y–1H heteronuclear multiple quantum coherence NMR spectroscopy, and a coupling constant of JYH = 93 Hz was observed. A single crystal of 3-Y was also obtained in pure form and structurally characterized for comparison with the crystal data on the mixed component 2-Ln/3-Ln crystals. A family of magnesium and calcium salen-derivatives was synthesized and characterized for use as subterranean fluid flow monitors. For the Mg complexes, di-n-butyl magnesium ([Mg(Bun)2]) was reacted with N,N′-ethylene bis(salicylideneimine) (H2-salen), N,N′-bis(salicylidene)-1,2-phenylenediamine (H2-saloPh), N,N′-bis(3,5-di-t-butylsalicylidene)-ethylenediamine (H2-salo-But), or N,N′-bis(3,5-di-t-butylsalicylidene)-1,2-phenylenediamine (H2-saloPh-But), and the products were identified by single-crystal X-ray diffraction as [(κ3-(O,N,N′),μ-(O′)saloPh)(μ-(O),(κ2-(N,N′),μ-(O′)saloPh)2(μ-(O),κ3-(N,N′,O′)saloPh′)Mg4]·2tol (1·2tol; saloPh′ = an alkyl-modified saloPh derivative generated in situ), [(κ4-(O,N,N′,O′)saloPh)Mg(py)2]·py (2·py), [(κ4-(O,N,N′,O′)salo-But)Mg(py)2] (3), [(κ4-(O,N,N′,O′)saloPh-But)Mg(py)2]·tol (4·tol), and [(κ3-(O,N,N′),μ-(O′)saloPh-But)Mg]2 (5), where tol = toluene; py = pyridine. Redox-active proanions of the type B_(12)(OCH_2Ar)_(12) [Ar = C_6F_5 (1), 4-CF_3C_6H_4 (2), 3,5-(CF_3)_2C_6H_3 (3)] are introduced in the context of an experimental and computational study of the visible-light-initiated polymerization of a family of styrenes. Neutral, air-stable proanions 1–3 were found to initiate styrene polymerization through single-electron oxidation under blue-light irradiation, resulting in polymers with number-average molecular weights (M_n) ranging from ∼6 to 100 kDa. Shorter polymer products were observed in the majority of experiments, except in the case of monomers containing 4-X (X = F, Cl, Br) substituents on the styrene monomer when polymerized in the presence of 1 in CH_2Cl_2. Only under these specific conditions are longer polymers (>100 kDa) observed, strongly supporting the formulation that reaction conditions significantly modulate the degree of ion pairing between the dodecaborate anion and cationic chain end. This also suggests that 1–3 behave as weakly coordinating anions (WCA) upon one-electron reduction because no incorporation of the cluster-based photoinitiators is observed in the polymeric products analyzed. Overall, this work is a conceptual realization of a single reagent that can serve as a strong photooxidant, subsequently forming a WCA.

To circumvent complications with redox-active ligands commonly encountered in the study of manganese electrocatalysts for CO2 reduction, we have studied the electrochemistry of the manganese mixed carbonyl/isocyanide complexes XMn(CO)3(CNArDipp2)2 (X = counteranion), to evaluate the pairing effects of the counteranion and their influence over the potential necessary for metal-based reduction. The complexes described herein have been shown to act as functional analogues to the known homoleptic carbonyl manganese complexes [Mn(CO)5]n (n = 1–, 0, 1+). The m-terphenyl isocyanide ligand CNArDipp2 improves the kinetic stability of the resulting mixed carbonyl/isocyanide systems, such that conversion among all three oxidation states is easily effected by chemical reagents. Here, we have utilized an electrochemical study to fully understand the redox chemistry of this system and its ability to facilitate CO2 reduction and to provide comparison to known manganese-based CO2 electrocatalysts. The synthesis and characterization of two homoleptic chelating nickel(0) tetracarbene complexes are reported. These are the first group 10 M(0) (M = Ni, Pd, Pt) tetracarbene complexes. These species have geometries intermediate between C2v sawhorse and tetrahedral and show high UV-vis absorption in the 350-600 nm range, with extinction coefficients (ϵ) between 5600 and 9400 M(-1) cm(-1). Density functional theory analysis indicates that this high absorptivity is due to metal-to-ligand charge transfer. In order to better describe the unusual geometries encountered in these complexes, an adjustment to the popular τ4 index for four-coordinate geometries is introduced in order to better delineate between sawhorse and distorted tetrahedral geometries.

For investigation of structure–property relationships in copper phosphine halide complexes, treatment of copper(I) halides with chiral bis(phosphines) gave dinuclear [Cu((R,R)-i-Pr-DuPhos)(μ-X)]2 [X = I (1), Br (2), Cl (3)], [Cu(μ-((R,R)-Me-FerroLANE)(μ-I)]2 (5), and [Cu((S,S)-Et-FerroTANE)(I)]2 (6), pentanuclear cluster Cu5I5((S,S)-Et-FerroTANE)3 (7), and the monomeric Josiphos complexes Cu((R,S)-CyPF-t-Bu)(I) (8) and Cu((R,S)-PPF-t-Bu)(I) (9); 1–3, 5, and 7–9 were structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. Treatment of iodide 1 with AgF gave [Cu((R,R)-i-Pr-DuPhos)(μ-F)]2 (4). DuPhos complexes 1–4 emitted yellow-green light upon UV irradiation at room temperature in the solid state. This process was studied by low-temperature emission spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, which assigned the luminescence to (M + X)LCT (Cu2X2 to DuPhos aryl) excited states. The preparation and characterization of a series of isostructural cobalt complexes [Co(t-Bu)2PEPyEP(t-Bu)2(CH3CN)2][BF4]2(Py = pyridine, E = CH2, NH, O, and X = BF4(1a-c)) and the corresponding one-electron reduced analogues [Co(t-Bu)2PEPyEP(t-Bu)2(CH3CN)2][BF4]2(2a-c) are reported. The reactivity of the reduced cobalt complexes with CO2, CO, and H+to generate intermediates in a CO2to CO and H2O reduction cycle are described. The reduction of 1a-c and subsequent reactivity with CO2was investigated by cyclic voltammetry, and for 1a also by infrared spectroelectrochemistry. The corresponding CO complexes of (2a-c) were prepared, and the Co-CO bond strengths were characterized by IR spectroscopy. Quantum mechanical methods (B3LYP-d3 with solvation) were used to characterize the competitive reactivity of the reduced cobalt centers with H+versus CO2. By investigating a series of isostructural complexes, correlations in reactivity with ligand electron withdrawing effects are made.

The tris(bistrimethylsilylamido) species P[N(SiMe3)2]3 (1) and As[N(SiMe3)2]3 (2) have been prepared through halide metathesis in high yield. Their single crystal X-ray structures, along with that of Sb[N(SiMe3)2]3 (3), complete the series of structurally authenticated group 15 M[N(SiMe3)2]3 complexes (the bismuth analogue (4) has been previously reported). All four complexes possess the expected pyramidal geometries, with progressively longer M–N bond distances from P to Bi but closely similar N–M–N angles (107–104°). The structures of 1–4 also display distortions that are similar to those in f-element M[N(SiMe3)2]3 and M[CH(SiMe3)2]3 complexes, in which M···(β-Si–C) interactions have been identified. Such structural features include distorted M–(N,CH)–Si and (N,CH)–Si–C angles and close M···C and M···Si contacts. DFT calculations confirm that there are no M···(β-Si–C) interactions in 1–4; the bond distortions appear to result from the particular steric crowding that arises in pyramidal M[(N,CH)(SiMe3)2]...

