Covert communications is critical in many application scenarios for ensuring transmission security and privacy. Two-way protocols are widely adopted in intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) assisted relaying networks to enable covert communications and prevent wireless signals from being overheard. To quantify the performance of covert communications in this special scenario, we derive the closed-form expression of outage probability and its asymptote in this paper. Considering the worst-case of covert communications, the optimal normalized power threshold of warden's detector is analyzed under a complex Gaussian distribution approximation. To meet the requirement of the detection error probability, the ratio of the transmission power between the covert nodes is investigated. We consider multiple unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) serving a density of ground terminals (GTs) as base stations. The objective is to minimize the outage probability of GT-to-UAV transmissions. Optimal placement of UAVs under different UAV altitude constraints and GT densities is studied. A practical variant of the Rician fading model, which has been developed by Azari et al. (2018) specifically for UAV systems, is used to model the communication channels. First, the structure of optimal deployments is determined when the common altitude constraint is large. For a wide class of GT densities, it is shown that all UAVs should be placed to the same location in an optimal deployment. A design implication is that one can use a single multi-antenna UAV as opposed to multiple single-antenna UAVs without loss of optimality. Next, using a random deployment argument, a general upper bound on the optimal outage probability is found for any density of GTs and any number of UAVs. Further, for any arbitrary user density, centralized and distributed numerical algorithms are designed using particle swarm optimization and modified gradient descent algorithms, respectively. This article establishes an analytical framework for the upper bound on the average Age-of-Information (AoI) in first-come-first-served (FCFS) wireless communications where a certain level of outage probability is unavoidable. To begin with, we analyze the average AoI and derive a general upper bound for G/G/1 systems with a certain outage probability. Subsequently, for an M/M/1 system with the FCFS scheme, we obtain a concise closed-form expression of the upper bound, and further refine the upper bound after analyzing the relative error. Interestingly, it is found by the analysis that the relative error is independent of the service rate, and the upper bound becomes tighter as the outage probability increases. Based on the refined upper bound, we minimize the average AoI for the communications suffering from block Rayleigh fading. We derive a closed-form expression of the outage probability over a fading channel, and then prove that the refined upper bound is a convex function with respect to the average update generating rate. Consequently, we optimize the AoI performance by solving a convex optimization problem formulated utilizing the refined upper bound expression. In this paper, we study the physical-layer security of a hybrid satellite-terrestrial network composed of a satellite, multiple terrestrial decode-and-forward (DF) relays and users in the presence of a terrestrial eavesdropper who attempts to tap legitimate information from both satellite and relays. We consider two different scenarios: I) the channel state information (CSI) of wiretap links is known, and II) the CSI of wiretap links is unknown. Accordingly, optimal and suboptimal relay-user pairing schemes are proposed for the aforementioned two scenarios, respectively. Specifically, a relay-user pair maximizing the secrecy rate is chosen as the optimal one to participate in the transmission, where all links’ CSI is used to perform relay-user pairing. However, suboptimal relay-user pairing scheme is designed only relying on the main links’ CSI without requiring wiretap links’ CSI, where a relay-user pair with the maximal transmission rate of main link is selected. Also, closed-form expressions of secrecy outage probability with both integer and rational fading severity parameter are derived in the case of satellite links undergo Shadowed-Rician fading and terrestrial links subject to Rayleigh fading. Furthermore, asymptotic secrecy outage probability analysis is conducted in the high signal-to-noise ratio region. This paper investigates the performance of an intelligent reflective surface (IRS) assisted non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) system, where the IRS is mounted on an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) to assist the transmissions from a base station (BS). The BS utilizes the UAV as a relay to serve multiple user equipments (UEs) on the ground. In addition to the IRS relaying links, we also incorporate direct non line-of-sight links between the BS and UEs. We derive the outage probability for this system configuration. Moreover, we obtain a bound of the ergodic spectral efficiency to extract various useful insights. Furthermore, we also compare the performance of the proposed system design against the baseline scheme. In this paper, we investigate a mobile edge computing (MEC) network, where the user has some computational tasks to be assisted by multiple computational access points (CAPs) through offloading. We consider practical communication scenarios with limited spectrum resources, and the cochannel interference arising from the aggressive reuse of frequency severely degrades the system offloading performance. To enhance the system performance, we provide three CAP selection criteria to choose one best CAP among multiple ones. Specifically, criterion I maximizes the computational capability at the CAP, criterion II minimizes the interfering power, while criterion III maximizes the instantaneous channel gain of data link. In time-varying channel environments, the CAP selection may be outdated, which deteriorates the system performance. For the three criteria, we evaluate the system outage probability in the outdated channel state information (CSI) by taking into account the latency, energy consumption and data rate, and provide the analytical and asymptotic expressions of outage probability, from which we obtain some critical insights on the system design. Simulation results are finally demonstrated to verify the proposed studies. In particular, criterion III under the perfect CSI can achieve the system whole diversity order coming from multiple CAPs. Efficient connectivity in cellular-connected unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV)s is limited by scarcity of the radio spectrum and strong inter-cell interference (ICI). To address these issues, we propose an aerial-terrestrial network non-orthogonal multiple access (ATN-NOMA) scheme. In this proposed scheme, we pair the aerial user (AU) and terrestrial user (TU) in a NOMA setting to leverage their asymmetric channel gains and rate demands in downlink communications. In ATN-NOMA, the strong ICI issue at the AU receiver is further managed by an elevation-angle based user association, equipping the AU with an adjustable beamwidth directional antenna, and forming a beamforming among the coordinated terrestrial base stations (BS)s. We then obtain the optimal beamwidth and suboptimal power allocation so that the TUs’ sum-rate is maximized subject to the AU’s Quality-of-Service (QoS) requirement. The corresponding optimization problem is non-convex in which we exploit the structure of the problem and apply successive convex approximation (SCA) to obtain a suboptimal solution. We then derive the statistical properties, which consequently enable us to estimate the aggregated ICI. In cases where no interfering BSs have the same elevation angle as the coordinated BSs, we further approximate the AU’s outage