As more and more people choose high-speed rail (HSR) as a means of transportation for short trips, there is ever growing demand of high quality of multimedia services. With its rich spectrum resources, millimeter wave (mm-wave) communications can satisfy the high network capacity requirements for HSR. Also, it is possible for receivers (RXs) to be equipped with antenna arrays in mm-wave communication systems due to its short wavelength. However, as HSRs run with high speed, the received signal power (RSP) varies rapidly over a cell and it is the lowest at the edge of the cell compared to other locations. Consequently, it is necessary to conduct research on RX beamforming for HSR in mm-wave band to improve the quality of the received signal. In this paper, we focus on RX beamforming for a mm-wave train-ground communication system. To improve the RSP, we propose an effective RX beamforming scheme based on deep reinforcement learning (DRL), and develop a deep Q-network (DQN) algorithm to train and determine the optimal RX beam direction with the purpose of maximizing average RSP. Through extensive simulations, we demonstrate that the proposed scheme has better performance than the four baseline schemes in terms of average RSP at most positions on the railway. The performance of the recently proposed orientational beamforming (OBF) system for ultra-wideband (UWB) signals degrades seriously in multiuser situation. Although various techniques have been proposed in the literature to suppress multiuser interference in the time-hopping UWB system, there has been no research on interference suppression in the OBF UWB system. In this paper, we propose a nonlinear OBF system via a modified radial basis function (RBF) neural network, named the RBF-OBF system, to reject orientational UWB interferences caused by multiuser transmission in the OBF system. The RBF neural network is selected mainly because of its simple structure, convenient training process, and fast convergence speed. However, the conventional Euclidean-distance-based RBF neural network is not suitable for the training process used in this work, as the training samples are noiseless orientational steering vectors in frequency domain. Therefore, a modified RBF neural network is proposed in this paper, which evaluates the similarity between an input vector and the center vector of a hidden layer neuron by their signed complex correlation coefficient. Numerous simulations demonstrate that compared to the conventional OBF system, the proposed RBF-OBF system can significantly reduce the bit error rates (BERs) under different noise and interference situations. This study is motivated by the fact that localization in millimeter wave(mmWave) Vehicle-to-Vehicle communication becomes a more critical problem because both the terminals of the communication link are in motion. The positional awareness merely based on GPS or local sensors has an error margin of around 10 meters, which can worsen in uncertain real-time conditions such as road topology and highway traffic. The paper analyses the relation between vehicle dynamics, beamforming, and beam alignment for highly directive antennas. When the subsystem models presented in this paper are taken into consideration, the joint vehicle dynamics-beamforming approach will optimize the link connectivity and SNR. The vehicle dynamics model is designed to be more realistic considering the non-linear acceleration based on the throttle-brake jerks due to induced noises. The Unscented Kalman Filter based prediction subsystem predicts the alignment values even during non-linear acceleration and jerks. As the number of antennas increases, the massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system can precisely point to user equipments (UEs) with narrow beams. Accurate and timely channel state information (CSI) feedback is crucial to keep UEs in service. Mobile UEs, however, may suffer from the narrow beam nature of the massive MIMO system since UEs can move out of the beam coverage. When intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is applied to the massive MIMO system, the adjustment of the IRS cannot be frequent as the IRS is controlled remotely by the base station (BS). Limiting the number of CSI feedback and the number of both BS and IRS adjustments significantly reduces the overhead of transmission and computation to the system. In this paper, we consider the UEs’ mobility adaptation problem in an IRS assisted multiuser massive MIMO downlink system with infrequent CSI feedback. We propose a beam control method that adapts to UEs’ mobility. The problem is constructed as a sum rate problem where both the BS and IRS are taken into account to jointly optimize the beamforming matrices. Simulation results show that our proposed algorithm can converge quickly and provide satisfactory performance for mobile UEs. In this paper, we study the multiuser detection in a millimeter-wave (mm-wave) wireless communication system using hybrid beamformers, where uplink transmissions are considered under limited scattering. For a base station, with the condition that the number of radio-frequency (RF) chains is relatively smaller than that of users, we consider opportunistic beamforming with analog beams for multiple-signal detection and derive a closed form expression for system sum rate. By applying the minimum mean square error (MMSE)-filter with the proposed opportunistic hybrid beamforming algorithm, the system performance can be further improved. Through simulation results, it is shown that the proposed MMSE-based multiuser detection approaches are attractive for hybrid mm-wave systems to support a large number of users with a small number of RF chains. This paper studies the electronically steerable parasitic array radiator (ESPAR) antenna as a solution for beam pattern switching to implement blind interference alignment (BIA). The ESPAR antenna uses a single radio-frequency (RF) chain, and its beamforming is achieved by simply tuning the reactance loads of parasitic elements. Furthermore, ESPAR's beam pattern can be designed to enhance the received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), thereby improving the performance of BIA. The focus of this work is the design of the ESPAR beam pattern to realize and improve BIA. In the first approach, each receiver ESPAR antenna dynamically selects the proper beam patterns from among the sector beam patterns, which are pre-designed to access different angular sectors with constant optimal antenna efficiency. We also propose a singular value decomposition (SVD) beamforming method, by means of the available channel state information at the receiver and a dynamic matching network for a high antenna efficiency. A zero forcing (ZF) assisted single layer beamforming is developed for spatial modulation (SM) and space shift keying (SSK) modulation multiple input multiple output (MIMO) systems, termed