This paper presents the development and verification of a new multi-stage genetic programming (MSGP) technique, called MSGP-LASSO, which was applied for univariate streamflow forecasting in the Sedre River, an intermittent river in Turkey. The MSGP-LASSO is a practical and cost-neutral improvement over classic genetic programming (GP) that increases modelling accuracy, while decreasing its complexity by coupling the MSGP and multiple regression LASSO methods. The new model uses average mutual information to identify the optimum lags, and root mean-square technique to minimize forecasting error. Based on Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency and bias-corrected Akaike information criterion, MSGP-LASSO is superior to GP, multigene GP, MSGP, and hybrid MSGP-least-square models. Abstract: This paper proposes the application of the abductive event calculus to the web service composition and execution problem. There are different approaches to web service composition, which are suitable for different application scenarios. In this paper, we are concerned with the formalization of both the interleaved and template-based approaches using the event calculus framework. First, in the interleaved approach, it is shown that given a set of OWL-S web service descriptions in a service repository and a set of user specified inputs and outputs from domain ontology, the abductive event calculus can be used to generate web service compositions and return values for the outputs by executing the necessary web services. Next, in the template-based approach, it is shown that if generic web service compositions are given as templates using OWL-S, they can be translated into the axioms of the event calculus and the abductive theorem prover can be used to generate the actual web service compositions which can be executed afterwards. Abstract: The importance of technology management is a vital determinant of long-run success or failure of organizations in today’s world. Since technology is a major driver of the global economic development, business professionals seek more effective ways to manage existing and emerging technology. This study proposes a model to understand the links between competitive advantages, competitive priorities and competencies of a firm in the context of the technology management. We use the fuzzy analytical hierarchy process (AHP) to analyze these links. Moreover, we examine the perception of a group of managers from different Turkish firms regarding the technology management. The main result of this paper is that the concept of the management of technology arises to be much more important than both the product technology and the process technology. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