probability. We then compare the TUs’ sum-rate and the outage probability of the ATN-NOMA with multiple existing schemes. Extensive simulation results show that our proposed ATN-NOMA scheme outperforms existing schemes by 52-91% in terms of the sum-rate, and its analytical outage probability can be as low as the order of $10^{-17}$. The mixture of wireless and power line communications (PLC) is vital for implementing new applications in smart grid and vehicular communications. In this work, we investigate the performance of non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) based dual-hop hybrid communication systems with decode-and-forward relay. The wireless channel is characterized by Nakagami-m fading under an additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN), while the PLC channels are characterized by Log-normal distribution with Bernoulli Gaussian noise including both background and impulsive noise components. New closed-form expressions for the outage probability, the asymptotic outage probability and ergodic capacity are derived and verified via extensive representative simulations. For more insights on the outage performance, we analyze the diversity order. Additionally, we proposed a power allocation optimization technique to achieve an outage-optimal performance. The results show that the system outage probability improves as the impulsive noise index and the arrival probability of the impulsive component of the PLC additive noise decrease, while their effect is negligible on the ergodic capacity. Ultra-reliable low latency communication (URLLC) requires the packet error rate to be on the order of $10^{-9}$ - $10^{-5}$. Determining the appropriate transmission rate to satisfy this ultra-reliability constraint requires deriving the statistics of the channel in the ultra-reliable region and then incorporating these statistics into the rate selection. In this paper, we propose a framework for determining the rate selection for ultra-reliable communications based on the extreme value theory (EVT). We first model the wireless channel at URLLC by estimating the parameters of the generalized Pareto distribution (GPD) best fitting to the tail distribution of the received powers, i.e., the power values below a certain threshold. Then, we determine the maximum transmission rate by incorporating the Pareto distribution into the rate selection function. Finally, we validate the selected rate by computing the resulting error probability. Based on the data collected within the engine compartment of Fiat Linea, we demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed methodology in determining the maximum transmission rate compared to the traditional extrapolation-based approaches. Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is considered as a multiple access technique for supporting massive number of devices with high spectral efficiency. Simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) is an efficient solution for fully autonomous and sustainable communication networks. In this paper, application of SWIPT in networks employing cooperative NOMA (CNOMA) is investigated with imperfect channel state information (CSI). Performance of the CNOMA network with SWIPT is investigated in a multi-tier downlink scenario with macro-base stations (MBSs) and femto-base stations (FBSs). The distribution of MBSs and FBSs follow Poisson point process model. Unlike solution in the existing literature, instead of using only the superimposed signal for energy harvesting (EH), in this work, the cooperating node/user employs EH using interference from the adjacent base stations. Expressions for outage probability and throughput are derived at the user pair (comprising a cell-center user and a cell-edge user) served using NOMA. The ecosystem of airborne platforms is maturing rapidly and becoming essential to meeting the communication requirements of modern wireless networks. In such a context, the speed, range, and quality of service are highly dependent on a timely access to the right amount and type of affordable spectrum. In this way, evaluating the statistical properties of the air-to-ground (AtG) channel in different built-up propagation environments with regard to the operating frequency is crucial for performance analysis of airborne platform-assisted communications. In this paper, we construct a framework for the line-of-sight (LoS) probability based on the intrusion ratio of obstacles within the first Fresnel zone, yielding an analytical expression for the LoS probability that is sensitive to the operating frequency, the transmitter and receiver heights, the horizontal distance between them, and three other parameters depicting the statistical properties of the urban environment. The model developed is accurate enough to capture scattering mechanisms such as reflection and diffraction, while being sufficiently flexible mathematically to allow, based for instance on powerful analytical tools such as stochastic geometry, a seamless and physically meaningful system-level performance evaluation of modern wireless networks in the presence of airborne platforms. This paper provides a comprehensive framework to analyze the performance of non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) in the downlink transmission of a single-carrier and multi-carrier terahertz (THz) network. Specifically, we first develop a novel user pairing scheme for the THz-NOMA network which ensures the performance gains of NOMA over orthogonal multiple access (OMA) for each individual user in the NOMA pair and adapts according to the molecular absorption. Then, we characterize novel outage probability expressions considering a single-carrier and multi-carrier THz-NOMA network in the presence of various user pairing schemes, Nakagami- $m$ channel fading, and molecular absorption noise. We propose a moment-generating-function (MGF) based approach to analyze the outage probability of users in a multi-carrier THz network. Furthermore, for negligible thermal noise, we provide simplified single-integral expressions to compute the outage probability in a multi-carrier network. Optical wireless communication (OWC) over atmospheric turbulence and pointing errors is a well-studied topic. Still, there is limited research on signal fading due to random fog in an outdoor environment for terrestrial wireless communications. In this paper, we analyze the performance of a decode-and-forward (DF) relaying under the combined effect of random fog, pointing errors, and atmospheric turbulence with a negligible line-of-sight (LOS) direct link. We consider a generalized model for the end-to-end channel with independent and not identically distributed (i.ni.d.) pointing errors, random fog with Gamma distributed attenuation coefficient, double generalized gamma (DGG) atmospheric turbulence, and asymmetrical distance between the source and destination. We develop density and distribution functions of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) under the combined effect of random fog, pointing errors, and atmospheric turbulence (FPT) channel and distribution function for the combined channel with random fog and pointing errors (FP). Using the derived statistical results, we present analytical expressions of the outage probability, average SNR, ergodic rate, and average bit error rate (BER) for both FP and FPT channels in terms of OWC system parameters. We also develop simplified and asymptotic performance analysis to provide insight on the system behavior analytically under various practically relevant scenarios. We demonstrate the mutual effects of channel impairments and pointing errors on the OWC performance, and show that the relaying system provides significant performance improvement compared with the direct transmissions, especially when pointing errors and fog becomes more pronounced. As an important technique of enabling global access for 6G, low earth orbit