as SZF-SM/SZF-SSK, to achieve both transmit beamforming and receive diversity gain in this paper. Specifically, the proposed SZF-SM/SZF-SSK maps part of the bits to spatial domain, simultaneously forming a ZF precoding assisted single layer data both in multiple input single output (MISO) and MIMO systems, that differs greatly from conventional ZF beamforming assisted MIMO systems. With MISO configuration, the ZF precoder of SZF-SM/SZF-SSK converges to the maximum ratio transmission (MRT), achieving only the transmit beamforming gain. With MIMO configuration, SZF-SM/SZF-SSK tranceiver could be further modified along with the MIMO channel to achieve single layer transmission and joint detection, attaining both the transmit beamforming and receive diversity gain in SM-MIMO system. The theoretical analysis and the simulation results of the proposed SZF-SM/SZF-SSK with MISO and MIMO configurations are presented in this paper respectively, which show an attractive performance gain over the conventional SM/SSK. Compared with the conventional ZF beamforming assisted MIMO systems and some other CSI assisted SM-MIMO schemes, the proposed scheme exhibits better performance, especially under highly correlated MIMO channels, rendering a new and practical way to achieve low rank MIMO transmission with good performance and high data rate. In this paper, we present unified performance analysis framework of distributed transmit beamforming (DTB) with residual phase errors which arise from various sources such as imperfect synchronization and channel feedback quantization. More specifically, we derive statistics of the receive signal-to-noise ratio of DTB in Rayleigh and Rician fading channels in the presence of residual phase errors. In the case of residual phase errors caused by channel feedback quantization, we show that the distribution of residual phase errors can be modeled by uniform distribution in Rayleigh fading channels and Gaussian distribution in Rician fading channels. Also, our results reveal that a small number of bits are sufficient for quantized feedback to achieve comparable performance to DTB with perfect channel feedback. This paper investigates a heterogeneous cellular network (HCN) topology, where multiple sub-6 GHz bands are available for access and device-to-device (D2D) links with the full-duplex (FD) mode, and an integrated millimeter-wave (mm-wave) band is added to the D2D links’ sub-channel resource options. D2D links share spectrum resources of cellular users or dedicated mm-wave sub-channel. Densely deployed small cells scenario provides an ideal platform to implement mm-wave, FD and D2D communications. With large bandwidths available, mm-wave has the potential to meet the expected extreme data rate demands. Leveraging highly directional beamforming, severe transmission loss and the blockage phenomenon of mm-wave can be alleviated. Theoretically, FD communications can double the spectral efficiency due to bi-directional communications with the same spectral and temporal resources. However, such benefit comes at the cost of residual self-interference (RSI). Multi-user interference (MUI) and RSI among network uplink, downlink and D2D links are the main challenges. In the paper, we formulate an optimization problem for FD access and D2D links sub-channel allocation underlaying HCNs combining sub-6 GHz and mm-wave bands to make the system transmission rate maximized. Then, a scheme based on the coalition formation game is proposed to deal with this challenging NP-complete optimization. This paper studies a cognitive radio network (CRN), in which a multiple-input single-output (MISO) secondary transmitter (SU-Tx) aims to send confidential messages to its receiver (SU-Rx) in the presence of unknown eavesdroppers, while having to control its generated interference to the primary users (PUs) under a given threshold. Because the eavesdroppers are unknown, this paper considers the artificial noise (AN) approach or masked beamforming to provide the information secrecy. The objective of this paper is to maximize the power of AN in order to degrade the eavesdroppers, subject to the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) constraint at the SU-Rx, as well as the interference temperature limits (ITLs) for the PUs. In the case of perfect channel state information (CSI), we reveal that the optimal strategy for the information-bearing signal is beamforming. Imperfect CSI cases of bounded and stochastic uncertainties are investigated. In the case of ellipsoid-bounded errors, we derive the equivalent forms for the SINR and ITL constraints and then transform the optimization problem into a form of semidefinite programming (SDP). For the case of probabilistic CSI uncertainties, we propose an outage-constrained robust formulation where the CSI errors are Gaussian distributed. This paper proposes a method of implementing analog eigenmode transmission for a short-range multiple-input–multiple-output (SR-MIMO) system that uses only 180° hybrid couplers. If the short-range MIMO system places transmitting and receiving arrays in line-of-sight (LOS) and symmetrically with respect to specific reference planes, the channel matrix in the system also becomes symmetrical. This allows the channel matrix to be diagonalized by connecting 180° hybrid couplers to both ports at the transmitter and receiver sides, i.e., eigenmode transmission can be realized. In this paper, first, the theory of the proposed technique is explained by taking a 2 $\times$ 2 MIMO as an example, based on the characteristics of 180° hybrid coupler and the theory of the cascade-connected network. Moreover, an extension to the method that offers 4 $\times$ 4 MIMO is also proposed. This paper clarifies that this proposed technique can diagonalize the channel matrix, regardless of array configuration, such as type of antennas and antenna spacing, as long as the symmetry of the system configuration is assured. Furthermore, numerical results verify that the distance between the transmitter and the receiver has no effect on channel orthogonality. As a result, this technique partially avoids the performance degradation caused by array displacement, which is a major disadvantage of the conventional analog-beamforming-based decoding technique for short-range MIMO systems. This paper analyzes the performance of a clustered small cell network, where the base stations (BSs) are equipped with multiple antennas and the network topology is modeled as Matern cluster process (MCP). For such a clustered multi-antenna network, serious intra-cluster interference is a main bottleneck of the system performance. Utilizing the intra-cluster coordinated beamforming scheme is an effective approach for the intra-cluster interference cancellation. From this, we firstly derive an approximate expression for the users’ average data rate based on stochastic geometry, and then we discuss the optimal number of the maximum degrees of freedom (DoF) used for coordinated beamforming at the BS, which maximize the average data rate. Simulation results confirm the accuracy of our derivations and also present the performance with the intra-cluster interference cancellation is much better than that with no intra-cluster interference cancellation. Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) spatial multiplexing and beamforming are regarded as key technology enablers for the fifth-generation (5G) millimeter wave (mmWave) mobile radio services. Spatial multiplexing requires sufficiently separated and incoherent antenna array elements, while in the case of beamforming, the antenna array elements need to be coherent and closely spaced. Extensive 28-, 60-, and 73-GHz ultra-wideband propagation measurements in cities of New York City and Austin have indicated formation of two or more spatial lobes for the angles-of-departure and angles-of-arrival even for line-of-sight (LOS) transmission, which is an advantageous feature of mmWave channels, indicating that the transmitting and receiving array antenna elements can be co-located, thus enabling a single architecture for both spatial multiplexing and beamforming. In this paper, a two-level beamforming architecture for uniform linear arrays is proposed that leverages the formation of these spatial lobes. The antenna array is composed of sub-arrays, and the impact of sub-array spacing on the spectral efficiency is investigated through simulations using a channel simulator named NYUSIM developed based on extensive measured data at mmWave frequencies. Simulation results indicate spectral efficiencies of 18.5–28.1 bits/s/Hz with a sub-array spacing of 16 wavelengths for an outdoor mmWave urban LOS channel. The spectral efficiencies obtained are for single-user (SU) MIMO transmission at the recently allocated 5G carrier frequencies in July 2016. This paper investigates distributed beamforming networks composed of multiple groups of transmitters where each group consists of two transmitters. The goal is to jointly optimize the phase components at the transmitters and the orientation angles of the groups that maximize the radiated energy over an angular sector containing an adversary while placing a null towards the client in order not to obfuscate the client. Since the optimization problem is non-convex, it is intractable to obtain the optimal solution in closed-form. To this end, we propose a non-iterative closed-form solution by adopting a group-wise nullforming approach where each group independently creates a null to the client. In this paper, we investigate hybrid beamforming, user scheduling, and resource allocation optimization based on spectrum coexisting forward transmission in integrated terrestrial-satellite network (ITSN) with the purpose of improving system sum rate and energy efficiency. Considering the limitation of on-board beamforming, a hybrid analog-digital beamforming scheme is designed under the scenario of millimeter wave (mmWave) coexisting in the ITSN framework. Besides, in order to further mitigate intra-beam and inter-beam interference, we propose an adaptive user scheduling scheme, which first determines the cluster center based on adaptive threshold, and then selects users with less channel correlation into a scheduling cluster. Moreover, we model system sum rate maximization problem that incorporates maximum power constrains and minimum data rate requirements. Combined with the aforementioned hybrid beamforming and user scheduling strategy, we formulate the sum rate maximizing problem to a pure power allocation issue. In view of the non-convexity and high complexity, we propose a feasible optimization method based on the minimum mean square error (MMSE) criterion and logarithmic linearization to optimize the power allocation for each user terminal (UT). Simulation results show that our proposed joint beamforming and resource allocation optimization scheduling scheme can achieve an attractive gain in system sum rate and energy efficiency compared with conservative beamforming and allocations. In this paper, we consider nonregenerative multipair two-way relaying systems, where a relay node supports $K$ pairs of two-way communications in the presence of imperfect channel state information (CSI). We employ a stochastic approach to model the channel uncertainties and study a robust beamforming design at the relay. It is shown that the proposed beamformer provides a reduction in the computational complexity, as well as good robustness against channel errors, compared with conventional designs. To reduce the estimation overhead at the users, we also suggest an efficient downlink training method to inform the users of the channel-dependent self-interference cancellation (SIC) parameters. With the training method, the additive noise may incur a malfunction of the SIC. To address this issue, we develop an intelligent selection criterion that decides whether the SIC should be adopted or not. Hybrid precoding is used in millimeter wave (mmWave) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems instead of full digital precoding to reduce the cost and power consumption. Conventional hybrid precoding however requires complex channel estimation before beamforming. In this paper, we propose a low complexity low-cost channel estimation-free deep direct beamforming method composed of two basic steps-beam impulse and beamforming for time division duplex (TDD). This method is built upon randomized singular value decomposition (RSVD) and can directly complete the process of beamforming. Furthermore, a realistic dataset of mmWave channel-DeepMIMO is adopted to evaluate and determine the practicability of this method. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed deep direct beamforming achieves high performance while its complexity and power consumption are very low. Compared with other methods without perfect channel status information (CSI), the proposed method costs less and requires lower computational resources while achieves higher spectral efficiency. In this paper, we study the joint cooperative beamforming and user association scheme for multi-cell multi-user full-dimension massive multiple-input multiple-out (MIMO) networks, where each user equipment is dynamically associated with one of the base stations. We propose to maximize the network capacity by jointly optimizing the beamforming vectors and a binary vector that represents the user association decisions. The binary vectors are further transformed into binary beam association factors (BAFs) as indicators of both the beamforming and the user association decisions. A three-step Gaussian belief propagation (GaBP) based distributed solver is proposed to solve the non-convex NP-hard problem considered in this paper. By relaxing the binary BAFs, we first transform the optimization problem