Cows do not know they are being organically managed and, contrary to many new organic farmers' expectations, the same diseases and problems that occur on conventional farms will also exist on organic ones. However, there are differences between the two systems in the prevalence of these diseases and the measures used to control them. This article reviews these differences in respect of the major disease areas. Veterinary surgeons have an increasingly important role to play in providing services to organic farmers, to ensure that they can sustain profitable production. This article reviews the structure and overall veterinary approach to the organic dairy sector.