satellite (LEO-Sat) communication is still facing the challenges of large path-loss, and severe Doppler effect. This paper studies the reliability performance of a downlink LEO-Sat communication system, where the orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) scheme is employed to combat severe Doppler effect. Further, the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) based cooperative transmission is developed, in order to compensate for the large margin of path-loss caused by the long transmission distance. In particular, the closed-form expression for the outage probability of the OTFS based LEO-Sat transmission is derived, where the novel moment matching approach is used to closely approximate the PDF of a sum of shadowing Rician (SR) variables. Further, the condition of using UAV cooperation is obtained so that the positive reliability gain is guaranteed. Finally, both the theoretical analysis and simulation results show that, the OTFS scheme can significantly outperform the traditional OFDM scheme, while demanding to carefully address the trade-off between reliability improvement and implementation complexity determined by modulation size. Given its ability to control and manipulate wireless environments, reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), also known as intelligent reflecting surface (IRS), has emerged as a key enabler technology for the six-generation (6G) cellular networks. In the meantime, vehicular environment radio propagation is negatively influenced by a large set of objects that cause transmission distortion such as high buildings. Therefore, this work is devoted to explore the area of RIS technology integration with vehicular communications while considering the dynamic nature of such communication environment. Specifically, we provide a system model where RoadSide Unit (RSU) leverages RIS to provide indirect wireless transmissions to disconnected areas, known as dark zones. Dark zones are spots within RSU coverage where the communication links are blocked due to the existence of blockages. In details, a discrete RIS is utilized to provide communication links between the RSU and the vehicles passing through out-of-service zones. Therefore, the joint problem of RSU resource scheduling and RIS passive beamforming or phase-shift matrix is formulated as an optimization problem with the objective of maximizing the minimum average bit rate. The formulated problem is mixed integer non-convex program which is difficult to be solved and does not account for the uncertain dynamic environment in vehicular networks. Thereby, we resort to alternative methods based on Deep Reinforcement Learning to determine RSU wireless scheduling and Block Coordinate Descent (BCD) to solve for the phase-shift matrix, i.e., passive beamforming, of the RIS. The Markov Decision Process (MDP) is defined and the complexity of the solution approach is discussed. A hybrid satellite-terrestrial relay network (HSTRN) has been envisioned as a promising communication architecture for future wireless communications, which can prominently reduce the impact of shadow fading and expand service coverage. In this paper, we conduct theoretical performance analysis for a dual-hop communication system, consisting of multiple relays and multiple users in the HSTRN with the amplify-and-forward protocol. For the shadowing effect and the multipath effect, we introduce the shadowed-Rician distribution and Nakagami- $m$ fading to characterize the channel models for the satellite-relay and the relay-user links, respectively. Additionally, the opportunistic scheduling scheme is employed, where the optimal relay and the optimal user are selected from the alternative nodes with the maximum instantaneous signal-to-noise ratio. Thereafter, the analytical expressions including ergodic capacity and average symbol error rate (SER) are derived. More specifically, we also present the asymptotic behavior of the average SER at the high signal-to-noise ratio (SRN) regime. The theoretical analysis is validated by the numerical results. In this paper, the outage performance of wireless networks with unstructured topologies is investigated. The network reliability perspective of graph theory is used to obtain the network outage polynomial of generalized wireless networks for both uncorrelated and correlated wireless channels. A relationship is established between the max-flow min-cut theorem and key communication performance indicators. The diversity order is equal to the size of the minimum cut-set between source and destination, and the coding gain is the number of cut-sets with size equal to the minimum cut. An ergodic capacity analysis of arbitrary network topologies based on the network outage polynomial is also presented. Due to the scarcity of channel availability in IEEE 802.11p standard, applications related to infotainment and multimedia services are vulnerable to suffer from delays and connectivity. Cognitive radio (CR) has the potential to overcome the issue of spectrum scarcity. By making use of the CR technology, secondary users (SU) can access a radio frequency spectrum other than 802.11p through spectrum sensing. Majority of low complex existing algorithms are based on energy detection that are considering the static environment of SUs. In practice, the algorithms, which considers mobility are mainly focused on low vehicle speed. However, the combined effect of primary user (PU) activity statistics and SU mobility has not been tackled while evaluating the performance of opportunistic spectrum access. In particular, this work considers the joint impact of PU activity and vehicle mobility on spectrum sensing performance by considering single lane and double lane vehicular scenarios. We also evaluate the impact of traffic densities on sensing performance. The main contribution of this work is to show the impact of PU activity statistics on sensing performance by deriving analytical expressions for miss-detection probability. These expressions are used for analysis and simulation of cognitive radio enabled vehicular communications. From our observations, it is noted that the probability of vehicle connectivity is improved approximately by 50 $\%$ for initial distance of SU when spectrum sensing is employed under PU activity. Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) and ambient backscatter communication (AmBC) have gained a lot of interest as key enabling technologies in wireless communications systems. NOMA is a key player for enhancing spectrum utilization either by multiplexing multiple messages for the same user or allowing multi-users access, while AmBC shows great potential for enhancing both spectrum and energy efficiency for battery-limited devices. In this paper, the performance of a downlink NOMA multiplexing based symbiotic-radio ($SR$) AmBC system is analyzed over Nakagami-m fading channels. New closed-form expressions for the exact and asymptotic outage probabilities are derived. Moreover, we analyze the diversity order and the influence of the system parameters on the outage performances. This paper investigates the outage performance of a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted communication system with statistical channel state information (CSI) over Rician fading channels. An approximate closed-form expression of the outage probability is derived by determining the distribution of the RIS-based composite channel. To obtain more insights into the system performance, we derive an asymptotic outage probability expression at high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) region and scaling laws for the coding gain with both continuous and discrete phase shifts. Analytical and simulation results show that the diversity gain is not affected by the number of reflecting elements, but the coding gain exponentially and linearly grows with the number of reflecting elements if the Rician channel factors are larger than and equal to zero, respectively. Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) has proved its great potential for supporting the delay-stringent services in wireless networks. We notice that offloading performance of the MEC system is not only determined by the PHY-layer transmission rate, but also closely related to the performance of channel access and computation at the server. To this end, in this correspondence, we investigate a multiuser MEC system, where each user offloads packet to a single AP equipped with an MEC server by preempting the channel according to carrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance (CSMA/CA) protocol. We derive the effective offloading rate and delay by considering transmission outage caused by the poor channel condition, the MAC-layer channel competition, and the packet overflow due to the limited service capability of the server, where the service process is modelled as an $M/M/1/B$ queue. The theoretical analysis is verified by extensive simulations, which has shown that the competition intensity indicated by the number of users and the packet length, as well as the processing capability of the MEC server including the buffer size and the computation speed, has profound impact on the offloading performance. This paper presents and investigates a dual-hop mixed radio frequency (RF) and underwater optical communication (UWOC) system. In the proposed system, an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) such as drone (S) located at low altitude is transmitting data signal towards the destination (D) which is located under water such as a submarine through a decode and forward (DF) relay (R) mounted on a ship over the sea surface. The data signal is transmitted from the UAV towards the relay located on the ship via RF channel modelled by the Nakagami- $ m$ distributed fading statistics. The relay decodes the received RF data signal and re-transmits it towards the destination via visible light channel modelled by Exponential Generalized Gamma (EGG) distribution. Using the DF relaying protocol, we derive closed form analytical expressions for the outage probability and average bit error rate of the proposed mixed RF-UWOC system. Additionally, UAV optimal altitude analysis has been carried out to find the optimal elevation angle corresponding to the optimal altitude of the UAV where the system performance is maximized. The numerical simulation is carried out to support the performance analysis of the mixed RF-UWOC system and shows the influence of the various channel parameters such as air bubbles, UAV altitude, water salinity variations and scintillation on the end to end performance of the mixed RF-UWOC system. Thanks to the feature of on-demand and flexible deployment, unmanned aerial vehicle base stations (UAV-BS) can enhance coverage and capacity beyond current 5 G cellular networks. The main challenge in deploying UAV-BS lies in the fact that the limited battery in UAB-BS cannot support long-time reliable services. Therefore, a serving UAV-BS being running out its power needs to be replaced with a new fully-charged UAV-BS. This is called UAV-BS replacement process. However, most existing UAV-BS replacement methods ignore the link outage problem during the replacement. Thus the outage-free replacement problem (OFRP) for UAV-BSs arises. We provide a method to calculate the outage probability of the UAV replacement approach. We further formulate the Outage Probability Minimization Problem (OPMP) for UAV-BS replacement. To solve this problem, a 3-Dimensional Outage-Free Replacement Approach (3D-OFRA) is presented, which exploits different heights of swapping UAV-BSs during the replacement process. More importantly, we provide the guidelines of determining the distance between two UAV-BSs to minimize the link outage possibility during the UAV-BS replacement process. Our numerical results show that with the recommended distance between two UAV-BSs based on 3D-OFRA, the outage probability of the served UEs approaches to zero, compared with 40% of the traditional direct replacement approach. Heterogeneous cloud radio access network (H-CRAN) has been deemed as a promising architecture for the fifth generation wireless networks. In H-CRAN, small remote radio heads (SRRHs) are deployed underlaying the macro remote radio head (MRRH) to boost the spectral efficiency. H-CRANs with dense RRHs suffer from severe inter-cell interference due to the random deployment of dense SRRHs, which limits its performance. In this paper, we propose an Edge-Aware RRH-Cooperation (EARC) scheme to mitigate the impact of both the cross-tier and co-tier interference. We partition the users into two groups, Cell Edge Device (CED) and Non-cell Edge Device (NED). These two groups, CED and NED, are mapped into two association modes, dual-association and single-association mode, respectively. In single-association mode, the NED associates with the RRH that provides the maximum received signal. On the other hand, in the dual-association mode, the CED associates with the two strongest RRHs where the two RRHs may belong to the same or different tier(s). Using tools from stochastic geometry, we quantify the performance gains of the proposed EARC scheme in terms of outage probability and ergodic rate. The development of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is one of the driving forces for revolutionizing wireless communications in the modern era. Although there are many unique features of UAV networks, their widespread use is still hampered by the short battery life. As a result, most of the research efforts in this domain mainly have focused on the efficient use of energy through trajectory planning and cooperative communication. While there have been a few proposals to use energy harvesting techniques for UAV networks, a complete understanding of the performance limits of such networks is still missing in the literature and needs further investigations. Within this context, our paper provides a comprehensive performance evaluation of UAV relay networks (UAVRNs) employing non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) technique. Specifically, a cooperative communication system, where a UAV serves as a mobile relay, is fully considered. The UAV relay is considered to be wirelessly-powered and harvests energy from the radio signals received from a nearby base station. For the sake of comparison, both amplify-and-forward (AF) and decode-and-forward (DF) relaying protocols are considered. Subsequently, the closed-form expressions of outage probabilities and ergodic capacities are provided for each UAV relaying protocol. Extensive simulations are performed to verify the accuracy of the derived closed-form expressions. This paper investigates the outage and throughput performance of full-duplex (FD) cooperative relaying (CR) based non-orthogonal multiple access system (NOMA) with energy harvesting (EH) i.e., FD-CR-EH-NOMA system. We consider a network scenario, where the base station (BS) serves two downlink users, with the near user configured as a FD relay to deliver messages to the far user. We derive analytical expressions for the outage probabilities experienced by the users and the system outage probability of FD-CR-EH-NOMA network under time switching relaying (TSR) protocol in the presence/absence of direct link from BS to the far user. Assuming imperfect successive interference cancellation (i-SIC), we derive analytical expressions for (i) optimal power allocation (OPA) factor at the BS and (ii) optimal time switching (OTS) factor at the relay that independently minimizes the system outage probability. Further, we use the alternating optimization technique to determine the jointly optimal power allocation and time switching factors that minimize the system outage probability. Furthermore, we determine the OTS factor that maximizes the asymptotic throughput of the system in the delay-limited