into a linear programming. Subsequently, GaBP is used to efficiently obtain a feasible solution on BAFs in parallel, and two mapping algorithms are proposed to achieve different performance-complexity tradeoffs. Simulation results show that the proposed cooperative beamforming methods significantly outperform the benchmarks in the literature in terms of the network capacity with a low computation complexity. This paper proposes a robust beamforming (BF) scheme to enhance the physical layer security (PLS) of a multibeam satellite system operating at Ka band. By considering the effects of beam gain, path loss, and rain attenuation, we first formulate a constrained optimization problem to maximize the minimal achievable secrecy rate of multiuser under the assumption of imperfect eavesdropping channel and the constraint of total transmit power on the satellite. Since the problem is non-convex and mathematically intractable, we exploit the sequential convex approximation approach and S-procedure method to transform the original problem into one with a series of linear matrix inequality and second-order cone constraints, and then propose an iterative scheme to obtain the optimal BF weight vectors. This correspondence paper considers a multiple-input single-output non-orthogonal multiple access (MISO-NOMA) system that spatially multiplexes NOMA signals formed by superimposing two user symbols in the power domain. We aim to design practical beamforming (BF), power allocation (PA), and user clustering methods for the system by minimizing the transmit power under the rate constraints. The two-step BF and conditionally optimal PA are devised in closed-form expressions that facilitate user clustering based on message passing and effective channel correlation. Beamforming has a great potential for joint communication and radar sensing (JCAS), which is becoming a demanding feature on many emerging platforms, such as unmanned aerial vehicles and smart cars. Although beamforming has been extensively studied for communication and radar sensing respectively, its application in the joint system is not straightforward due to different beamforming requirements by communication and sensing. In this paper, we propose a novel multibeam framework using steerable analog antenna arrays, which allows seamless integration of communication and sensing. Different to conventional JCAS schemes that support JCAS using a single beam, our framework is based on the key innovation of multibeam technology: providing fixed subbeam for communication and packet-varying scanning subbeam for sensing, simultaneously from a single transmitting array. We provide a system architecture and protocols for the proposed framework, complying well with modern packet communication systems with multicarrier modulation. We also propose low-complexity and effective multibeam design and generation methods, which offer great flexibility in meeting different communication and sensing requirements. We further develop sensing parameter estimation algorithms using conventional digital Fourier transform and one-dimensional compressive sensing techniques, matching well with the multibeam framework. To promote the massive video content delivery and to realize the long-term overall cost, the caching and computing functions have to be installed at some intermediate nodes within the networks. This paper presents a cache-aware multicast beamforming design for multicell multigroup multicast, where information-centric networking and mobile edge computing techniques are brought in the multicell multicast system to cache and transcode the contents passing through the nodes. The proposed cache-aware multicast beamforming design jointly optimizes the multicast mode, the caching strategy, and the network-wide beamforming vector, and focuses on minimizing the energy cost of the caching, computing, and communications. To make the formulated problem tractable, a two step method is proposed in this paper, where the first step is devoted to the cache-aware multicast approach design, while the second step is focused on the sparse multicast beamforming design. Furthermore, in order to promote the stabilization of the system, we further design a robust joint optimization strategy for the scenario with the imperfect channel state information. In this paper, for a two-way relay channel comprising two multi-antenna transceivers and $L$ single-antenna potential relay nodes, we propose three network-coded cooperative spatial multiplexing (CSM) schemes that effectively overcome the rate loss incurred due to the half-duplex limitation of the transceivers and the relay nodes and achieve high spectral efficiency. In the following, these three schemes are referred to astime-division broadcast (TDBC)-CSM,incremental (I)-TDBC-CSMandmultiple-access broadcast (MABC)-CSM. We investigate these schemes in terms of the outage probability, the average transmission rate, the asymptotic behavior, and the diversity-multiplexing tradeoff. The analysis of the paper shows that, first, the I-TDBC-CSM scheme achieves the full diversity of order $L\min (M_1,M_2)+M_1M_2$ , where $M_1$ and $M_2$ are the numbers of antennas employed by the two transceivers; second, the TDBC-CSM and MABC-CSM schemes achieve the diversity of order $L\min (M_1,M_2)$ , where this quantity is the maximum achievable diversity gain in the absence of the direct link between the transceivers; third, the TDBC-CSM and I-TDBC-CSM schemes effectively overcome the rate loss incurred due to the half-duplex limitation of the relay nodes; fourth, the MABC-CSM scheme not only overcomes the half-duplex limitation of the relay nodes but also mitigates the spectral efficiency loss incurred due to the half-duplex limitation of the transceivers; and fifth, if one or both of the transceivers are equipped with a massive antenna array, the asymptotic average rate of the CSM-based schemes scales linearly with the number of potential relay nodes, as opposed to the conventional relaying schemes, in which the average rate is not scalable with $L$. We provide extensive simulation results to confirm the theoretical analysis of the paper. This paper studies the joint beamforming design and time allocation for a two-way energy harvesting (EH) relay network, where a single-antenna base station and a single-antenna user communicate with each other through multiple-single antenna EH relay nodes, and an external multiantenna power beacon wirelessly power the relays. Unlike the existing studies that assumed the symmetric two-way relaying scenario, we assume a more practical scenario of asymmetric two-way relaying considering different traffic demands on the downlink and uplink. In this paper, we design the optimal beamforming vectors at the relays and at the power beacon jointly with the time allocation between information and EH transmissions, in the sense of maximizing the sum rate of the