Important requirements for exogenous dyes or contrast agents in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) include an effective concentration of paramagnetic or superparamagnetic ions at the target to be imaged. We report the concise synthesis and characterization of several new enantiopure bifunctional derivatives of (α1R,α4R,α7R,α10R)-α1,α4,α7,α10-tetramethyl-1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane-1,4,7,10-tetraacetic acid (DOTMA) (and their 1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane-1,4,7,10-tetraacetic acid (DOTA) analogues as controls) that can be covalently attached to a contrast agent delivery system using either click or peptide coupling chemistry. Gd complexes of these derivatives can be attached to delivery systems while maintaining optimal water residence time for increased molecular imaging sensitivity. Long chain biotin (LC-biotin) derivatives of the Eu(III) and Gd(III) chelates associated with avidin are used to demonstrate higher efficiencies. Variable-temperature relaxometry, 17O NMR, and nuclear magnetic resonance dispersion (NMRD) spectroscopy used on the complexes and biotin–avidin adducts measure the influence of water residence time and rotational correlation time on constrained and unconstrained systems. The Gd(III)-DOTMA derivative has a shorter water residence time than the Gd(III)-DOTA derivative. Compared to the constrained Gd(III)-DOTA derivatives, the rotationally constrained Gd(III)-DOTMA derivative has ∼40% higher relaxivity at 37 °C, which could increase its sensitivity as an MRI agent as well as reduce the dose of the targeting agent., Multigram preparation of enantiopure bifunctional derivatives of DOTMA for Gd-based contrast agents will enable coupling to targeting systems via click or amide-bond chemistry. The Gd(III)-DOTMA derivative has a shorter water residence time than the Gd(III)-DOTA derivative. Using biotin−avidin complexation to compare constrained systems, the Gd(III)-DOTMA derivative has ∼40% higher relaxivity at 37 °C compared to the DOTA analogue, which could increase its sensitivity as an efficient MRI agent.

Seven new homoleptic complexes of the form A2[M(pin(F))2] have been synthesized with the dodecafluoropinacolate (pin(F))(2-) ligand, namely (Me4N)2[Fe(pin(F))2], 1; (Me4N)2[Co(pin(F))2], 2; ((n)Bu4N)2[Co(pin(F))2], 3; {K(DME)2}2[Ni(pin(F))2], 4; (Me4N)2[Ni(pin(F))2], 5; {K(DME)2}2[Cu(pin(F))2], 7; and (Me4N)2[Cu(pin(F))2], 8. In addition, the previously reported complexes K2[Cu(pin(F))2], 6, and K2[Zn(pin(F))2], 9, are characterized in much greater detail in this work. These nine compounds have been characterized by UV-vis spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, elemental analysis, and for paramagnetic compounds, Evans method magnetic susceptibility. Single-crystal X-ray crystallographic data were obtained for all complexes except 5. The crystallographic data show a square-planar geometry about the metal center in all Fe (1), Ni (4), and Cu (6, 7, 8) complexes independent of countercation. The Co species exhibit square-planar (3) or distorted square-planar geometries (2), and the Zn species (9) is tetrahedral. No evidence for solvent binding to any Cu or Zn complex was observed. Solvent binding in Ni can be tuned by the countercation, whereas in Co only strongly donating Lewis solvents bind independent of the countercation. Indirect evidence (diffuse reflectance spectra and conductivity data) suggest that 5 is not a square-planar compound, unlike 4 or the literature K2[Ni(pin(F))2]. Cyclic voltammetry studies reveal reversible redox couples for Ni(III)/Ni(II) in 5 and for Cu(III)/Cu(II) in 8 but quasi-reversible couples for the Fe(III)/Fe(II) couple in 1 and the Co(III)/Co(II) couple in 2. Perfluorination of the pinacolate ligand results in an increase in the central C-C bond length due to steric clashes between CF3 groups, relative to perhydropinacolate complexes. Both types of pinacolate complexes exhibit O-C-C-O torsion angles around 40°. Together, these data demonstrate that perfluorination of the pinacolate ligand makes possible highly unusual and coordinatively unsaturated high-spin metal centers with ready thermodynamic access to rare oxidation states such as Ni(III) and Cu(III).

A trio of Pt-based heterobimetallic lantern complexes of the form [(py)PtM(SAc)4(py)] (M = Co, 1; Ni, 2; Zn, 3) with unusual octahedral coordination of Pt(II) was prepared from a reaction of [PtM(SAc)4] with excess pyridine. These dipyridine lantern complexes could be converted to monopyridine derivatives with gentle heat to give the series [PtM(SAc)4(py)] (M = Co, 4; Ni, 5; Zn, 6). An additional family of the form [PtM(SAc)4(pyNH2)] (M = Co, 7; Ni, 8; Zn, 9) was synthesized from reaction of [PtM(SAc)4(OH2)] or [PtM(SAc)4] with 4-aminopyridine. Dimethylsulfoxide and N,N-dimethylformamide were also determined to react with [PtM(SAc)4] (M = Co, Ni), respectively, to give [PtCo(SAc)4(DMSO)](DMSO), 10, and [PtNi(SAc)4(DMF)](DMF), 11. Structural and magnetic data for these compounds and those for two other previously published families, [PtM(tba)4(OH2)] and [PtM(SAc)4(L)], L = OH2, pyNO2, are used to divide the structures among three distinct categories based on Pt···Pt and Pt···S distances. In general, the weaker donors H2O and pyNO2 seem to favor metallophilicity and antiferromagnetic coupling between 3d metal centers. When Pt···S interactions are favored over Pt···Pt ones, no coupling is observed and the pKa of the pyridine donor correlates with the interlantern S···S distance. UV-vis-NIR electronic and (1)H NMR spectra provide complementary characterization as well.

Presented herein are synthetic and structural studies exploring the propensity of m-terphenyl isocyanide ligands to provide flanking-ring η(6)-arene interactions to zerovalent molybdenum centers. The alkyl-substituted m-terphenyl isocyanides CNAr(Mes2) and CNAr(Dipp2) (Ar(Mes2) = 2,6-(2,4,6-Me3C6H2)2C6H3; Ar(Dipp2) = 2,6-(2,6-(i-Pr)2C6H3)2C6H3) react with Mo(η(6)-napthalene)2 in a 3:1 ratio to form tris-isocyanide η(6)-arene Mo complexes, in which a flanking mesityl or 2,6-diisopropylphenyl group, respectively, of one isocyanide ligand is bound to the zerovalent molybdenum center. Thermal stability and reactivity studies show that these flanking ring η(6)-arene interactions are particularly robust. To weaken or prevent formation of a flanking-ring η(6)-arene interaction, and to potentially provide access to the coordinatively unsaturated [Mo(CNAr(R))3] fragment, the new halo-substituted m-terphenyl isocyanides CNAr(Clips2) and CNAr(DArF2) (Ar(Clips) = 2,6-(2,6-Cl2C6H3)2(4-t-Bu)C6H2; Ar(DArF2) = 2,6-(3,5-(CF3)2C6H3)2C6H3) have been prepared. Relative to their alkyl-substituted counterparts, synthetic and structural studies demonstrate that the flanking aryl rings of CNAr(Clips2) and CNAr(DArF2) display a lower tendency toward η(6)-binding. In the case of CNAr(DArF2), it is shown that an η(6)-bound 3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl group can be displaced from a zerovalent molybdenum center by three molecules of acetonitrile. This observation suggests that the CNAr(DArF2) ligand effectively masks low-valent metal centers in a fashion that provides access to low-coordinate isocyano targets such as [Mo(CNAr(R))3]. A series of Mo(CO)3(CNAr(R))3 complexes were also prepared to compare the relative π-acidities of CNAr(Mes2), CNAr(Clips2), and CNAr(DArF2). It is found that CNAr(DArF2) shows increased π-acidity relative to CNAr(Mes2) and CNAr(Clips2), despite the fact that its electron-withdrawing CF3 groups are fairly distal to the terminal isocyano unit.