transmission mode. With the help of numerical and simulation investigations, we show that the system outage and throughput of the considered network improve significantly under the proposed schemes. Free-space optics (FSO) communication is often unreliable, especially for long distances, as it suffers from attenuation due to foggy weather, atmospheric turbulence, and pointing errors. To avoid communication link failure, radio frequency (RF) communication, which is unaffected from these effects, is utilized when FSO communication is in outage. Diversity is known to counteract the adverse fading effects, therefore, this paper presents a transmit aperture/antenna selection (TAS) and selection combining (SC)-based multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) hybrid FSO/RF system. The proposed system consists of a MIMO FSO and RF sub-systems. The MIMO FSO sub-system is given higher priority to transmit and receive using the selected best link. The best link of the MIMO RF sub-system is used when the FSO sub-system is in outage. The probability density function (PDF) and cumulative distribution function (CDF) expressions for TAS/SC-based MIMO FSO and RF sub-systems are derived. The derived PDF and CDF expressions are used further to derive the exact and asymptotic expressions for outage probability, average symbol error rate (SER), and capacity of the hybrid system. From the asymptotic SER expressions, the diversity order of the proposed system is determined. The optimum values for the threshold SNR and transmit beam waist, which minimize the average SER, are obtained. Further, the obtained optimal values using analytical expressions are verified using numerical optimization technique. The effect of multiple apertures/antennas, pointing errors, and atmospheric attenuation over the system performance is analyzed extensively by varying the FSO and RF channel parameters. The results show that the proposed hybrid FSO/RF system is more reliable compared to the individual MIMO FSO and RF systems and achieves higher capacity compared to the MIMO RF system. Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is considered as a potential multiple access technique for supporting massive number of devices with high spectral efficiency for the 5 G and beyond networks. Simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) is considered as an efficient solution for fully autonomous and sustainable communication networks. In this paper, application of SWIPT in heterogeneous networks (HetNets) employing cooperative NOMA (CNOMA) is investigated. The HetNets consists of macro-base stations (MBS) under-laid by small-base stations (SBS). The distribution of MBSs follow Poisson point process model, while the SBS tier supports NOMA and carrier sensing for its transmission. Carrier sensing helps in reducing interference by blocking the base stations within a specific range from transmitting. In this work, the analysis at SBS tier is carried out in two phases. In the direct phase transmission, the SBS transmits the superimposed signal to a user pair, comprising of a cell-centre user (CCU) and a cell-edge user (CEU), using NOMA principle. The CCU acts as a cooperative relay to forward information to the CEU in the cooperative phase. Unlike existing literature, instead of using only the superimposed signal for energy harvesting (EH), in this work, the cooperating user (i.e. CCU) employs EH using interference from the adjacent base stations along with the EH from the superimposed signal. Expressions for outage probability and throughput are derived at the user pair served using NOMA. Full duplex (FD) is one of the most attractive technologies in enhancing spectral efficiency for potentially doubling the system throughput. In this work, we employ FD jamming to improve the secrecy performance of an uplink non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) system at the presence of one eavesdropper. We first evaluate the individual secrecy performance in terms of effective secrecy throughput (EST), by deriving its closed-form expression. Valuable insights are provided into the impacts of transmit power, jamming power as well as the number of antennas. Asymptotic analyses concerning these three arguments show the secrecy performance is location-dependent only in the high regime of transmit power and approaches to the main capacity in the high regime of the other two arguments. A special case, beamforming FD jamming, is next studied such that $N$ -fold power gain on jamming is available, in turn, improving the secrecy performance. Limited gains from high transmit and jamming power prompt us to further investigate two optimal power allocation problems: (1) optimal power allocation to minimize total power, subject to an overall secrecy performance requirement; (2) optimal power allocation to maximize overall secrecy performance, with constraint of total power. The paper studies a wireless-powered full-duplex non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) system with one base station and two groups of near and far users, where the near users can be regarded as the self-energy recycling relays to assist the far users. In particular, the locations of the near and far users are modeled as the uniformly distributed and homogeneous Poisson Point Process respectively. From the beneficial perspective of the near users, we propose a novel power allocation scheme, which can utilize the partial channel state information to switch the transmission mode dynamically between cooperative NOMA and non-cooperative NOMA. Further, since the users’ locations have a significant influence on our proposed power allocation scheme, three different user selection strategies namely random near user and random far user (RNRF), optimal near user and nearest far user (ONNF), and optimal near user and farthest far user (ONFF) are investigated to carry out NOMA pairing. Firstly, the RNRF allows all of users to communicate with the base station by a fair opportunity compared to the others strategies, and then a two-stage user selection method is proposed by considering the actual states of near users to determine an optimal near user who can maximize the outage performance of far user for ONNF and ONFF strategies. In addition, outage probabilities, diversity orders, and system throughputs are derived to characterize the performance of three strategies. Finally, numerical results are shown to verify that not only our proposed power allocation scheme can improve the quality of service of near users but also user selection strategies can fully exploit multi-user diversity in comparison to the existing work. This article analyzes the robustness and timeliness for cooperative lossy communications in unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) networks. The analytical framework consists of two steps: 1) calculating the outage probability, and 2) characterizing the Age-of-Information (AoI) for a given outage probability. Initially, we determine the outage probability based on the Shannon's lossy source-channel separation theorem. Numerical results indicate that joint decoding reduces the outage probability, and the system can achieve higher diversity order for less stringent distortion requirement. Then, we derive a closed-form expression of the lower bound on the average AoI for the communication system where outage events are constrained to an acceptable level. Moreover, we conduct a series of simulations for verifying the lower bound on the average AoI and evaluating the impact of UAV locations on the average AoI. It is demonstrated that the lower bound is tight when the server utilization ratio is either relatively busy or idle. For the case with a relatively large outage probability, we propose an intermittent transmission scheme to refine the AoI performance without extra energy consumption. Terahertz (THz) frequency bands can be promising for data transmissions between the