In this paper, we investigate a two-hop simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) amplify-and-forward (AF) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) relay communication system with an energy-limited relay node. The relay node harvests energy based on the radio-frequency (RF) signal transmitted from the source node through the time-switching (TS) protocol and fully uses the harvested energy to precode and forward the information to the destination node. The non-linear energy harvesting models are considered at the relay node. With the consideration of the channel estimation error, the joint optimization of the TS factor, source and relay precoding matrices is proposed with robustness against the channel state information (CSI) mismatch to maximize the mutual information (MI) between the source and destination nodes. The optimal structure for the source and relay precoding matrices is derived to simplify the transceiver optimization problem. Multiple remote antenna units (RAUs) cooperate to serve a certain user in cell-free distributed massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. Due to the different distances between each RAU and the user, asynchronous reception effects will occur. This paper studies the impacts of asynchronous reception effects on cell-free distributed massive MIMO systems. We first derive the minimum-mean-square error (MMSE) channel estimation under the asynchronous reception effects. Given the estimated channel state information, we derive the closed-form expressions of the user achievable rates with maximum ratio transmission (MRT) and regularized zero-forcing (RZF) precoders, which are further used to analyze the impacts of asynchronous reception effects. The accuracy of the closed-form expressions are verified. Simulation results demonstrate that asynchronous reception effects cause a non-negligible drop on the system spectral efficiency. Moreover, the performance degradation is proportional to the subcarrier sequence number and even more serious with the increasing of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) or the number of antennas per RAU. Channel estimation is crucial to beamforming techniques in directional millimetre wave (mmWave) communications, which is generally designed based on channel state information static. However, due to the Doppler effect caused by the mobility of users, such as unmanned aerial vehicles, high-speed trains and autonomous vehicles, the mmWave channel is changing rapidly. Spatial channel covariance, defined by long-term statistic information of channels, is a promising solution to reduce channel estimation frequency and can be used to design hybrid precoders. In this paper, we first proposed a highly mobile hybrid mmWave multi-user (MU) multiple input multiple output (MIMO) system based on transition probabilities which can represent moving action of the MU. Secondly, we investigate compressive sensing based spatial channel covariance estimation based on the proposed dynamic system. We then propose a dynamic covariance forward-backward pursuit (DCFBP) algorithm which introduces forward and backward mechanisms to reconstruct the Hermitian sparse covariance matrix. We further explore the constructed MU sensing matrix quality for conventional sparse Bayesian learning (SBL) framework. The updated sparse Bayesian learning (Updated-SBL) algorithm is developed to reduce the total squared coherence of a constructed sensing matrix with updated receive precoder. Numerical analysis demonstrates the proposed DCFBP method outperforms the benchmark methods. The total squared coherence of the proposed Updated-SBL algorithm is dramatically reduced. and the superiority of this algorithm is validated compared with other benchmark methods with comparable computation complexity. This paper is concerned with the sum-rate maximization problem in multiple-input multiple-output interference channels. We design the transmit covariance matrix, associated with each transmitter to maximize the sum-rate of the network when the number of data symbols is unknown. The design problem is nonconvex and then hard to be solved. We devise a semidistributed design methodology according to majorization–minimization technique to deal with the optimization problem. This leads us to a convex quadratically constrained quadratic program at each iteration with a semiclosed form solution. The proposed method is computationally efficient and converges to stationary points of the problem. The fact that the method is based on a distributed processing framework along with relatively low computational burden ( $\mathcal{O}(\max \lbrace M,N\rbrace ^{2.3})$ per iteration with $M$ and $N$ being the number of antennas at the transmitter and receiver, respectively) for the user terminals can make it a potential candidate for practical implementations. Finally, we extend the proposed method for the case with channel estimation errors. Simulation results verify the efficiency of the proposed method, and in a typical scenario we have around 60 times lower run-time when compared to the counterparts of the method. Two-stage beamforming is a transmit strategy that uses two types of beamformers to reduce the feedback overhead of frequency-division-duplexing massive multiple-input multiple-output systems that are spatially correlated. In this paper, we present large system analysis of two-stage beamforming when a