Luminescent homoleptic bismuth(III) complexes have been synthesized by adding several functionalized 8-hydroxyquinolate ligands to bismuth(III) chloride in a 3:1 mole ratio in either ethanol or tetrahydrofuran (THF) solvent. These complexes have been characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, UV-vis spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations to determine their structures and photophysical properties. Reversible dimerization of the mononuclear tris(hydroxyquinolate) complexes was observed in solution and quantified using UV-vis spectroscopy. The fluorescence spectra show a blue shift for the monomer compared with homoleptic aluminum(III) hydroxyquinolate compounds. Four dimeric compounds and one monomeric isomer were characterized structurally. The bismuth(III) centers in the dimers are bridged by two oxygen atoms from the substituted hydroxyquinolate ligands. The more sterically hindered quinolate complex, tris(2-(diethoxymethyl)-8-quinolinato)bismuth, crystallizes as a monomer. The complexes all exhibit low-lying absorption and emission spectral features attributable to transitions between the HOMO (π orbital localized on the quinolate phenoxide ring) and LUMO (π* orbital localized on the quinolate pyridyl ring). Excitation and emission spectra show a concentration dependence in solution that suggests that a monomer-dimer equilibrium occurs. Electronic structure DFT calculations support trends seen in the experimental results with a HOMO-LUMO gap of 2.156 eV calculated for the monomer that is significantly larger than those for the dimers (1.772 and 1.915 eV). The close face to face approach of two quinolate rings in the dimer destabilizes the uppermost occupied quinolate π orbitals, which reduces the HOMO-LUMO gap and results in longer wavelength absorption and emission spectral features than in the monomer form. © 2013 American Chemical Society.

The reaction of first row transition M(II) ions with KSCN in various solvents form tetrahedral (NMe4)2[M(II)(NCS)4] (M = Fe, Co), octahedral trans-M(II)(NCS)2(Sol)4 (M = Fe, V, Ni; Sol = MeCN, THF), and K4[M(II)(NCS)6] (M = V, Ni). The reaction of M(NCS)2(OCMe2)2 (M = Cr, Mn) in MeCN and [Co(NCMe)6](BF4)2 and KSCN in acetone and after diffusion of diethyl ether form M(NCS)2(Sol)2 that structurally differ as they form one-dimensional (1-D) (M = Co; Sol = THF), two-dimensional (2-D) (M = Mn; Sol = MeCN), and three-dimensional (3-D) (M = Cr; Sol = MeCN) extended structures. 1-D Co(NCS)2(THF)2 has trans-THFs, while the acetonitriles have a cis geometry for 2- and 3-D M(NCS)2(NCMe)2 (M = Cr, Mn). 2-D Mn(NCS)2(NCMe)2 is best described as Mn(II)(μ(N,N)-NCS)(μ(N,S)-NCS)(NCMe)2 [= Mn2(μ(N,N)-NCS)2(μ(N,S)-NCS)2(NCMe)4] with the latter μ(N,S)-NCS providing the 2-D connectivity. In addition, the reaction of Fe(NCS)2(OCMe2)2 and 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquino-p-dimethane (TCNQ) forms 2-D structured Fe(II)(NCS)2TCNQ. The magnetic behavior of 1-D Co(NCS)2(THF)2 can be modeled by a 1-D Fisher expression (H = -2JS(i)·S(j)) with g = 2.4 and J/kB = 0.68 K (0.47 cm(-1)) and exhibit weak ferromagnetic coupling. Cr(NCS)2(NCMe)2 and Fe(II)(NCS)2TCNQ magnetically order as antiferromagnets with Tc's of 37 and 29 K, respectively, while Mn(NCS)2(NCMe)2 exhibits strong antiferromagnetic coupling. M(NCS)2(THF)4 and K4[M(NCS)6] (M = V, Ni) are paramagnets with weak coupling between the octahedral metal centers.

A series of Pt-based heterobimetallic lantern complexes of the form [PtM(SAc)4(OH2)] (M = Co, 1; Ni, 2; Zn, 3) were prepared using a facile, single-step procedure. These hydrated species were reacted with 3-nitropyridine (3-NO2py) to prepare three additional lantern complexes, [PtM(SAc)4(3-NO2py)] (M = Co, 4; Ni, 5; Zn, 6), or alternatively dried in vacuo to the dehydrated species [PtM(SAc)4] (M = Co, 7; Ni, 8; Zn, 9). The Co- and Ni-containing species exhibit Pt-M bonding in solution and the solid state. In the structurally characterized compounds 1-6, the lantern units form dimers in the solid state via a short Pt···Pt metallophilic interaction. Antiferromagnetic coupling between 3d metal ions in the solid state through noncovalent metallophilic interactions was observed for all the paramagnetic lantern complexes prepared, with J-coupling values of -12.7 cm(-1) (1), -50.8 cm(-1) (2), -6.0 cm(-1) (4), and -12.6 cm(-1) (5). The Zn complexes 3 and 6 also form solid-state dimers, indicating that the formation of short Pt···Pt interactions in these complexes is not predicated on the presence of a paramagnetic 3d metal ion. These contacts and the resultant antiferromagnetic coupling are also not unique to heterobimetallic lantern complexes with axially coordinated H2O or the previously reported thiobenzoate supporting ligand.

To circumvent complications with redox-active ligands commonly encountered in the study of manganese electrocatalysts for CO

Three complexes are reported from the initial use of dimethylarsinic acid (Me2AsO2H) in Mn(III/IV) cluster chemistry, [Mn4O4(O2AsMe2)6] (3; 2Mn(III), 2Mn(IV)), and [Mn16X4O8(O2CPh)16(Me2AsO2)24] (X = Ca(2+) (4) or Sr(2+) (5); 16Mn(III)). They were obtained from reactions with [Mn12O12(O2CR)16(H2O)4] (R = Me, Ph) either without (3) or with (4 and 5) the addition of X(2+) salts. Complex 3 contains a [Mn4O4](6+) cubane, whereas isostructural 4 and 5 contain a planar loop structure comprising four Mn4 asymmetric "butterfly" units linked by alternating anti,anti μ-O2AsMe2 and {X2(O2AsMe2)(O2CPh)2} units. Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility (χM) data were collected on dried microcrystalline samples of 3-5 in the 5.0-300 K range in a 0.1 T (1000 G) direct-current (dc) magnetic field. Data for 3 were fit to the appropriate Van Vleck equation (using the [Formula: see text] = -2JŜi·Ŝj convention) for a cubane of virtual C2v symmetry, giving J33 = 0.0(1) cm(-1), J34 = -3.4(4) cm(-1), J44 = -9.8(2) cm(-1), and g = 1.99(1), where the Jij subscripts refer to the oxidation states of the interacting Mn atoms. The ground state thus consists of two coupled Mn(IV) and two essentially noninteracting Mn(III). For 4 and 5, low-lying excited states from the high nuclearity and weak couplings prevent fits of dc magnetization data, but in-phase alternating current susceptibility χ'MT data down to 1.8 K indicate them to possess S = 4 ground states, if considered single Mn16 units. If instead they are treated as tetramers of weakly coupled Mn4 units, then each of the latter has an S = 2 ground state. Complexes 4 and 5 also exhibit very weak out-of-phase χ″M signals characteristic of slow relaxation, and magnetization versus dc field scans on a single crystal of 4·15MeCN at T ≥ 0.04 K showed hysteresis loops but with unusual features suggesting the magnetization relaxation barrier consists of more than one contribution.