core network and access points (AP) for next-generation wireless systems. In this paper, we analyze the performance of a dual-hop THz-RF wireless system where an AP facilitates data transmission between a core network and user equipment (UE). We consider a generalized model for the end-to-end channel with independent and not identically distributed (i.ni.d.) fading model for THz and RF links using the $\alpha$ - $\mu$ distribution, the THz link with pointing errors, and asymmetrical relay position. We derive a closed-form expression of the cumulative distribution function (CDF) of the end-to-end signal to noise ratio (SNR) for the THz-RF link, which is valid for real-valued $\mu$ for a generalized performance analysis over THz fading channels. Using the derived CDF, we analyze the performance of the THz-RF relayed system using decode-and-forward (DF) protocol by deriving closed-form expressions of outage probability, moments of SNR, average BER, and a tight approximation of ergodic capacity in terms of system parameters. We develop asymptotic analysis on the ergodic capacity, outage probability, and average BER in the high SNR region and derive the diversity order of the system. We also analyze the considered system with an i.i.d. model and develop simplified performance to provide insight on the system behavior analytically under various practically relevant scenarios. Simulation and numerical analysis show a significant effect of fading parameters of the THz link and a nominal effect of normalized beam-width on the performance of the relay-assisted THz-RF system. With the advent of 5G and the need for energy-efficient massively connected wireless networks, in this work, we consider an energy harvesting (EH) based multi-relay downlink cooperative non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) system with practical constraints. The base station serves NOMA users with the help of decode-and-forward based multiple EH relays, where relays harvest the energy from the base station's radio frequency. A relay is selected from the multiple $K$ -relays by using a partial relay selection protocol. The system is considered to operate in half-duplex mode over a generalized independent and identical Nakagami $-m$ fading channel. In this paper, the performance of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based free-space optical relay system with amplify-and-forward relaying is analyzed. In particular, the statistical probability of end-to-end signal-to-noise ratio at the destination is obtained under a general condition that takes into account the effects of nonzero boresight pointing errors along with the effects of orientation and position fluctuations of the UAV relay, the UAV position with respect to the source and destination nodes, the optical beamwidth, turbulence strength of both source-to-relay and the relay-to-destination links. Subsequently, the closed-form expressions are derived for the bit-error rate and outage probability of the considered system. The accuracy of the analytical expressions is verified by performing extensive simulations. Analytical results are then utilized to study of the relationship between the optimal system parameters design and UAV's position in the sky. The results show that the optimal UAV's position that achieves a minimum outage probability highly depends on the optical beamwidth at the destination. Moreover, to achieve a minimum outage probability, the relay-to-destination link length must be shorter than source-to-destination (SR) link and by deceasing beamwidth at the destination, the optimal value for SR link length increases. This paper studies the application of network non-orthogonal multiple access (N-NOMA) to vehicular communication networks, modeled by a Poisson line Cox point process (PLC). Particularly, the road infrastructure is modeled by a Poisson line point process (PLP), whereas base stations (BSs) and users are located according to 1D homogeneous Poisson point processes (HPPPs) on each road. In the considered N-NOMA scheme, there are two types of users, i.e., coordinated multi-point (CoMP) users which are far from their BSs and NOMA users which are close to their BSs, where the CoMP users and the NOMA users are served simultaneously by applying the principle of NOMA. Specifically, the BSs collaborate with each other to provide reliable transmission for the CoMP user by applying Almouti coding, while each BS employs superposition coding to opportunistically serve an additional NOMA user. Compared to a conventional OMA based scheme, where only a CoMP user is served, the proposed N-NOMA scheme significantly improves the performance in terms of outage sum rates and user connectivity, since more users are served in the same resource block. A comprehensive analytical framework is developed to characterize the system level performance of the proposed N-NOMA scheme by applying PLC. Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is considered as a promising technology, which can effectively control the phase of signals with low-cost reflective elements. In this paper, we investigate the RIS-assisted D2D communication system under Nakagami- $m$ fading. Overlay mode and underlay mode are discussed respectively. To characterize the performance of proposed communication system, we propose novel closed-form analytical expressions for outage probability under two modes, respectively. Based on the analytical results, we derive the diversity order of outage probability. We show that under overlay D2D mode, the diversity order depends on the number of elements and fading parameters. For the underlay D2D case, 0 diversity order is obtained due to the existence of interference. Furthermore, we study the ergodic achievable rate for each mode and the corresponding tight bounds are derived in closed form. High SNR slopes achieved by users under two modes are also discussed. We observe a high SNR slope of order 1 for overlay D2D mode and 0 for underlay D2D mode. In addition, we also investigate the energy efficiency (EE) of the considered system. Numerical results show that the optimal phase shift proposed in our paper enhance system performance effectively comparing to the traditional D2D communication and random phase shift scheme. Significant EE gains can be obtained for low to middle SNR region by passive reflectors with reconfigurable phase. Reducing the energy consumption of vehicles is one of the greatest challenges we are facing in the mobility sector. A major step in this direction has been taken with the introduction of hybrid electric vehicles. Their performance, however, depends strongly on the energy management strategy used, which exploits the additional degree of freedom of the propulsion system and is inevitably limited by the lack of knowledge about the exact future driving conditions. Various attempts are being made to offer predictions, one of which is to exploit recorded travel data. In this paper, we propose an incremental graph construction algorithm that encapsulates this data in a digital representation of the road network and captures the actual travel routes of the vehicle along with the sequences of the specified measurement signals. The algorithm processes each location estimate separately, together with any desired simultaneously recorded measurement signal such as the vehicle speed, and constructs a directed graph in whose vertices the measurement data is stored. The real-time capability of this algorithm allows an up-to-date representation of both the road network and the signals it contains at all times. Whenever the vehicle is driving on an already visited route, we can obtain distance-resolved predictions by traversing the graph in the direction of travel and querying the stored measurement data. We present two techniques to efficiently store and predict this data, i.e., by using frequentist prediction intervals and Gaussian process regression. Our algorithm runs in real