asymmetric information transmission under the EH constraints at the relays, and the power constraint at the power beacon. The formulated optimization problem is nonconvex, and thus, it is difficult to solve. To solve this challenging problem, we propose an iterative algorithm based on the semidefinite relaxation and the successive convex approximation techniques. Also, to reduce the computational complexity, we propose an efficient noniterative scheme based on the maximum-ratio transmission. In large scale multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems (or massive MIMO systems), hybrid beamforming is a promising technique due to its versatile tradeoff between implementation cost (including hardware cost and power consumption) and system performance. In this paper, we investigate the downlink millimeter wave (mmWave) multi-user massive MIMO system and propose an interference cancellation (IC) framework on hybrid beamforming design. Based on the proposed framework, three successive interference cancellation (SIC) aided hybrid beamforming algorithms are proposed to deal with inter-user and intra-user interference. Specifically, for the first proposed algorithm, we use zero-forcing (ZF) to cancel inter-user interference and use SIC to cancel intra-user interference. For the second one, SIC is used to cancel inter-user interference and ZF is used to cancel intra-user interference. Both inter-user interference and intra-user interference are suppressed by SIC in the third algorithm. Furthermore, the optimal detection order of data streams is derived according to the post-detection signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR). Numerical results show that the proposed SIC-aided hybrid beamforming algorithms outperforms the existing approaches in terms of spectral efficiency (SE) at the cost of computational complexity for the SIC procedure. This paper considers the downlink of an ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC) system in which a base station (BS) serves multiple single-antenna users in the short (finite) blocklength (FBL) regime with the assistance of a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS). In the FBL regime, the users' achievable rates are complex functions of the beamforming vectors and of the RIS's programmable reflecting elements (PREs). We propose the joint design of the transmit beamformers and PREs to maximize the geometric mean (GM) of these rates (GM-rate) and show that this approach provides fair rate distribution and thus reliable links to all users. This paper proposes a Hierarchical Rate Splitting (HRS)-based and Macro Base Station (MBS)-assisted cooperative content delivery scheme for Cache-enabled Cloud Radio Access Networks (C $^{2}$ -RANs). In this scheme, a user is served by a cluster of Small Base Stations (SBSs) that cache contents. If the user-requested content is missing in its cache, the SBS retrieves it from the central processor (backhaul link) and the MBS (wireless broadcast). We minimize the total delay of this system. We thus optimize user grouping, decoding order, RS variables, BS clustering, and beamforming subject to the transmit power and backhaul capacity constraints. This process formulates a non-convex problem, which we decouple into three subproblems. First, we must pair users to reduce intra-group interference. We thus develop a Low-Complexity User Pairing (LCUP) algorithm. Second, we optimize the decoding order to minimize the broadcast link delay. We, therefore, propose a Dynamic Delay-based Decoding Order Update (D $^{3}$ OU) algorithm. Third, we jointly design the RS variables, beamforming, and BS clustering. We use surrogate optimization via the Quadratic Transform (QT), Woodbury matrix identity, and Taylor expansion. We then recast this problem to a Two-Tier Alternating (TTA) problem, which we solve with closed-form (outer tier) and convex (inner tier) formulations. We integrate these algorithms to propose an overall algorithm. It achieves significant performance gains and a 3-fold reduction in time-complexity over the standard Semi-Definite Relaxation (SDR)-based algorithm and several benchmark schemes. Massive MIMO is a promising air interface technology for 5G wireless communications. Such antenna systems offer capabilities to utilize channel correlations to create beams suitable for user specific transmissions. Most of the prior research is devoted to user-specific transmission in such systems, where a narrow beam is formed towards a user to improve its reception. Meanwhile, public-channel transmission to multiple users at once by means of broad beams has been understudied. In this paper, we introduce the concept of array-size invariant (ASI) beamforming, enabling generation of broad beams from very large antenna arrays where all elements are transmitting at maximum power. The ASI technique offers the possibility to achieve a perfectly flat array factor by exploiting the additional degree of freedom coming from the dual-polarization beamforming. The proposed technique is applicable to both uniform linear and rectangular arrays. The benefits of the method are shown by means of several numerical examples. In particular, the practical usefulness of the ASI beamforming, in terms of coverage and energy efficiency, is illustrated on an example of designing a cell-specific broad beam for public-channel transmission in a realistic network deployment. Mobile edge computing (MEC) and millimeter wave (mmWave) communications are capable of significantly reducing the network's delay and enhancing its capacity. In this paper we investigate a mmWave and device-to-device (D2D) assisted MEC system, in which user A carries out some computational tasks and shares the results with user B with the aid of a base station (BS). We assume partial offloading model and the task can be partitioned into two portions: the first part is computed locally at user A, while the second part is transmitted to the BS and computed by the MEC server. The computational results are then sent to user B through a D2D link and via the link from the BS to user B, respectively. To support computation offloading, both the users and the BS are equipped with multiple antennas and employ analog and digital (A/D) hybrid beamforming. Moreover, we propose a novel two-timescale joint hybrid beamforming and task allocation algorithm to reduce the system latency whilst cut down the required signaling overhead. Specifically, the high-dimensional analog beamforming matrices are updated in a frame-based manner based on the channel state information (CSI) samples, where each frame consists of a number of time slots, while the low-dimensional digital beamforming matrices and the offloading ratio are optimized more frequently relied on the low-dimensional effective channel matrices in each time slot. A stochastic successive convex approximation (SSCA) based algorithm is developed to