A series of heterobimetallic lantern complexes with the central unit {PtM(SAc)4(NCS)} have been prepared and thoroughly characterized. The {Na(15C5)}[PtM(SAc)4(NCS)] series, 1 (Co), 2 (Ni), 3 (Zn), are discrete compounds in the solid state, whereas the {Na(12C4)2)}[PtM(SAc)4(NCS)] series, 4 (Co), 5 (Ni), 6 (Zn), and 7 (Mn), are ion-separated species. Compound 7 is the first {PtMn} lantern of any bridging ligand (carboxylate, amide, etc.). Monomeric 1-7 have M(2+), necessitating counter cations that have been prepared as {(15C5)Na}(+) and {(12C4)2Na}(+) variants, none of which form extended structures. In contrast, neutral [PtCr(tba)4(NCS)]∞ 8 forms a coordination polymer of {PtCr}(+) units linked by (NCS)(-) in a zigzag chain. All eight compounds have been thoroughly characterized and analyzed in comparison to a previously reported family of compounds. Crystal structures are presented for compounds 1-6 and 8, and solution magnetic susceptibility measurements are presented for compounds 1, 2, 4, 5, and 7. Further structural analysis of dimerized {PtM} units reinforces the empirical observation that greater charge density along the Pt-M vector leads to more Pt···Pt interactions in the solid state. Four structural classes, one new, of {MPt}···{PtM} units are presented. Solid state magnetic characterization of 8 reveals a ferromagnetic interaction in the {PtCr(NCS)} chain between the Cr centers of J/kB = 1.7(4) K.

Several potentially tridentate pyridyl and phenolic Schiff bases (apRen and HhapRen, respectively) were derived from the condensation reactions of 2-acetylpyridine (ap) and 2′-hydroxyacetophenone (Hhap), respectively, with N-R-ethylenediamine (RNHCH2CH2NH2, Ren; R = H, Me or Et) and complexed in situ with iron(II) or iron(III), as dictated by the nature of the ligand donor set, to generate the six-coordinate iron compounds [FeII(apRen)2]X2 (R = H, Me; X– = ClO4–, BPh4–, PF6–) and [FeIII(hapRen)2]X (R = Me, Et; X– = ClO4–, BPh4–). Single-crystal X-ray analyses of [FeII(apRen)2](ClO4)2 (R = H, Me) revealed a pseudo-octahedral geometry about the ferrous ion with the FeII–N bond distances (1.896–2.041 A) pointing to the 1A1 (dπ6) ground state; the existence of this spin state was corroborated by magnetic susceptibility measurements and Mossbauer spectroscopy. In contrast, the X-ray structure of the phenolate complex [FeIII(hapMen)2]ClO4, determined at 100 K, demonstrated stabilization of the ferric state; the...

A hybrid terphenyl/o-carborane ligand building block is synthesized by the reaction of m-terphenylalkyne with B10H14. This sterically demanding substituent can be installed into ligands, as demonstrated by the preparation of carboranylphosphine. The bulky phosphine reacts with [ClRh(CO)2]2 to produce monophosphine complex ClRhL(CO)2, which subsequently extrudes CO under vacuum to afford the dimeric species [ClRhL(CO)]2. The latter complex does not react with excess phosphine and is resistant toward cyclometalation, which is in contrast to related o-carborane phosphine complexes. Data from a single-crystal X-ray diffraction study are utilized to quantify the steric impact of the ligand via the percent buried volume approach.

Synthetic studies are presented addressing the oxidative decarbonylation of molybdenum and tungsten complexes supported by the encumbering m-terphenyl isocyanide ligand CNAr(Dipp2) (Ar(Dipp2) = 2,6-(2,6-(i-Pr)(2)C(6)H(3))(2)C(6)H(3)). These studies represent an effort to access halide or pseudohalide M/CNAr(Dipp2) species (M = Mo, W) for use as precursors to low-coordinate, low-valent group 6 isocyanide complexes. The synthesis and structural chemistry of the tetra- and tricarbonyl tungsten complexes trans-W(CO)(4)(CNAr(Dipp2))(2) and trans-W(NCMe)(CO)(3)(CNAr(Dipp2))(2) are reported. The acetonitrile adducts trans-M(NCMe)(CO)(3)(CNAr(Dipp2))(2) (M = Mo, W) react with I(2) to form divalent, diiodide complexes in which the extent of decarbonylation differs between Mo and W. In the molybdenum example, the diiodide, dicarbonyl complex MoI(2)(CO)(2)(CNAr(Dipp2))(2) is generated, which has an S = 1 ground state in solution. Paramagnetic group 6 MX(2)L(4) complexes are rare, and the structure of MoI(2)(CO)(2)(CNAr(Dipp2))(2) is discussed in relation to other diamagnetic and C(2v)-distorted MX(2)L(4) complexes. Diiodide MoI(2)(CO)(2)(CNAr(Dipp2))(2) reacts further with I(2) to effect complete decarbonylation, producing the paramagnetic tetraiodide complex trans-MoI(4)(CNAr(Dipp2))(2). The reactivity of the trans-M(NCMe)(CO)(3)(CNAr(Dipp2))(2) (M = Mo, W) complexes toward benzoyl peroxide is also surveyed, and it is shown that dicarboxylate complexes can be obtained by oxidative or salt-elimination routes. The reduction behavior of the tetraiodide complex trans-MoI(4)(CNAr(Dipp2))(2) toward Mg metal and sodium amalgam is studied. In benzene solution under N(2), trans-MoI(4)(CNAr(Dipp2))(2) is reduced by Na/Hg to the η(6)-arene-dinitrogen complex, (η(6)-C(6)H(6))Mo(N(2))(CNAr(Dipp2))(2). The diiodide-η(6)-benzene complex (η(6)-C(6)H(6))MoI(2)(CNAr(Dipp2))(2) is an isolable intermediate in this reduction reaction, and its formation and structure are discussed in context of putative low-coordinate, low-valent molybdenum isocyanide complexes.

