In this paper, we present a practical application of dirty paper coding (DPC) for the Gaussian cognitive Z-interference channel. A two stage transmission scheme is proposed in which the cognitive transmitter first obtains the interference signal from the primary transmitter and then uses DPC to improve the performance of the cognitive link. Numerical results show that causal knowledge of the interference provides more than 3 dB improvement in performance in certain scenarios over a scheme that does not use interference cancellation. Results are also shown when the cognitive transmitter operates in both half-duplex and full-duplex modes.

The authors of [1] have become aware that several equations in [1] were presented with errors. As confirmed in this brief note, neither do the errors invalidate the game theoretic approach proposed in [1] , nor violate the equilibrium of the approach. However, the parameter selection, which is required to preserve the validity and unique equilibrium of the approach, is affected by the errors. We correct the equations with detailed mathematical derivations in the note.

International audience; The huge potential of ultra wide band impulse radio (UWB IR) with multiple access was initially evaluated using the standard Gaussian approximation which assumed that multi user interference could be approximated as classical Gaussian noise. Later the standard Gaussian approximation has been proved to be invalid in several cases. Thus the performance of the classical UWB IR correlation receiver dramatically reduces. We show in this paper how the non Gaussianity of the multi user interference can be exploited, turning the non Gaussianity into an advantage, increasing the performance with respect to the Gaussian interference case which was supposed to be too optimistic until now.

Direct-sequence code-division multiple-access (DSCDMA) cellular systems, such as wideband CDMA (WCDMA), are limited in performance by interference. Linear equalization, such as generalized Rake (G-Rake) receivers and transversal chip equalizers, can theoretically provide significant gains in performance by suppressing interference. In this paper, an adaptive G-Rake receiver is developed, employing practical algorithms for finger placement and weight computation. Finger placement is determined by selecting delays from a candidate set using a "maximal-weight" criterion. Weight computation includes estimation of an impairment covariance matrix using a parametric approach. While described in the context of the downlink, these algorithms can be used in the uplink as well. Both single-antenna and dual-antenna receivers are considered. Link and system performance are evaluated for the downlink, showing significant gains in high-rate coverage.

We consider a fading version of the dirty-paper problem, as proposed by Grover and Sahai. In this formulation, the various signals involved are complex-valued, and the interference (known only to the transmitter) is multiplied by a random complex-valued coefficient, whose phase is known only to the receiver. We focus on a compound channel formulation, and seek to maximize the worst-case performance. We present an achievable strategy modeled on the lattice-based approach of Erez, Shamai and Zamir and propose heuristic methods to optimize its parameters. We also derive an upper bound on the maximum achievable transmission rates. Our bounds are shown to be tight in some settings, yielding a complete characterization of capacity. We also provide simulation results, indicating the practical effectiveness of our approaches.

Previous research on sensor network security mainly considers homogeneous sensor networks, where all sensor nodes have the same capabilities. Research has shown that homogeneous ad hoc networks have poor performance and scalability. The many-to-one traffic pattern dominates in sensor networks, and hence a sensor may only communicate with a small portion of its neighbors. Key management is a fundamental security operation. Most existing key management schemes try to establish shared keys for all pairs of neighbor sensors, no matter whether these nodes communicate with each other or not, and this causes large overhead. In this paper, we adopt a Heterogeneous Sensor Network (HSN) model for better performance and security. We propose a novel routing-driven key management scheme, which only establishes shared keys for neighbor sensors that communicate with each other. We utilize Elliptic Curve Cryptography in the design of an efficient key management scheme for sensor nodes. The performance evaluation and security analysis show that our key management scheme can provide better security with significant reductions on communication overhead, storage space and energy consumption than other key management schemes.

Transmit power limitations and quality-impairing channels present key challenges to wireless communications. A possible solution to these problems is the application of user-cooperation techniques so as to improve link quality. This paper studies the tradeoffs involved in combining user cooperation with practical source and channel coding in systems featuring rate-adaptive source and channel coding of conversational traffic. Performance is measured through the D-SNR curve, which measures the relation between end-to-end distortion and channel signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The D-SNR curve is accurately characterized as a linear function in log-log scales. Also, it is shown that the tradeoffs involved in combining amplify-and-forward or decode-and-forward cooperation with source and channel coding translates into cooperative schemes showing a decrease in distortion at approximately half the rate as non-cooperative schemes but with larger coding gain. Because of this, the studied non-cooperative schemes show better performance only at high SNR. In addition, the D-SNR characterization is used to compare amplify-and-forward and decode-and-forward cooperation for channel codes of different strength and to study the effects of source codec efficiency, where it is shown that diversity gain is reduced proportionally to the source codec loss of efficiency.

We propose and analyze in this paper two new adaptive power controlled minimum selection generalized selection combining (MS-GSC) diversity schemes. The key idea behind these two schemes is to request the transmitter to vary its power level during very adverse channel conditions in order to communicate with the minimum required quality of service. For each scheme, four power control variants accounting for practical implementation constraints including discrete power levels and transmitter gain saturation are proposed and studied. Selected numerical examples, show that ideal continuous power control lowers the average bit error rate of MS-GSC and makes it always meet the specified target quality of service at the expense of an increase in the transmitter gain. Additional numerical examples, show that the power control variants that take into account practical implementation constraints conserve the main features of the ideal continuous power algorithm.

Device placement is a fundamental factor in determining the coverage, connectivity, cost and lifetime of a wireless sensor network (WSN). In this paper, we explore the problem of relay node placement in heterogeneous WSN. We formulate a generalized node placement optimization problem aimed at minimizing the network cost with constraints on lifetime and connectivity. Depending on the constraints, two representative scenarios of this problem are described. We characterize the first problem, where relay nodes are not energy constrained, as a minimum set covering problem. We further consider a more challenging scenario, where all nodes are energy limited. As an optimal solution to this problem is difficult to obtain, a two-phase approach is proposed, in which locally optimal design decisions are taken. The placement of the first phase relay nodes (FPRN), which are directly connected to sensor nodes (SN), is modeled as a minimum set covering problem. To ensure the relaying of the traffic from the FPRN to the base station, three heuristic schemes are proposed to place the second phase relay nodes (SPRN). Furthermore, a lower bound on the minimum number of SPRN required for connectivity is provided. The efficiency of our proposals is investigated by numerical examples.