transmitter has limited channel information from feedback and when regularized-zero-forcing (RZF) is used as a second-stage beamformer. We consider two random-vector-quantization-based feedback schemes that can be respectively applied when users have perfect channel information or perfect effective channel information. For each feedback method, we analyze both expected signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) and expected rate loss and then characterize their bounds as a function of the number of feedback bits. From the characterization, we reveal that the sum rate of two-stage beamforming is very sensitive to the regularization parameter of RZF, especially when the number of feedback bits is limited. Motivated by this, we derive the optimal regularization parameter that maximizes the SINR of two-stage beamforming with limited feedback. Using simulations, we verify the tightness of the characterized bounds and quantify how the use of the optimal regularization parameter improves the sum rate of two-stage beamforming. This paper investigates an outage-constrained secrecy rate maximization (OC-SRM) problem based on the statistical channel uncertainty assumption in an underlay multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) cognitive radio network, where the secondary transmitter provides simultaneous wireless information and power transfer to receivers. Our objective is to design the transmit covariance matrix and artificial noise aided covariance matrix through maximizing the secrecy rate of the secondary user while satisfying the given outage probability requirements. The designed problem is nonconvex and challenging. We employ the existing theory to reformulate the original problem into two equivalent subproblems by introducing auxiliary variables in order to overcome the difficulty arising from the Shannon capacity expression. The Bernstein-type inequality approach is resorted to conservatively approximate the probabilistic constraints. The merit of the transformation and conversion is that the tractable solutions of the original OC-SRM problem can be easily obtained through solving two convex conic subproblems alternately. In this paper, the feasibility of a new downlink transmission mode in massive multi-input multi-output (MIMO) systems is investigated with two types of users, i.e., the users with only statistical channel state information (CSI) and the users with imperfect instantaneous CSI. The problem of downlink precoding design with mixed utilization of statistical and imperfect instantaneous CSI is addressed. We first theoretically analyze the impact of the mutual interference between the two types of users on their achievable rate. Then, considering the mutual interference suppression, we propose an extended zero forcing and an extended maximum ratio transmission precoding methods to minimize the total transmit power of base station and to maximize the received signal power of users, respectively. Thanks to the exploitation of statistical CSI, pilot-based channel estimation is avoided enabling more active users, higher system sum rate, and shorter transmission delay. Massive multiple input multiple output (MIMO) is expected to be one of the enabling technologies for fifth-generation cellular networks. One of the major challenges in massive MIMO systems is the accurate joint estimation of the channel and noise variance, which significantly affects the performance of wireless communications in practical scenarios. In this paper, we first derive a novel maximum likelihood estimator for the noise variance at the receiver of massive MIMO systems considering practical impairments such as pilot contamination. Then, this estimate is used to compute the minimum mean square error estimate of the channel. In order to measure the performance of the proposed noise variance estimator, we derive the corresponding Cramér–Rao lower bound (CRLB). Simulation results show that the estimator is efficient in certain scenarios, outperforming existing approaches in the literature. Furthermore, we develop the estimator and the CRLB for equal and different noise variance at the receive antennas. In this paper, we consider the downlink of multicell multiuser massive multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) systems employing the eigenvalue-decomposition-based channel estimation. The impacts of two errors are emphasized, namely, the error due to nonorthogonal channel vectors caused by a finite number of base station (BS) antennas and the error of the sample covariance matrix because of the received signal with a finite length. First, we derive the closed-form expressions for the achievable rate and the symbol error rate (SER). It is shown that no matter how large the number of BS antennas is, the rate loss due to finite BS antennas always exists. As the number of BS antennas increases, the rate loss converges to a constant, which only relates to the large-scale factors and transmit power. On the other hand, the rate loss caused by the sample covariance matrix could be zero when the number of received signal goes to infinity. We further investigate the asymptotic behaviors of the SER in the regimes of high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), large number of received signals, and large number of BS antennas. It is demonstrated that the SER at high SNRs is interference limited instead of noise limited; the boundary