Four Fe(III) compounds and one Fe(II) compound containing mononuclear, homoleptic, fluorinated phenolate anions of the form [Fe(OAr)(m)](n-) have been prepared in which Ar(F) = C(6)F(5) and Ar' = 3,5-C(6)(CF(3))(2)H(3): (Ph(4)P)(2)[Fe(OAr(F))(5)], 1, (Me(4)N)(2)[Fe(OAr(F))(5)], 2, {K(18-crown-6)}(2)[Fe(OAr(F))(5)], 3a, {K(18-crown-6)}(2)[Fe(OAr')(5)], 3b, and {K(18-crown-6)}(2)[Fe(OAr(F))(4)], 6. Two dinuclear Fe(III) compounds have also been prepared: {K(18-crown-6)}(2)[(OAr(F))(3)Fe(μ(2)-O)Fe(OAr(F))(3)], 4, and {K(18-crown-6)}(2)[(OAr(F))(3)Fe(μ(2)-OAr(F))(2)Fe(OAr(F))(3)], 5. These compounds have been characterized with UV-vis spectroscopy, elemental analysis, Evans method susceptibility, and X-ray crystallography. All-electron, geometry-optimized DFT calculations on four [Ti(IV)(OAr)(4)] and four [Fe(III)(OAr)(4)](-) species (Ar = 2,3,5,6-C(6)Me(4)H, C(6)H(5), 2,4,6-C(6)Cl(3)H(2), C(6)F(5)) with GGA-BP and hybrid B3LYP basis sets demonstrated that, under D(2d) symmetry, π donation from the O 2p orbitals is primarily into the d(xy) and d(z(2)) orbitals. The degree of donation is qualitatively consistent with expectations based on ligand Brønsted basicity and supports the contention that fluorinated phenolate ligands facilitate isolation of nonbridged homoleptic complexes due to their reduced π basicity at oxygen.

Ethylene cross-bridged tetraamine macrocycles are useful chelators in coordination, catalytic, medicinal, and radiopharmaceutical chemistry. Springborg and co-workers developed trimethylene cross-bridged analogues, although their pendant-armed derivatives received little attention. We report here the synthesis of a bis-carboxymethyl pendant-armed cyclen with a trimethylene cross-bridge (C3B-DO2A) and its isomeric ethylene-cross-bridged homocyclen ligand (CB-TR2A) as well as their copper(II) complexes. The in vitro and in vivo properties of these complexes are compared with respect to their potential application as 64Cu-radiopharmaceuticals in positron emission tomography (PET imaging). The inertness of Cu-C3B-DO2A to decomplexation is remarkable, exceeding that of Cu-CB-TE2A. Electrochemical reduction of Cu-CB-TR2A is quasi-reversible, whereas that of Cu-C3B-DO2A is irreversible. The reaction conditions for preparing 64Cu-C3B-DO2A (microwaving at high temperature) are relatively harsh compared to 64Cu-CB-TR2A (basic ethanol). The in vivo behavior of the 64Cu complexes was evaluated in normal rats. Rapid and continual clearance of 64Cu-CB-TR2A through the blood, liver, and kidneys suggests relatively good in vivo stability, albeit inferior to 64Cu-CB-TE2A. Although 64Cu-C3B-DO2A clears continually, the initial uptake is high and only about half is excreted within 22 h, suggesting poor stability and transchelation of 64Cu to proteins in the blood and/or liver. These data suggest that in vitro inertness of a chelator complex may not always be a good indicator of in vivo stability., Isomeric trimethylene and ethylene cross-bridged tetraamine ligands C3B-DO2A and CB-TR2A have been prepared and their Cu(II) complexes characterized and compared. Each chelator has been successfully labeled with Copper-64 and evaluated in an animal model for potential PET imaging application.

The anhydrides of [hydroxy(methanesulfonato-O)]iodobenzene (HMIB) and [hydroxy(toluenesulfonato-O)]iodobenzene (HTIB) were prepared by drying acetonitrile solutions of the compounds. The anhydrides of the hypothetical compounds [hydroxy(chloroacetato)-O]iodobenzene and [hydroxy(iodoacetato)-O]iodobenzene were obtained from aqueous solutions. Crystallographic structures were obtained for the anhydrides, except that of HTIB. The electron-domain geometries of the I atoms vis-a-vis secondary I...O bonds were explored. The presence of delocalized bonding in groupings of O and I atoms was suggested. A linear relationship between the C-I-O angles and the I-O bond orders was observed.

Treatment of 2 equiv of Au(THT)Cl (THT = tetrahydrothiophene) with the bis(secondary) phosphines HP(R) approximately PH(R) (linker approximately = (CH(2))(3), R = Mes = 2,4,6-Me(3)C(6)H(2) (1), R = Is = 2,4,6-(i-Pr)(3)C(6)H(2) (2), R = Ph (4); approximately = (CH(2))(2), R = Is (3); HP(R) approximately PH(R) = 1,1'-(eta(5)-C(5)H(4)PHPh)(2)Fe (5)), gave the dinuclear complexes (AuCl)(2)(mu-HP(R) approximately PH(R)) (6-10). Dehydrohalogenation with aqueous ammonia gave the phosphido complexes [(Au)(2)(mu-P(R) approximately P(R))](n) (11-15). Ferrocenyl- and phenylphosphido derivatives 15 and 14 were insoluble; the latter was characterized by solid-state (31)P NMR spectroscopy. Isitylphosphido complexes 12 and 13 gave rise to broad, ill-defined NMR spectra. However, mesitylphosphido complex 11 was formed as a single product, which was characterized by multinuclear solution NMR spectroscopy, solid-state (31)P NMR spectroscopy, and elemental analyses. Mass spectrometry suggested that this material contained eight gold atoms (n = 4). A structure proposed on the basis of the (1)H NMR spectra, containing a distorted cube of phosphorus atoms, was confirmed by X-ray crystallographic structure determination. NMR spectroscopy, including measurement of the hydrodynamic radius of 11 by (1)H NMR DOSY, suggested that this structure was maintained in solution. Density functional theory (DFT) structural calculations on 11 were also in good agreement with the solid-state structure.

The synthesis of tripbipy, a new substituted bipyridine ligand (6,6'-(2,4,6-triisopropylphenyl)-2,2'-bipyridine), and the syntheses, structures, and magnetic properties of the first coordination compounds based on this ligand are described. Tripbipy was synthesized by the Suzuki coupling of 2,4,6-triisopropylphenyl boronic acid and 6,6'-dibromo-2,2'-bipyridine. Reported here are the tripbipy complexes of five late first row transition metal chlorides (MCl(2); M = Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn). Four of the complexes MCl(2)tripbipy (M = Fe, Co, Ni, Zn) crystallize in the space group P2(1)/c and are isomorphous with one solvent molecule of crystallization. The complex CuCl(2)tripbipy crystallizes in the space group P2(1)2(1)2(1) with two solvent molecules of crystallization. All MCl(2)tripbipy complexes are four coordinate and contain distorted tetrahedral metal centers. CuCl(2)tripbipy shows a pseudo Jahn-Teller distortion, and X-band electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) in a toluene glass gives approximate g( perpendicular, parallel) values of 2.2 and 2.1. Magnetic measurements (M = Fe, Co, Ni, Cu) are consistent with high spin d(n) configurations (n = 6-9, S = 2, 3/2, 1, 1/2) tetrahedral complexes and give chi(M)T values at 300 K of 3.56, 2.10, 1.01, and 0.37 cm(3) M(-1) K, respectively.

The utility of the 1,3,4,6,7,8-hexahydro-2H-pyrimido[1,2-a]pyrimidinato ligand, (hpp)(-), in uranium chemistry has been probed by synthesizing metallocene complexes and studying their reactivity. (C(5)Me(5))(2)UMe(2) reacts with 1 equiv of Hhpp to form (C(5)Me(5))(2)(hpp)UMe, 1, which does not react further with Hhpp. (C(5)Me(5))(2)UCl(2) reacts with Khpp to form (C(5)Me(5))(2)(hpp)UCl, 2, which similarly does not react with additional Khpp. Complex 2 reacts with NaN(3) to form the azide complex, (C(5)Me(5))(2)(hpp)UN(3), 3. The trivalent uranium (hpp)(-) metallocene complex, (C(5)Me(5))(2)(hpp)U, 4, can be synthesized by the reaction of [(C(5)Me(5))(2)U][BPh(4)] with Khpp and from 2 with KC(8). Complex 4 can be oxidized with Ph(3)P horizontal lineSe to produce the tetravalent product, [(C(5)Me(5))(2)(hpp)U](2)(mu-Se), 5. The reaction of 4 with Me(3)SiN(3) provides the pentavalent uranium complex, (C(5)Me(5))(2)(hpp)U(=NSiMe(3)), 6.