A l-Bayesian erasure test (BET) based on order statistics with diversity reception for noncoherent M-ary frequency shift keying (FSK) signaling is examined. In the l-BET, the M-ary FSK symbol is erased whenever the a posteriori probability of correct decision, which is a function of the l-largest sums of energy detector outputs, is less than a threshold. For binary FSK signaling in Rayleigh flat fading channels, the 2-BET is found to be the same as the difference threshold test (DTT), which declares an erasure whenever the difference between the largest and the second largest sums of energy detector outputs is less than a threshold. The output threshold test (OTT), which declares an erasure whenever the largest sum of energy detector outputs is less than a threshold, is proved equivalent to the 1-BET for the Rayleigh flat fading channel. Closed-form expressions for the probabilities of correct decision and symbol error for the DTT, Viterbi's ratio threshold test (RTT), and the OTT are derived when square-law combining (SLC) diversity is used. Several erasure tests including the Z-BET, the RTT, the OTT, and the DTT are compared in terms of probability of codeword error. The 2-BET provides almost the same performance as the BET that requires all the sums of energy detector outputs. The 2-BET provides power gains of 0.9 dB and 0.7 dB over the RTT for (7, 3) and (15, 7) Reed-Solomon (RS) codes, respectively, when the probability of codeword error is 10-3 and the diversity order is one.

Partial transmit sequence (PTS) is a proven technique to reduce the peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. It achieves considerable PAPR reduction without distortion, but the high computational complexity of multiple Fourier transforms is a problem in practical systems. To address the complexity, signals at the middle stages of an ?-point radix FFT using decimation in frequency (DIF) are employed for PTS subblocking. We formulate OFDM symbols based on these signals to exploit the periodic autocorrelation function (ACF) of the vectors in the PTS subblock partitioning. Error-correcting codes (ECCs) are employed in the subblocking for the PTS radix FFT. This new technique significantly decreases the computational complexity while providing comparable PAPR reduction to ordinary PTS (O-PTS), even with a small number of stages after PTS partitioning. Numerical results are presented which confirm the PAPR improvements.

We consider the problem of cross-layer resource allocation for wireless networks operating with rechargeable batteries under general arrival, channel state and recharge processes. The objective is to maximize total system utility, defined as a function of the long-term rate achieved per link, while satisfying energy and power constraints. A policy with decoupled admission control and power allocation decisions is proposed that achieves asymptotic optimality for sufficiently large battery capacity to maximum transmission power ratio (explicit bounds are provided). We present first a downlink resource allocation scenario; the analysis is then extended to multihop networks. The policy is evaluated via simulations and is seen to perform very well even in the non-asymptotic regime. This policy is particularly suitable for sensor networks, which typically satisfy the asymptotic conditions required by our methodology.

In this paper, we characterize the cross-correlation function (CCF) between the time-frequency transfer functions (TF)s of two sub-channels of a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless fading channel. The TF of each sub-channel consists of a number of multi-path components caused by propagation of a transmitted signal in random scattering media. The proposed CCF is expressed in terms of several environmental parameters (such as the moment generating function (MGF) of the delay profile (DP) and the pathloss exponent). It is a summation of two terms: the first term is due to the autocorrelation of multi-path components while the second term is due to the cross-correlation of multi-path components. Each term is a product of several correlation functions. Each of these correlation functions represents different dependencies of the wireless channel in terms of time, carrier frequency and the position of the antenna elements around both the transmitter and the receiver site. Interestingly, the last two terms of these functions are (n/2)-order (or n-order) integrations of the MGF of the DP, evaluated at two carrier frequencies (or the difference between carrier frequencies), where n is the pathloss exponent of the environment

We treat the problem of outage minimization via power control in MIMO systems with quantized feedback. We formulate the optimal quantized power control design for a general MIMO system and provide the numerical procedure for finding the optimal solution. Our results not only extend but also show the deficiency of the existing quantized power control schemes for MISO systems. We further propose a design based on the pre-evaluation of the packet error rate performance of practical MIMO systems employing short-length LDPC codes and QAM modulations and with possibly unreliable feedback links. It is demonstrated that with only a few bits of feedback, the resulting quantized power control strategy achieves considerable gain over a system without power control.

The authors of the above titled paper (ibid., vol. 9, no. 8, pp. 2664-2675, Aug. 2010), have become aware that several of the equations in that paper were presented with errors. In this brief, we provide correct equations. The implementation of the model in the original paper was in accordance with the correct equations, so the implementation results presented in Section V. Performance Analysis are still valid.

The current literature on intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) focuses on optimizing the IRS phase shifts to yield coherent beamforming gains, under the assumption of perfect channel state information (CSI) of individual IRS-assisted links, which is highly impractical. This work, instead, considers the random rotations scheme at the IRS in which the reflecting elements only employ random phase rotations without requiring any CSI. The only CSI then needed is at the base station (BS) of the overall channel to implement the beamforming transmission scheme. Under this framework, we derive the sum-rate scaling laws in the large number of users regime for the IRS-assisted multiple-input single-output (MISO) broadcast channel, with optimal dirty paper coding (DPC) scheme and the lower-complexity random beamforming (RBF) and deterministic beamforming (DBF) schemes at the BS. The random rotations scheme increases the sum-rate by exploiting multi-user diversity, but also compromises the gain to some extent due to correlation. Finally, energy efficiency maximization problems in terms of the number of BS antennas, IRS elements and transmit power are solved using the derived scaling laws. Simulation results show the proposed scheme to improve the sum-rate, with performance becoming close to that under coherent beamforming for a large number of users., Accepted in IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications

In this paper, we revisit the fundamental problem of computing MIMO capacity under per-antenna power constraint (PAPC). Unlike the sum power constraint counterpart which likely admits water-filling-like solutions, MIMO capacity with PAPC has been largely studied under the framework of generic convex optimization. The two main shortcomings of these approaches are (i) their complexity scales quickly with the problem size, which is not appealing for large-scale antenna systems, and/or (ii) their convergence properties are sensitive to the problem data. As a starting point, we first consider a single user MIMO scenario and propose two provably-convergent iterative algorithms to find its capacity, the first method based on fixed-point iteration and the other based on alternating optimization and minimax duality. In particular, the two proposed methods can leverage the water-filling algorithm in each iteration and converge faster, compared to current methods. We then extend the proposed solutions to multi-user MIMO systems with dirty paper coding (DPC) based transmission strategies. In this regard, capacity regions of Gaussian broadcast channels with PAPC are also computed using closed-form expressions. Numerical results are provided to demonstrate the outperformance of the proposed solutions over existing approaches. A simple diamond half-duplex relay network composed of a source, two decode-and-forward half-duplex relays, and a destination is considered, where a direct link between the source and the destination does not exist. For this network, we study the case of buffer-aided relays, where the relays are equipped with buffers. Each relay can receive data from the source, store it in the buffer, and forward it to the destination, when the channel conditions are advantageous. Thereby, buffering enables adaptive scheduling of the transmissions and receptions over time, which allows the network to exploit the diversity offered by the fading channels. For the considered half-duplex network, four transmission modes are defined based on whether the relay nodes receive or transmit. In this paper, we derive the locally optimal scheduling of the transmission modes over time and investigate the achievable average rate, when the relays are affected by inter-relay interference. Since the proposed buffer-aided transmission policies introduce unbounded delay, we provide a sub-optimal buffer-aided transmission policy with limited delay. Moreover, for inter-relay interference cancellation, we consider two coding schemes with different complexities. In the first scheme, we employ dirty paper coding, which entails a high complexity, whereas in the second scheme, we adopt a low-complexity technique based on successive interference cancellation at the receiving relay nodes and optimal power allocation at the transmitting nodes. Our numerical results show that the proposed protocols, with and without delay constraints, outperform existing protocols for the considered network from the literature.

We consider the interference-mitigation based cognitive radio where the primary and secondary users can coexist at the same time and frequency bands, under the constraint that the rate of the primary user (PU) must remain the same with a single-user decoder. To meet such a coexistence constraint, the relaying from the secondary user (SU) can help the PU’s transmission under the interfere nce from the SU. However, the relayed signal in the known dirty paper coding (DPC) based scheme is interfered by the SU’s signal, and is not “clean”. In this paper, under the half-duplex constraints, we propose two new transmission schemes aided by the clean relaying from the SU’s transmitter and receiver without interference from th e SU. We name them as the clean transmitter relaying (CT) and clean transmitter-receiver relaying (CTR) aided cognitive radio, respectively. The rate and multiplexing gain performances of CT and CTR in fading channels with various availabilities of the channel state information at the transmitters (CSIT) are studied. Our CT generalizes the celebrated DPC based scheme proposed previously. With full CSIT, the multiplexing gain of the CTR is proved to be better (or no less) than that of the previous DPC based schemes. This is because the silent period for decoding the PU’s messages for the DPC may not be necessary in the CTR. With only the statistics of CSIT, we further prove that the CTR outperforms the rate performance of the previous scheme in fast Rayleigh fading channels. The numerical examples also show that in a large class of channels, the proposed CT and CTR provide significant rate ga ins over the previous scheme with small complexity penalties.

The objective of this paper is to study the impact of advanced physical layer techniques on the maximum achievable throughput of wireless multihop mesh networks. We formulate a cross-layer optimization framework for the routing and scheduling problem jointly with the following physical layer techniques: successive interference cancellation, superposition coding, dirty-paper coding and their combinations. In the case when each node is enabled with superposition coding, we need to formulate a power allocation subproblem for the optimal power partition of the superimposed signals. We solve these joint problems exactly to compute the maximum achievable throughput in realistic size networks. This allows us to quantify the performance gains obtained by using these techniques (and their combinations). Specifically, we find that the use of dirty-paper coding (only at the gateway) is not justified in networks with mixed uplink and downlink flows. On the other hand, the combination of superposition coding with successive interference outperforms significantly other techniques across all transmission power range for both uplink and downlink flows. We also provide a number of interesting practical insights on throughput improvement by comparing different combinations of these techniques.

Multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) systems are known to achieve superior data rates compared to single user (SU-MIMO) systems in the downlink. The achievable rates of MU-MIMO systems are dependent on the precoder design at the transmitter. Dirty paper coding (DPC) is a well known non-linear algorithm to achieve MIMO broadcast channel (BC) capacity. Zero forcing DPC (ZF-DPC) is a sub-optimal way to achieve DPC by triagularizing the channel. In a recent work, it was shown that ZF-DPC with receiver beamforming can provide further improvements. In this paper, we propose an enhancement of ZF-DPC with receiver processing by utilizing the MAC/BC duality. The proposed algorithm is iterative in nature which provides a useful trade-off between complexity and desired performance. Simulation results show that the proposed ZF-DPC algorithm achieves considerable improvement over conventional ZF-DPC and is within 1% of MIMO BC capacity.

Interference is a performance limiting factor in dense cellular networks with aggressive frequency reuse. Cooperation among base stations (BSs) is a promising approach for improving data rates by eliminating or mitigating interference. For the downlink, the highest spectral efficiency gains are achieved through precoding with full coordination, which requires complete channel state information (CSI) and data be shared among BSs at the cost of significant utilization of the backhaul. In this paper, we propose distributed precoding techniques for the multicell MIMO downlink. Unlike prior work, our proposed precoders are both decentralized with respect to the BSs as well as capable of enabling multiple users to share the same frequency carrier spatially within each cell. Specifically, each BS designs its own precoder without requiring data or downlink CSI of links from other BSs. Since CSI is unlikely to be perfect, we study the effect of imperfect CSI on our proposed precoders and propose a robust precoder in the presence of CSI uncertainty. Simulations show that our proposed methods enjoy a rate increase with SNR similar to multicell joint dirty paper coding in the high SNR regime due to effective interference mitigation. Numerical results reflect the sensitivity of each proposed precoder with respect to the imperfectness in the available CSI.

