Olefin-functionalized zirconium-containing monomers which could be incorporated into polyolefin-based plastics and films have been synthesized by attaching olefin-substituted alkoxide and aryloxide ligands to zirconium precursors. The alkoxides and aryloxides were chosen as the ligands because they have strong metal oxygen bonds for zirconium. The process provides a good way for producing precursors for hybrid inorganic/organic materials.

The possible use of arylamide ligands is examined in yttrium and lanthanide complexes and in the preparation of mixed-metal organometallic complexes using aluminum. Arylamido groups as ligands for yttrium and lanthanide metals afford products of different structural forms. Moreover, the products are soluble and stable enough to be analyzed in crystal form. The syntheses can also be extended to the preparation of metals of large and small radii.

Tellumerates (MTe7)n- where n = 2,3 are achieved upon the reaction of appropriate metal substrates with polytelluride solutions in anhydrous N,N-dimethylformamide. The (HgTe7)2- anion, in both the NEt4+ and PPH4+, exhibits a similar structure with only a small discrepancy in the arrangement of the ligand. Anions (AgTe7)3- and (HgTe7)2- incorporate metal atoms that are in trigonal planar coordination to n(super 3)-Te(sub 7)(super4-). The central Te atom of such ligand forms a T-shaped assembly with two Te atoms and the metal atom.

The reduction of alpha-(PPh4)2(Pt(Se4)3) DMF with Li2BEt3H in DMF results in the isolation of the (PPh4)2(Pt(Se4)2). The reaction of the appropriate metal xanthate with Li2Se and Se in DMF is used in the production of the compounds (NEt4)5(2Pd(Se4)(sub 2.)1/2Pd(Se5)2), alpha-(PPh4)2(Pt(Se4)3).DMF and beta-(PPh4)2(Pt(Se4)3).

The interactions of the coinage-metal cations Cu1+, Ag1+ and Au1+ with the (WSe4)2- anion are investigated via NMR spectroscopic and crystallographic studies. The reaction of a suspension of Cu2+, Ag2+ and Au2+ in CH3CN with (NPr4)2(WSe4) generates the compounds (mu-WSe4)((PMe2Ph)2Cu)2, (mu-WSe4)((PMe2Ph)2Ag)2 and (mu-WSe4)((PMe2Ph)2Au)2, respectively. The structure of (mu-WSe4)((PMe2Ph)2Cu)2 possesses a crystallographically imposed 2-fold axis, with the W center and the Cu atoms possessing a tetrahedral and distorted tetrahedral geometries, respectively.

The synthesis and characterization of the first soluble copper and silver telluride anions were reported. Reaction of Cu+ and Ag+ cations in DMF in the presence of PEt3 and NEt4Cl affords the metal telluride salts (Net4)4((Te4)M(micro-Te4)M(Te4)) (M = Cu, Ag). In each anion, the metal atoms are bridged by a Te4 chain and coordinated in a bidentate fashion by Te4 rings. These anions differ from the related sulfide and selenide complexes.

The utility of polydentate monoanionic [Zr(sub 2)(O(super i)Pr)(sub 9)] in generating arene-soluble, unsolvated, mixed-metal Zr/Ce and Zr/Y complexes is described. The synthesis of other mixed-metal zirconium lanthanide complexes is studied to explore the relationship of metal size to structure.

Addition of THF to (KSm(OAr)3)n (Ar = mu-C6H2Bu(t)(2)-2,6-Me-4) generates Sm(II) complex as a potassium 'ate' complex. X-ray crystallographic studies of the complex reveal that Sm(II) is surrounded by only oxygen donor ligands. Potassium arene and aryloxide bridging are responsible for the extended structure of the complex.

Sulfidometalates and selenometalates have conventional bonding, but they are capable of producing strange species such as (Re4 S4(S3)6) (super 4 to 1) and (V2Se13)(super 2-,2). The liganded Q (sub n) (super 2-) constitutes the bondings. The unconventional bonding arrangements are found in the chemistry of the tellurometalates. The dissolution of Li2Te powder with three equivalents of Te powder in DMF yields polytelluride solutions.

SnCl2 reacted with polysulfide and polyselenide solutions to produce (Sn S4 2 S6)2- and(Sn Se4 3)2- anions, respectively. A similar reaction involving a polytelluride solution in the presence of LiBH4 resulted in the synthesis of (Te2Sn u-Te 2 SnTe2)4-. Structural analysis revealed that the anions exhibited similar conformations that were characterized as a two edge-sharing SnQ4 tetrahedra.