The synthesis and full characterization (mp, NMR, UV/vis, FTIR, and elemental analysis) of 13 bismuth aryloxides are reported. We have prepared bismuth aryloxides with alkyl, aryl, and allylic substituents on the aryl rings. Eleven of these bismuth aryloxides have been characterized with single crystal X-ray diffraction methods. Bismuth-donor interactions (donor = aryl, methoxy) are observed in several cases. Three unexpected bismuth oxo aryloxides (6c, 9c, 11c) were also isolated. Complex C(77)H(102)Bi(4)Br(6)O(8) (6c) results from apparent C-H activation and Bi-C bond formation as a sideproduct in the synthesis of Bi(O-2,6-(i)Pr(2)-4-BrC(6)H(2))(3) (6). Cluster 9c has a Bi(32)O(56) core, and cluster C(90)H(90)Bi(4)Li(2)O(12) (11c) is the second lithium bismuth oxo cluster reported to date.

A synthetic procedure for the sterically encumbered m-terphenyl isocyanide CNAr(Dipp2) (Dipp = 2,6-diisopropylphenyl) is presented. In comparison to the less encumbering m-terphenyl isocyanide ligand CNAr(Mes2), the steric attributes of the flanking Dipp groups effectively control the extent of CNAr(Dipp2) ligation to monovalent Cu and Ag centers and zero-valent Mo centers. Direct structural comparisons of Cu(I) and Ag(I) complexes of both CNAr(Dipp2) and CNAr(Mes2) are made. It was found that only two CNAr(Dipp2) ligands are accommodated by monovalent Cu and Ag centers, whereas three CNAr(Mes2) units can readily bind. As demonstrated by both (1)H NMR and FTIR spectroscopic studies, addition of a third equivalent of CNAr(Dipp2) to [(THF)(2)Cu(CNAr(Dipp2))(2)]OTf in C(6)D(6) solution results in slow isocyanide exchange. However, rapid isocyanide exchange is observed when an additional equivalent of CNAr(Dipp2) is added to (TfO)Ag(CNAr(Dipp2))(2). Three CNAr(Mes2) ligands react smoothly with fac-Mo(CO)(3)(NCMe)(3) to afford the octahedral complex fac-Mo(CO)(3)(CNAr(Mes2))(3), which can be converted irreversibly to the mer isomer upon heating in solution. Contrastingly, addition of CNAr(Dipp2) to fac-Mo(CO)(3)(NCMe)(3) results in a mixture of both the tetracarbonyl and the tricarbonyl complexes trans-Mo(CO)(4)(CNAr(Dipp2))(2) and trans-Mo(NCMe)(CO)(3)(CNAr(Dipp2))(2), respectively, in which the encumbering CNAr(Dipp2) ligands are in a trans-disposition. Ultraviolet irradiation of the preceding mixture in NCMe/Et(2)O under an argon flow provides exclusively the tricarbonyl complex trans-Mo(NCMe)(CO)(3)(CNAr(Dipp2))(2). Addition of free CNAr(Dipp2) to trans-Mo(NCMe)(CO)(3)(CNAr(Dipp2))(2) does not result in the binding of a third isocyanide unit by the Mo center as determined by (1)H NMR spectroscopy. Treatment of trans-Mo(NCMe)(CO)(3)(CNAr(Dipp2))(2) with the Lewis base pyridine (py) affords the complex fac,cis-Mo(py)(CO)(3)(CNAr(Dipp2))(2) as determined by X-ray diffraction. Notably, the encumbering nature of the CNAr(Dipp2) units forces a cis C(iso)-Mo-C(iso) angle of about 100 degrees.

The ferromagnet [FeCp*(2)][TCNE] (T(c) = 4.80 K) has two structural phase transitions at 249 and 282 K that has thwarted the determination of its structure by single crystal X-ray diffraction; however, its structure at 100 K is reported [P2(1)/c, a = 9.710(1) A, b = 14.214(2) A, c = 18.753(2) A, beta = 113.207(2) degrees, V = 2378.7(5) A(3), Z = 4, T = 100 K]. Because of the facile loss of solvent, the ferromagnetic solvates, [FeCp*(2)][TCNE] x yS {S = MeCN [y = 1, P, a = 9.556(2) A, b = 9.781(2) A, c = 16.152(2) A, alpha = 74.860(2) degrees, beta = 84.333(3) degrees, gamma = 65.030(4) degrees, V = 1321.0(4) A3, Z = 2, T = 100 K], EtCN [y = 1/2, Pnma, a = 14.750(5) A, b = 10.577(5) A, c = 33.972(10) A, V = 5301(3) A3, Z = 8, T = 100 K], n-PrCN [y = 1/2, C2/m, a = 35.902(6) A, b = 10.488(2) A, c = 14.302(2) A, beta = 101.396(3) degrees, V = 5279(1) A(3), Z = 8, T = 173 K]} have also been difficult to crystallographically characterize, but have been determined from single crystal X-ray diffraction data. These structures consist of parallel chains of alternating [FeCp*(2)](*+) and [TCNE](*-) ions, with an intrachain Fe...Fe distance of 10.54 +/- 0.09 A. The solvates additionally possess chains of solvent that separate the alternating chains of [FeCp*(2)](*+) and [TCNE](*-) ions. The MeCN solvate forms layers of chains that separate two rows of chains, while the EtCN and n-PrCN solvates form chains surrounded by six chains, and have fewer nonmagnetic coupling pathways that result in higher ordering temperature with respect to the MeCN solvate.

Reaction of the lanthanide metallocene allyl complexes, (C(5)Me(5))(2)Ln(eta(3)-CH(2)CHCH(2))(THF) (Ln = Ce, Sm, Y) with 1,3,4,6,7,8-hexahydro-2H-pyrimido[1,2-a]pyrimidine, Hhpp, forms a series of metallocene complexes, (C(5)Me(5))(2)Ln(hpp) (Ln = Ce, Sm, Y) in which the (hpp)(1-) anion coordinates as a terminal bidentate ligand. Isomorphous structures were observed by X-ray crystallography regardless of the size of the metal. The acetonitrile adduct, (C(5)Me(5))(2)Sm(hpp)(MeCN), was also crystallographically characterized to provide an unusual pair of eight- and nine-coordinate complexes. The coordination mode of the (hpp)(1-) anion in these complexes is compared with that in other heteroallylic metallocenes like the caprolactamate (C(5)Me(5))(2)Y(ONC(6)H(10)) and the dithiocarbamate (C(5)Me(5))(2)Sm(S(2)CNEt(2)), which was also structurally characterized.