For two-hop amplify-and-forward (AF) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) relay systems, the uplink-downlink duality has been recently investigated. In this paper, we establish the duality between uplink and downlink multi-hop AF-MIMO relay channels with any number of hops and any number of antennas at each node, which is a further generalization of several previously established results. We show that in the downlink relay system, signal-to-interference-noise ratios (SINRs) identical to those in the uplink relay system, and vice versa, can be achieved by two approaches. First, with the same total network transmission power constraint, one simply applies Hermitian transposed uplink relay amplifying matrices at relay nodes in the downlink system. Second, with transmission power constraint at each node of the relay network, one can use scaled and Hermitian transposed uplink relay amplifying matrices in the downlink system, with scaling factors obtained by switching power constraints at different nodes of the uplink system. As an application of the uplink-downlink duality, we propose an optimal design of the source precoding matrix and relay amplifying matrices for multi-hop MIMO relay system with a dirty paper coding (DPC) transmitter at the source node.

In a conventional wireless cellular system, signal processing is performed on a per-cell basis; out-of-cell interference is treated as background noise. This paper considers the benefit of coordinating base-stations across multiple cells in a multi-antenna beamforming system, where multiple base-stations may jointly optimize their respective beamformers to improve the overall system performance. Consider a multicell downlink scenario where base-stations are equipped with multiple transmit antennas employing either linear beamforming or nonlinear dirty-paper coding, and where remote users are equipped with a single antenna each, but where multiple remote users may be active simultaneously in each cell. This paper focuses on the design criteria of minimizing either the total weighted transmitted power or the maximum per-antenna power across the base-stations subject to signal-to-interference-and-noise-ratio (SINR) constraints at the remote users. The main contribution of the paper is an efficient algorithm for finding the joint globally optimal beamformers across all base-stations. The proposed algorithm is based on a generalization of uplink-downlink duality to the multicell setting using the Lagrangian duality theory. An important feature is that it naturally leads to a distributed implementation in time-division duplex (TDD) systems. Simulation results suggest that coordinating the beamforming vectors alone already provide appreciable performance improvements as compared to the conventional per-cell optimized network.

This paper deals with protocol design for cognitive cooperative systems with many secondary users. In contrast with previous cognitive configurations, the channel model considered assumes a cluster of secondary users which perform both a sensing process for transmitting opportunities and can relay data for the primary user. Appropriate relaying improves the throughput of the primary users and can increase the transmission opportunities for the cognitive users. Based on different multi-access protocols, the schemes investigated enable relaying either between the primary user and a selected secondary user or between two selected secondary users. This collaboration can be a simple distributed multiple-input single-output transmission of the primary data or a simultaneous transmission of primary and secondary data using dirty-paper coding (DPC). The parametrization of DPC as well as its combination with opportunistic relay selection yields an interesting trade-off between the primary and the secondary performance which is investigated by theoretical and simulation results under the perspective of a desired primary throughput. The proposed protocols are studied from a networking point of view and the stable throughput for primary and secondary users is derived based on the principles of queueing theory.

Linear Relaying (LR) is the extension of amplify-and-forward to full-duplex operation, and consists of relay nodes transmitting (on every channel use) a linear combination of previously received signals. From a practical standpoint, it is one of the most profitable and easily deployed forwarding techniques, as only requires buffering and amplifying capabilities. In this paper, we propose to use it at multiple relays in order to enlarge the capacity region of single-antenna multiple-access (MAC) and broadcast channels (BC). Relays are assumed to be fixed, and without own data to transmit. The first part of our contribution is devoted to the MAC. Assuming channel awareness at the users and destination, the achievable rate region with LR is derived, and iterative algorithms are devised to compute the maximum sum-rate (SR) and weighted sum-rate (WSR). From both maximizations, the sources' temporal correlation to attain the boundary points of the region is obtained. In the second part, the BC with LR is studied. Its rate region, achievable through dirty paper coding, is shown to be equal to that of the MAC with a sum-power constraint. As a result, we demonstrate that MAC-BC duality holds. Making use of duality, iterative algorithms to compute the SR and WSR of the BC are presented.

The cognitive radio paradigm is based on the ability of sensing the radio environment in order to make informed decisions. This paper describes the effects of sensing on the cognitive radio channels capacity region. Sensing is modeled as a compression channel, which results in partial knowledge of the primary messages at the cognitive transmitter. This model enables to impose constraints on the sensing strategy. First, the dirty paper channel capacity is derived when the channel encoder knows partially the side information. Then, the capacity area of the Gaussian cognitive channel with partial information is derived. Finally, numerical results illustrate the capacity reduction associated with constrained sensing, in comparison to the capacity of the cognitive radio channel.

In recent years, the research on multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) broadcast channels has attracted much interest, especially since the discovery of the broadcast channel capacity achievable through the use of dirty paper coding (DPC). In this paper, we propose a new matrix decomposition, called the block diagonal geometric mean decomposition (BD-GMD), and develop transceiver designs that combine DPC with BD- GMD for MIMO broadcast channels. We also extend the BD- GMD to the block diagonal uniform channel decomposition (BD- UCD) with which the MIMO broadcast channel capacity can be achieved. Our proposed schemes decompose each user's MIMO channel into parallel subchannels with identical SNRs/SINRs, thus equal-rate coding can be applied across the subchannels of each user. Numerical simulations show that the proposed schemes demonstrate superior performance over conventional schemes.