of the SER in the limit of an infinite number of received signal is also derived. Although increasing the number of BS antennas can improve system performance, there is always a gap between the SER and that obtained without these two errors. In a massive multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) uplink system, the pilot sequence reuse in neighboring cells causes pilot contamination, causing the decoding performance to degrade significantly. In this paper, a blind decoding method based on independent component analysis (ICA) is proposed without using pilot sequences. The proposed blind decoding method uses ICA to separate the received signals (from in-cell and neighboring cells) and estimate channels. The energy levels of the estimated channels are used to differentiate an in-cell signal from neighboring cell signals. The analytical performance results of the blind decoding method are derived. Numerical results show that the proposed blind decoding scheme outperforms minimum-mean-square-error (MMSE) decoding and zero-forcing (ZF) decoding with imperfect channel state information (CSI). Operation of full-duplex systems requires efficient mitigation of the self-interference signal caused by the simultaneous transmission/reception. In this paper, we propose a maximum-likelihood (ML) approach to jointly estimate the self-interference and intended channels by exploiting its own known transmitted symbols and both the known pilot and unknown data symbols from the other intended transceiver. The ML solution is obtained by maximizing the ML function under the assumption of Gaussian received symbols. A closed-form solution is first derived, and subsequently, an iterative procedure is developed to further improve the estimation performance at moderate-to-high signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs). We establish the initial condition to guarantee the convergence of the iterative algorithm to the ML solution. In the presence of considerable phase noise from the oscillators, a phase noise estimation method is proposed and combined with the ML channel estimator to mitigate the effects of the phase noise. Several distributed coordinated precoding methods exist in the downlink multicell multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) literature, many of which assume perfect knowledge of received signal covariance and local effective channels. In this paper, we let the notion of channel state information (CSI) encompass this knowledge of covariances and effective channels. We analyze what local CSI is required in the weighted minimization of the mean square error (WMMSE) algorithm for distributed coordinated precoding, and we study how this required CSI can be obtained in a distributed fashion. Based on pilot-assisted channel estimation, we propose three CSI acquisition methods with different tradeoffs between feedback and signaling, backhaul use, and computational complexity. One of the proposed methods is fully distributed, meaning that it only depends on over-the-air signaling but requires no backhaul, and it results in a fully distributed joint system when coupled with the WMMSE algorithm. Naïvely applying the WMMSE algorithm together with the fully distributed CSI acquisition results in catastrophic performance however; therefore, we propose a robustified WMMSE algorithm (RB-WMMSE) based on the well-known diagonal loading framework. By enforcing properties of the WMMSE solutions with perfect CSI onto the problem with imperfect CSI, the resulting diagonally loaded spatial filters are shown to perform significantly better than the naïve filters. The proposed robust and distributed system is evaluated using numerical simulations and is shown to perform well compared with benchmarks. Under centralized CSI acquisition, the proposed algorithm performs on par with other existing centralized robust WMMSE algorithms. This paper proposes a novel precoding scheme for multiuser multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) relay systems in the presence of imperfect channel state information (CSI). The base station (BS) and the MIMO relay station (RS) are both equipped with the same codebook of unitary matrices. According to each element of the codebook, we create a latent precoding matrix pair, namely, a BS precoding matrix and an RS precoding matrix. The RS precoding matrix is formed by multiplying the appropriate unitary matrix from the codebook by a power scaling factor. Based on the given CSI and a block of transmit symbols, the optimum precoding matrix pair, within the class of all possible latent precoding matrix pairs derived from the various unitary matrices, is selected by a suitable selection mechanism for transmission, which is designed to minimize the squared Euclidean distance between the pre-estimated received vector and the true transmit symbol vector. We develop a minimum mean-square-error (MMSE) design algorithm to construct the latent precoding matrix pairs. In the proposed scheme, rather than sending the complete processing matrix, only the index of the unitary matrix and its power scaling factor are sent by the BS to the RS. This significantly reduces the overhead. Simulation results show that, compared with other recently reported precoding algorithms, the proposed precoding scheme is capable of providing improved robustness against the effects of CSI estimation errors and multiuser interference.