A series of calixarene bismuth and antimony complexes have been fully characterized by NMR, X-ray, IR, UV/vis, and elemental analysis. The reactions of SbCl(3) with the monosodium salt of p-tert-butylcalix[4]arene (Bu(t)C4), Bu(t)C4.Na, and the tetralithium salt of para-tert-butylcalix[4]arene, Bu(t)C4.Li(4), afforded two diantimony calix[4]arene complexes Bu(t)C4(SbCl)(2), with different (1)H NMR spectra and different THF coordination, but the same core structures. Other calix[4]arene antimony complexes (HC4(SbCl)(2) 2 and AC4(SbCl)(2) 3, diantimony chloride complexes of calix[4]arene and p-allylcalix[4]arene) and calix[4]arene bismuth complexes (Bu(t)C4(BiCl(2))(2)Li(2) 4, HC4(BiCl(2))(2)Li(2).6DMSO 5, and AC4(BiCl(2))(2)Li(2).4THF 6) were prepared by the reactions of MCl(3) (M = Sb or Bi) with RC4.Li(4) (R = Bu(t), H, or allyl) in a 2:1 molar ratio in THF. The same strategy was applied for Bu(t)C8 (p-tert-butylcalix[8]arene), and the desired bismuth complex [Bu(t)C8(BiCl(2))(4)(mu-Cl)(2)Li(6)][4THF.7DME] 12 was successfully synthesized. Complex 12 contains a planar Bi(4) core with four terminal chlorine atoms, which adopt a syn arrangement with respect to the plane defined by four bismuth atoms, and orient away from each other. A calix[4]arene monobismuth complex 11 was prepared by the reaction of Bi(OBu(t))(3) with the 1,2-disubstituted benzyl ether of calix[4]arene. Complexes 1-6 contain central planar M(2)(mu-O)(2) (M = Sb or Bi) four-membered rings, similar to four-membered rings observed in other calix[4]arene main group metal complexes. Intramolecular bismuth-arene pi interactions are observed in complexes 4-6 and 11 but not 12.

To probe the correlation of unusual (C5Me5)(1-) reactivity with steric crowding in complexes such as (C5Me5)3UMe and (C5Me5)3UCl, slightly less crowded (C5Me5)2(C5Me4H)UX analogues (X = Me, Cl) were synthesized and their reactivity was evaluated. The utility of the cationic precursors [(C5Me5)2UMe](1+), 1, and [(C5Me5)2UCl](1+), 2, in the synthesis of (C5Me5)2(C5Me4H)UMe, 3, and (C5Me5)2(C5Me4H)UCl, 4, was also explored. Since the use of precursor [(C5Me5)2UMe][MeBPh3], 1a, is complicated by the equilibrium between 1a and (C5Me5)2UMe2/BPh3, the reactivity of [(C5Me5)2UMe(OTf)]2, 1b, (OTf = O3SCF3) prepared from (C5Me5)2UMe2 and AgOTf, was also studied. Both 1a and 1b react with KC5Me4H to form 3. Complex 4 readily forms by addition of KC5Me4H to [(C5Me5)2UCl][MeBPh3], generated in situ from (C5Me5)2UMeCl and BPh3. Complex 1b was preferred to 1a for the synthesis of (C5Me5)2(C5H5)UMe, 5, and (C5Me5)2UMe[CH(SiMe3)2], 6, from KC5H5 and LiCH(SiMe3)2, respectively. Complex 6 is the first example of a mixed alkyl uranium metallocene complex. Sterically induced reduction (SIR) reactivity was not observed with 3-6 although the methyl displacements from the (C5Me5)(1-) ring plane for 3 are the closest observed to date to those of SIR-active complexes. The (1)H NMR spectra of 3 and 4 are unusual in that all of the (C5Me4H)(1-) methyl groups are inequivalent. This structural rigidity is consistent with density-functional theory calculations.

[Cr (III)F(NCMe) 5](BF 4) 2.MeCN ( 1) was synthesized from a prolonged dissolution of [Cr (III)(NCMe) 6](BF 4) 3 in MeCN via fluoride abstraction from BF 4 (-). Complex 1 exhibits a crystal field splitting, Delta o, of 17 470 cm (-1) and is a nonaqueous source of Cr (III)F (2+). The reaction of 1 with (NEt 4) 3[Cr (III)(CN) 6] formed a new Prussian-blue-like magnetic material of (NEt 4) 0.04[Cr (III)F] 1.54[Cr (III)(CN) 6](BF 4) 0.12.0.10(MeCN) ( 2) composition. Complex 2 magnetically orders at a critical temperature, T c, of 85 K and at 2 K exhibits magnetic hysteresis with a coercive field, H cr, of 60 Oe and a remanent magnetization, M rem, of 1880 emuOe/mol.

The outcome of the reaction of the bulky metal(II) amides M[N(SiMe3)2]2·nTHF (M = Be, Zn, Ge, Sn, n = 0; M = Mg, Ca, n = 2) with (R)-3,3′-bis(trimethylsilyl)-1,1′-bi-2,2′-naphthol ((R)-1) or (S)-3,3′-bis(dimethylphenylsilyl)-1,1′-bi-2,2′-naphthol ((S)-9) depends on the identity of the metal and the nature of the 3,3′-substituents. When M = Be, Zn, or Ge, these amides serve as useful silylation agents that convert only one of the equivalent hydroxyl groups of the binaphthol (R)-1 to a trimethylsilyl ether, whereas the reactions of (R)-1 with the Mg, Ca, or Sn amides generate a polynuclear complex. The reaction pathway for these interconversions was qualitatively monitored using NMR (1H and 9Be) spectroscopy. Treatment of Ge[N(SiMe3)2]2 with (S)-9 yields both a silyl ether and the chelated germanium(II) binaphthoxide (S)-[Ge{O2C20H10(SiMe2Ph)2-3,3′}{NH3}], which was structurally characterized.

In order to contribute to an understanding of the effects of thioether sulfur ligation in copper-O(2) reactivity, the tetradentate ligands L(N3S) (2-ethylthio-N,N-bis(pyridin-2-yl)methylethanamine) and L(N3S')(2-ethylthio-N,N-bis(pyridin-2-yl)ethylethanamine) have been synthesized. Corresponding copper(I) complexes, [CuI(L(N3S))]ClO(4) (1-ClO(4)), [CuI(L(N3S))]B(C(6)F(5))(4) (1-B(C(6)F(5))(4)), and [CuI(L(N3S'))]ClO(4) (2), were generated, and their redox properties, CO binding, and O(2)-reactivity were compared to the situation with analogous compounds having all nitrogen donor ligands, [CuI(TMPA)(MeCN)](+) and [Cu(I)(PMAP)](+) (TMPA = tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine; PMAP = bis[2-(2-pyridyl)ethyl]-(2-pyridyl)methylamine). X-ray structures of 1-B(C(6)F(5))(4), a dimer, and copper(II) complex [Cu(II)(L(N3S))(MeOH)](ClO(4))(2) (3) were obtained; the latter possesses axial thioether coordination. At low temperature in CH(2)Cl(2), acetone, or 2-methyltetrahydrofuran (MeTHF), 1 reacts with O(2) and generates an adduct formulated as an end-on peroxodicopper(II) complex [{Cu(II)(L(N3S))}(2)(mu-1,2-O(2)(2-))](2+) (4)){lambda(max) = 530 (epsilon approximately 9200 M(-1) cm(-1)) and 605 nm (epsilon approximately 11,800 M(-1) cm(-1))}; the number and relative intensity of LMCT UV-vis bands vary from those for [{Cu(II)(TMPA)}(2)(O(2)(2-))](2+) {lambda(max) = 524 nm (epsilon = 11,300 M(-1) cm(-1)) and 615 nm (epsilon = 5800 M(-1) cm(-1))} and are ascribed to electronic structure variation due to coordination geometry changes with the L(N3S) ligand. Resonance Raman spectroscopy confirms the end-on peroxo-formulation {nu(O-O) = 817 cm(-1) (16-18O(2) Delta = 46 cm(-1)) and nu(Cu-O) = 545 cm(-1) (16-18O(2) Delta = 26 cm(-1)); these values are lower in energy than those for [{Cu(II)(TMPA)}(2)(O(2)(2-))](2+) {nu(Cu-O) = 561 cm(-1) and nu(O-O) = 827 cm(-1)} and can be attributed to less electron density donation from the peroxide pi* orbitals to the Cu(II) ion. Complex 4 is the first copper-dioxygen adduct with thioether ligation; direct evidence comes from EXAFS spectroscopy {Cu K-edge; Cu-S = 2.4 Angstrom}. Following a [Cu(I)(L(N3S))](+)/O(2) reaction and warming, the L(N3S) thioether ligand is oxidized to the sulfoxide in a reaction modeling copper monooxygenase activity. By contrast, 2 is unreactive toward dioxygen probably due to its significantly increased Cu(II)/Cu(I) redox potential, an effect of ligand chelate ring size (in comparison to 1). Discussion of the relevance of the chemistry to copper enzyme O(2)-activation, and situations of biological stress involving methionine oxidation, is provided.