time and without any manual initialization, pre-, or post-processing. Verifications both during real operation on a trolley bus in public transportation and by simulation on a publicly available dataset demonstrate that the algorithm is real-time capable, that it consistently captures and predicts the recorded signals, and that it works in practice. Ultraviolet (UV) communication has emerged as a promising solution for providing non-line-of-sight (NLOS) wireless connectivity due to strong molecular and aerosol scattering at UV wavelength. However, performance of UV based communication systems is severely impaired due to nonlinear transfer-characteristics of light emitting diode (LED), which degrades the overall symbol error rate (SER) performance. In addition, UV based communication systems are also impaired by multiplicative distortion due to turbulence, that causes detrimental instantaneous outages. Hence, in this work, first an expression for the outage probability is derived for a nonlinear UV communication system via analytical characterization of the statistics of the additive distortion. Further, utilizing the proposed analytical model for additive distortion, the error rate of reproducing kernel Hilbert space (RKHS) based detectors is quantified for the nonlinear outdoor NLOS UV channel. Additionally, using the derived expression for error-rate, an RKHS based minimum symbol error rate (MSER) equalizer is formulated to mitigate the distortion due to LED nonlinearity, and to enhance the error-rate performance of the considered nonlinear NLOS UV link. Convergence of the proposed MSER equalizer is analyzed, and improvements in error-rate promised by the proposed equalizer are validated by computer simulations over typical NLOS UV channels. Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) assisted wireless caching networks (WCN) have been recognized as a promising way to reduce the network load and improve the energy efficiency in the sixth generation (6 G) communication systems. Aiming to improve spectrum efficiency and system capacity, we apply non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) in UAV-assisted WCN to serve multiple users on the same spectrum simultaneously and propose the cross-layer resource allocation strategy including the scheduling of UAVs, the grouping of users, and the allocation of power. First, the ρ-K-means algorithm is proposed to assign users to multiple clusters and deploy UAVs according to the distance from UAVs to the base station in the UAV deployment layer. Then, the base station broadcasts the popular files to UAVs via NOMA in the content placement layer. Based on the existing fixed power allocation strategy, we propose a statistic quality of service (QoS) based fixed (SQF) power allocation method to take the statistic QoS of the popular files into consideration and improve the energy efficiency through introducing the discount factor. On the basis of SQF, an instantaneous QoS based adaptive (IQA) strategy allocates power according to the instantaneous QoS of the popular files to reduce the file outage probability. Furthermore, we propose an improved method that is a cross-layer based optimal (CLO) power allocation strategy to maximize the system hit probability. Finally, in the content delivery layer, users in each cluster are grouped according to the channel gain from users to UAVs. In addition, each UAV serves two users on the same time-frequency resource block based on the cognitive radio inspired power allocation for the NOMA user pairs. The emerging non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) technique for fifth-generation (5G) heterogeneous network (HetNet) yields performance improvement specifically by boosting the network capacity and spectral efficiency. This paper proposes a new NOMA scheme for the uplink HetNet using oblique projection (OP) under perfect and imperfect channel state information at the receiver (CSIR). In this scheme, the OP operation performed at the femtocell base station (FBS) recovers the desired NOMA users’ signal from the composite received signal. Unlike the existing successive interference cancellation (SIC) based NOMA schemes, the proposed scheme does not demand any power control or user clustering techniques for decoding NOMA users’ data at the receiver side. Further, it does not need information exchange between users for decoding and hence the computational complexity and the signaling overhead of the system gets reduced significantly. To evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme under perfect CSIR analytically, we derive the closed-form expression for the probability of error and outage probability at the FBS receiver. We also derive the diversity order, sum-rate, and perform the computational complexity analysis of the NOMA-HetNet system employing the proposed scheme. Simulation results illustrate that the derived analytical results accurately describe the proposed NOMA scheme. We compare the performance of the proposed technique with a prevailing SIC based NOMA scheme and establish its superiority. This paper presents the secrecy outage probability of relay and user (RU) selection in the antenna selection (AS)-amplify and forward (AF) system over integer-valued m Nakagami fading channels for the physical layer security. This work derives the lower bound (LB) and asymptotic cumulative density functions (CDFs) of the signal to noise ratio (SNR) for the RU selection in the AS-AF system. This study also considers the impact of the two types of receivers, i.e., maximal ratio combining (MRC), selection combining (SC) for the authorized system and eavesdropper. Using the lower bound CDFs, the LB expressions of the secrecy outage probability are derived for various scenarios. Applying the asymptotic CDFs, the diversity order of the secrecy performance is also quantified for each case. From analysis results, we show that the diversity order of the secrecy outage probability in the proposed system is only affected by authorized system's parameters, not by eavesdropper's parameters. Further, the relay and user nodes with the MRC receiver provide the SNR gain compared to the SC receiver regardless of eavesdropper's receiver type. Finally, the secrecy outage probability of the proposed RU system with the SC eavesdropper has the SNR gain compared to the MRC eavesdropper, while the diversity order is identical to each other. This paper proposes a new artificial noise (AN) scheme that combines with the relay selection techniques to improve the physical layer security for a wiretap full-duplex decode-and-forward cooperative network. The communication consists of two phases. In the first phase, the source transmits a message to the selected full-duplex relay, which simultaneously injects AN to mitigate eavesdropping attacks. In the second phase, the selected relay decodes the source message, XORs the source message and AN, and then broadcasts the mixed-signal to the destination. Different form existing schemes, the proposed AN scheme makes the eavesdropper fail in obtaining any information about the source message directly in the second phase. We take into account the correlation of the channel coefficients for the same link during different phases in the performance analysis of AN-aided max-min (MM) and partial (Par) relay selection schemes, and characterize the security-reliability trade-off (SRT) of the proposed schemes by the closed-form expressions of outage probability and intercept probability. Numerical results show that the proposed AN-aided MM/Par relay selection achieves a better SRT performance than the corresponding full-duplex mode assisted AN-aided relay selection scheme in existing literature. Furthermore, the MM scheme outperforms the Par scheme in terms of the SRT, and the SRT of the MM scheme can be substantially improved by increasing the number of relays, while the improvement of the Par scheme is limited. It is very challenging