In this paper, we consider the joint beamforming, power control and scheduling problem in a multiple-input single- output (MISO) downlink for maximizing the minimum weighted rate among all users. We solve this problem by formulating it as a convex optimization problem whose function evaluations require maximization of a difference of convex functions (D.C. Programming). We also propose a simpler heuristic that finds the best policy under restricted set of power vectors. We then compare the performance of these policies against the dirty paper coding (DPC) policy to quantify the performance gap between an optimal point-to-point coding approach and an optimal joint encoding/decoding approach.

The capacity and robustness of cellular MIMO systems is very sensitive to other-cell interference which will in practice necessitate network level interference reduction strategies. As an alternative to traditional static frequency reuse patterns, this paper investigates intercell scheduling among neighboring base stations. We show analytically that cooperatively scheduled transmission, which is well within the capability of present systems, can achieve an expanded multiuser diversity gain in terms of ergodic capacity as well as almost the same amount of interference reduction as conventional frequency reuse. This capacity gain over conventional frequency reuse is O (M t square-root of log Ns) for dirty paper coding and O (min (Mr, Mt) square-root of log Ns) for time division, where Ns is the number of cooperating base stations employing opportunistic scheduling in an M t x M r MIMO system. From a theoretical standpoint, an interesting aspect of this analysis comes from an altered view of multiuser diversity in the context of a multi-cell system. Previously, multiuser diversity capacity gain has been known to grow as O(log log K), from selecting the maximum of K exponentially-distributed powers. Because multicell considerations such as the positions of the users, lognormal shadowing, and pathless affect the multiuser diversity gain, we find instead that the gain is O(square-root of 2logic K), from selecting the maximum of a compound Iognormal-exponential distribution. Finding the maximum of such a distribution is an additional contribution of the paper.

The sum capacity of a Gaussian broadcast MIMO channel can be achieved with dirty paper coding (DPC). However, algorithms that approach the DPC sum capacity do not appear viable in the forseeable future, which motivates lower complexity interference suppression techniques. Block diagonalization (BD) is a linear preceding technique for downlink multiuser MIMO systems. With perfect channel knowledge at the transmitter, BD can eliminate other users' interference at each receiver. In this paper, we study the sum capacity of BD with and without receive antenna selection. We analytically compare BD without receive antenna selection to DPC for a set of given channels. It is shown that (1) if the user channels are orthogonal to each other, then BD achieves the same sum capacity as DPC; (2) if the user channels lie in the same subspace, then the gain of DPC over BD can be upper bounded by the minimum of the number of transmit and receive antennas. These observations also hold for BD with receive antenna selection. Further, we study the ergodic sum capacity of BD with and without receive antenna selection in a Rayleigh fading channel. Simulations show that BD can achieve a significant part of the total throughput of DPC. An upper bound on the ergodic sum capacity gain of DPC over BD is proposed for easy estimation of the gap between the sum capacity of DPC and BD without receive antenna selection.

We consider the downlink of a wireless cellular network where the base stations are equipped with multiple antennas and operate in the same frequency band. Since scheduling changes the spatial transmit signal processing with each time slot, information from neighboring base stations is required for data encoding. This can, in theory, be accomplished by a high-capacity backhaul network through which the base stations exchange channel state information (CSI) and other control signals. In reality, however, the temporal granularity of the scheduler does not allow for timely distribution of CSI among base stations. We propose a two-phase scheduler which optimizes the precoding in the first phase and allows the users to feed back their instantaneous interference power in the second phase. For the single-user case, we present a practical scheme that combines two-phase scheduling with precoders that maximize the signal-to-leakage-plus-noise ratio. If the users feed back the interference power together with a supported rate, communication between base stations can be limited to integers. By comparing the performance to multi-user two-phase scheduling with dirty paper coding and to algorithms that share CSI among base stations we show that two-phase scheduling is a technically and practically feasible solution to deal with non-stationary intercell interference.

We develop a realistic model for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) broadcast channels, where each randomly located user's average SNR depends on its distance from the transmitter. With perfect channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT), the average sum capacity is proven to scale for many users like αM/2 log K instead of M log log K, where α, M, and K denote the path loss exponent, the number of transmit antennas, and the number of users in a cell. With only partial CSIT, the sum capacity at high SNR eventually saturates due to interference, and the saturation value scales for large B like MB/M-1, where B denotes the quantization resolution for channel feedback.

In this paper, we consider the problem of power control for a wireless network with an arbitrarily time-varying topology, including the possible addition or removal of nodes. A data-driven design methodology that leverages graph neural networks (GNNs) is adopted in order to efficiently parametrize the power control policy mapping the channel state information (CSI) to transmit powers. The specific GNN architecture, known as random edge GNN (REGNN), defines a non-linear graph convolutional filter whose spatial weights are tied to the channel coefficients. While prior work assumed a joint training approach whereby the REGNN-based policy is shared across all topologies, this paper targets adaptation of the power control policy based on limited CSI data regarding the current topology. To this end, we propose a novel modular meta-learning technique that enables the efficient optimization of module assignment. While black-box meta-learning optimizes a general-purpose adaptation procedure via (stochastic) gradient descent, modular meta-learning finds a set of reusable modules that can form components of a solution for any new network topology. Numerical results validate the benefits of meta-learning for power control problems over joint training schemes, and demonstrate the advantages of modular meta-learning when data availability is extremely limited., Comment: Submitted for publication