design the long-term analog beamforming matrices. As for the short-term variables, the digital beamforming matrices are optimized relying on the innovative penalty-concave convex procedure (penalty-CCCP) for handling the mmWave non-linear transmit power constraint, and the offloading ratio can be obtained via the derived closed-form solution. In this paper, we study a novel reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) enabled symbiotic radio system, where a RIS is used to enhance the communication between the primary transmitter (PTx) and the primary receiver (PRx), and concurrently transmit its information (e.g., environmental monitoring information) to the PRx by varying the phase shifts. The objective is to cooperatively optimize the active transmit beamforming at the PTx and passive reflecting beamforming at the RIS to minimize the PTx's transmit power, subject to the signal-to-noise ratio constraints of primary and RIS transmissions. A new optimization problem is formulated where the RIS phase shifts are not only related to the channel state information (CSI), but also related to its message. First, we consider the perfect CSI setup to draw useful insights into the cooperative beamforming design between the PTx and RIS. Then, the worst-case robust beamforming design is carried out under the imperfect CSI setup. In particular, we take into account the imperfect successive interference cancellation at the PRx. Finally, simulation results show the effectiveness of the RIS information transfer and the integration of RIS into a symbiotic radio system can significantly improve the performance. This article studies the transmit beamforming security in the dual-functional radar-communication (DFRC) system, where the radar beam also serves as the artificial jamming to suppress potential eavesdropper channels. Unlike previous researches, which assumed that the lone target might be a potential eavesdropper on the adversary side, this paper analyses a more generic scenario in which the eavesdroppers’ channel state information (CSI) is unknown. The eavesdropping rate should be limited to guarantee transmission confidentiality, which is intractable owing to the unknown CSI. To address this issue, we present the long-term eavesdropping signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) as a more tractable security metric. Based on the long-term eavesdropping SINR, the sum rate maximization (SRM) and jamming power maximization (JPM) transmission scheme are investigated. For the SRM scheme, we propose a zero-forcing (ZF) suboptimal algorithm to solve the non-convex fractional programming (FP) problem, and for the JPM scheme, the resultant problem is solved via the semidefinite relaxation (SDR) technique. In this paper, a robust uplink transmission scheme combining beamforming (BF) with rate splitting multiple access is proposed to improve the spectrum efficiency of a multibeam satellite system. By assuming that only imperfect channel state information is available, we first formulate an optimization problem to minimize the total transmit power under the constraints of individual transmit power budget and users’ rate requirements. Then, based on the successive convex approximation and difference-of-convex, we present an approach to convert the nonconvex constraints into convex ones, and obtain the BF vectors and power control parameters through iterative procedure. In this paper, we investigate the anti-jamming problem of a directional modulation (DM) system with the aid of intelligent reflecting surface (IRS). As an efficient tool to combat malicious jamming, receive beamforming (RBF) is usually designed by using the statistical properties of the jamming received by Bob. Thus, it is very necessary to estimate the receive jamming covariance matrix (JCM) at Bob. To achieve a precise JCM estimation, three JCM estimation methods, including eigenvalue decomposition (EVD), parametric estimation method by gradient descend (PEM-GD) and parametric estimation method by alternating optimization (PEM-AO), are proposed. Here, the proposed EVD is derived according to the rank-2 constraint of JCM. The PEM-GD method fully explores the structure features of JCM and the PEM-AO is proposed to decrease the computational complexity of the former via dimensionality reduction. The simulation results show that the proposed three methods perform better than directly using sample covariance matrix. In future wireless communication systems, intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) plays an important role since it is capable of dynamically reconfiguring the channel conditions. In this paper, we apply IRS to facilitate the communication of an uplink multiple-input multiple-output non-orthogonal multiple access system. The objective is to maximize the system energy-efficiency (EE), requiring a joint optimization of the active beamforming at the base station, passive beamforming at the IRS, and power allocation. An iterative method is proposed to solve the formulated multi-variable non-convex optimization problem. Moreover, a low-complexity user ordering method is provided. Numerical results verify the rapid convergence of the iterative optimization scheme and the effectiveness of the user ordering. We study multiuser detection for uplink transmissions using only analog beamformers in a millimeter-wave (mm-wave) communication system under a limited scattering environment in this paper. In particular, the successive interference cancelation (SIC)-based detection at a base station (BS) that is equipped with an antenna array is considered with the outputs of analog beamformers. We employ beam selection from a codebook of analog beams for low-complexity analog beamforming in the SIC-based detection and compressive sensing (CS)-based channel estimation that is suitable for the BS that only has analog beamformers. Through simulation results, we can see that the performance of the joint analog beam selection and SIC-based detection is comparable with the performance of the SIC-based detection (with ideal digital beamforming) at the cost of more antenna elements with lower complexity. Multicell coordinated beamforming (CB) can mitigate intercell interference (ICI). However, existing work on CB focuses on systems that maximize overall throughput. This paper considers CB for systems with multiple receive antennas and further extends the CB to multiuser and multistream transmission. We consider fairness and pay close attention to cell-edge users. CB that maximizes the harmonic sum of signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) can be derived into a low-complexity algorithm that favors cell-edge users. Two iterative algorithms are developed. From the simulation results, the proposed algorithms can provide a better fifth-percentile user throughput compared with the CB algorithms minimizing mean square error, maximizing uplink