The treatment of dilute aqueous solutions of [hydroxy(tosyloxy)iodo]benzene with aqueous Mg(ClO4)2 produced thin elongated-hexagonal plates exhibiting a supramolecular structure in which tetra-mu-oxopentaiodanyl dication repeat units are joined to each other by significantly ionic bonds and each unit is associated with two perchlorate ions. The linearly extended cationic structure is formed from the 12-atom hexagonal rings of alternating iodine and oxygen atoms, a novel structure. Each 12-membered ring forms a nearly planar hexagonal shape with sides defined by almost linear O-I-O segments (175.7+/-1.6) degrees. The apexes are occupied by bridging oxide ligands where the I-O-I angles deviate only slightly from an ideal 120 degrees hexagonal angle (116.8+/-1.2) degrees, consistent with sp2 hybridization of the bridging oxygen atoms that participate in three-center four-electron bonds with iodine. These 12-atom hexagons are slightly "chair" distorted at the oxygen atoms. The planes of the rings are separated by layers containing the phenyl rings. The perchlorate ions reside in void spaces created by the three-up, three-down arrangement of the phenyl rings around each 12-membered I-O ring and are positioned directly above and below the I-O rings.

With the established chemistry of bridged [(porphyrinate)FeIII-X-CuII(ligand)]n+ [X = O2- (oxo), OH- (hydroxo), O22- (peroxo)] complexes, we investigated the effect of cobalt ion substitution for copper or copper and iron. Thus, in this report, the generation and characterization of new mu-oxo, micro-hydroxo, and micro-peroxo (micro-X) assemblies of [(porphyrinate)MIII-X-CoII/III(TMPA)]n+ assemblies is described, where M = FeIII or CoIII and TMPA = tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine. The mu-oxo complex [(F8TPP)FeIII-O-CoII(TMPA)]+ (1, F8TPP = tetrakis(2,6-difluorphenyl)porphyrinate) was isolated by an acid-base self-assembly reaction of a 1:1 mixture of (F8TPP)FeIII-OH and [CoII(TMPA)(MeCN)]2+ upon addition of triethylamine. The crystal structure of 1.2C4H10O proved the presence of an unsupported Fe-O-Co moiety; angleFe-O-Co = 171.6 degrees and d(Fe...Co) = 3.58 A. Complex 1 was further characterized by UV-vis (lambdamax = 437 (Soret) and 557 nm), 1H NMR [delta 40.6 (pyrrole-H), 8.8 and 8.7 (m-phenyl-H), 8.0 (p-phenyl-H), 4.4 (PY-4H), 2.6 (PY-3H), 1.0 (PY-5H), -1.1 (PY-6H), and -2.7 (TMPA-CH2-) ppm], electrospray ionization (ESI) and matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometric methods, Evans method NMR (microeff = 3.1), and superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) susceptometry (J = -114 cm-1, S = 1). The micro-hydroxo analogue [(F8TPP)FeIII-(OH)-CoII(TMPA)]+ (2) [UV-vis lambdamax = 567 nm; delta 78 ppm (pyrrole-H); Evans NMR microeff = 3.7] was generated by addition of 1 equiv of triflic acid to 1. The protonation is completely reversible, and 1 is regenerated from 2 by addition of triethylamine. While (F8TPP)FeII/[CoII(TMPA)(MeCN)]2+/O2 chemistry does not lead to a stable micro-peroxo species, a dicobalt micro-peroxo complex [(TPP)CoIII-(O22-)-CoIII(TMPA)]2+ (3, TPP = meso-tetraphenylporphyrinate) forms from a reaction of O2 with a 1:1 mixture of the CoII precursor components at -80 degrees C [UV-vis lambdamax = 435 (Soret), 548, and 583 (weak) nm; silent EPR spectrum; diamagnetic NMR spectrum]. The oxygenation/deoxygenation equilibrium is reversible; warming solutions of 3 releases approximately 1 equiv of O2 and the reduced complexes are reformed.

Compound cis,fac-[Mo(eta3-allyl)(CO)2(Hdmpz)3]BAr'4 (1) (Hdmpz = 3,5-dimethylpyrazole, Ar' = 3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl) undergoes rapid substitution of one of the pyrazole ligands by anions, including the low nucleophilic ReO4-, a reaction that afforded [Mo(OReO3)(eta3-allyl)(CO)2(Hdmpz)2] (2), structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction. The new compounds fac-[Mn(CO)3(Hdmpz)3]BAr'4 (4a) and fac-[Mn(CO)3(HtBupz)3]BAr'4 (4b) (HtBupz = 3(5)-tert-butylpyrazole) also undergo pyrazole substitution with most anions, and the product from the reaction with nitrate was crystallographically characterized. Compounds 4a,b were found to be substitutionally stable toward perrhenate, and the adducts [Mn(CO)3(Hdmpz)3].[ReO4] (7a) and [Mn(CO)3(HtBupz)3].[ReO4].[Bu4N].[BAr'4] (7b), crystallographically characterized, display hydrogen bonds between one of the perrhenate oxygens and the N-H groups of two of the pyrazole ligands. The structurally similar adduct [Re(CO)3(Hdmpz)3].[ReO4] (8) was found to result from the interaction of [Re(CO)3(Hdmpz)3]BAr'4 with perrhenate. The reaction of [Re(OTf)(CO)5] with 3,5-dimethylpyrazole (Hdmpz) afforded [Re(CO)5(Hdmpz)]OTf (9). The reaction of 9 with Hdmpz and NaBAr'4 yielded [Re(CO)4(Hdmpz)2]BAr'4 (10), which was found to be unstable toward chloride anion. In contrast, the new compound fac,cis-[Re(CO)3(CNtBu)(Hdmpz)2]BAr'4 (11) is stable in solution in the presence of different anions. Binding constants for 11 with chloride, bromide, and nitrate are 1-2 orders of magnitude lower than those found for these anions and rhenium tris(pyrazole) hosts, indicating that the presence of the third pyrazole ligand is crucial. Compounds fac-[Re(CO)3(HPhpz)3]BAr'4 (14) (HPhpz = 3(5)-phenylpyrazole) and fac-[Re(CO)3(HIndz)3]BAr'4 (15) (HIndz = indazole) are, in terms of anion binding strength and selectivity, inferior to those with dimethylpyrazole or tert-butylpyrazole ligands.