to detect an unmanned-aerial-vehicle (UAV) when it is applied to launch an attack by the enemy’s country, due to its feature of mobility and flexibility. Against this background, in this paper, from wireless communication point of view, we study the detection probability of home country’s ground vehicle (GV) to enemy’s ground-station (GS)-to-UAV transmission system. We assume that the location of the GV is randomly distributed inside the space confined by the largest detection distance. Moreover, we assume the enemy’s UAV is randomly distributed in the coverage space of the GS-to-UAV (G2A) transmission link but also keep the security distance from the GS. To this end, we first characterize the statistical features of the signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) over the G2V and G2A links. Then, we define detection outage probability (DOP) and average detection capacity (ADC), and show their approximations. In the millimeter waves (mmWave) bands considered for 5G and beyond, the use of very high frequencies results in the interruption of communication whenever there is no line of sight between the transmitter and the receiver. Blockages have been modeled in the literature so far using tools such as stochastic geometry and random shape theory. Using these tools, in this paper, we characterize the lengths of the segments in line-of-sight (LOS) and in non-line-of-sight (NLOS) statistically in an urban scenario where buildings (with random positions, lengths, and heights) are deployed in parallel directions configuring streets. This paper presents a mathematical framework to evaluate distance statistics of first arriving multi-path components at millimeter wave (mm-Wave) frequencies in a typical indoor environment. The proposed modeling approach is based on a numerically tractable channel model that accounts for the line-of-sight (LoS) component and first-order reflection components from surrounding walls. Based on the derived statistics, an approximation for coverage probability of mm-Wave indoor wireless local area networks (WLAN)s is obtained. Further, the coverage probability for an access point (AP) to user node link is determined after accounting for blockage of LoS component and optimal antenna beamforming in the modeling framework. In this paper, we develop a novel active video content caching scheme (RCC) based on a recommendation system, and consistent hash for device-to-device(D2D) communication. The RCC scheme is constructed by a cache placement scheme, a consistent hash algorithm, an optimal video segmentation scheme, and an optimal video library segmentation scheme. To begin with, a well-designed cache placement scheme based on a mobile model with helper notes, and video segmentation is proposed to reduce the redundancy of the videos, and save users’ cache. In order to solve the interruption problem caused by segmentation, a consistent hash algorithm is introduced to improve the success probability of D2D communication. According to the recommendation system, all users’ predictive score for all videos can be calculated, which results that users’ most interesting video files rather than popular video files as previous work can be obtained, and cached in advance to improve the hitting probability. Furthermore, an optimal video segmentation scheme, and an optimal video library segmentation scheme are developed to minimize the transmission delay, and maximize the hitting probability respectively. Simulation results show that compared with other traditional caching schemes, the proposed RCC scheme can reach about 70% reduction in outage probability, 40% reduction in system latency, and 10% improvement in hitting probability, all of which can achieve the best performance. In this letter, a new power allocation scheme is proposed to improve the reliability of cooperative non-orthogonal multiple access (CO-NOMA). The strong user is allocated the maximum power, whereas the weak user is allocated the minimum power. This power allocation alters the decoding sequence along with the signal-to-interference plus noise ratio (SINR), at the users. The weak user benefits from receiving multiple copies of the signal whereas the strong user benefits from the higher power allocation. Numerical simulation results show that the proposed scheme has a lower mutual outage probability (MOP) and offers better reliability as compared to the conventional power allocation scheme for CO-NOMA. An exact closed-form expression of MOP is derived for the two-user CO-NOMA system and it is shown that each user achieves full diversity. The proposed allocation is able to achieve approximately 30% higher transmission rate at 15 dB as compared to conventional CO-NOMA in a practical non-power balanced scenario. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The scheduling strategy is a vital precondition for achieving remarkable performance benefits offered by non-orthogonal multiple-access (NOMA) schemes. In this article, the cumulative distribution function (CDF)-based scheduling for NOMA (CS-NOMA) networks with randomly deployed users is investigated. We consider two practical successive interference cancellation (SIC) restrictions, namely imperfect SIC and SIC power difference constraint, in both downlink and uplink transmissions. Exact analytical expressions for the outage probabilities of the two scheduled users are derived in both fixed power allocation (FPA) and cognitive-radio-inspired power allocation (CPA) scenarios. To get more insights, high signal to noise ratio (SNR) approximations or bounds of the outage probabilities are derived, and then be utilized to analyze the achieved diversity orders. Assuming the number of near and far users are respectively represented as $K$ and $B$. Results reveal that, in downlink transmission, the far user can achieve a diversity order of $B$ in both FPA and CPA policies, while the near user's diversity order will be reduced from $K$ (in FPA) to $\text{min}\lbrace K,B\rbrace$ (in CPA). However, in uplink transmission, the achieved diversity orders of the near and far users will be increased from zeros to $K$ and $\text{min}\lbrace K,B\rbrace$ , respectively. In this paper, we investigate the system outage probability of a simultaneous wireless information, and power transfer (SWIPT) based two-way amplify-and-forward (AF) relay network, where transceiver hardware impairments (HIs) are considered. The energy-constrained relay node processes the received signals based on a power splitting protocol, and the two terminals employ a selection combining (SC) scheme to exploit the signals from the direct and relaying links. Assuming independent but non-identically distributed Nakagami-m fading channels, we derive the system outage probability in a closed-form, which enables us to identify two crucial ceiling effects on the system outage probability caused by HIs in the high data rate regions, i.e., relay cooperation ceiling (RCC) and overall system ceiling (OSC). Specifically, the RCC prevents the relaying link from participating in cooperative communications, while the OSC leaves the overall system in outage. Furthermore, we derive the achievable diversity gain of the considered network, which shows that the diversity gain equals either the shape parameter of the direct link or zero. Computer simulations are provided to validate the correctness of our analytical results, and study the effects of various system parameters on the system outage performance and the optimal power splitting ratio, as well as the energy efficiency. This paper proposes a new sum-rate maximization based relay selection (RS) scheme for cooperative non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) networks over Nakagami-m fading, where one base station communicates with two mobile users by means of multiple relays. The outage probability of the proposed scheme is derived in a closed-form expression, and the diversity order is also obtained.