SINR, and maximizing weighted sum rate. Phase noise (PHN) and in-phase/quadrature (I/Q) imbalance are two major radio-frequency (RF) impairments in directconversion wireless transceivers. Beamforming and orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) schemes have been adopted in broadband wireless standards due to their significant performance gains. In this paper, we analyze the impact of joint I/Q imbalance and PHN on beamforming OFDM direct-conversion transceivers. This paper studies user-specific clustering for a downlink cloud radio access network (C-RAN), where a central unit (CU), connected to all base stations (BSs) via limited-capacity backhaul links, coordinates the BSs to form cooperative clusters for every user. By taking into account the training overhead for channel estimation in C-RAN, we design the clustering scheme aimed at maximizing the average net throughput of the network subject to the constraint on backhaul capacity, where a hybrid coordinated multipoint (CoMP) transmission mode is considered. The proposed clustering scheme can be operated in a semi-dynamic manner merely based on large-scale channel information, has low computational complexity, and performs close to the optimal scheme found by exhaustive searching. Under two special cases where the backhaul capacity is very stringent and unlimited, the proposed scheme is then tailored for pure coordinated beamforming (CB) mode and pure joint transmission (JT) mode to further reduce the clustering complexity. This paper presents a coherent scheme to optimize an in-band full-duplex multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) relay via beamforming and transmit power allocation in a two-hop single-input–single-output (SISO) link under full channel knowledge and perfect hardware assumptions. First, we derive in closed form the optimal pair of transmit power and receive filter for a fixed transmit filter by unifying the minimum-mean-square-error (MMSE) filtering with the SISO-equivalent power allocation, as an iterative approach is not guaranteed to converge to global optimum. Second, we propose a heuristic algorithm to approximate the optimal transmit filter for a fixed receive filter. Furthermore, we study the well-known null-space projection constraint and derive a singular value decomposition (SVD)-based solution for the arbitrary-rank self-interference channel by generalizing the optimal solution under the assumption of rank-1 self-interference channel. Finally, we combine these solutions into a partially iterative algorithm in order to address the global optimization as our observations justify that some of the aforementioned schemes converge to the optimal solution under certain criteria. The numerical analysis of the proposed iterative algorithm demonstrates close-to-optimal performance relative to the theoretical upper bound of the end-to-end link in terms of maximum achievable throughput. This paper considers short-term power constrained cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) scenarios where a large set of multi-antenna access points (APs) provide service to a group of single-antenna mobile stations (MSs) on a spatially correlated multipath environment. Based on a probabilistic approach, the spatially correlated propagation links are modeled using either Ricean or Rayleigh fading channel models that combine a deterministic line-of-sight (LOS) propagation path with a small-scale fading caused by non-line-of-sight (NLOS) multipath propagation. Assuming the use of minimum mean square error (MMSE) channel estimates, closed-form expressions for the downlink (DL) achievable spectral efficiency of a cellfree massive MIMO network with short-term power constraints (i.e., a vector normalized conjugate beamformer (NCB)) are derived and benchmarked against that provided by the conventional cell-free massive MIMO network with long-term power constraints (i.e., the conventional conjugate beamforming (CB)). The performance of the hybrid beamforming system based on the full-connected structure is close to that of the full-digital one in millimeter-wave (mmWave) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. However, due to the high complexity of circuit wiring in practical applications, it has been greatly restricted. This paper investigates the hybrid (analog/digital) beamforming design of a multiuser mmWave massive MIMO system with sub-connected structure. For this system, we focus on a sum-rate maximization probelm. Considering the joint design of the receiver, and transmitter, a two-stage design method is adopted. In the analog stage, the analog beamformer, and combiner are designed by the proposed piecewise dual joint iterative approximation (PDJIA) method, which not only can obtain closed-form solutions but also has linear property. Based on the criterion of avoiding the loss of information, the problem of digital beamforming is solved by exploiting the baseband piecewise successive approximation (BPSA) method, which can effectively increase the number of users served. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme outperforms the state-of-the art MIMO hybrid beamforming design schemes, and more accurately approximates to that of the full-digital system. Nonorthogonal multiple access (NOMA) has been considered as a promising technology for fifth-generation wireless communication systems. In this paper, we consider a two-cell multiple-input-multiple-output NOMA downlink interference channel with one multiantenna base station (BS) and multiple multiantenna users in each cell. Each user treats interferences from adjacent cell as additional noises and does not attempt to decode them. This paper aims to design interference channel beamformers to maximize weighted sum capacity of the strongest users in two cells under quality of service requirements at other users and transmit power budget constraint at each BS. Such problem is complicated and nonconvex due to the expression of a logarithm of a determinant $(\log \det)$ minus $\log \det$ in the objective function and constraints. For the nonconvex problem, we put forward a successive convex approximation (SCA) based iterative algorithm. Since the computational complexity of SCA-based iterative algorithm is high, we also put forward an efficient majorization-minimization based iterative algorithm. This paper focuses on securing confidential communication in multiple intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRS) assisted terahertz (THz) systems, where a potential eavesdropper can intercept either the base station (BS)-IRS link or the IRS-user link. Notably, the secure transmission may be intercepted and blocked by the eavesdropper due to the blockage-prone nature in THz bands. To characterize the blocking effects of the eavesdropper, the blocking-based path loss is first investigated. With the imperfect eavesdropper channel state information (ECSI), the worst-case secrecy rate (WCSR) is derived, and a joint optimization problem of hybrid beamforming at the BS and reflecting beamforming at the IRS is formulated. For the BS-IRS link eavesdropping, the zero-forcing (ZF) principle-based hybrid beamforming and the closed-form phase shifts of multiple IRSs are respectively proposed. For the IRS-user link eavesdropping, an iterative algorithm is proposed to tackle the non-convex optimization problem with a given information leakage threshold. Finally, a robust secure transmission strategy for multi-eavesdropper systems is further investigated. Simulation results demonstrate that compared with blockage-unaware scenarios, our proposed scheme can resist the adverse effects of the blockage-prone nature of THz waves on information security, and significantly boost secrecy performance. To extend the transmission range governed by limited transmit power, collaborative beamforming (CB) can be employed with a virtual antenna array (VAA) constructed by an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) swarm. CB techniques combined with physical layer security (PLS) algorithms are known to better secure transmissions of sensitive information in the presence of eavesdropping attacks, compared to co-located antenna-based schemes. In particular, analog collaborative beamforming (ACB) with random VAA topologies, which is suitable for UAV networks due to its lower signaling/channel estimation overhead compared to the digital CB, can provide a significantly higher secrecy rate by creating noise-like signals at eavesdroppers. However, the increase in energy consumption to improve secrecy rate had been ignored in the existing ACB-based PLS schemes, which is of paramount importance considering the limited onboard energy of UAVs. Thus, motivated by such limitation, in this paper, we examine the security energy efficiency of the ACB-based PLS technique, where a group of UAVs (or VAA elements) randomly change their locations in a distributed manner to randomize the array factor of the VAA, i.e., a stochastic VAA. The proposed stochastic VAA outperforms the existing static VAA in terms of secrecy energy efficiency as verified by analytic and numerical results. The success of fog radio access networks (F-RANs) is critically dependent on the potential quality of service (QoS) that they can offer to users in the face of capacity-constrained fronthaul links and limited caches at their remote radio heads (RRHs). In this context, the collaborative beamforming design is very challenging, since it constitutes a large-dimensional nonlinearly constrained optimization problem. The paper develops a new technique for tackling these critical challenges in fog computing. We show that all the associated constraints can be efficiently dealt with maximizing the geometric mean (GM) of the user throughputs (GM-throughput) subject to the affordable total transmit power constraints. To elaborate, the GM-throughput maximization judiciously exploits the fronthaul links and the RRHs’ caches by relying on our novel algorithm, which evaluates low-complexity closed-form expressions in each of its iterations. From adapting to the propagation environment to reconstructing the propagation environment, reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) changes the design paradigm of wireless communications. To reconstruct the propagation environment, joint beamforming of RIS and multi-input multi-output (MIMO) is crucial. Unfortunately, due to the coupling effect of the active beamforming of MIMO and passive beamforming of RIS, it is difficult to find the optimal solution to the joint beamforming problem, so a serious performance loss will be caused. In this paper, inspired by the end-to-end (E2E) learning of communication system, we propose the E2E learning based RIS-aided communication system to mitigate the performance loss via deep learning techniques. The key idea is to simultaneously optimize the signal processing functions at base station (BS), RIS, and user, including active beamforming for BS and user, passive beamforming for RIS. This way is able to avoid the performance loss caused by alternately optimizing each function of the RIS-aided system. Specifically, we firstly utilize a deep neural network (DNN) to realize the modulation and beamforming for BS and utilize another DNN to realize the demodulation and combining for user. Then, the RIS passive beamforming is also represented by trainable parameters, which could be simultaneously optimized with the DNNs at BS and user. Simulation results show that the proposed E2E learning based RIS-aided communication system could achieve the better bit error rate (BER) performance than traditional RIS-aided communication systems. Most of beamforming methods rely on the proper estimation of the steering vectors of the incoming signals in order to calculate appropriate array feeding weights. However, this estimation is often performed on a theoretical basis, since most methods assume that the array elements radiate like isotropic sources and consider only the phase differences between them due to their different spatial positions. This is a rough estimation as it ignores both the non-isotropic radiation pattern of the array elements and the mutual coupling between them. To overcome these limitations, we use a different approach for the construction of steering vectors based on the embedded patterns of the array elements, extracted through full-wave analysis. This approach is used in this paper to modify two well-known beamforming methods, namely the null steering beamforming and the minimum variance distortionless response method. Both modified methods are applied to a realistic model of a microstrip planar antenna array, and thus, both the azimuth and polar angles of the main lobe and nulls directions are controlled (beamforming in 3D space). Extensive statistical analyses are performed by implementing several scenarios of escalating difficulty, in order to examine the performance and temporal response of the modified beamforming methods in comparison to the respective conventional methods and also in comparison to beamforming methods based on evolutionary techniques. In this paper, we study concurrent beamforming issue for achieving high capacity in indoor millimeter-wave (mmWave) networks. The general concurrent beamforming issue is first formulated as an optimization problem to maximize the sum rates of concurrent transmissions, considering the mutual interference. To reduce the complexity of beamforming and the total setup time, concurrent beamforming is decomposed into multiple single-link beamforming, and an iterative searching algorithm is proposed to quickly achieve the suboptimal transmission/reception beam sets. A codebook-based beamforming protocol at medium access control (MAC) layer is then introduced in a distributive manner to determine the beam sets.