This paper proposes a deep learning approach to channel sensing and downlink hybrid beamforming for massive multiple-input multiple-output systems operating in the time division duplex mode and employing either single-carrier or multicarrier transmission. The conventional precoding design involves a two-step process of first estimating the high-dimensional channel, then designing the precoders based on such estimate. This two-step process is, however, not necessarily optimal. This paper shows that by using a learning approach to design the analog sensing and the hybrid downlink precoders directly from the received pilots without the intermediate high-dimensional channel estimation, the overall system performance can be significantly improved. Training a neural network to design the analog and digital precoders simultaneously is, however, difficult. Further, such an approach is not generalizable to systems with different number of users. In this paper, we develop a simplified and generalizable approach that learns the uplink sensing matrix and downlink analog precoder using a deep neural network that decomposes on a per-user basis, then designs the digital precoder based on the estimated low-dimensional equivalent channel. Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) creates a platform to exploit the synergy between two powerful functionalities that have been developing separately. However, the interference management and resource allocation between sensing and communication have not been fully studied. In this paper, we consider the design of perceptive mobile networks (PMNs) by adding sensing capability to current cellular networks. To avoid the full-duplex operation, we propose the PMN with distributed target monitoring terminals (TMTs) where passive TMTs are deployed over wireless networks to locate the sensing target (ST). We jointly optimize the transmit and receive beamformers towards the communication user terminals (UEs) and the ST by alternating-optimization (AO) and prove its convergence. To reduce computation complexity and obtain physical insights, we further investigate the use of linear transceivers, including zero forcing and beam synthesis (B-syn). Our analysis revealed interesting physical insights regarding interference management and resource allocation between sensing and communication: 1) instead of forming dedicated sensing signals, it is more efficient to redesign the communication signals for both communication and sensing purposes and "leak" communication energy for sensing; 2) the amount of energy leakage from one UE to the ST depends on their relative locations., Comment: This paper has been submitted to the IEEE for possible publication

Cell-free massive MIMO systems have promising data rate and uniform coverage gains. These systems, however, typically rely on optical fiber based fronthaul for the communication between the central processing unit (CPU) and the distributed access points (APs), which increases the infrastructure cost, leads to high installation time, and limits the deployment flexibility and adaptability. To address these challenges, this paper proposes two architectures for cell-free massive MIMO systems based on wireless fronthaul that is operating at a \textit{higher-band} compared to the access links: (i) A wireless-only fronthaul architecture where the CPU has a wireless fronthaul link to each AP, and (ii) a mixed-fronthaul architecture where the CPU has a wireless link to each cluster of APs that are connected together via optical fibers. These dual-band architectures ensure high-data rate fronthaul and provide high capability to synchronize the distributed APs. Further, the wireless fronthaul reduces the infrastructure cost and installation time, and enhances the flexibility, adaptability, and scalability of the network deployment. To investigate the achievable data rates with the proposed architectures, we formulate the end-to-end data rate optimization problem accounting for the various practical aspects of the fronthaul and access links. Then, we develop a low-complexity yet efficient joint beamforming and resource allocation solution for the proposed architectures based on user-centric AP grouping. With this solution, we show that the proposed architectures can achieve comparable data rates to those obtained with optical fiber-based fronthaul under realistic assumptions on the fronthaul bandwidth, hardware constraints, and deployment scenarios. Device-edge co-inference opens up new possibilities for resource-constrained wireless devices (WDs) to execute deep neural network (DNN)-based applications with heavy computation workloads. In particular, the WD executes the first few layers of the DNN and sends the intermediate features to the edge server that processes the remaining layers of the DNN. By adapting the model splitting decision, there exists a tradeoff between local computation cost and communication overhead. In practice, the DNN model is re-trained and updated periodically at the edge server. Once the DNN parameters are regenerated, part of the updated model must be placed at the WD to facilitate on-device inference. In this paper, we study the joint optimization of the model placement and online model splitting decisions to minimize the energy-and-time cost of device-edge co-inference in presence of wireless channel fading. The problem is challenging because the model placement and model splitting decisions are strongly coupled, while involving two different time scales. We first tackle online model splitting by formulating an optimal stopping problem, where the finite horizon of the problem is determined by the model placement decision. In addition to deriving the optimal model splitting rule based on backward induction, we further investigate a simple one-stage look-ahead rule, for which we are able to obtain analytical expressions of the model splitting decision. The analysis is useful for us to efficiently optimize the model placement decision in a larger time scale. In particular, we obtain a closed-form model placement solution for the fully-connected multilayer perceptron with equal neurons. This paper studies intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-aided full-duplex (FD) wireless-powered communication network (WPCN), where a hybrid access point (HAP) broadcasts energy signals to multiple devices for their energy harvesting in the downlink (DL) and meanwhile receives information signals in the uplink (UL) with the help of IRS. Particularly, we propose three types of IRS beamforming configurations to strike a balance between the system performance and signaling overhead as well as implementation complexity. We first propose the fully dynamic IRS beamforming, where the IRS phase-shift vectors vary with each time slot for both DL wireless energy transfer (WET) and UL wireless information transmission (WIT). To further reduce signaling overhead and implementation complexity, we then study two special cases, namely, partially dynamic IRS beamforming and static IRS beamforming. For the former case, two different phase-shift vectors can be exploited for the DL WET and the UL WIT, respectively, whereas for the latter case, the same phase-shift vector needs to be applied for both DL and UL transmissions. We aim to maximize the system throughput by jointly optimizing the time allocation, HAP transmit power, and IRS phase shifts for the above three cases. Two efficient algorithms based on alternating optimization and penalty-based algorithms are respectively proposed for both perfect self-interference cancellation (SIC) case and imperfect SIC case by applying successive convex approximation and difference-of-convex optimization techniques. Simulation results demonstrate the benefits of IRS for enhancing the performance of FD-WPCN, and also show that the IRS-aided FD-WPCN is able to achieve significantly performance gain compared to its counterpart with half-duplex when the self-interference (SI) is properly suppressed., This paper submitted to the IEEE journal is under minor revsions for possible publication

Internet-of-Things (IoT) is being widely embraced with the number of connected devices growing rapidly. Moreover, IoT applications are emerging in diverse verticals such as connected cars, connected factories, and smart agriculture. For new business models, in order to meet key network performance indicators, connectivity must be flexible and agile. An integrated satellite-aerial-terrestrial network (I-SAT) has recently stimulated interest in providing wireless communication due to its high maneuverability, versatile deployment, and pervasive connectivity. The resource planning, task distribution, and action management of an I-SAT can be accomplished through effective acquisition, coordination, transmission, and aggregation of diverse information. This paper considers an I-SAT network, in which multiple unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) with aerial stations and a terrestrial base station (BS), in a cognitive setting, in the presence of satellite-receiver communication, are deployed to support smart vehicles on the ground. By taking into account different limitations and Quality of Service (QoS) constraints, the goal is to maximize the average throughput among users by jointly optimizing user association, BS/UAV transmission power, and UAV trajectory. The formulated problem is a non-convex optimization problem with a complicated expression that is hard to solve. To tackle this problem, an alternating iterative algorithm based on the block descent method is proposed. Precisely, the problem is subdivided into three subproblems, transmitter-vehicle association optimization, BS/UAV power allocation optimization, and UAV trajectory control. Then, in an iterative process, these subproblems are solved sequentially. The proposed solution uses a segment-by-segment technique, which breaks the complete UAV flight trajectory into smaller time segments to reduce computation time when the network service period is considerable. As a result, each time segment’s optimization can be solved more quickly. Furthermore, the paper presents the results of network simulations carried out to assess the efficiency of the proposed solution. The findings show that the presented scheme outperforms different benchmark schemes in terms of the average user throughput when observing multiple different scenarios.

This paper proposes a new transmission policy for intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) empowered wireless powered internet of things systems. Particularly, an energy station (ES) wirelessly charges for multiple IoT devices during downlink wireless energy transfer (WET) and then these devices deliver their own message to an access point (AP) during uplink wireless information transfer (WIT). Also, an IRS is deployed to improve energy harvesting and data transmission capabilities. To enhance self-sustainability of the IRS, the IRS harvests energy from the ES based on the harvest-then-transmit protocol. In this paper, we maximize the sum throughput via optimizing the phase shifts of the IRS, the transfer time scheduling as well as the power splitting ratio. Due to the non-convexity of the formulated problem, we divide the problem into two sub-problems, each of which can be handled separately. Then, we adopt an alternating optimization (AO) algorithm with the semidefinite programming (SDP) relaxation. Also, we consider a special case where the circuit power consumption of IoT devices can be neglected. In this case, we derive a closed form solution for the optimal transmission time slots, power allocation and phase shift by the Lagrange dual method. Finally, numerical evaluations validate effectiveness of the proposed scheme, which significantly benefits from the IRS in improving network throughput.

Massive Multi-Input Multi-Output (MIMO) and Coordinated MultiPoint (CoMP) technologies in Cloud-RAN (C-RAN) architecture become inevitable trend due to the advent of next-generation mobile applications, which are traffic-intensive, such as ultra high definition (UHD) video. In this paper, we study a joint beam activation and user scheduling problem in a 5G cellular network with massive MIMO and CoMP utilizing orthogonal random beamforming technique. This paper aims to minimize total Remote Radio Heads’ (RRHs’) energy expenditure in a dynamic C-RAN architecture while ensuring finite service time for all user traffic arrivals in the communication coverage. We leverage Lyapunov drift-plus-penalty framework to transform an original long-term average problem into a series of per-slot modified problems. Since the provided per-slot problem is combinatorial and nonlinear optimization problem, we are inspired by a greedy algorithm to design energy and delay guaranteed joint beam activation and user scheduling policy, namely BEANS. We prove that the proposed BEANS ensures finite upper bounds of average RRH energy consumption and average queue backlogs for all traffic arrival rates within constant ratio of capacity region and all energy-delay tradeoff parameters. These proofs are the first attempt to theoretically demonstrate guarantees of energy and queue bounds in a framework consisting of possibly negative submodular objective function and non-matriod constraints. Finally, via extensive simulations, we compare the capacity region and energy-queue backlog tradeoff of BEANS with optimal and existing algorithms, and show that BEANS attains up to 65% of energy saving for the same average queue backlog compared to the algorithms which do not take traffic dynamics and energy consumption into considerations.

In this paper, we investigate a satellite-aerial integrated edge computing network (SAIECN) to combine a low-earth-orbit (LEO) satellite and aerial high altitude platforms (HAPs) to provide edge computing services for ground user equipment (GUE). In the SAIECN, GUE’s computing tasks can be offloaded to HAP(s) or LEO satellite. In this paper, we minimize the weighted sum energy consumption of SAIECN via joint GUE association, multi-user multiple input and multiple output (MU-MIMO) transmit precoding, computation task assignment, and resource allocation. To solve the nonconvex problem, we decompose the optimization problem into four subproblems and solve each one iteratively. For the GUE association subproblem, quadratic transform based fractional programming (QTFP) and difference of convex function are utilized. The MU-MIMO transmit precoding subproblem is solved via QTFP and the weighted minimum mean-squared method. The computation task assignment is addressed using the classic interior point method while the computation resource allocation is derived in closed form. The numerical results show that the proposed SAIECN and the corresponding algorithm can solve the satellite based edge computing quite well and the energy cost is maintained at a relative low level.

This paper investigates a joint resource allocation for ultra-reliable and low-latency radio access networks (URLLRANs) with edge computing. Compared with conventional networks, URLLRANs have more restrictive latency and reliability requirements, and always feature short packet communications. It is a challenging work to provide edge computing services in URLLRANs, since the processing and transmission delay as well as packet loss during computation and communications should all be taken into considerations. Along these lines, to specify the trade-off between latency and reliability, this paper defines computation rates and transmission rates for short packets. Different from the existing work, the proposal takes effective information as well as energy consumption as performance metrics based on the definition. The packet request rates, computation latency, service rates, communication power, blocklength, and transmission information amounts are jointly optimized to reduce energy consumption and meanwhile generate more effective information for both the computation system and the communication system. To solve the NP-hard problem, the locally optimal solution and global optimal solution are both derived. Simulation results validate the performance advantage of the proposal and also indicate that the locally optimal solution can greatly reduce the computation complexity with only a small performance loss when compared with the global optimal solution.

Opportunistic computation offloading is an effective method to improve the computation performance of mobile-edge computing (MEC) networks under dynamic edge environment. In this paper, we consider a multi-user MEC network with time-varying wireless channels and stochastic user task data arrivals in sequential time frames. In particular, we aim to design an online computation offloading algorithm to maximize the network data processing capability subject to the long-term data queue stability and average power constraints. The online algorithm is practical in the sense that the decisions for each time frame are made without the assumption of knowing future channel conditions and data arrivals. We formulate the problem as a multi-stage stochastic mixed integer non-linear programming (MINLP) problem that jointly determines the binary offloading (each user computes the task either locally or at the edge server) and system resource allocation decisions in sequential time frames. To address the coupling in the decisions of different time frames, we propose a novel framework, named LyDROO, that combines the advantages of Lyapunov optimization and deep reinforcement learning (DRL). Specifically, LyDROO first applies Lyapunov optimization to decouple the multi-stage stochastic MINLP into deterministic per-frame MINLP subproblems. By doing so, it guarantees to satisfy all the long-term constraints by solving the per-frame subproblems that are much smaller in size. Then, LyDROO integrates model-based optimization and model-free DRL to solve the per-frame MINLP problems with low computational complexity. Simulation results show that under various network setups, the proposed LyDROO achieves optimal computation performance while stabilizing all queues in the system. The reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), which consists of a large number of passive and low-cost reflecting elements, has been recognized as a revolutionary technology to enhance the performance of future wireless networks. This paper considers an RIS assisted multicast transmission, where a base station (BS) with multiple-antenna multicasts common message to multiple single-antenna mobile users (MUs) under the assistance of an RIS. An equivalent channel model for the considered multicast transmission is analyzed, and then an optimization problem for the corresponding channel capacity is formulated to obtain the optimal covariance matrix and phase shifts. In order to solve the above non-convex and non-differentiable problem, this paper first exploits the gradient descent method and alternating optimization, to approach the locally optimal solution for any number of MUs. Then, this paper considers a special case, which can obtain the global optimal solution, and shows the sufficient and necessary condition for this special case. Finally, the order growth of the maximal capacity is obtained when the numbers of the reflecting elements, the BS antennas, and the MUs go to infinity.

In this paper, the problem of Quality-of-Service (QoS) differentiation is studied in the context of Buffer-Aided (BA) cooperative Free Space Optical (FSO) communication systems. This is particularly true since the existing relevant literature overlooked the possibility of preferential treatment of data packets based on their delay requirements. Inspired by this observation, this paper proposes to classify the data packets emanating from the source node into either Delay Tolerant (DT) packets or Non Delay Tolerant (NDT) ones and to service these packets according to this classification at the relay node. Priority queueing is first introduced in the relay’s buffer with a view to improving the delay experienced by NDT packets. Class of service mutation is then proposed as a starvation mitigation strategy to better manage the interesting dynamics resulting from the co-existence of packets having different QoS requirements in the same buffer. The various performance measures of interest for the explored QoS-aware communication system are both evaluated mathematically based on a Markov chain analysis and validated through extensive simulations. An asymptotic analysis is also carried out highlighting the dependence of the performance on the system parameters in an intuitive manner.

This paper focuses on a novel orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) receiver architecture, which uses a low-resolution analog-to-digital converter (ADC) to oversample the received signal in time domain. Although attractive in terms of power consumption and hardware cost, low-resolution ADC incurs severe nonlinear quantization distortion and thus destroys the orthogonality between the OFDM subcarriers. The loss of orthogonality, together with the oversampling-caused correlation in noise samples, poses a great challenge to the OFDM receiver design. This paper aims to tackle this challenge. For the proposed receiver, we consider an often-used two-phase transmission protocol. In the first phase, training OFDM symbols are transmitted for channel estimation. In the second phase, information-conveying OFDM symbols are transmitted and detected using the previously obtained channel estimate. Therefore, the proposed receiver consists of two key components: channel estimator and data detector. These components are elaborately derived in the framework of Bayesian inference. Due to the diversity gain resulting from the oversampling operation, the proposed receiver can remarkably outperform the counterparts, including the conventional OFDM receiver with perfect infinite-precision quantization.

This paper considers Gaussian half-duplex diamond $n$ -relay networks, where a source communicates with a destination by hopping information through one layer of $n$ non-communicating relays that operate in half-duplex. The main focus consists of investigating the following question: What is the contribution of a single relay on the approximate capacity of the entire network? In particular, approximate capacity refers to a quantity that approximates the Shannon capacity within an additive gap which only depends on $n$ , and is independent of the channel parameters. This paper answers the above question by providing a fundamental bound on the ratio between the approximate capacity of the highest-performing single relay and the approximate capacity of the entire network, for any number $n$ . Surprisingly, it is shown that such a ratio guarantee is $f = 1/(2+2\cos (2\pi /(n+2)))$ , that is a sinusoidal function of $n$ , which decreases as $n$ increases. It is also shown that the aforementioned ratio guarantee is tight , i.e., there exist Gaussian half-duplex diamond $n$ -relay networks, where the highest-performing relay has an approximate capacity equal to an $f$ fraction of the approximate capacity of the entire network.

International audience; Massive machine-type communications (mMTC) is one of the main services delivered by the fifth Generation (5G) mobile network. The traditional cellular architecture where all devices connect to the base station is not energy efficient. For this reason, the use of device-to-device (D2D) communications is considered to reduce the energy consumption of mMTC devices. The main idea is to use nearby user equipment (UE) as a relay and establish with it D2D communication. However, the relay selection process also consumes energy, and this consumption can be significant compared to the energy consumed during the data transmission phase. In this paper, we propose a distributed energy-efficient D2D relaying mechanism for mMTC applications. This mechanism favors the selection of the UEs with low path loss with the mMTC device. Through mathematical analysis and simulations, we show that our mechanism allows a reduction of the total energy consumption of mMTC devices (up to 75% compared to direct transmission) when they have an unfavorable link budget. Moreover, our mechanism achieves almost constant energy consumption for a large range of UE densities and distances between the mMTC device and the base station.
